Chapter & Verse FRIENDS OF THE KIRKWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY May/June 2016 NotefromthePresident... Though I was unable to attend the Volunteer Appreciation Event on March 5 due to family illness, I was delighted when the speaker, Debbie Monterrey, morning drive-time anchor on KMOX radio, sentmeexcerptsofhertalk.Theinterwoven topics were libraries and volunteerism. Though Debbie lives in the City and is a fan and regular visitor at St. Louis Public Library, she told the audiencesheisalsoabigfanofourlibrary, saying shehasusedourpassportservicesandhaspassed onthatfacttoKMOXlisteners.Shehasalsobeena bigadvocateoftheelvesatourlibrarywhoassist withtheLettersfromSanta. I'musingabitofspaceinthisissueofC&Vtopass on bits from Debbie's talk, thinking that some of our readers who were not in attendance at the eventwillenjoyhercommentsasmuchasIdid. GinnyKramer,InterimPresident ExcerptsfromDebbieMonterrey'sMarch5,2016talk: I have more than once been asked why we need libraries. Everything we need is online, they say. Well, yes and no. English author and artist Neil Gaiman says, “Google can bring youback100-thousandanswers. A librarian can bring you back therightone.” Libraries today as you well know, are more important than ever. And busier than ever. Because libraries continue to evolve and change. People use libraries for computer access to find jobs, opportunities, for the free wi-fi. For books. For games. For community. In an economic downturn, librariesbecomeever moreimportant.Theybecomean equalizer. Not everyone can afford to spend $100 at the bookstore or buy a new computer. I do quite a few events for the St. Louis County Library as well. It’s been such a pleasure and honor to meet amazing authors andsharethestagewiththemto conduct interviews. I got to do onstage events with Laura Bush, Caroline Kennedy, Jane Pauley andothers. I did a live, onstage interview with Beau Willimon, creator of Netflix breakthrough series “House of Cards.” He is a BurroughsgraduateANDalover oflibraries!Heneedledeveryone intheaudiencetodonatemoney and talked about how many hours HE spent in St. Louis County Headquarters library on Lindberghasakid.AndIcantell you, that man is whip-smart. He has Emmy awards and critical acclaimandhecreditsthelibrary forgettinghimthere. So how many of you are volunteers at the library? You probably all have a myriad of reasons why you do it. Maybe you love libraries. Maybe you’re bored. Maybe you want to give back. Maybe it’s a social thing, a fun thing. Whatever it is that drives you to volunteer, at the library or anywhere else, thank youfordoingit. Volunteers don’t do it for the praise, but let me take this opportunitytothankyou.Thank you for giving your time to helping…to making an organization better…to serving thecommunity. Volunteers are truly the unsung heroes in our society. (Continuedonpage2) (Continuedfrompage1) Some expect the government to help everyone, but let’s be honest, look at our government. Even if every level of government was efficient and selfless and well-meaning, we still wouldn’t have enough money to do everything that needstobedone. Volunteers fill that void. Volunteers do so much in our society and they do it with a passion and a purpose and a dedication that a paid employee from the government, if there was one, might never be able to match. I’m blessed. I recognize my privilege. Recognizing my privilegemakesmewanttohelp others who aren’t as lucky as I am.Andhopefullysomeofthose people who’ve been helped will payitforwardandhelpsomeone else.It’sacycle.Agoodcycle,not aviciousone. And my kids see me going off to things all the time and they say, “Mommy, do you have an event tonight?” And I make sure to tell them what organization I’mofftohelpandwhattheydo. Because I want them to know aboutissuesandproblemsinour community, butIalsowantthem toseepeoplehelpingfixthem.
