Hey Bros and Friends,
Can you believe that over 100 Sig Taus celebrated the fraternity’s 50th
anniversary at Summer Reunion (July 17-18) at Geneseo? The numbers
exceeded everyone’s expectations. There were alumni bros from the sixties,
seventies, eighties and nineties; even a few current Sig Taus joined the
celebration. Some old friends hadn’t seen or heard from one another in fortyfive years or more. It’s always nice to see old friends and to make new
“younger and older” ones. I’m fairly certain a great time was had by all.
A highlight of the weekend occurred at the Big Tree Inn where founder Tom DeBello reflected
on Jack’s influence in Sig Tau;
Through Jack’s drive, humor and above all loyalty he really was the cement that
held us together. From the Regatta to the Follies, to the Jenny Awards, he led
us to outrageous fun times. You could wake up after a night of drinking and
discover that you're in a barn at a Black Angus ranch or on the floor of a frat
house in Oneonta. When you were out with Jack you could never tell where
you'd wind up, but you were always assured of a lot of laughs and plenty of
stories to tell afterward.
Jack had this bigger than life approach to things - no denying there was a bit of
PT Barnum in him. We weren't ever just going to have an event - - - whatever
we did would be guaranteed to be over the top and for the most part involve
the whole campus.
After being introduced by Tom, Jack’s widow Kathe Sheehan told an amusing story of how
Jack’s soggy fraternity jacket survived a roof leak in their attic and the dry cleaners. She went
on to say how she became inspired to present the jacket to the college.
Now I need to jump back a few years to 2006 and share another Sig Tau story
that happened shortly after Jack passed away. One day at work, I returned from
lunch to find a large package that my office manager said was dropped off by a
couple of college students passing through town on their way home for holiday
break. They didn’t even leave their names. Unwrapping the package I found a
framed Sig Tau football jersey with SHEEHAN on the back and the white rose
symbol and all. It was huge and gorgeous! The jersey now hangs over our son
John’s bed at his group home…It was a very spectacular, expensive and
thoughtful gift sent from a bunch of fraternity boys to an old woman in
Schenectady they did not know….So they were the inspiration for the framing of
Jack’s Jacket when it returned from the cleaners in perfect A1 condition. The guys
in Sig Tau in 2006 impressed me! They were a class act!
The celebration concluded with the song “We are the Sig Taus…” led by John Hopf. Some of
our younger bros had never heard this song before. They were surprised and amused by the
older brothers’ performance. Luckily the rendition was video recorded and is available for
viewing on our website. More about that later.
Another highlight was the Sig Tau’s Official Celebration at the Inn Between. (See photo below).

Special thanks to Tracy Gagnier Assistant Director of Alumni Relations and her
Alumna Office staff for organizing the whole weekend. Without Tracy’ great smile and
enthusiasm and her staff’s hard work the reunion would not have been as great a success
as it was. The food was great and the events were well organized.
As a result of the reunion, the mailing list for the yearly Newsletter has
grown. From what started almost 10 years ago as a 20 member list, the
Newsletter now goes out to about 200 Sig Taus and friends. And there is
still room to grow! We now send the Newsletter to all Sig Tau Alumni
whose email addresses are available.
I hope to see everyone at the ETY 55th and/or the All Greek Reunion in 2015. It is also
rumored that next summer Phi Lambda Chi will be celebrating their 50th. Since many bros
married Phi Lambs there should be a good Sig Tau turnout.

It was great to see such a turnout for the 50th reunion in July and once again
reminded me what a special place Geneseo is and what a great bond I still have
with brothers that I haven’t seen in nearly 20 years. Through Facebook I will
continue to keep up with fellow Sig Tau’s lives, and hope for more frequent
chances to get together. For those of you, who missed the reunion, just know that
the AOPi’s brought their own beer pong table to the IB, hardcore. Also the current
brothers thought we were completely out of our minds….Don Russo (Class of

It is always a good time when brothers get together. I regret that I was unable to
spend time at the Friday and Saturday night events. The time spent Saturday
afternoon was enjoyable. Hopefully the next time, I will stay a couple of days and

Our 50th reunion was a fantastic opportunity to catch up again with many brothers
but extra special seeing those I have not seen since 1970 including Howie Kranz,
Fred Koch, Tuna and Mike Sobzak. The Pigpen is taller than I remember and it
was great renewing memories of some of our old basketball days, especially the
memory of him scoring 30 against Buff State and Randy Smith! We missed you
Tros, TAP, Moonz, Paco, Gary and Pete and it is time for Tiger, Rat and Miller to

It's tough getting old, only recognizing/remembering a few bros. But it is really
nice being a part of something bigger and more fun than you. I love Sig Tau.

