The catalogue of the inaugural exhibition, organized by Alison Gingeras and Francesco Bonami, which will involve both the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi. The works are presented in a way that is in harmony with the characteristics and atmosphere of each venue: a more intimate, private view on the one hand, and a more outward-looking world view on the other. Together, the two parts of the exhibition create a dialogue between artists of different generations, offering highly diverse forms of expression and sensitivity. Classic names like Penone, Cattelan and Hirst are exhibited side by side with young talent such as Urs Fischer, Piotr Uklanski and Rudolf Stingel, who are introduced in articles by Bonami and Gingeras. Bonami English text French text Size 24×28,5 Pages 312 Illustrations 300 color Hardcover Release date 2008 Price € 50,00 This exhibition, copresented by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Palazzo Grassi, Venice, explores Italian art and creativity from the late 1960s to the present 2009. Including work by more than 75 Italian artists, Italics is not just an exhibition about art made in Italy but, more importantly, demonstrates how these artists have forged new identities from deep roots blossoming in many different directions. LA STORIA Edited by Giandomenico Romanelli English/French/Italian text Size 24×28,5 Pages 280 Illustrations 150 color Hardcover with jacket Release date 2009 Price € 55,00 Giandomenico Romanelli, a member of the new scientific committee of Punta della Dogana, has curated this book which traces the functional history (as a trading center) and the iconographic role (in paintings from the 18th century to the present day) of the building which housed the Dogana da Màr (the customs house for goods arriving by sea) of the Most Serene Republic of Venice. Romanelli, Paola Rossi and J.-C. Hoquet tell the story of the building right up to the moment when Tadao Ando stepped in. His aim was to make Punta della Dogana the third contemporary art venue in Venice, after the Peggy Guggenheim and Palazzo Grassi. Designed in the 17th century by Giuseppe Benoni, the building consists of eight bays with a tower at the tip. On the top of the tower is a large gilt bronze sphere representing the globe, shouldered by two kneeling Atlas figures, with a statue of Fortune on the very top. This wedge-shaped building between the Grand Canal and the Canale della Giudecca, overlooking the Bacino San Marco, commands one of the finest views in Venice. 7 art Catalogo_2010_FKT_Arte 16-09-2009 18:21 Pagina 8 Milan, Triennale PAPER JEWELLERY GIOIELLI DI CARTA Edited by F. At the end of the exhibition, it will set off on an international tour and return to Italy in 2010 to the Fabriano Paper Museum. PIZZA GRAFICA VV.AA. Italian/English text Size 20×25 Pages 384 Illustrations 350 Bodoni Release date 2009 Price € 45,00 In the ‘image society’, communication is the real interface tool between customers, market and society. “In the image society, the image is important”, “communicating is connecting”, “contemporary graphics are design” and “design isn’t a style, it’s an approach”: these are some of the tenets of the Manifesto drawn up by Ministero della Grafica (‘Ministry of Graphics’), a cultural promotion association operating in the sphere of visual communication. It is firmly convinced that the way things appear influences the relationship between people, objects and actions. Pizza Grafica (Graphic Pizza) brings together all the designs selected by the ‘Ministry’ from the entries for an open competition involving hundreds of studios and designers: young and old, large and small, famous and not so well-known. The result is an instantaneous visual and geographical summary of graphics culture in Italy. 8 16-09-2009 18:21 Pagina 9 art Catalogo_2010_FKT_Arte BERLIN FIGURE DODO ARSLAN Edited by G. The exhibitions are recorded through photos and designs of the exhibition premises, together with the concept and catalog of the (very precious) exhibits in each case. DAMIANI Edited by M. Mattirolo, M.V. Marini Clarelli Italian text Size 17×24 Pages 896 (2 volumes) Illustrations 1350 color Paperback with long flaps Release date 2009 Price € 70,00 The catalogue brings together the entire contemporary art collection, of works both on display and in store, acquired by the National Gallery of Modern Art (GNAM) and the National Gallery of 21st-century art (MAXXI). The time-span examined in the catalogue ranges from 1958 to 2008, the last 50 years being the period defined by the law protecting contemporary art. The catalogue, published in two volumes, has been conceived as an alphabetical list of artists’ names with an analytical index for the purposes of research. A final section is devoted to works which, due to their specific characteristics (for example, books by artists), or because of their origin or the way in which they were acquired (for example ships’ furnishings), demanded treatment which reflected these differences. The aim of the catalogue is to present the works so that they can be easily consulted, in a format of scientific charts and individual color reproductions of each work, covering the more than 1,350 works of contemporary art in Italy’s national collections. ATLANTE ITALIANO 007 RISCHIO PAESAGGIO Ritratto dell’Italia che cambia Edited by F.Fabiani English text Size 24×28 Pages 148 Illustrations 130 color Paperback with long flaps Release date 2008 Price € 16,00 The Italian Atlas project conceived by DARC periodically brings together several of the world’s best-known photographers; in this volume they are asked to capture the processes transforming the face of Italy. Worlds away from the stereotypes and clichés of that picture-perfect Italy found mostly on postcards, the photographs in Atlas 2007 reveal a country in rapid evolution: a contradictory vision, but one that is always emotionally charged, with images of the highest quality. Photographers for this edition include Massimo Berrutti, Andrea Botto, John Davies, David Farrel, Alex S. Maclean, Walter Niedermayr, Fabio Ponzio, Marialba Russo, Paul Seawright, Geroge Tadge, Fulvio Ventura, and Massimo Vitali. 