Valedictorian: Elizabeth Wiesen
Leland Public School is extremely proud to announce that Elizabeth Wiesen
is the Valedictorian of the Class of 2014.
Elizabeth is the daughter of Trista and Matthew Wiesen. Elizabeth’s grade
point average for her four years of high school is a stunning 3.85. In addition
to her outstanding academic career, Elizabeth was the Senior Class President,
Vice-President of National Honor Society, a Leland Top Scholar, the winner of
the NMU Excellence Award, and a Michigan Competitive Scholarship. Elizabeth
is the 2014 recipient of the LEF Glass Family Scholarship, the Boynton Memorial
Scholarship, and will attend Northern Michigan University in the fall where she
will major in Psychology.
Salutatorian: Austin Fellows
Leland Public School is proud to announce that Austin Fellows is the
Salutatorian of the Class of 2014.
Austin is the son of Deb and Neil Fellows. After four years of work and
32 credits, Austin completed his high school career with a grade point average
of 3.78. He was Student Council Vice-President, a member of National Honor
Society, Natural Helpers, Leland Drama, Comet Chorale, a Leland Top Scholar,
the winner of a Michigan Competitive Scholarship, and our departmental award
in Business. A talented athlete, Austin lettered in soccer, basketball, and golf in
all four years of high school, winning all-district and all-region honors along
the way in soccer, in addition to attaining Academic All-Conference recognition.
Austin is the 2014 recipient of the Leland Activities Scholarship, the Henry
Holt Scholarship, the John Schlueter Memorial Scholarship and will attend the
University of Michigan in the fall, majoring in Molecular Biology while pursuing
a career in medicine.

Baccalaureate:
Coming this fall!
Leland Public School is pleased to announce that it
has been accepted as an International Baccalaureate (IB)
candidate school. After a year of careful consideration and
planning, LPS will begin implementing the program in the
fall with the aim of becoming a fully authorized IB school
in two years.
To prepare, staff members attended professional
training focused on best practices in the art and science of
teaching that make up the IB framework. Veteran educators
from around the world, including Massachusetts, Texas,
China and Latin America led the sessions. Workshop leaders
demonstrated how the IB program aims to reach beyond
content acquisition to promote deep understanding across
the disciplines while emphasizing the processes involved
in learning. This way of organizing state-mandated
curriculum content makes for more robust, relevant and
engaging learning experiences. Leaders also stressed
the importance of inquiry in the classroom. Because
today’s students have a vast body of content knowledge
available at their fingertips, knowing how to ask the right
questions and use information becomes increasingly
important. Using inquiry in the classroom promotes active,
responsible and independent learners.
Staff will begin by writing IB Plans of Inquiry in the
fall and carefully examining best practice in pedagogy. In
addition, LPS will be assigned consultants to guide and
evaluate our progress in the coming year. We look forward
to this rewarding process and the positive academic
promise it holds for furthering educational opportunities
at LPS.

Chicago Trip
Culminates Honors Physics
For the fifteenth year in a row, the Leland Honors Physics
students traveled to Chicago for the annual physics trip.
The first stop on this year’s trip was the Museum of Science
and Industry followed by a visit to the Field Museum. The
day ended with a visit to the top of John Hancock Tower,
which includes a ride on North America’s fastest elevator
(94 floors in just over 30 seconds).
On day two of the trip, we made our annual visit to
Fermilab, the home of the now retired Tevtaron particle
accelerator. Each year we have the opportunity to meet
with a particle physicist. For the second year in a row, we
have been treated to a discussion with Dr. Don Lincoln
who is a TED talk alumni. The students had the wonderful
experience of watching Dr. Lincoln come alive as he
explained the question that he has driven him to keep
working for the past 25 years: “Why do some particles
have different masses? It just doesn’t make sense! There
has got to be something we just don’t understand.” There
was no mistaking his motivation for doing physics. He just
has to know.
The final day was spent at Six Flags amusement park
experiencing the physics they studied throughout the year.
They experienced Newton’s laws in a truly thrilling manner
as they became projectiles and experienced g-forces caused
by the accelerations on the different rides. This is no doubt
the students’ favorite day of the trip.
This trip has become something that physics students
look forward to throughout their high school career. We are
exceedingly grateful for the Leland Education Foundation
and the Leland Booster Club for their generous support
year after year that helps make this trip possible.

