Houston is the largest city in the State of
Texas and the fourth largest in the nation.
According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Houston
has a population of 2,099,451within the city
limit. It’s a 15.6% increase from 2000 Census. Harris County is the largest of all 253
Texas counties and the fourth largest in the
US. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated that
there are 4,092,459 residents called Harris
County homes. It was a 12.3% growth from
the 2000 US Census.
City of Houston emerged as a major corporate center during the 1960’s and 1970’s
when more than 200 corporations moved their headquarters here. Currently, Houston
hosts 18 of the Fortune 500 companies which makes Houston only second to New York
City in the number of Fortune 500 company headquarters. Houston ranks first in the nation in petroleum refining, and is best known as the world’s petroleum refining capital.
Although oil and gas industry is still the largest source of Houston’s economic strength,
efforts are being made to diversify the city’s
economic dependence on petroleum products. In the last decade, Houston has become a major technological, academic,
medical, and international trade hub for the
southwest US region. The number of hightech jobs have increased over 65% since
1993, which even surpassed that of petroleum related jobs.

ALIEF
Alief is a suburban area in the southwest part of Harris County. It is mostly within the
Houston city limits. The Alief Community Association defines the boundaries of Alief as,
“Westheimer Rd. on the north, Sam Houston Tall Road on the east, Fort Bend County
Line on the west, and Highway 59 on the south," while the Alief Independent School
District (AISD) boundaries extend as far east as Gessner Rd. at some places. Some portions of Alief are in Southwest Houston while others are within unincorporated Harris
County.
Alief was established in late 19th century. It’s named in honor of its first postmaster,
Alief Ozelda Magee. Alief starts to growth and diversify since in the 1970s, as Houston
began to expand westward. Alief’s population increased by a factor of four between
1970 and 1985. Alief’s increase in population accounted for about half of the population growth in Harris County between 1980 and 1985. Further, Alief also underwent a
great demographic changes in the last quarter of 20th
century. In 1978, close to 80% of the people in the
community were white while less than 4% were African American. Today, AISD students population consisted of 33% African American, 25% Hispanic, 20%
white, and 20% Asian. Most notably, many people of
Asian-American ancestry settles in Alief since the
1970s, creating one of the largest Asian-American
concentrations in Houston.