13 art Catalogo_2010_FKT_Arte 16-09-2009 18:21 Pagina 14 Rome, Macro CESARE ZAVATTINI G. Mastinu, F. Pola Italian/English text Size 17×24 Pages 160 Illustrations 220 color Hardcover Release date 2009/2010 Price € 35,00 The nucleus of 200 unpublished works, all exhibited for the first time in Rome, consists of small paintings on paper executed in the 1940s, found decades later at the ‘Archivio del Cavallino’. The catalogue of the exhibition looks at Zavattini’s relationship with collector and gallery-owner Cardazzo, whose Venetian salon was a sort of intellectual meeting-place for Italian avant-garde artists and writers of that time, including Zavattini. In 1943, year of the first Cavallino Prize, the artist was one of the promoters of the ‘Gioco del Paradiso’ (Paradise Game) exhibition, which included drawings and paintings by Italian writers, including Dino Buzzati, Antonio Delfini, Eugenio Montale and Leonardo Sinisgalli. Zavattini won first prize, thus establishing a lasting contract with Cardazzo. The catalogue reveals the acrossthe-board skill of Zavattini who, in terms of vocation and character, was equally gifted in the media of literature, journalism, painting and, especially, narrative. This unusual side of “Zavattini in color” is certainly less well-known than the ‘black and white’ version we know from his films, but just as rich in imagination, still able to tell stories, describe figures and surprise us, even today. Fascinating, enterprising and worldly, she succeeded in managing the only gallery in Italy devoted to the art of the 19th and 20th centuries with a firm grip and far-sighted determination. She was appointed superintendent during the dark period of WWII, in 1942, and succeeded in saving the collection from the air raids. Just two years later, she re-opened the gallery, had the building restored and set about recalling works of art, including foreign artworks that had been removed during the Fascist Era. In the ‘50’s Bucarelli began to make a series of acquisitions: works of the Futurist movement, by Modigliani, Moranti and Savinio, and Abstract Art from Italy and abroad. Thanks to important exhibitions of work by great artists such as Picasso, Mondrian, Pollock, Malevic and Rothko, the gallery was thrown into the spotlight of the international artistic debate. On the one hand, both historical periods have a background of revolutionary scientific discoveries which have transformed our way of living and thinking and, on the other, have experienced deep-rooted religious fanaticism. By examining the work of contemporary artists who are sensitive to this kind of subject, this is an attempt to analyze the spirit of the time. A scientific committee, comprising historians, critics and experts of international renown, will give a horizontal slant to the exhibition and, at the same time, ensure expert curatorship. Twelve years on from his last exhibition at the Pecci Museum in Prato, Tuscany, the work of Antoni Tàpies returns to Italy with an important personal exhibition at the MARCA in Catanzaro. One of the key figures of the post-war period, Tàpies had a strong influence on artists like Joseph Beuys and Jannis Kounellis. Through a rigorous selection of paintings, sculptures and installations, in which each component takes on a concrete and visionary presence, the exhibition aims to re-discover the persisting influence of the mark made by this Spanish artist, who has never abandoned his experimental search. The museum will also house Muri (Walls), a synthesis of his art, of the nomadic journey which, using language that is permanently precarious and unstable, leads to the Graffitism of the ‘80s. On July 31, Intersections 4, a great exhibition devoted to the work of Dennis Oppenheim, one of the most important artists of the contemporary scene, opens in the magical setting of the Archaeological Park of Scolacium. After the exhibitions held in the three previous years dedicated, in chronological order, to Tony Cragg, Jan Fabre and Mimmo Paladino, Antony Gormley and finally Mark Queen, Stephan Balkenhol and Wim Delvoye, Intersections 4 focuses on the brilliant American artist and includes some of his most important sculptures, for example: Electric Kisses, Splash Building and Safety Cones. There will also be many new environmental installations, both from his studio in New York and lent by other private European foundations. 20 16-09-2009 18:22 Pagina 21 art Catalogo_2010_FKT_Arte ALEX KATZ Edited by A.Fiz Italian text Size 24×28 Pages 240 Illustrations 180 color Hardcover Release date 2009 Price € 42,00 INTERSEZIONI 2 ANTONY GORMLEY Edited by A.Fix Italian/English text Size 22×28 Pages 240 Illustrations 180 color Hardcover Release date 2006 Price € 45,00 MIMMO ROTELLA Edited by A. Speed, dynamism, action, modernity, together with a disdain for tradition and conventionality were the values behind the shout of the Futurist movement, which called for the renewal of Italian society. The weapon they used for their fight was a special kind of manifesto, to which the exhibition and the catalogue Futurismo Manifesto 100x100, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, are dedicated. The authors of the interesting contributions to the catalogue come from different walks of life. He can work in places and areas which have profound personal meaning and, using his unique language, create “unique acts” with great impact and strength of communication which verge on dramatic art. In this work we can see the return of coats, vestiges of human presence. Scattered all over a floor under which they once buried the dead. A huge iron cross is poised inside the building, set at an angle that imitates and is reminiscent of depictions of Christ carrying the Cross. As always happens with Kounellis’ works, the artist has created a strong rapport with the setting. 