Best reunion moment - catching up with Mark Secaur and Steve Persche for the

It was great to see so many brothers who were such a big part of my life in my
college years. It's been 43 years since I've seen some of them but I was still a bit
surprised to see how they've aged. Wow, I'm glad I still look so young...right!
Seriously, we had so many memories to recount and it was like they happened
only yesterday. It was important for me to "reconnect" and I hope to maintain
contact in the future. It was also good to meet those who came before and after
me including 3 present brothers. The future of Sig Tau is in their hands and we
need to do whatever we can to help them further the tradition. I think they've got

Memories of the Sig Tau
Zig Tau Follies
“The Zig Tau Follies is a yearly event held every fall at the Riviera Theater. It is
a musical variety show in which only the brothers perform. The proceeds from
the sale of tickets go to a special scholarship fund established by the
fraternity.” (Sigma Tau Psi PLEDGE HANDBOOK circa 1965. Compiled

When I was president '69 followed by Doug Dixon '70, I was called into
MacVittie's office three times. Once for award the Sig Tau banner that was elegantly
draped across the Sturges clock by our pledge class, once for liability issues regarding the
regatta, and once for the follies. Folly patrons in 68 and 69 were apparently deeply
offended by our humor. One in particular that I was in was Jesus urging his crucifiers to
un-nail one of his hands. When JC's hand was free he scratched his balls. There was
equal mixture of boos and laughs, but the boos went to the administration. John Hopf,
you were part of all this back then what do you recall?.... Dale Evan Metz (Pledged ’67,

A really rude Folly skit was the "singing telegram" circa 68' 69'. A telegram delivery person
knocks on the door of a house. A man answers the door and the delivery person tries to
hand the telegram to the man. The man says "NO I want a singing telegram. Sing my
telegram to me please. Reluctantly, the delivery man starts singing the telegram (off key of
course), "Your sister Rose is dead, her husband shot her in the head...." I wonder if the
younger bros even know about telegrams. They were actually kinda old news when I was
in college. But, it was still a funny skit according to Sig Tau standards…...Dale Evan Metz

All three were in place when I left – we had a challenge with the 1973 Follies – the school
newspaper was out for us so they sent a reporter who slanted the article against us –his
famous line was “Genesee Cream Ale kills brain cells…obvious by behavior of Sig Tau
….Blah” - we faced discipline but I don’t remember the outcome whether we were banned
or what – as the school loaned us Wadsworth Hall for the show – lights, curtains –
fantastic stuff – we still speak of Gavagan’s Skit – think of it – Lousy (emcee of show) went
on to TV fame

