ST. IGNATIUS CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER March 21st, 2013 Volume 6, Issue 7 FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL “All that we do is but a drop of water in the ocean. But if we didn’t contribute that drop, there would be no ocean.” - Mother Theresa Dear Friends, It has been a whirlwind term and we’ve even picked up more speed in the March Madness. This month’s newsletter demonstrates the variety, quality and intensity of events and spectacles and I’ll allow you the pleasure of reviewing the month in full colour inside. It is important to step back and celebrate the additional contributions made by staff, parents and students who are helping us build a positive, learning community at St. Ignatius Catholic School. All such events involve leadership from teachers and students, support from the Facilities team, and, of course, much planning and preparation. I am so grateful to all those teachers who have made this such a memorable month. These events also need the supporters who applaud the performance, celebrate the competition or simply join in the fun. Everyone has a role to play, great or small, in developing a supportive, school community. I want to thank you the parents for your tremendous support this term and it is so gratifying to see how engaged and interested you are in your child’s learning and development. Our newsletter certainly displays how we celebrate success and recognise achievement; a parent’s attendance makes this even more meaningful. Working in partnership with parents is a very important feature of our school to guarantee the success of our youngest through to our oldest students. We welcome parental engagement in the learning process and we work hard to overcome barriers to learning and maintain the well-being of students at St. Ignatius. I wish all our examination students a very productive Easter revision and study period. It is important that this time is spent constructively as the May examinations come ever closer. I wish you all a very special and holy Easter Break. Tom McGrath Head of School Thank you to our corporate partners for all that they do for our school! Aliyha Nelson: Yr. 9 – This is the second time that Aliyha has won this award. She is currently working very hard in all her subjects and believes that she is making improvement in most areas. She has identified Spanish and Mathematics as areas that need further focus. Aliyha is still interested in the medical profession and is focused on pursuing this as a career. She currently plays netball, squash and badminton, as well as continuing her involvement in track events. Her favourite subjects are still Art and Science. She is currently excited to be going through the option process and has identified Art, Music and History as the subjects she would like to pursue into IGCSE. Andre Jennings: Yr. 8 – Andre was born in Tennessee and returned to Cayman as a baby. He joined St. Ignatius in Year 2. READ ALL ABOUT IT! GO BANANAS AND STORY BOOK CHARACTERS! The reading incentive for primary GO BANANAS ran from February 18 th to March 6th. During this time the primary students went ‘bananas over reading’! Students read as many books as they could. For every three books (or 150 pages) students hung a bunch of bananas on the banana tree in the office. With each bunch of bananas students then had their name entered into a draw. Each class then had a draw for a monkey and many books. On Friday, March 1st we had a ‘story book character day’ where students dressed up to show off their favourite book or character. The exciting 2½ weeks came to a close with a banana split party! Thank you to all the teachers and parents who supported GO BANANAS. An extra thank you to the parents who helped to make over 300 banana splits, which the students found most a-peeling! Thank you to JLM Foods who donated the ice cream and Progressive Distributors who donated bananas and chocolate syrup for our banana splits. NEW BOOKS HAVE JUST ARRIVED! KS1 and KS2 went ‘bananas We have just received a shipment of new books. Some of the new titles over reading’ for 2½ weeks! include The Spiderwick Chronicles, Pretty Little Liars Series, new Anthony Horowitz books and Trylle Series. These books were purchased with a portion of the proceeds from Mrs. De Quintal’s candy cane sales in December. Mrs. De Quintal’s students made requests and recommendations for the titles/authors/series which were purchased. Thank you to Mrs. De Quintal and all those who supported the candy cane sales. Sixth Form students Ann-Alecia Moore and Moesha Ramsay-Howell represented St. Ignatius with tremendous confidence and poise. Ann-Alecia had the responsibility of serving as Honourable Speaker of the Youth Parliament, and she did a wonderful job keeping the proceedings flowing smoothly, as well as offering passionate opening remarks. Moesha served as the Third Elected Member for George Town, and she expressed her views very eloquently during the debate. Issues addressed on the day were ‘The Affiliation (Amendment) Bill, 2013’, as well as a Private Members’ Motion on ‘Establishment of Programmes for Special Needs and Gifted Children’. The proceedings were broadcast on Radio Cayman as well as CIG-TV Channel 20. - Mr. Rice Phone: (345) 949-9250 Website: www.st-ignatius.com The Honourable Speaker, Ann-Alecia Moore E-mail: general@st-ignatius.com SPECTATORS THOROUGHLY ENJOYED MUSIC MAN! ‘The Music Man’ took place March 7th—9th in Loyola Hall. The Friday and Saturday evening shows had capacity crowds. The Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon showings had lower attendance, but the audience members were just as enthusiastic in their appreciation! The young cast did a tremendous job with the entire production. Attendees marveled at the amount of lines