24 IL LINGUAGGIO DELL’EQUILIBRIO STANZE PER VILLA PANZA Edited by J.Kosuth, F.Biggiero Italian/English text Size 27×32 Pages 108 Illustrations 100 Hardcover Release date 2009 Edited by G.Piccoli Italian text Size 24×28 Pages 112 Illustrations 60 Hardcover with jacket Release date 2009 Price € 40,00 Price € 35,00 16-09-2009 18:22 Pagina 25 art Catalogo_2010_FKT_Arte VB65 PAC MILANO VV.AA. Her latest performance, presented at the PAC in Milan, has reached number 65, and once again these strong images, these memorable tableaux vivants do the talk. For the 1st time, Beecroft has worked with 20 afroamerican men. Barefooted, wearing old smokings, sitting at their tables drinking their wine, eating their bread and meat with no silverware, these immigrants, typically rejectd by civil society, now sit in a museum, facing a public forced to observe and respect them as a work of art. VB65’s catalogue boasts Giacinto Di Pietrantonio’s critical text and a rich image content, promoting a social reflection on the body and the aesthetics of contemporary art. IMAGO DEI. SARAH LEDDA VV.AA. Italian/French text Size 24×28 Pages 80 Illustrations 40 color Flexibound Release date 2009 Price € 25,00 A theme that is always topical is tackled by the artist from the Aosta Valley in a highly original way, by depicting images from famous Hollywood films so that they become the subject or the setting for episodes in the New Testament. Selecting a single frame, transferring it onto canvas and emphasizing how, when removed from its context, it is reminiscent of the iconography of an Annunciation, a Visitation or a Deposition, is an exercise that leads us to reflect on the fundamental importance that the symbol continues to have within our society. After living for decades in which chaos has been the name of the game, we are gradually rediscovering our sense of the sacred and spirituality. As well as exhibiting more than 25 of Ledda’s oil paintings, the project involves a musical accompaniment, created by the composer from the Aosta Valley, Christian Thoma, who has created a piece specially for the exhibition. The music is interpreted by some exceptional musicians: Stefano Battaglia, Eugjen Gargjola, Maria Vicentini, Aya Shimura and Stefano Risso. The bilingual catalogue in Italian and French contains a criticism by Marina Mojana. 25 art Catalogo_2010_FKT_Arte 16-09-2009 18:22 Pagina 26 Contemporary art exhibitions ANTARCTICA LUCY + JORGE ORTA B. Italian text Size 32×32 Pages 304 Illustrations 300 Hardcover Release date 2009 Price € 100,00 Born in Bihar, one of the most important centers of Buddhist teaching, Gupta now lives in New Delhi. In a sense, the artist’s life, his move from the country to the city, is an allegory of modern India, where the rural dimension of the village is rapidly bending to the influence of cosmopolitan culture. The artist’s monumental sculptures and installations, created by assembling hundreds of sparkling stainless-steel utensils, reflect the ‘short-circuit’ currently taking place between archaic and modern culture, between traditions and change. On the one hand, the monograph, which has two main sections, examines the career of the artist through an exploration of his work, from his earliest works up to the present day, and, on the other, it focuses on the exhibition entitled “There is always cinema”, created by Subodh in the former cinema of San Gimignano, which resulted in a series of works presented by Galleria Continua. The book concludes with criticisms by the famed French critic Nicolas Bourriaud and Italian Elio Grazioli, and an extensive photographic content, most of which is published here for the first time, with examples of the artist’s extraordinary creations, made using various everyday utensils and pots and pans. A master of construction and invention, whose work is distinguished by a refined sense of conceptual irony, Alighiero Boetti has spent his whole life conducting complex research into a variety of themes. This first volume about the work of the artist from Turin catalogues his works between 1962 and 1971, a crucial period of in-depth research. The generative principles which make his soul vibrate, like order and chaos, randomness and necessity, seeking and finding, 34 the equal and the different, are developed in his work through materials and procedures which are simple “but of extraordinary esthetic clarity”. It is especially in the ethics of his artistic output that Boetti infringes the rules of art, which put artist and creator on the same level. While he is responsible for the original idea behind the work, he actually leaves the job of creating it – as in the case of his famous Maps – to an expert. A total of four volumes will cover his entire output. After this volume, in 2010, another will cover Boetti’s works from 1972-1978, and two more volumes will cover his output in the periods 1979-1985 and 1986-1994. 