Memories of the Junkyard Regatta
Can you find Tom Mooney ’68 (Pledge Class), Tom Wega ’69, Steve Troskosky
’68, Doug Dixon and Eddie Mace ‘70 on an inner tube? How about Sam Trespino
and Norm Allen?
Remembrance of the Regatta by Tom “Moonzo” Mooney (Pledged ’68, Class of
’71)
This is a photo of the winning raft and crew and many drunken non-crew.. Completing
the 3 lap course and being dragged across the finish line in the '72 Regatta... In what
would go down in the record books as the longest lasting Regatta in ET history. You see,
that years' Regatta had degenerated into more or less of an aquatic demolition
derby.. Only two of the rafts of a field of more than a dozen were still afloat at the finish
of the race. Indeed the waters of Seldon's pond were awry with modern day pirates of
sorts. The pictured winning raft was an alumni entry by the brothers of the class of '71 (of
which I was a proud member). There had been some minor acts of piracy in the previous
year Regatta, so we built our ship fully prepared for any such encounters on the high
seas. Our barrels were attached on the morn of the race with steel cable….all framing
done with 2 - by lumber. Crewman Troskosky (unfortunately not shown in
the image - I think he took the photo) had his BOCES students
build a 5 foot mounted slingshot capable of propelling an
empty beer can up to 50 yards, and all crew were armed with
hockey sticks... Aye, there would be no unauthorized boarding of THIS vessel on THIS
day! She was in no way built for speed, indeed her deck with crew and several cases of
beer aboard stayed barely above the water line!! She was built to endure and endure she
did. From the start of the race we systematically destroyed and sank the completion one
by one.. First with beer can shelling volleys from the giant slingshot, then hand to hand
combat. The other surviving raft was captained by Brother Eddy Mace ('74). He is
pictured in the photo, for some reason, floating harmlessly in a drunken stupor in the inner
tube just behind us? The obvious fact that he and his dismounted craft presented no
threat to our victory was probably the reason his vessel was not ravaged with the others.
The crew in the foreground from left to right is brothers Wega (71), Mooney (71), Dixon
(71) and Kolhas (72). Standing on the raft with his back to the camera is "Mean Captain
Johnny Berry" a longtime friend and ally of the '71 ETs. He provided us with the steel
cable and hockey sticks. The remains of the mounted slingshot are clearly visible on the
starboard bow. Perhaps the violence of this day had something to do with the end of the
annual Regatta? I'm not sure, but it was a ET memory I will always cherish and
remember.. It was no doubt the greatest naval battle ever fought in the Genesee
Valley. IT was... a great day at sea!!!!

The Jenny Awards were always the highlight of the year. It was a great chance to
tell stories about brothers and recognize drunken antics and achievements. 10
years after leaving Geneseo, I resurrected this tradition with a bunch of friend
who drank and played volleyball together. Everyone got a trophy (beer bottle
glued to a wooden base) and a story, but we did not drink purple dragons…. Bob

Bios and More Memories
A little bio by Mike Sobczak (Pledged ’66, Class of ’69)…got an MS and PhD at Tulane
in New Orleans…..married 3 times – couple of Italians and a Pilipino….fumbled them all
away…..finally landed with Tall-Blond-Nurse-Who-Owns-A-Boat, that would be Lois, and I
just married her too!….I think she was born with the sun inside her….worked for an
environmental engineering firm for 30 years…..spent 10 of those in Asia and Africa based
variously in Nairobi, Cairo, Bangkok, Colombo…..spent the last 20 in the NYC area….have
spent the last 10 years in Hilton Head with Tall-Blond-Nurse-Who-Owns-A-Boat…..for the
past several years have been almost retired, but then spent 2009 in
Western Australia managing a fleet of divers, turtle
taggers, hydrodynamic modelers, engineers, etc. helping BHP get the
largest super tanker port in the world off the ground…Lois and I also spent
months traveling all over Oz and New Z…we also have been to Costa Rica,
Jamaica, Belize, Italy and shortly to Austria and Croatia - I have been in
over 90countries!….and all I wanted to do was see if anything existed beyond the whiteouts in Buffalo...I do have a shining light in my daughter, Kira Marie, who was a pro
ballerina and now an engineer with a Masters from Berkeley and now a P.E. license….she
married an industrial psychologist and they are in Houston with 2 daughters who, God
willing, will eventually steal me blind….played b-ball forever including a Cajun team in
western Louisiana and for a pro club team in Ecuador (we actually won the country
title!)….gave it up at 55 after taking 22 staples in my head driving to the hoop and finding
the bleachers….now a 4.0 tennis player and trying to hit golf balls into people's houses (so
don't live next to the fairway)….but my real hobby is fly-fishing….I used go every year to
Alaska or BC or Colorado to stand in freezing water and throw the fish back….now I fish
here in the marshes or streams in Ohio....hell, I just want to stay home and play with TallBlond-Nurse-Who-Owns-A-Boat… Lois has a wonderful heart and 3 ex’s of her
own…..between us we have a six-pack……...I believe that everyone's story is extraordinary,
equally full of consequence and importance and that each of us is a mélange of
experiences, emotions, discovery and energy flow…..but don't just wait around because
the world only spins forward……be at peace and sense the rightness of your