Serine Midboee Pallesen
Serine was also a guest student from Norway and the
daughter of Catherine Thorsheim and Stein Pallesen. She
is the host daughter of Mandy and Jim Flohe. Serine is an
Honor Roll student, winner of our departmental award in
Physical Education, and she wasted no time in becoming
a valuable member of our Athletic Department, lettering
in cross-country, basketball, and soccer. A member of the
Leland family now, Serine will return to Norway to finish
high school, but will always have ties to Northern Michigan
after her year with us.
Marcel Julian Rath
Marcel was our exchange student from Stuttgart,
Germany and son of Karin and Hans Rath, and the host son
of Jackie and Frank Popp. He is an Honor Roll student and
an accomplished athlete winning letters in both Football
and Baseball. Marcel will return to Stuttgart to complete
his education before joining Lufthansa to train to become
a commercial pilot, but he is now a part of our Leland
community and we will miss him greatly.
Where Has the Time Gone?
Farewell to our exchange students
As the old saying goes, “As one grows older, the days
get longer and the years get shorter.” That was certainly
the case for the 2013-14 school year. It seemed only a
blink ago we were welcoming our friends from overseas
and now, sadly, it is time to bid them adieu and reflect on
the time they spent with us.
This was a great group of students who shared their
lives with us for a year and will always be a part of our
Leland Community. We will miss them!
Florencia Sawon
Florencia was our guest student from Argentina and
the daughter of Claudia Palacios and Ricardo Sawon and
the host daughter of Judy Egeler and Shelley and Russ
Hagstrom. Florencia is an Honor Roll student and an active
member of our Drama troupe holding roles in both “Take
the Sky” and “Peter Pan.” She is an avid athlete lettering
in tennis and basketball for Leland and competing in
volleyball, hockey, and swimming at home in Argentina.
Florencia is one of us now and will be missed as she returns
to university in Buenos Aires to study architecture.
Anna Luisa Lopes de Souza
Anna was our guest student from Brazil and the
daughter of Maria and Jose Lopes de Souza. Her stateside
host parents include Kim and Michael Klein and Cathy and
Jason Stowe. Anna is a talented singer and dancer and was
a member of our Drama Troupe holding roles in both “Take
the Sky” and “Peter Pan.” She is active in the voluntary
services arm of Rotary International in both Brazil and
the U.S., participating in many charitable initiatives in
both countries. We will miss Anna as she returns to Brazil
to attend university with the goal of becoming a doctor.
Henrik Gussias Ohr
Henrik is the son of Lena and Eywind Ohr and the host
son of Diane and Bob Joyce and one of our guest students
from Norway. He is an outstanding athlete winning AllConference Awards in Football, and Area Dream Team
and All-State Awards in Soccer. Henrik’s presence will be
missed as he returns to Norway to complete his senior year
of study and continue his soccer career before heading on
to university.
Mark Smith has retired after 25 years of service
to Leland Public School. Thanks, Mark, for
the creation of The Beechnut Review and your
many dedicated years to the students of LPS.

Mishe-Mokwa “Sail into Summer”
Cruise 2014!
A great time was had by all on a beautiful calm June
evening... aside from the large population of midges on deck!
HUGE thanks to all who attended, purchased tickets, and
sponsored this fun LEF event! Each one of us aboard the MisheMokwa was reminded of the spectacular natural resources
and beauty that surrounds us and to see it from the water was
inspiring and renewing. We enjoyed delicious food donated
by local purveyors of fine food: Carlson’s, The Cove, Leland
Mercantile, Sisson’s Main Street Specialties, Village Cheese
Shanty as well as board members, Cathy Borden, Tiffany
Burda, Don McMullen and Clint Mitchell. As an added treat,
Hunter Bell, recent LHS graduate, entertained us with this
guitar and fabulous voice. Thank you, Hunter!
We raised over $5000 and are grateful for the support of
our sponsors: Green Goodness, Harbor House Trading
Co., Haystacks, Leland Lodge, Leland Toy Co., Molly’s, The
Riverside Inn, and Trish’s Dishes.
We could not have set sail without the support of the
Manitou Island Transit and their generosity in hosting the

the captain and crew and all that get the boat ship shape for the cruise!