16-09-2009 18:23 Pagina 35 art Catalogo_2010_FKT_Arte FAUSTO PIRANDELLO Edited by C. Gian Ferrari Italian text Size 24×28 Pages 256 Illustrations 60 color Hardcover with jacket Release date 2009 Price € 120,00 The complex and fascinating phisionomy of a top level author, capable like few others to avoid any classification or label. Fausto Pirandello’s work has been classified by Claudia Gian Ferrari and Fabrizio D’Amico. Pirandello is considered today one of the key Italian painters of the 20th century , sharply interpreting existential realism in a way not found anywhere else in Europe except possibly in Lucian Freud. Over 650 paintings are classified and certified by the Association for the promotion of Fausto Pirandello’s life and work. They retrace the artist’s entire body of work: from the symbolist climate of his first steps to magic realism, to the surrealism of his Paris period, to the non reality of his between the war Roman time, to war time realism, to the “concrete abstract” of his last 30 years. MELOTTI Edited by S. Risaliti English/Italian text Size 25×28 Pages 686 Illustrations 450 color Hardcover in case (2 volumes) Release date 2008 Price € 140,00 After sculptures and bas-reliefs, a reasoned catalogue of Fausto Melotti’s (1901-1986) complete graphic oeuvre has finally been produced, detailing work in this field by one of the leading lights in abstract sculpture who worked in Italy during the 20th century. The two volumes come complete with reviews by critics Giulio Paolini and Sergio Risaliti and numerous photos and reproductions of the artist’s works. Menotti’s background in engineering and music show in the formal purity of his compositions that blend geometric severity with expressive force. His lightness of touch and the complexity of his work led author Italo Calvino to define him as the invisible acrobat. The geometrically-inspired elements, linear figures and absolute formal purity of Menotti’s style are his hallmark, still arousing interest on the international art circuit as confirmed by the retrospectives organised by the Italian Cultural Institute (May 2008) and the New York Acquavella Galleries (April 2008), together with that at the Milanese Stein Gallery (May 2008). 35 art Catalogo_2010_FKT_Arte 16-09-2009 18:23 Pagina 36 Archaeology DIVUS VESPASIANUS Edited by F. Coarelli Italian text Size 27×27 Pages 540 Illustrations 140 color Paperback with flaps in case Release date 2009 Price € 75,00 Written contributions by leading experts and forceful pictures, as well as the exhibition in the Amphitheatre and Domus on the Palatino Hill which are named after the Flavians, reveal the true face of the Emperors of this dynasty. Vespasian, the elderly soldier who looked like a peasant and restored peace and political and economic stability after Nero’s excesses, received widespread consensus. His son Titus was less fortunate in life and, thanks to his munificence, known as “delight of the human race” - a renown that was perhaps underserved given the cruelty he showed in the destruction of the temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. However, during his short reign, he had to cope with the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius. The benefits produced by Vespasian’s regeneration were quickly lost and the forced tyranny of Titus’ brother Domitian eventually led to his assassination and 36 damnatio memoriae. The catalogue is divided into three parts: the first illustrates Vespasian’s ascent to power and the surrounding events, especially the Great Jewish Revolt. This is followed by contributions on the Flavian ideology, the portraits of family members and the historical importance of art and propaganda. The second part illustrates the construction activity that changed the face of Rome, from the Colosseum area to the Palatino Hill, the Forums, the Quirinal and the Campus Martius. Suffice to remember the Templum Pacis, where people could stroll past the flower beds, fountains and works of art quietly discussing culture. The third part focuses on the Flavian government of the Empire, town planning and architecture outside Rome, the provincial administration and the Imperial properties, with special reference to Pompeii. The witnesses of the era were Pliny and Martial. 16-09-2009 18:23 Pagina 37 art Catalogo_2010_FKT_Arte THE HOUSE OF AUGUSTUS WALL PAINTINGS IL SARCOFAGO DELLE AMAZZONI Edited by I. In 1775, when all the items in the collection belonging to PierreJean Mariette came under the hammer at a seemingly endless auction, an immense collection of incalculable value was disintegrated – more than 9,000 drawings, all marked with the Mariette monogram: pencil sketches by Salviati and Rubens, charcoal drawings by Watteau and others by French, Italian and Flemish artists ended up by being sucked into the mare magnum of private collectors. 38 Today, a book kept at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston contains a description of the works that were auctioned, with illustrations of the items in the margin by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (1624-1780). These drawings in the margin, rapidly executed pencil sketches, have been very important in reconstructing Mariette’s huge collection, which dispersed into private and public hands. The anastatic copy of the book is now presented in its complete form, in a smaller refined edition, as an introduction to the broader-ranging work about Pierre-Jean Mariette’s collection. The five volumes of drawings by French, Italian, Dutch, German and Flemish artists will be presented to the public from April 2010. 16-09-2009 18:23 Pagina 39 art Catalogo_2010_FKT_Arte CÉZANNE A FIRENZE IL COLORE DEL SILENZIO Edited by F. English/Italian text Size 17×24 Pages 192 Illustrations 140 color Hardcover Release date 2009 Price € 45,00 These are courageous and intelligent men and women, whose dedication enhances the value of our very existence. Research scientists, explorers, geologists, people who live for their work, unknown to any of us – yet, they are working for all of us. People who penetrate the Earth and work in parts of the world still covered in ice, far away from civilization. Their work is devoted to our planet, Earth, which is always under threat. Because our planet, like every asset we own, must be protected. Science means thinking about the future. Science means operating silently, making sacrifices, living with a sole aim – tomorrow. We only become aware of this important work when we talk to someone who knows about it and is willing to talk about it – and only very rarely can we express our gratitude. 