Billy Manza here, I’ll see what I can remember! Should have been Class of ‘89, Dec ‘89
Ceremony, “ when I kissed New College President Carol Harter on the lips “ after she left
me hanging for high 5 she had just give Doug Percival before me on stage. I got my
degree in ‘90. Never married, no kids, but almost ready to settle down with a nice girl!! I
own small IT Hardware brokerage company in Rochester, called Quest I-T Storage Inc.
Pledged in fall ‘86. Quotes: TOOOO many to list here, you all can remind me of them.
Second Favorite memory, bludgeoning the Sig Ep’s in football championship. Favorite
memory, Channeling Cyrus from “The Warriors” and getting all the Fraternities together to:
“Convince” the Sig Ep’s and the School to return all Greek stolen Property, and our TV
remote. “I got the DK’s and the Phi Kaps, next to each other, The Phigs and the Omega’s,
everyone in the Omega house, nobody wasted anybody! CAN YOU DIG IT?” (Billy Manza,

Billy - you forgot to mention how you then got us all arrested for participating. Kevin

Those are your memories. I had 3 felony charges as the “ring leader”. It cost me $100 and
20 hours of Community service to get 3 felony charges dropped!!!
I remember that! (Billy Manza, Pledged ’86, Class of ‘90)
Dave Mead (Pledged ’65, Class of ’68)I think many of the newer members might be
interested that the boys dorms (Blake, Fraser, and Sturges) were what is now called Blake
A, B, and C. That is where all the boys were required to stay their freshman year at least
from 64-65. I don’t have a ton of memories from that year but do remember that after one
keg party I woke up late morning still in my bed which was now located
under the flag pole in the middle of the Quad. There was quite a crowd
gathering around me waiting for me to jump out of bed. That would
have been very embarrassing as I had slept with very little on! I wrapped
myself in my sheet and went back into the dorm to get dressed.
Somehow the bed got returned. Apparently that made an impression on
me as I still remember it today!
Dale Evan Metz (Pledged ’67, Class of ’70) When I left RIT and came back to
Geneseo, I was teaching a class in Sturges 219. The course was Speech/Voice Science
221. Acoustics and physiology of the voice was the content. There was also some physics
and some math and my wonderful humor. After the first exam one year, a lovely young
woman came up to the front of the room to turn in her exam and said "Hi Dartman." Of
course Dartman aka Dartzo was my frat name thanks to Don Peterson
after I shot a dart into a hall mirror in Genesee Hall trying to hit him.
The name Dartzo is on my frat mug and I cherish it. I hadn't been called
Dartman in 30 years. I was dumbfounded and laughing out loud. It was Al
Smith's daughter who turned her exam in and called me Dartman. Al obviously
coached her (thanks Al). She was fantastic and she pulled it off with absolute confidence.
She was also an "A" student. Small world bros!
Kevin Foody (Pledged Spring '88, Class of ’91) I currently live in Fairport NY. I have
3 boys keeping me busy with baseball and football. I currently work for
Manning & Napier as the Software Quality Assurance Manager………One of my
many memories involved a trip to Kelly's. 5 or 6 Brothers went on a Friday
around 12 PM. We started playing a game of chance with dice and making each
other do stupid stuff. Some examples include Brother Greg Walsh (Bird) having
to kiss a dog under the pinball machine and the dog biting him on the face. I
had to run from Kelly's around the Bear and back in nothing but my boxer shorts. Keep in
mind it was around 2 in the afternoon and there were people everywhere. We ordered a
shot of warm Vermouth and instead of the bartender pouring the shot and giving it to us;
he heated in the microwave for 10 seconds. This was a onetime event and I don't think I
laughed so much in my entire 4 years.
Rich Romito (Pledged fall 88, Class of ’90). Played lacrosse for 88 & 89 seasons.
Married for 16 years to Claire. Have three beautiful children, Lauren, LJ and Jenna. I am
currently an Assistant Principal for Eastern Suffolk BOCES. Live in Hauppauge NY. Famous
quote” Get to your libraries”
Doug Percival (Pledged ’86, Class of '89) Pledged Sig Tau spring of '86. Little brother
Scott Valyear. Living in Savannah, GA with daughter, Madelyn, and a long-time medical
rep. Favorite 2 college moments: Shutting out the Sig Eps in the football title
game while tensions were very high. Truly best time was when one Eric
Reinhart and I strolled to the back of the AGO house during yet another
breakfast. There we found the huge plastic tarp used on final bids. We ran that
sucker down their hill, found the hose, and that day was forever known at the "Luge
Breakfast." All previous breakfasts were from 7-5pm roughly. This blowout was 7am4am. Unbelievable time!!!!
I have a 2 inch “ AGO LUGE” scar on my left knee as a reminder of that day, and I was
social director with Jim Arpey that semester., I think we went through 14 total kegs with
just the Ago’s, what a day! Where were camera phones when we needed them? Billy