Mark your calendars – the Leland Educational
Foundation’s annual auction is slated for Friday,
Oct. 3, at the Leland Lodge.
The fundraiser is casual, and features silent
auctions and raffles, music, a cash bar and a buffetstyle dinner prepared by the Lodge. The event is
LEF’s primary fundraiser for the year.
Proceeds enable LEF to invest in LPS students,
providing money for field trips, classroom supplies,
school events and much more. LEF is run by an allvolunteer board, and funded by individuals and
businesses throughout the community.

Did you know that by Michigan Law, winery staff
cannot pour their own wine at the wine festival? For
years the LEF has organized volunteers to do just
this. Thank you to all the individuals who volunteered
for a three-hour shift and to Sally Buchanan who
coordinated them. It’s a fun way to spend the afternoon,
to get to know some of the local wines and wineries
and it’s an important event for our community. In
exchange for the volunteer time, the Leland Chamber
of Commerce donates $3000 to the LEF. The festival
wouldn’t run and the LEF would not receive these
needed funds without your help! THANK YOU!

Leland Seniors take on
Washington, D.C.
On May 11, the entire Leland 12 th grade class
journeyed to Washington, D.C. for a whirlwind five-day
tour of museums, estates, zoos, monuments, senate
buildings and the Capitol. Students visited George
Washington’s Mount Vernon, the National Zoo, the
National Holocaust Museum, the Newseum, the Capitol,
and the Hart Senate Building, where they had the honor
of meeting Senator Debbie Stabenow. Students enjoyed
a nighttime tour of the national monuments, excursions
to Georgetown, as well as dining in Chinatown.
A big thank you for the assistance of chaperones
Ashley Suttmann, Charlie Gann, and Yoav Yaakoby,
and senior class advisor Kat Murphy who helped to
make the trip possible. Another big thank you goes
out to the Leland Education Foundation for their
continued financial contributions.
LEF Athletic Boosters Raffle: We’ve Got a Winner!
Huge thanks to all who supported our first raffle and made
it a success! To those who purchased tickets, sold tickets,
volunteered time and resources, we are grateful! Just under 500
tickets were sold, so the raffle reverted to a 50/50 drawing and
the winner is Ross Satterwhite. Congratulations to our winner
and to all Leland athletes who will benefit from your support!

Peter Pan
A Musical Adventure
Fifty-nine students (grades 4-12) participated in
the production Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure. Over
150 hours of scheduled rehearsal went into the making
Peter Pan, not including the hours of collaboration with
actors and guest artists. We, the theatre department, are
extremely grateful for the commitment and dedication
from all the students, their families and artists involved.
Financial funding of Leland Public School theatre
productions comes from many sources. The Verdier Circle
of Friends, with its financial pledges, became the matching
funds that made the MCACA grant possible. Corporate,
business, and personal sponsors, along with a fundraiser
contributed to the required funding. Heartfelt appreciation
goes out to our parent volunteers who are essential in
fulfilling the needs in every aspect of our productions. Our
awesome audiences created sellouts, shout outs of praise
and encouragement for the talent endeavors of the actors
and technicians.
Thank you to EVERYONE for your support!
Every inch – high and low – of the Performing Arts
Center was involved in Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure.
Actors flew through the air, climbed walls, hid and sang
among the audience and filled the stage with song and
exquisite fighting scenes while portraying the essence
of this traditional tale by Drewe and Stiles, directed by
Jeremy John Evans.
Through the role of the Storyteller (Sierra Creamer),
the audience was transported to Neverland and witnessed
the antics of Peter, the Darling siblings, and Captain Hook.
Combatting pirates and his resistance to grow up, Peter
(Tracy Grosvenor) fought and charmed his way into
everyone’s hearts and out of sticky situations. Wendy
(Delaney Klein), Michael (Luke Klein) and John (Remi
Masse) innocently left the safety of their nursery and
parents (Anna Hagstrom and Hunter Bell), and excitedly
followed Peter into the adventures of Neverland and its
inhabitants of mythically beautiful mermaids, loyally fierce
warriors and the preposterously perilous pirate crew of
the nefarious Captain Hook (Hunter Bell).