54 The book looks at the history of commitment through well-known faces from the past: John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi. Today, the history of commitment is at a critical stage – a stage that is brimming with emergency, attention and responsibility. This stage focuses on the question of the environment. The book contains testimonials about the environment from important figures like Bob Dylan, HRH Prince Charles, Leonardo Di Caprio, Al Gore and many others. They express their hopes – some sensible, some far-fetched – and suggest projects for the race against time, and against the increasing heat of the sun, against forces which are beyond human control. And yet, always, this is about the commitment of people who are fighting our battle for us. 17-09-2009 14:42 Pagina 55 AKOMENA RON ARAD Edited by VV.AA. His son, Barnaba Fornasetti, continues his father’s work with tools and methods preserved over the years, and has helped create an iconographic archive of amazing substance and value. 2800 illustrations have given rise to a sort of “artist’s book” with a most original graphic design that paints the closest picture possible of Fornasetti’s creativity and modus operandi. The first of two sizeable volumes contains biographical notes and the most significant works he produced in the artistic field: paintings, sculptures, engravings, furnishings, interiors, graphic design, textile production (scarves and fashion fabrics) and glass. The second tome is, instead, devoted to the design and decoration of objects, from furniture to screens, panels and ceramics, retracing the history of the atelier from its foundation to the present day. KILIM Tessuti piani d’oriente Edited by T. Sabahi Italian text Size 25×32 Pages 352 Illustrations 300 color Hardcover with jacket in case Release date 2009 Price € 130,00 The kilim is an unwritten document that can be read by interpreting the symbolism of the forms reproduced in its fabric. In the history of carpets, these geometric patterns, which are inextricably linked to the weaving technique, have evolved, resulting in ever-more sophisticated and complex designs, reflecting the traditions of the various tribal communities that create them, together with their religion and particular set of beliefs and superstitions. The book examines the history of these carpets, in a detailed and searching way, thanks to the knowledge of Taher Sabahi and the expertise gained by him over many years working in the sector. The introduction looks at the origins and the development of flat fabrics, the most significant archaeological discoveries in this field, how they were used and their technical aspects. The book looks at different areas of production and workshops, which, together with a rich series of illustrations, offers an overview of the main types of kilim, with examples from all over the world. 61 fashion & design Catalogo_2010_FKT_Design_Photo 17-09-2009 14:42 Pagina 62 Furnishing ARGENTI A POMPEI Edited by P.G. Emotional crisis, taught nerves and hence a predisposition to perceive in a much more complex way than normal. These, Rota admits, are the emotions which he hopes to provoke in spectators who visit his projects. Installations that can emotionally shock people and raise their levels of sensitivity. And, to achieve this, he uses color made of light, transparencies, screens and projections (never material, painted color), an exceptional tool and, to him, vital for conveying detailed messages in the best possible way, because of the processes it stimulates in the brain. Increasingly working in the sphere of magic rather than the sphere of the useful, Italian Italo Rota’s flair for design, working abroad and communicating at an international level is described in this unique publication. The book also considers the playful side of the projects he has undertaken, creating games for adults with just a touch of magic, fun and sophistication. ZAHA HADID Edited by Michele Porcu English/Italian text Size 25x28 Pages 256 Illustrations 150 black and color Hardcover Release date 2009 Price € 40,00 Capable of translating her imagination into images, and making those images into architecture, in 2004, Zaha Hadid was the first woman to be awarded the prestigious Pritzker Prize. Courageous and with a strong language that cannot be defined by any traditional architectural label, Zaha Hadid has constantly challenged the recognized limits of architecture, town-planning and design, creating works with complex spatial entities, rembodying a dynamism and a fluidity that always relates to the landscape and the geology of the site. Her designs are acclaimed examples of a kind of architecture that transforms the idea of the future through unexplored spatial concepts and visionary forms. Her current projects include the National Museum of 21st-century Art in Rome. In 2009, the two-yearly International Barbara Cappochin Architecture Exhibition in Padua is devoting a whole exhibition to the work of this British citizen of Iraqi extraction. Soft lines which are more typical of painting and sculpture, the preparatory moments before she creates the design, constituent parts of the building which appear not to create a proper dialog and, more particularly, flexible materials, able to bend to meet any kind of transformation requirement are the elements of an imaginative language that never strays away from the path of precision. 