Among all of my favorite memories of being a brother was the fall of '70 and spring of
'71. Sig Tau completed the Triple Crown of Intramural Athletics by sweeping
championships in football, basketball and softball. In the fall of '69, we had won the
intramural soccer championship. I believe that before I arrived on campus in the
all of '68, it was in the spring semester of '68, Sig Tau won its first intramural
championship and that was in swimming. I cannot
begin to list all of the brothers who were members of
these various teams, but I know that it sure felt good
to hoist the championship trophies in front of our
Greek and Independent rivals! Of course, there was
a copious amount of Genny Cream Ale that was
consumed during the post-game celebrations… Al “Smitty” Smith (Pledged ’69, Class

Rod Curran (Pledged ’69, Class of ’72) During the 1970-1971 school year the Sig
Tau sports teams had an impressive run in the primary intramural sports competition.
In the fall of 1970, the Sig Tau football team advanced undefeated through the
season, into the single-elimination play-off. The team won the championship. In the
winter of 1971, the Sig Tau basketball team advanced through the basketball season,
into the single-elimination play-off. The team won the championship. In the spring of
1971, the Sig Tau softball team advanced through the softball season, into the singleelimination play-off. The team won the championship. In the fall of 1971, the Sig
Tau football team again advanced undefeated through the season, into the playoff. The team won the championship – again.
Doug Percival (Pledged ’86, Class of '89) This was my first Deja Vu
experience......sitting at the table playing sexual thumper at 10am. Then again at 10pm
wondering if I had ever left that chair! Inn Between lost money that night for sure!
Rob Donley (Pledged Fall '89, Class of '91) Big Brother is Brian Shaw, Little Brother is
John Barrett. Married 16 years to my beautiful wife Dawn. We have 2 wonderful boys,
Bobby, 10 and Brendan, 8. I am Director of Construction & Maintenance Services at W
Services Group and live in Commack, NY. The best thing about the Reunion in July and
about being a Sig Tau in general is that no matter how much time passes between these
events and get-togethers; it instantly feels like we have all never been apart. That is true
friendship and I really do appreciate and miss all of the brethren from during our years
together in G- Town. I wish more could have attended and we should make more efforts to
keep in touch with one another. Just exchanging stories about the old days made it feel
like those who couldn't attend were actually there. Most memorable moments from
college... everything I can remember and some that I wish I could forget, but never any

