..Pacific orthwest Ballet started
using Harlequin floors in 1986
after experiencing slippery floor
problems and poor senrice from
other flooring vendors. Since
then we've also purchased
Harlequin Studio for production
and touring as well as specifying
it for our new studios.
We found that some suppliers
don't specialize in professional
dance flooring. But Harlequin is
really sensitive to dancers' needs,
not only in new dance floors, but
also in helping us to choose the
'right' ones. Harlequin Studio,
for example, is tailored to our
dancers' rigorous demands.
-'-~
We expect high quality
products and great
support from our
suppliers. Harlequin
gives us both."

THEATRE DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
The remarks by founding member Joel Rubin in the last issue motivated
two readers to write to me. Another was happy to read Beeb Salzer's new
column, ''The Subtext." Thanks to all three for sending me (us) their
thoughts. If readers keep sharing their opinions as they have recently, I'll
have to create a special Letters to the Editor page. Now that would be a
real milestone for me. Keep 'em coming.

just a quick note to tbank you for printingjoel Rubin's speech in the last [sullllnel1 issue. I had missed it and having it reprinted has extended its life and the possibility that it will

I read with great interestjoel Rubin's "10 Cballenges to tbe USITT" published in the Summer 2000 TD&T. As an early and longtime member ofthe Board ofDirectors ofUSITT and the
founding president of the Yew York Section, I applaud joel's challenges. They are extremely
valuable and important.
I implore the Board to carefully review all ofjoel's eleven challenges and do whatever
must be done to accept the cballenges and act upon them. The key word is "act upon them. " I
know that )/ou can meet all tbe challenges ifyou accept and believe in them.

just wanted to commendyOllfor starting the Beeb Salzer column. I've read his piecesfor
many years, and while I didn't always agree, his writing always made me think.
I'd also like to commendyoufor putting someperspective/opinion into an American entertainment technology publication. PIASA's Lighting and Sound International, Mix magazine,
EQ, and Live Sound International all bave personal perspectives from columnists and/or tbe
publisbel; and this is what make tbose publications so compelling.
I hope Beeb is tbe first ofmany!
Opinion is something I find difficult to coa.x out of TD&Tauthors. Maybe it's because most of
them are more comfortable with a paint brush or a C-wrench than a pen (or keyboard). But I really
enjoy articles that spring from a passionate place; expressing sometlling about which the author
feels strongly. As John says, I enjoy being made to think. -dr