64 17-09-2009 14:42 21st CENTURY RAYLWAY STATION (THE) VV.AA. Bracali, P. Estay Italian text Size 24,5×32 Pages 240 Illustrations 170 color Hardcover Release date 2009 Price € 60,00 At the dawn of the new millennium, what sort of state is the planet Earth in? A review of 170 photographs illustrates the state of the planet in a dual format. On the one hand, it shows the wonders of the world and its splendid natural environments and, on the other, how humans interact with Nature and how it has been contaminated by them. A journey across the continents from Alaska to Brazil, passing through New Caledonia to show how the Coeur de Voh, the heart-shaped forest made famous by Arthus-Bertrand Yann’s photograph, has been burnt and reduced to a pile of dead branches. To what extent are human activities having a negative influence, upsetting the natural equilibrium and spoiling our landscapes? This book, making a remarkable visual impact, follows the thinking of Al Gore, Nobel Peace Prize-winner in 2007. His message is to regard climate change as a real danger in terms of the future of our planet, and introduces a change of perspective with regard to safeguarding the Earth and saving energy. To raise awareness of this problem, Luca Bracali’s splendid photographs, with editing support from Chilean photographer Patricio Estay, portray the devastation wrought by human hands. IL DUCA DELL’AVVENTURA Edited by R. Messner Italian text Size 26×28,5 Pages 288 Illustrations 220 black and color Hardcover with jacket Release date 2009 Price € 39,00 Luigi Amedeo di Savoia (1873-1933), duke of Abruzzi, is a unique figure among explorers. He was a protagonist of European mountain climbing toward the end of the 1800s, and one of the forerunners of the extreme challenges of the extra-European peaks: after having made historic ascents in the Alps, he was the first to conquer Mount Saint’Elia in Alaska, he explored the Ruwenzori range in Africa, and guided a legendary expedition to Karakorum and K2, which in 1909 set the record for the highest altitude reached by man. Reinhold Messner retraces the adventures of this legendary figure, which are not limited to mountain climbing, but also include a historic expedition to the North Pole in 1899-1900, reaching the maximum Arctic latitude, and two circumnavigations of the earth by sea. Thanks to its extraordinary photographs, including many by the well-known photographer Vittorio Sella, the narrative closely follows the individual feats, described in essential texts and accompanied by excerpts from the official expedition reports and documents of the period. 70 17-09-2009 14:42 Pagina 71 MARINA CICOGNA Edited by M. Cicogna English/French/Italian captions Size 22×30 Pages 192 Illustrations 100 Hardcover Release date 2009 Price € 40,00 Most of Marina Cicogna’s photographic career has been that of a far from ordinary person as she is the grand-daughter of Count Volpi, a former Governor of Libya and founder of the first ever film festival (Venice Festival, Volpi Cup) in 1932. This eclectic countess grew up surrounded by stars and, in 1967, became a film producer with Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto and La classe operaia va in paradiso . The success of these two films marked the beginning of a long list of Italian and French film productions including Teorema, Medea, C’era una volta il West, Una stagione in inferno, Bella di giorno, Il cerchio rosso, Il conformista, Ultimo Tango a Parigi, Portiere di notte. The exhibition is designed by Dante Ferretti and held in the splendid Villa Medici in Rome. A play on opulence and theatricality, it comprises a selection of approximately 80 pictures, all in black and white, portraying actors and celebrities of the days of the Dolce Vita. The pictures reveal her personal relationships and friendships with the subjects of the photographs, often caught in unofficial moments. The graphic design is delightful and original. As well as texts by Marina Cicogna, it includes written pieces by exceptional friends such as Jeanne Moreau, Calvin Klein and Dacia Maraini. ANATOMIE DI UN CORPO SCENICO VV.AA. The story tells the tale of three generations from the same family and spans the heart of the 20th century. Actors include Lina Sastri, Enrico Lo Verso, Vincenzo Salemme, Leo Gullotta, Nino Frassica, Raoul Bova and Monica Bellucci. The score is by Ennio Morricone. FERRETTI Edited by G. Lucci Italian text Size 26×26 Pages 384 Illustrations 360 color Hardcover Release date 2009 Price € 69,00 Italy’s leading living set designer, Dante Ferretti, has an impressive career behind him. Having received six Oscar nominations, he was awarded the coveted prize for the first time in 2005 for the film made with Martin Scorsese, The Aviator, and again in 2008 with Tim Burton’s film Sweeney Todd: a consecration at an international level that placed the seal on a career full of distinguished achievements. The aim of this new, smaller-size edition, with updated and expanded content, is to trace Ferretti’s artistic career, which began in Italy in the 1960s. His career led him to work with the greatest film directors, from Pasolini to Fellini, with whom he created close professional ties. The book includes Ferretti’s most recent works, for example a preview of Shutter Island, Martin Scorsese’s latest film with Leonardo Di Caprio, due for release in the U.S.A. this autumn, and Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia, featuring the neo-star Scarlett Johansson. 