After graduation - worked at Geneseo as Assistant Director of the College Union and
extended my Geneseo experience another 4 years. 1985 -moved to Atlanta, worked briefly
in public event management then in Marketing for Safeco Insurance. 1986 – Married Linda
Clyde (class of ’82) 1987 - Moved to Charlotte NC. Currently – Territory Manager for Safeco
Insurance, Charlotte, NC. Married, two sons ages 22 and 26. Life is good, play golf, travel
to the beach and the mountains, still party with friends.
Ken Crofts, (Class of ’73) Married Barbara Patt (class of "74) 40 years ago. 4 children
and 8 grandchildren so far, ages 1 to 19. I retired from General Motors after 40 years on
April 1, 2013. Currently living in Leesburg, Florida.
Carl Kanoff (Pledged ’68, Class of ’70) I remember going on road trips with the
brothers. I'm not sure if it is because of the length of time that has passed since events
occurred or because of other factors like a few too many beers consumed, but details are
sketchy. One time, we traveled to Oswego for the Sigma Tau Chi regatta. While we held
our regatta on a small cut-off oxbow of the Genesee River, their regatta
was on the lake. Another time, we went off to Cortland and stayed at the
Gamma Tau Sigma house. There were too many bars to visit in Cortland but
we tried. I remember that before we came back to the house, we stopped in
to visit the DK house up the street. I don't remember which of the trips it was,
but we stopped near Rochester and picked up a couple of gallons of
homemade hard cider. Strange how beer and cider causes the formation of
intestinal gases. Somewhere on the Thruway between there and our
destination, I was told to stop polluting the air in the car or I would walk the rest
of the way. Remembering the night when we were pledges and were dropped off
miles from campus with no idea where we were, I tried my best not to pass any more.
Don Russo (Class of ’93) lives in Fairport, NY with his wife Jean (Rosati) and children
Jillian and Nathaniel. I worked for nearly twenty years in Radio/Television Advertising
before changing careers recently. I am currently working in Surgical
Management/Consulting in the Buffalo/Rochester territory for Integrated Medical Systems,
which is based in Birmingham, Alabama. After Geneseo I earned my Master’s Degree in
Management from Nazareth College in Rochester. I enjoy spending time with my family,
especially the kids’ sports. Also, I remain loyal to my Buffalo Bills and Sabers. I also enjoy
competing in triathlon and running events throughout Western New York.
Phil Connery (Class of ’83) I, and the brothers I knew while at Geneseo from '79-'83,
have some great memories/stories especially those from the house at 11 Banks Street and
at Fat Augies! Many of us worked at Augies and on most nights we would proceed to Jack
Carr's for a late night/early morning snack and then to "the house" for after-hours parties.
When we woke up, we usually headed to the Vital (our kind neighbor), Aunt
Cookies or Kelly's for lunch, grab a nap, sometimes we would go to class, and
start this viscous cycle all over again. It was great; I am not sure how we got
through, but we did and collected many great memories of ETY along the way.
We also took our intramural sports very seriously and were champs in pretty
much all the sports we participated in...Victory always tasted sweet, especially
when we took down the DK's! LOL Several of us have come back for
Homecoming a few times over the years and it's been great catching up with and
staying in touch with our brothers of Sigma Tau Psi. A handful of us have been meeting in
Saratoga the last weekend in July for golf/track/bar for about 5 years now. We regret not
being able to make it to the 50th but it looks like a great time was had by all. I recently
took my daughter, Lucy, for a college visit to Geneseo (see photo above at the old house
at 11 Banks St. front porch) and was disappointed not to see Sig Tau listed as a Greek
organization in the flyer that was handed out. I also noticed our colors were not shown in
the most recent Geneseo Scene publication that showed most, if not all, other
frats/sororities. I figured we were under double-top-secret probation, or something, which
we were from time to time familiar with, but when I emailed an admissions counselor, he
responded and assured me it was an oversight that would be corrected in future
publications. Best wishes to all of you. Stay in touch!
John Ferris (Pledge Spring ’85, Class of ’88) Served as President my senior year. I
decided to move to Boston after hearing a glowing report about the City from an alumni
brother back for Spring Alumni Weekend. Received MBA from Babson College and moved
to Silicon Valley. Spent seven years in California. Helped bring one company public.
Moved back to Syracuse, NY my hometown in 2002. Started my own business managing
and owning apartment buildings. I’m up to 115 investment units now. Work full time in
construction for a real estate developer. Married to Corri Zoli, two children Arabella age five
and Maxine age 14 months. Best college experience: Studying abroad for a semester in
London. Best fraternity experience: Ongoing. The only folks I keep in touch with from
Geneseo are ETY Brothers. Biggest Regret: Not attending the 50-year reunion in July.
Dale J. Metz (Pledged ’65, Class of ’68) “Dale Metz has a diverse background of
education and experience which has served him well for over 34 years as a non-profit
executive director, principal, and teacher. For 21 years he served as Principal of Gateway
Education Center in Greensboro. The school serves over 300 children from birth to age
21with multi-disabilities including autism, severe and profound developmental disabilities,
cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and life threatening medical problems. Over those
years the school became a national model school and received numerous awards for
service to children and their families.” This is edited from Southern Living and the Wachovia
Principal of the Year program.
Christian (Chris) Vanni, (Pledge Class of Spring '88, Class of '91) Tried to "walk
on" the men's varsity soccer team in the fall of '87 but did not make the team (but made
great friends). Live in New Rochelle, NY with my wife of 10 years, Kim, and our 14-monthold son, Christian. Decided that four years of "studying" wasn't enough, so went to NYU
and received my MBA with the Class of '02. Currently a banker working in the New York
City area.
Favorite Sig Tau memories: 1) AGO breakfasts, 2) stealing the Oar from
our pledges sleeping in the library, 3) final bids, 4) living in the Sig Tau
house (10 Court St.) my senior year, 5) having dinner and watching the
Simpsons with the AGOs on Sunday nights, and 6) quarter drafts and 10cent wings at the Inn Between.
Geneseo moments I will never forget: 1) actually getting accepted to the school…I didn't
think my grades/scores were good enough, 2) sunsets over the valley, 3) having "mono"
