The coin, one of Lt(N) Totten’s most prized possessions, is made of the bronzecoloured metal cartridge brass and fits comfortably in the palm of his hand. Because of the metal’s surprisingly heavy weight, he describes the coin as more “robust” than others available. Engraved on the front of the coin is an image of the ship. Curving around the image are lists of ship’s particulars: its length, width, speed, and commissioning date, among other facts. Flipping the coin over reveals HMCS Algonquin’s crest: a fist rising straight upwards from breaking waves, holding a trident tightly in its grasp. Impaled on the spear is an eel, representing a German submarine, which references the anti-sub- marine missions of the first Algonquin in the Second World War. Designed by Commander Latham Jenson, Executive Officer of Algonquin during the same war, the crest is inspired by the meaning of “Algonquin” as “the place of spearing fish and eels.” But only 283 of these coins were given out to crew members and certain dignitaries, with a meagre 50 available for purchase by other members of the military. As Lt (N) Totten found out, the demand for the little piece of memorabilia far exceeded what Algonquin could provide. “Once we sold out of the 50 coins, there Once we sold out of the 50 coins, there was a national request from people across the country who had served on the ship. 12 • CFB Esquimalt / MARPAC Activity Guide was a national request from people across the country who had served on the ship and were contacting me via email, phone, and Facebook,” says Lt(N) Totten, who served in Algonquin for two years as a Combat Systems Engineer trainee. Soon after the decommissioning, he reached out to SGS Marketing Ltd, an industrial manufacturing company based in Calgary, Alberta, who designed a version of the ship’s coin available for purchase. CFB Esquimalt’s CANEX then stepped in, agreeing to purchase the coins and sell them in-store and online, at www.canex.ca. “Because there was such an outpouring of want for the coin, and because I understand the significance of wanting a memento of the ship, I felt it was appropriate to investigate alternate methods to get coins for veterans and retired military members across Canada,” says Lt(N) Totten. CFB Esquimalt / MARPAC Activity Guide • 45 LOVE Christina van Starkenburg MFRC Volunteer According to the National Defence and Canadian Forces Ombudsman’s report On the Homefront: Assessing the Well-being of Canada’s Military Families in the New Millennium separation is one of the three characteristics—the other two being risk and mobility—that make military life unique. Since it’s such a common aspect of military life and the separation can be anywhere from one day to 15 months at a time it can naturally cause stress on relationships. So, here are five ways to help strengthen your relationships and keep them strong even when you’re apart. Talk to Each Other While this may not always be possible, when you get the chance to chat take advantage of the opportunity. Depending on where your significant other is you can speak over the phone, through text messages, or over Skype and other similar services. Be Positive When you are talking to each other, don’t spend the whole conversation chatting about how much you miss one another. In her co-authored book, The Long-Distance Relationship Survival Guide, Kate BauerBell discusses the importance of talking about the mundane things in life as well, for example you can tell your partner about how your child was dipping his Cheerios in his milk at breakfast, or how you went for a walk and saw a Stellar Jay fly by. These seemingly insignificant things mimic the way we speak to one another when we are in the same place. Go on a Long Distance Date This one is probably not possible if your significant other is deployed; however, if they are alongside or at a different base for over long distances training, try going on a long distance date. Eat the same food, watch the same movie, play a game of chess, play the same online video game, or whatever else you can think of. Regardless of what activity you choose, set up a webcam or put the phone on speaker and talk to one another during your date. Send a Snail Mail Surprise Send your partner a care package or a postcard in the mail. If you want to send them a love letter but have no idea what to say LDR Magazine has you covered. In his article “Anatomy of a Long Distance Relationship,” Devin Redmond breaks down what goes into a love letter: confidence, openness, and personal anecdotes. He recommends that you “think about what you want to say, and then translate that sentiment into an anecdote or story that shows how well you know your partner.” Redmond also points out that you 46 • CFB Esquimalt / MARPAC Activity Guide should avoid using clichés, and that once you have a first draft to write a shorter second draft. You can also send the letters along with your significant other when they go, and just label them with things like “open when you miss me,” “open when you want a funny memory of us,” or “open on this date.” Have Solo Fun While you are separated, it’s important for you to continue doing activities you find fun, such as dancing or gaming or knitting. You