74 17-09-2009 14:42 LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA 66. Zanker Italian text Size 22×28 Pages 352 Illustrations 300 black and color Hardcover with jacket in case Release date 2009 Price € 110,00 From the first faltering steps of town-planning in Rome to Hadrian’s Villa. Two of the world’s greatest experts on ancient architecture have come up with a book that covers the entire history of the city, from the foundation of Rome to the time when it reached its zenith, resulting in monuments which have helped to shape Western culture. Top international scholars were involved in the project. The book they helped to write, and which we now present, definitively broadens the scope of the “History of Italian Architecture” series. It is the prelude to other books which, in years to come, will guide readers through the centuries between the Fall of the Roman Empire and the 15th century. The chapters of the book leave no stone unturned with regard to the research conducted by von Hesberg and Zanker. The first chapters about the first efforts at town-planning are followed by essays about the 80 Rome of Julius Caesar and Augustus, the great basilicas (of Maxentius, Emilia and Julia), the theater of Marcellus and the Coliseum, and the Pantheon. In addition to these, other chapters explain how the various Fora came to be built and transformed in order to assume the layout we know today; how the city was organized; where the residential areas were, their shops and public places, the streets that crossed them; how the various services were organized which made it possible to live in the city; how the cult areas were distributed and organized and the rituals that marked the pace of public and private life. The final part of the book is devoted to memory, in other words, the ways in which the story told in this book continues to influence our relationship with past time and the time in which we live, once it becomes part of the ‘modern cult of ruins’. These simple, traditional rooms and gardens were conceived and built by Japanese masters, specifically for the tea ceremony, from the 15th century onwards, Unusual places for meditation are some of the most important sources for medieval and modern Japanese esthetics. The text by Francesco Montagna, who provides an introduction to concepts and images that are deeply rooted in Japanese culture, starts the book by illustrating the specific and unusual nature of the place conceived for the tea ceremony. A whole chapter is devoted to the actual tea ceremony (chanoyu). IL SACRO BOSCO DI BOMARZO 82 The various phases of the tea ceremony are described in detail, simple gestures which became a formal ritual. The book ends with a contribution from Masao Nakamura, the world’s foremost expert in this field. He traces the history of the chashitsu and the Tea Route, Full-size photographs by Tadahiko Hayashi, one of Japan’s leading photographers of the second half of the 20th century, together with a large number of drawings illustrate a selection of 20 tea houses, many of which have become part of the national heritage. For the first time, this comprehensive work presents Japanese tea houses, considered from every angle, for the Western reader to enjoy. The book also contains bibliographies, a glossary and a list of photographs. SANTA SOFIA S. It reconsiders his creative and professional career, and examines how it fits into the Russian and international architectural context. An exhaustive and extraordinary series of illustrations from the Russian archives where the architect’s work is kept, many of which are published here for the first time, give an insight into his designs and the artistic and creative career of one of the leading exponents of Russian design culture in the 20th century. Based on recent research, the book examines all Ivan Léonidov’s designs, from the first projects which brought him fame when he had just left Vkhutemas, the Moscow Art School, to the projects 84 which accompanied his work and research in the 1940s and 1950s. Having won international recognition with his degree thesis (1927) – the never executed Lenin Institute – and rapidly imposed himself as an icon of architecture in the new USSR, Léonidov was the target of fierce criticism, due to his experimentalism and the radically innovative nature of his designs, in the form of highly elaborate graphics. This criticism of the early 1930s marked a turning-point in his career. However, his design work continued intensively and, in the following years, became very successful, developing along lines that interpreted and re-interpreted the dictates of ‘socialist realism’, in a way that was very unusual and far removed from the prevailing form of classical historicism. 17-09-2009 16:18 TOMASO BUZZI Edited by A.G. Bucci English/Italian text Size 15×20 Pages 80 Illustrations 70 black Paperback with flaps Release date 2009 Price € 24,00 This slim monographic volume by the architectural historian Federico Bucci describes the most important achievements of Franco Albini’s architectural career. Born at Robbiate, near Como in 1905, he graduated at the Milan Politecnico in 1929 and began to work as a professional architect in 1930. During the years between the two world wars, he was very active in the sectors of furnishings and exhibition interiors for the Triennale and the Milan Trade Fair. In Milan, along with Renato Camus and Giancarlo Palanti, in line with ideas and types favored by the Rationalist avant-garde movement, he worked on the “Fabio Filzi” (1936-38), “Gabriele D’Annunzio” and “Ettore Ponti” (1939) council housing programs. In the field of design, he also designed the ‘Securit’ metal and glass radio-receiver (1938) and the ‘Veliero’ bookcase with a tensile structure of wood and steel wire 90 (1940). After WWII he participated in the renovation of some of Italy’s museums, especially Palazzo Bianco (1949-51), Palazzo Rosso (1952-62) and the Treasury of San Lorenzo (1952-56) in Genoa. He also tackled the theme of placing buildings in natural and urban contexts, for example the Pirovano Hotel-cum-Refuge at Cervinia (1948-52), and the new INA offices in Parma (1952-54). Along with Franca Helg, who became an associate of his studio in 1952, he designed the La Rinascente department store in Rome (1957-1961), the stations for the Milan underground (1962-1969) and the SNAM building at San Donato Milanese (1969-72). In 1949 he began teaching interior design at the Architecture Department of the University of Venice and, after 1965, taught architectural composition at the Milan Politecnico. He died in Milan in 1977. 