my freshman year and not being able to play sports or consume "beverages" for two
months, 4) living in Monroe my freshman and sophomore years, 5) Sundance Books, and
6) the night I became a Sig Tau.
While I don't see many of the brothers on a regular basis anymore, being in Geneseo for
our 50th anniversary was as if I had never left. The conversations, the antics, all the "I
remember when…" We picked up right where we left off the last time we all saw each
other…it was like it was yesterday. And to this day, all of my closest friends are Geneseo
Sig Taus. I think it is this camaraderie and these life-long friendships that define Sigma
Tau Psi and that make my decision to pledge one that I'll never regret.
Favorite Reunion '13 moments: 1) seeing Jack Sheehan's Sig Tau jacket and hearing his
wife tell the story about it. Thank you, Jack, and to all of the founding brothers for your
dedication to starting the fraternity. Without it, I would not have had the experience I had
in Geneseo or the friends that I have today; 2) being in the Inn Between again…some
things never change; and 3) just being there.
Kaie Fuhrhop (Sig Taus Overseas Brother, Pledged ’65) As some of you may still
remember I had to leave the US in a hurry because the immigration office traced and
finally found me. My one-year visa had long expired.
By the way I was not Sig Tau’s first foreign exchange student. I was studying Agriculture in
Germany and planned to continue at Cornell. But I somehow got stuck in Geneseo, worked
here and there and had such a great time that I could have stayed. But the immigration
people in Buffalo just granted me two weeks to leave the
country. Otherwise it would have been the army.
It was Joyce Bullock who urged me to an “alcofrolic” Sig Tau
pledge party, and shortly after that I was admitted. At that time
I lived and worked on Morris Niedermeyer’s Farm outside of
Geneseo. On the way back from the party I dozed away and
wrecked the left hand side of my Dodge Country Sedan in the left hand ditch but got away
with a few bruises only. To keep the story short I will not write about other disasters or
happier events.
After having paid my debts and fled the States with a lot of help of Joyce I finished my
studies in Germany. Actually I had promised Joyce I would come back but that was not
possible because of a number of reasons. I still feel sorry about that. Instead of working in
agriculture itself I added another two-year education and became an editor, first with
agricultural trade journals. From there I moved as a press officer to one of the (today)
biggest agricultural machinery manufacturers in the world. But after two years this became
a little boring. Then I was offered a job as head of the economics editorial department of a
daily newspaper, a profession I really enjoyed. I worked for dailies for a few years.
During that time I made my first consulting contacts, which led to becoming self-employed
(1973) and ultimately to founding my communications & marketing company (1976) which
I am still running today. During its busiest time I had about 30 employees plus freelancers
who generated plenty of turnovers. Today my daughter (31) who studied politics and
marketing communication (MA) is gradually taking over. My son also studied agriculture
and runs a farm of 2.000 hectares of which 700 are white asparagus.
Whereas I originate from Hamburg (Germany, not NY!) I am now living and working
(home office) in a house with thatched roof in the former East Germany in the lake district
of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).
My saga begins when I moved into the Genesee Dorm and because Mike Sobczak was our
RA, most of us pledged Sig Tau in spring of 1968. Despite many of my family's
expectations, I graduated on time in June of1971. Subsequently I earned a Masters +
from the University of Rochester in Educational Leadership.
Steve Troskosky (Pledged ’68, Class of ’71) My 34 years in public education began
teaching disabled children at BOCES #1 Monroe County. After 7 years in the classroom, I
was awarded a full time paid fellowship at the University of Rochester. Being at a standstill
and getting no support from my University advisor, I accepted a short term educational
leadership job to coordinate the closure of 4 inner city elementary schools for the
Rochester City School District, after giving a speech on my research. This was a 12 month
position and when the school consolidation was complete I then moved on to become the
Director of Special Education for the Otsego-Northern Catskills BOCES. Then, 14 years
later I went on to lead the Allegany- Limestone CSD through a successful school merger
and a $50+ million school construction and remodeling projects. I retired in 2005.
I've been married and divorced twice. I have 3 really good kids aged 28, 30 and 38. All
have done well in school and view one another as true brothers and sister. They amaze
me. The two boys are located in the Buffalo/Rochester region. The oldest son is married
with two daughters and they live in Pittsford, NY. My daughter is my youngest and has
just accepted a position as a Dr. of Physical Therapy at the Children's Hospital in Patterson,
NJ. If all goes as planned she'll marry next June. I've been in a really good relationship
going on 5 years. Nancy and I live in Colorado year round. The summers are spent
together just outside Rocky Mt. National Park, but come winter Nancy's in Boulder and I'm
in the Vail area. I have a condo in Avon, Colorado.
Among some of the interesting vocational experiences I've had are: National "poster boy"
model for AARP when they launched their "Fresh Faces of Fifty campaign in 2000; EMT
Ambulance Crew Chief for 15 years the last 5 of which I was the medical officer for the
Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team. In addition to EMT skills I had
to pass the same physical qualifiers as an entry officer.
And what was an avocation for many years has now become my vocation. I started
teaching skiing at Swain when we were Freshman and kept active in ski teaching on a part
time basis with public education being the real career. This past season the Professional
Ski Instructor Association (PSIA) acknowledged my 45 years of ski teaching with
a "Platinum" Level III certification pin. In 2004 PSIA-E awarded me the PSIA-E
Masters Award for my contributions to the sport. Since retirement, first I
worked 6 years as a full time ski instructor for Steamboat Springs Ski Resort.
Now, after a successful rookie season this past year, I will be returning again
as a Full Time instructor at Vail. Last year I skied 101 days. I'd only know this
stat because they measure it automatically; I managed to ski over 1.25
million vertical feet first year. It amazes me that my body has allowed me to
do this for so long. I'm leaving 14 years as a Factory Pro Rep for the Nordica
Ski Company and this year I'll just be representing the APEX boot.
That's what has kept me busy for the past few years since I pledged Sig Tau.
Sorry I could not make the big party this summer.