can also go to programs like the MFRC’s Away Cafes to get out of the house and meet with people who understand what you are going through, and to build a support group to encourage you during the separation. There you have it. Five simple things to try the next time the military pulls your partner away from you. RHU check-in is an outdoor inspection by MPs of a deployed military member’s home or those who are absent from their homes for any reason, such as attending a course or on vacation. A home assigned with a RHU check-in will be visited by patrolling MP units nightly, who will examine the home for signs of breaking and entering, ensure that outdoor buildings on the property (such as sheds), are not tampered with, check for gas leaks, and check to make sure all windows and doors are secured. Military members living at Belmont Park, Royal Roads, Work Point, and Signal Hill are encouraged to sign up by calling the MP dispatch unit at 250-363-4384, and then complete and submit a paper form to the Community Relations officer, Leading Seaman Andree Noye. CDA_8.5x11_poster_eng 3/3/04 9:38 AM Page 1 Military Police member Cpl Alison Kidd checks for gas leaks at a house in Belmont Park as part of a routine house check. “Compared to the civilian population, our population has a high number of members who may be absent from their homes for extended periods of time,” says LS Noye. “An extra service like this can ensure the security of a home and lessen the stress of deployment.” If a home is found to be tampered with, the MP will contact the residents immediately, says LS Noye. Check-ins are also offered to military spouses left alone, or left with children, in an RHU. “Sometimes a person might not feel too comfortable with being alone,” says LS Noye. “If they sign up, we will know they have an absent spouse, and we can give them that extra feeling of security.” But despite the usefulness of the checkins, LS Noye says they are completely underused. Since she has begun patrolling in April 2014, she has never had a request for a check-in. “As the Community Relations Officer, my goal is to spread awareness about services like this one,” says LS Noye. “We’re moving in the direction of community policing, which means we can do more outreach for our members. We are here to support the troops.” Gum disease. Root cavities and infections. Oral cancer. Most people never see them coming. Also in attendance was Danielle Sutherland, Senior Manager Personnel Support Programs, and Base Chief Petty Officer, CPO1 Robert Spinelli. “We welcome this new equipment to the base for use by our members,” said Capt(N) Waddell, who also thanked the fitness staff for their hard work organizing the delivery and implementation of the equipment. He and Chief Spinelli then tried out the new equipment for the first time, testing out their upper body strength on the incline push-ups on the multi-bars and the arm walk. Both tested their balance on the spring balance beams, and ended the tour with lifts on the body weight pull and press weight lifting equipment. Following the formal try out were the Fleet School students, who completed round after round of high-intensity cardio and strength training circuits on the equipment, led by Fitness Instructors Peter Gibson, Takato Tanaka, and Jessica MacDougall. “With the way fitness trends are going, we have a lot of demand for circuit style classes,” said Tom Campbell, Acting Manager for Fitness and Sports. “This will help alleviate that demand and provide our members with all-weather gear that can be used.” The new equipment is now officially available for use by CAF members, staff, and Naden Athletic Centre pass holders. government rates Great rates. Police personnel within the south island police services area, including Military Police from Military Police Unit Esquimalt, are rewarding youth demonstrating good behaviour with “Positive Tickets.” Good deeds such as skateboarding with a helmet and bicycling safely, picking up litter, staying drug free, and helping others will be noticed, and Military Police may reward youth with a ticket. The tickets are the size of a hockey trading card and earn youth a free drop-in admission ticket to recreational centres within the Greater Victoria Capital Regional District including the Naden Athletic Centre. They can be redeemed for one free access to the gymnasium, pool, weight and cardio rooms (15+ years), and arena. However, the number of the tickets is limited, so there will be some discretion as to when they are issued. While conducting proactive patrols in the military communities, Military Police will not only be canvassing individuals for breaking the law, but will looking out for good deeds and positive behaviours by community youth. Intent of the program is to reduce juvenile problems in the community, boost self-esteem and improve community relations with youth. The Greater Victoria recreational centres and police services have partnered for several years to operate the program. This July, the CFB Esquimalt Military Police Unit was invited to participate. After consultation and approval from CFB Esquimalt leadership and the local Personal Support Programs, the Military Police joined this initiative.
