Albert Head Confidence Course
The Albert Head Confidence Course is available for training by DND units and groups.
Confidence Course training serves several
purposes such as: exposure to challenges service personnel may encounter under operational conditions; improve cardio-respiratory
efficiency; muscular strength and endurance;
as well as develop speed, agility, self confidence, will-power, determination, initiative
and team work, all of which are important
morale building qualities. Requesting units
must have a qualified supervisor attend an
orientation in order to request access to and
conduct training on the Confidence Course.
Orientations are conducted by PSP fitness
staff covering course protocol, procedures,
and obstacle demonstrations focusing on
technique and safety. Orientations are
held in the Fall and Spring each year, or
as required. Requirements for supervisors
include a minimum rank of MS/MCpl and
nomination by the Unit Training Officer/
NCO. User groups must request an orientation
and the use of the Confidence Course through
Range Control by calling 250-391-4128.

PAYDAY LOANS… DON’T
GET TRAPPED
Joyce Sharp
SISIP
If, for whatever reason, you
are thinking of getting a payday loan, DON’T.
First ask yourself, “Do I really
know what I am getting into?”
Chances are, you may not be
aware of the impact this will have
on you financially.
Payday loans are small loans
of $1,500 or less. Some people
may not see the harm in borrowing what they perceive as
“fast and easy” cash for a couple
of weeks, which they can pay
back with their next paycheque.
Others might feel too embarrassed to reach out and
ask for more traditional financial
assistance.
So are payday
loans
really a viable
solution if
you’re stuck
for
cash?
One important thing to
consider is the
interest rate and
any additional service
fees you will be charged.
Canada’s criminal code caps
annual interest rates at 60 per
cent. However, depending on the
province, payday loan companies
can charge higher rates because of
the way they calculate the cycles.
In Ontario, for example, the provincially regulated payday loan
business is allowed to charge up
to 600 per cent annually in addition to fees and/or surcharges.
Calculating the annual interest rate for borrowing as little as
$300 is a sobering experience.
For a loan of $300 the cost of
borrowing is $63 ($21 per $100
advanced for 14 days) with a total payback amount $363. Here
is how you can calculate the annual interest rate they are charging:
1) $63 / $300 = 21% interest
rate for 14 days
2) 21% x 26 (# of 14-day periods per year) = 546% rate of annual interest!
However, if you fail to reimburse by the 14-day deadline,
your $300 payday loan could
potentially cost you $1,638 in
annual interest, not including the
additional administrative
costs.
Don’t fall into
the payday
loan trap
and make
your financial
situation
worse.
Instead,
seek out
the free and
confidential
advice from one
of our SISIP Financial advisors. We understand the military lifestyle, know
the financial challenges you face
and the many reasons your finances may become strained.
Resources and tools designed for
CAF members and their families
are available online in our Learning Centre at www.sisip.com.
For more information on payday loans and their actual interest rates, visit the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (search
for payday loans): http://www.

NEW! Veteran Family Program
Transitioning out of the military and into the civilian world can be both an
exciting and challenging time for military members and their families. The
Veteran Family Program is a four-year pilot project to help with that transition.
The pilot extends the MFRC’s mandate to cover medically-releasing Canadian
Armed Forces members, medically-released veterans who release after November 30, 2014, and their families for a two-year period after they release. The
MFRC can provide:
• One-on-one support navigating the civilian health care, employment, and
mental health systems
• Help finding appropriate community resources for a family member
• Short-term counselling or social work services
• Transition programs and workshops
If you need assistance, call the MFRC at 250-363-2640 to speak to the Veteran
Family Coordinator.

Registered social workers and clinical
counsellors provide support with stress,

the military lifestyle plus much more. The
MFRC also provides quality referrals to
outside counselling resources and specialized support services. Call 250-363-2640

Free Online French Homework Help for Military Children
Voilà Learning, in partnership
with Military Family Services
(MFS), is offering free online
homework support to military
children enrolled in French immersion, or children with questions about their French homework.
The Canadian Armed Forces
(CAF) Ombudsman Report released in 2013 confirmed that
relocation to an environment
with a non-fluent predominant
second language is a dissatisfying
issue among military families.
In response to this challenge
MFS began working in partnership with other organizations and
enterprises to increase accessibility to language learning services and
training for military families.
As an expansion of Voilà Learning’s existing services the partnership
provides military children with access to free online homework help
in French.
Registration is required when enrolling children to validate that
they are from a military family. Once registration is complete a code
is emailed to parents allowing children access to the Voilà Learning
Virtual Immersion Campus.