A VCF Gathering!
Sixth Graders have a
Grand Time in Grand Rapids
An appreciation gathering for the Verdier Circle
of Friends, celebrating the legacy of the group and its
newest members, was held at the Snowbird Inn. The VCF
members, through their loyal annual pledges, generously
contribute to the financial support of the Leland Theatre
program, allowing Leland Public School the opportunity
to offer an exceptional theatre program for its students
and community.
Graciously held at the beautiful Snowbird (bed
and breakfast of the Psenka’s), the VCF members
enjoyed appetizers and products from local Leelanau
County vendors while being entertained by the talented
Comet Chorale, Leland’s elite choral group. A cappella
arrangements, directed by Jeremy John Evans, captured
guests’ attention, especially with the Chorale’s lively and
humorous rendition of the William Tell Overture.
Thank you, Verdier Circle of Friends, for your
continued support of the theatre program since the
inception of the VCF group in 2005. The loyalty of the
Friends, past and present, is the foundation that has allowed
the theatre program to grow into its renowned status for
showcasing the talents of students-on the stage and behind
the scenes, and
assures continued
growth.
Leland’s sixth graders and LPS staff, Mr. Kelenske,
Mrs. Kirt, Mrs. Suttmann, and Mr. Houdek, and
chaperone Mr. Laurent Massé traveled to Grand Rapids
on June 4 as a culmination of their curricular studies and
being an elementary student at LPS.
Adventures included the IMAX Theater’s “Under the
Sea 3-D” that described life in the ocean particularly the
coral reefs. It highlighted the sixth grade science studies
of oceanic ecosystems. The next stop was Frederik Meijer
Sculpture Gardens, which included a tour of “The American
Horse,” a sculpture completed by Nina Akamu, in honor
of Charles Kent who wanted to recreate “Leonardo da
Vinci’s Horse.” Students also explored the indoor gardens
and special exhibit by David Nash whose medium of wood
installations had the students using their imaginations as
to the meaning of each design. After, we left for The Grand
Rapids Public Museum. Students rode an antique carousel,
became sleuths as they used their A to Z display guides to
find answers to questions, and saw “Dynamic Earth” in the
refurbished Chaffee Planetarium.
Our final stop of the day was The John Ball Park and
Zoo. The monkeys, warthogs, and flamingos were the main
attractions. Students also petted sharks and stingrays. The
day ended by eating pizza in the park before loading the
bus for the ride home to Leland Public School.
Many thanks are extended to the Leland Boosters Club
and the Leland Educational Foundation who supported
these children with funding for the trip. As this group
of students moves on to Middle School, they can reflect
upon this experience that was an educationally full and
memory rich day.

Field Day 2014
We hosted another successful Field Day at Hancock
Field with Leland, Northport and Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s
participating. Students participated in a one-mile run, a
Tug-of-War contest, and a variety of stations, including
competitive and fun activities. Here’s how Leland finished
in the events this year:
A Trip To Sleeping Bear Dunes
At the end of every school year, the first and second
grade classes at Leland Public School take a trip to the
Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes in Empire. It is a big hit with
everyone involved. We begin the day by driving to the top of
Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. From there we traverse along
to the scenic trail until we arrive at the top of the Sleeping
Bear Dunes. Along the way we enjoy the incredible views
on both sides of the dunes. After arriving at the top we head
down the dunes as a group. Throughout the afternoon,
students along with their chaperones can be found running
up and down the hill, digging holes, building sand castles,
walking the trails, finding and sharing bits of nature, and
racing Mr. Seguin to the bottom, an annual event. Mrs.
Scott and Mrs. Kowlaski are confident that a student will
beat him one of these years and, this year, Mrs. Kowlaski’s
student, Lucas Mitchell, came close.
A big thank you to Leland Education Foundation for
providing the transportation to our end-of-the-year field
trip. It was a great ending to a fantastic school year.