17-09-2009 16:18 Pagina 91 IGNAZIO GARDELLA Edited by Antonio Monestiroli English/Italian text Size 15×20 Pages 80 Illustrations 70 black Paperback with flaps Release date 2009 architecture Catalogo_2010_FKT_Architettura Price € 24,00 The book, written in the dense, analytical style of Antonio Monestiroli, sets out to describe the work of Ignazio Gardella in the Milanese cultural and architectural scene. Gardella (b. Milan 1905 - d. Oleggio, Novara 1999) graduated in engineering at the Milan Politecnico in1928, and, in 1949, in architecture at the University of Venice, where he held the chair from 1962 to 1975. In 1947, he participated in the first INU Congress. From 1952 until 1956, along with Samonà, Rogers and Albini, he organized the CIAM School in Venice. In 1959 he was a member of the Italian delegation that attended the last CIAM Congress in Otterlo. The book takes a critical look at Gardella’s work in the field of design, starting with early projects like the competition for a Tower in Piazza Duomo in 1934, the Anti-Tuberculosis Dispensary (1933-38) and the Provincial Hygiene and Prevention Office in Alessandria (1933-39) and goes on examine the projects designed in the 1950s and 1960s: the Contemporary Art Pavilion (1951), the “House in the Park” and the house in the Giardini d’Ercole (1951) in Milan; Casa Borsalino (1950) in Alessandria; the Regina Isabella Spa building (1950-54) on Ischia; the “Casa alle Zattere” (1953-58) in Venice; the Canteen and the Olivetti Recreation Center (1954-58) in Ivrea. Some of the most important projects towards the end of Gardella’s career include: the Palace of Justice at La Spezia (1963-94); the design for the competition for the Civic Theater in Vicenza (1st prize, 1969); the building for the Technical Offices of Alfa Romeo at Arese (196874); the Carlo Felice Theater (1981-90) and the headquarters of the Faculty of Architecture in Genoa (1975-89). Gardella received many public acknowledgements over the years, including the Gold Medal awarded by the Italian President (1977) and, in 1996, the Leone d’Oro for his life’s work at the Venice Biennale. 91 architecture Catalogo_2010_FKT_Architettura 17-09-2009 16:18 Pagina 92 Electaarchitettura TADAO ANDO FOR FRANÇOIS PINAULT F. The original version dates from the 15th century. Currently it is being restored under the supervision of Tadao Ando, who began by restoring Palazzo Grassi and is now continuing his work in Venice. A common thread runs through the old buildings he restores, never exaggerating, with an ever- fresh, different approach, giving them a contemporary function and appearance. The book tells the story of the ‘conservative but unblinkered’ restoration work conducted by the Japanese architect, but also looks in depth at the beginnings of the project. It is regarded as the child of a ‘father’ (‘without whom it would not be possible’, in the words of Renaissance architect Filarete), namely the man who commissioned it, and a ‘mother’, the CARLO MOLLINO INTRODUZIONE AL DISCESISMO C. Ando has been restrained in his approach to the Punta della Dogana, conserving the strong character of the building and respecting the original architectural features. In keeping with the past and in line with the present, Ando has designed alternating reinforced concrete baffles which split up the exhibition space and, in contrast, highlight the materials and features of the original building. The book, beautifully illustrated with photographs showing the gradual development of the project right up to its completion, contains interviews with the commissioner and the architect. The vision of contemporary art and architecture in the modern world finds a useful and coherent application in the work of Tadao Ando and Pinault’s new exhibition in Venice which, with the inauguration of the new gallery, will become its permanent home. Daguerre Italian text Size 30×24 Pages 208 Illustrations 300 color Hardcover with jacket Release date 2009 Price € 58,00 The book provides an opportunity to focus our attention on recent developments in the Swiss architectural debate, through a selection of residential buildings created in the last few years by both emerging young architects and others of international renown. The selection of detached villas on which the book focuses shows the variety of language, the diversity of approach and nuances, where homologizing trends and centripetal impulses co-exist, with the aim of emphasizing the specific character of places and their territorial identity. Pragmatism, consistency and precision in construction, technical perfection, accuracy of detail and simplicity, are just some of the topoi which inevitably emerge when considering the characteristics of Swiss architecture and its hypothetical ‘Swissness’, which is in continual confrontation with modernism on the one hand and tradition on the other. 94 The theme of the house or villa, whether detached or multiresidence, from the typical Swiss chalet to the well-known examples of residential building designed by the avant-garde architects of 1920s and 1930s – Le Corbusier, Hans Schmidt, Rudolf Steiger and Flora Steiger-Crawford, Ernst F. Burckhardt and Lux Guyer, Max Ernst Haefeli, Hans Fischli, Werner Max Moser, Otto Salvisberg, Alfred Roth and Alberto Sartoris – constitutes a particularly fertile field for constructive and formal experimentation, resulting in a varied legacy to which today’s design research in residential buildings is undoubtedly indebted. The houses selected were designed by: Arnaboldi, Burkhalter+Sumi, Eckert+Eckert, Ferrari, Geninasca, Gigon+Guyer, Graber+Steiger, Gut+Gijzen, Kerez, Koenz+Molo, Marques, Radczuweit, Salvi, Snozzi, Wagner, Wespi+deMeuron and Zech. 17-09-2009 16:18 20 ARCHITETTI PER VENTI CASE M.