they had to learn, the quality of the songs, and the coordinated dancing. The costumes and the colourful set also received rave reviews. The orchestra earned thunderous applause for their superb musical accompaniment, which gave life to the entire production. Mrs. Huggins and her able team of volunteers ensured that everyone had drinks and snacks during the intermission. Mr. and Mrs. Kosa and their team, the entire cast, as well as Mr. Donoghue and all the musicians, are to be congratulated on a terrific production. IGNATIUS GROUNDS The 43rd anniversary of Earth Day will be celebrated on Monday, April 22nd in about 175 countries around the world. The annual Chamber of Commerce roadside cleanup will take place on Saturday, April 13th. That morning, at 8:00 am sharp, St. Ignatius students, parents, parishioners and staff will also do our annual cleanup of the school/church grounds, as well as the adjacent roads. Those who wish to volunteer are urged to contact jeremy.rice@st-ignatius.com or maria.kennedy@st-ignatius.com to sign up. Garbage bags, gloves, water and a healthy snack will be provided to all participants. The first 20 people to register will also receive an Earth Day t-shirt. Please consider the following ways in which we can all do our little part to reuse and recycle in an effort to help our environment: Newspapers: Please save your old newspapers and bring them in for our school art department, or donate them to the CI Humane Society. Magazines: Instead of throwing them away, donate them to any of the following local organizations: prison ministry, CI Cancer Society, your doctor’s office or the CI Health Services. Carpooling: Team up with some friends or neighbours; this saves gas and cuts down on the number of cars trying to park. Recycle Glass: Dart has a glass crushing machine at Camana Bay. Save your glass bottles and drop them off to Camana Bay once a month (during the Farmer’s Market day). Plastic Bottles: ‘JUNK’ has collection bins at all Foster’s Food Fair parking lots. We hope to also have a collection bin at our school at some point. Aluminum Cans: We have an aluminum can recycling bin on the St. Ignatius grounds, located next to the garbage dumpster. Drop your cans off whenever you like. Water Use: Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. While waiting for warm/hot water in the bath or shower, hold a bucket underneath to collect the cold water, then use it for other purposes. Thermostat: Turn up the thermostat a couple of degrees and use fans to enhance the air conditioning. Compost: Those who have gardens are encouraged to start a compost heap, which cuts down on garbage and makes excellent fertilizer. Come up with your own ideas and think of things you can do around your home, school or workplace! - Mr. Rice and Miss Kennedy FINAL FISH FRY IS THIS FRIDAY! The Year 10 Geography classes were recently given the end-of-unit task to present the concept of Plate Tectonics through either a video or power point presentation and model. The work produced was most aesthetically displayed. Stefan’s Krakatau! Students Nigelle Thomas, Danyelle Williams and Nayo Swan worked together to create a replica of the Montserrat volcano (Soufrière Hills), while Stefan Langlois fashioned his own rendition of the Krakatau Volcano. These volcanoes were later erupted on the field and the class marvelled at the oozing imitation of lava and pyroclastic flows. Other individuals and groups created power points on volcanoes, earthquakes and even made word searches for Soufrière Hills erupts, courtesy of the class’ personal enjoyment. Nigelle, Danyelle and Nayo. Lesli Tathum and I also mixed it up by taking This volcano really Geography to the kitchen and stirred up a volcano project made entirely out of cake. All students and future geographers were commended by Mr. Reid for all of their hard and excellent work! - Stephanie Gunby, Year 10 Geography Student LENTEN SACRIFICE — RAISING FUNDS FOR MARY’S MEALS The season of Lent is all about prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The RE Department chose to highlight the work of the organisation Mary’s Meals, and our secondary students have been raising funds and awareness over the past few weeks under the theme of SACRIFICE. Mary’s Meals sets up global feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities, where hunger and poverty prevent children from gaining a proper education. In most of these countries it takes ONLY CI$11.80 to feed one child for a WHOLE YEAR! Mary’s Meals provides one daily meal in a place of learning, in order to attract chronically poor children into a classroom. This allows them to be fed and to receive an education that can, hopefully, help them to climb out of a life of poverty. Mary’s Meals began by feeding 200 children per day in Malawi in 2002. In just 11 years, the number of children fed every day has grown to a staggering 700,000! St. Ignatius secondary students and teachers organised a series of fundraisers: Give alms from your possessions Mrs. DeQuintal’s tutor group and the Sixth Form arranged bake sales to all who live uprightly, and do Mrs. Whyte’s group organized Cake Dancing not let your eye begrudge the gift Mrs. Hammersley’s class did Guess the Candy in a Jar when you make it. Do not turn your face away from any poor Mr. DeCruz-Jones put together a football tournament man, and the face of God will not Ms. Muddle’s tutor group did sponsored silence be turned away from you. Ms. Obrecht’s class have done lemonade and vegetable sales - Tobit 4:7 Other donations have been flooding in as well! The funds collected will be used to support the work of Mary’s Meals. If each of our students can raise $35, we could feed a whole school for a year! The final results will be announced in a future parent weekly bulletin.