Black Star Farm Visit
of our trip were learning about all the jobs on the working
farm, feasting on wood-fired pizza, and holding baby
turkeys. Thanks to Laura Miller, our Farm to School
coordinator, for providing such a great experience and to
the Leland Boosters for buying our delicious pizza.
This spring the third and fourth grade classes were
able to visit a working farm at Black Star. Our guide took
students on a tour of a greenhouse, horse training facilities,
and a hen house. We were able to meet the new spring
piglets, pet the goats, and feed the ducks. The highlights

Leland Sixth Grade Sailors
and Scientists Brave the Seas
Leland sixth graders became sailors and scientists
for a day aboard the Manitou Schoolship. Fair weather
afforded students a valuable experience on May 29 from
Grand Traverse Bay where they enhanced their scientific
and geographical knowledge, while learning about being
a steward of the Great Lakes.
A few favorite activities included steering the ship,
sifting through benthos (the sediment from the lake
bottom) for organisms, identifying various plankton
in water samples, examining fish species (most were
invasive), and testing the pH of Grand Traverse Bay. This
hands-on experience brings life to classroom studies
since kindergarten. This four-hour education uses student
knowledge of mathematics, geography, life and physical
sciences. The LPS sixth graders showed their knowledge
on the trip by answering questions with ease and following
ship protocol.
Our remarkable community works to make this
opportunity happen with the confluence of the quality
Leland Public School curriculum. Our chaperones Mrs.
Karen Kirt, Mrs. Ashley Suttmann, and Mr. Curtis
Kelenske assisted in helping the crew give the students
a rich and rewarding experience on the Manitou. Sixth
graders embarked for shore feeling like proficient sailors
and scientists.
The Rotary Club of Suttons Bay/Leelanau County
generously funds this excursion. Thank you! LPS sixth
graders appreciate your goodwill.
A big thanks to the Leland Middle School for stuffing
boater bags for the Leland Chamber of Commerce!
Boater Bags are custom reusable logo bags which
contain local information. The bags are handed
out by Harbor personnel to every boat that visits
the Leland Harbor – an awesome way to connect
directly with our boating visitors!

Junior Iron Chef Competition!
Thanks to funding from the Grand Traverse Regional Community
Foundation’s Joan Rajkovich McGarry Family Education Endowment
Fund, all Leelanau County Schools were invited to participate in an
educational and exciting Junior Iron Chef event. Leland, Glen Lake,
St. Mary’s and Suttons Bay all participated in the program and, on
June 5, a final competition took place for all the teams. Leading up to
the competition, teams met up to six times, preparing, planning, and
developing appetizers, main dishes, sides, and a dessert to present to
the panel of seven judges. Each team received points for nutritional
value, taste, use of local food, presentation, and adherence to the My
Plate/USDA requirements followed by all school cafeterias. They also
had to stay within a budget very similar to that of the school kitchens.
When asked about their experience in this program, Junior Iron Chefs
responded with: “I had so much fun,” “Before this program, I had never
even taken something out of the oven, and now I can cook dinner for my
whole family,” “I really enjoyed learning about how herbs make such a
difference in a meal,” “I hope I can do this every year,” “I never realized
how challenging it is for our cafeteria staff to meet all the requirements
and stay within a tight budget,” “I learned how important it is for us to
eat proteins, vegetables, fruits, grains and dairy,” “I will always make
my own salad dressing now. It tastes way better and is easier than I
ever imagined,” and “Working as a team made me realize that I can get
through anything in life when I have good people by my side.”
Judges included representatives from the
grant, Oryana, health fields, school kitchen,
and community.