Children find the customizable
avatar-led virtual support of the
campus appealing, as the ‘world’
they work in resembles a typical
‘école’. Plus their questions are
answered in real-time by professional teachers in a virtual group
setting.
The homework help is available
to children of military families
five to 18 years of age enrolled
in a French immersion program,
or children in the English system
taking a French course. Support
is available in a variety of subjects
on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday from 5 to 11 p.m. EST.
Voilà is a not-for-profit organization that unites hundreds of certified French teachers from school boards across Canada and United
States. The organization also unites hundreds of members, teachers,
educators and school principals with a common goal, to encourage
students in their acquisition of the French language, and to help parents meet the needs of their children studying in a French program.

military family and/or to register in the Virtual Immersion Campus

Relocation Tips for
military families
This exhibition was created by The Field Museum, Chicago.
Approximately 15,000 Canadian Forces members move bases each
year. Moving means change and the process can be a challenge. With
each new location, families need to re-establish medical services.
Spouses need to make new friends and find employment. Children
will have to start new schools, develop new friendships and find new
activities in the local area. If you are relocating this summer here are
some tips that may be helpful to your family.
Get to know the resources that are available to you
Do as much research as possible prior to the move. Find out what
benefits you are entitled to from the Integrated Relocation Program.
Develop an action plan
Make a list of all the things that need to be done prior, during and
after the move. Once you have made the list decide when each task
needs to be done. There are a lot of things that need to be done as part
of a move so spread out the tasks into manageable chunks.
Gather information about the key relocation topics
Gather detailed information about the key relocation topics that are
pertinent to you. These topics include medical care, housing, education, child care, and employment.
Make the move a family affair
Talk about the move openly with your family. Express any concerns
you may have and discuss some of the positive things about the move.
Take a team approach and have everyone participate in the tasks. For
example kids may want to pack a box of their favourite toys.
Take time for yourself
Finally it is very important to take care of yourself during this busy
time. Schedule in some fun things to do with friends or family. Moving to a new base can be a stressful time but it can also be a very exciting time. This is an opportunity for your family to see new things, try
new activities and meet new people. Preparation is the key to a smooth
move and it will allow your family to enjoy the positive aspects of the
move.
Need more help with relocation? Visit www.familynavigator.ca to access an interactive e-tool called Navigating Your Move.

What is High Five®
High Five® is Canada’s quality standard
for children’s recreation and sport. Before
High Five, no standard existed and there
was a clear need for an innovative approach to help organizations enhance
program quality and provide positive
experiences for children, which would remain with them for a lifetime. Visit www.
highfive.org for the latest new, studies and
testimonials. PSP is a registered organization with High Five.

Ways to Meet New People
Christina van Starkenburg
MFRC Volunteer
As military partners, we all know that friends are important. When
our loved ones are away, friends come in and give us their love and
support to help us through the separation. But finding friends is hard
to do when you’re a military family. You could move to a new place,
or your best friend could move away, and you’ll have to start all over
again. As one military partner, Kim Julseth, points out “you can’t just
go up to someone in the grocery store and be like, let’s be friends.
That would be weird.” So how can you make new friends?
Over Social Media
Nowadays, we have it a bit easier, because of social media. Before
you move to a new base you can track down the military spouses’
page from that area and get connected with men and women there
before you even show up.
The downside of virtual friends is they sometimes they remain virtual friends. “I speak to a few girls [on the spouses’ page] and we talk
like we’re good friends,” said Julseth, but “different people have lives,
other people have children, and I don’t. It’s hard [to get together].”
So while you can use social media as a great starting place to find
friends, don’t forget to put in the effort needed to meet those men
and women in real life too.
Grand Reopening
As a Volunteer
Another great way to meet people is through volunteering with organizations like the MFRC, hospital, or animal shelters. Tammy Aucoin-MacMullin met her best friend about seven years ago when she
was volunteering with the MFRC and PSP to lead playgroups and
watch children during the deployment sessions and coffee nights.
While she was watching her friend’s son, the two women started
chatting. “Her children now call me auntie, because I’ve know them
all their life and we support each other during deployments,” said
Aucoin-MacMullin.
Through Your Partner
You can also meet people through your partner. Encourage him
to invite his work friends who are in relationships over so you can
meet his partner. Mary Kokol often gets her spouse to do just that.
Although, just because your partner likes his co-worker doesn’t guarantee you’ll like his partner. “Sometimes it clicks and sometimes it’s a
total disaster,” said Kokol. But when it works, not only will you have
a friend to hang out with, you and your partner will have a couple
friend to hang out with too.
While these three methods will help you meet people, they can’t
help you make friends unless you put in the extra effort required.
You need to take the time to talk to them, learn about them, hang
out with them, be there for them when they need it, and let them be
there for you when you need it.

emplacements.

long de votre processus de recherche d’emploi.

Pedal power
gets easier
Geoff Munday of Sidney stows his bicycle in one of the Greater
Victoria Cycling Coalition’s bike lockers. During his daily commute
to work in downtown Victoria, Munday says he rides his bike five km
from his home to the McTavish bus exchange, where he then locks
his bike in a secure locker and makes the rest of his journey by bus.
A good marriage is taking place between public transit
and the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition (GVCC).
BC Transit has placed rentable bike lockers in strategic locations throughout the Western Communities and
Sidney area. Bikers can park their bike and then hop on
a bus to travel to work, or bus to the lockers and bike
the rest of the way. “It’s hard to get the word out there
about the lockers,” says Susanna Grimes, GVCC Outreach
Coordinator. “We understand the lockers might not work
for everyone but there may be members of the Canadian
Armed Forces who don’t know the lockers exist and could
benefit from this program.”
Thirty lockers, approximately 4’ in height and 3’ in
width, rent for $10 per month. Managed by the nonprofit GVCC in partnership with BC Transit, the units
are located at Colwood’s Western Exchange at the Juan de
Fuca Recreation Centre; the Langford Exchange on Station
Ave., next to the E&N Rail Trail; and McTavish Road in
Sidney near the airport.
Instead of making the long trek to and from home,
Grimes hopes more commuters will consider the “numerous advantages” of using the coalition’s lockers. The initiative enables cyclists to safely store their bikes, saddle bags
or clothing in a secure locker before they embark on the
final leg of their journey to work.
Grimes also notes the lockers also enable users to make
a dent in the wide-ranging economic, environmental and
physical costs of the over-dependence on the automobile.
“There has been a growing awareness about the damages
of excessive automobile use and many people want to do
something about it,” she said. “The bike locker program is
just one way to help encourage people to reduce our carbon footprint, save money and improve their health with
regular exercise.”
One added advantage of the lockers in the Colwood
location is that Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre members
can use the facility for exercise and also change out of their
clothes and shower, she noted.
More information about the bike locker program is available at:
http://gvcc.bc.ca/store/ or contact the GVCC at info@gvcc.bc.ca.

Veteran Family Program
reaching out to veterans and releasing members
Military members who are medically releasing, and in need of support for themselves
and their families in the transition to civilian life, can now turn to the Military Family
Resource Centre for assistance.
The recently launched Veteran Family Program is a four year, pilot project that extends
the services of the MFRC to meet the needs
of veterans and their family members.
Any medically releasing military member
or medically released veteran can utilize services at the MFRC for two years post-release,
says Colleen Cahoon, Family Navigator Program Coordinator and Veteran Family Coordinator at the Esquimalt MFRC.
Once a member contacts their local
MFRC, staff will work the family to assess
their needs, provide assistance, and help direct the family to any appropriate community agencies.
The Veteran Family Program might
provide counselling or emergency respite
child care to one participant, or help another search for a family doctor. The program
will also connect veterans with resources or
other programs offered by the MFRC, such
as Living Life to the Full, a resiliency based
program that helps people deal with everyday life challenges by learning better selfmanagement skills.
“That transition (out of the military) may
be challenging for some families and sometimes it’s challenging in a way people might
not have anticipated,” says Cahoon. “This
big life change adds a whole level of complexity to the lives of members and their
families. By helping ease the member’s transition, we can help both them and their family feel assisted throughout the journey.”
A newly released member can make use of
the program for a maximum of two years.
Anyone who has released since November
30, 2014 onwards is eligible.
The four year project is currently being
implemented at CF Bases in Esquimalt,
Edmonton, Shilo, North Bay, Trenton, Valcartier, and Halifax.
“The CF Ombudsman and VAC Ombudsman identified in early 2014 that there were
some veterans and their families who were
experiencing challenges during the release
process,” explains Cahoon. “So VAC created
a plan in conjunction with the Canadian
Armed Forces to establish seven pilot sites at
various bases to work with releasing members and their families.”

The MARPAC Health & Wellness
Team is a group of helping professionals who work collaboratively to address
health and wellness concerns in the
MARPAC community. Our primary
initiative is the MARPAC Health &
Wellness Strategy - an ambitious project involving over 70 people determined to create a culture of health and
wellness within the defence team in
five priority areas:
(1) Active Living
(2) Addictions Free Living
(3) Healthy Nutrition and Weight
Wellness
(4) Organizational Wellness
(5) Social and Mental Wellness
The Strategy is a collaborative initiative
that includes military, civilian and family members. Six Working Groups meet
regularly to identify ways in which our
community health outcomes can be
positively impacted. For instance, the
Healthy Nutrition and Weight Wellness
Working Group conducted fleet galley
surveys and the outcome has been
the rearrangement of unhealthy foods
(duff ) and the prominent display
of fresh, cut fruits and vegetables.
Healthy environments greatly affect
people’s food choices. When healthy
foods are more readily available, their
consumption increases.
Stay tuned for more MHWS outcomes!

The Model Railroad Club started as an N
Scale (1/160) NTRAK modular layout in
December 1997. Currently the NTRAK
layout is 30 feet by 36 feet. These modules
are continuously updated as new techniques
and experiences are gained including Digital
Command Control systems.
The HO Scale (1/87) modular layout is also
30 feet by 36 feet featuring both Digital
Command Control and Direct Current
Control systems. Some modules depict a
logging operation, mining operation and a
locomotive servicing facility.
Both of these layouts have been on public
display and have won multiple awards as
“Best Operating Layout”, “Favourite Operating Layout”, and “Best Module” at train
shows in Victoria and Nanaimo. Our layout
at “Christmas in the Village” is the perennial
favourite display at the Saanich Historical
Artefacts Society Christmas presentation.