On August 24th, 2013 in Rochester, NY legendary Sigma Tau Psi brother Jeff
Davison (Fall ’01) married Geneseo grad Laurel Justinger in what could be considered one
of the greatest Sig Tau reunions to date. Jeff, popularly known as “J Bone” (AIM Screen
Name ETYGuy14), was a business major and resident at the (infamous) 10 Court Street.
He successfully served as the fraternity’s Master of Rituals, President, and Social Director,
and worked diligently to keep Sig Tau thriving during his time as an active brother. The
couple was married at Chapel Hill in Rochester by fellow ETY brother John Bruno, who
recently had the power invested in him by the State of New York via the internet. ETY
Nick Willesmen also provided a heartwarming reading during the ceremony, as brothers
Brian Powers, Fran Broderick, and Evan Wright supported Jeff as Best Man and
groomsmen. Following the ceremony friends and family gathered for a country-chic,
vintage themed reception at Mario’s Italian Restaurant.
Early in the evening the guests were treated to a solo acoustic performance by Sig
Tau Fran Broderick, whose rendition of “Wagon Wheel” maintained the subtle charm and
edge Fran was best known for during his years engaging us after hours. There were MJ
inspired dance-offs, memories shared, hugs, high-fives and handshakes as the crowd
danced the entire night to music provided by Rochester’s favorite turntablist, DJ Naps. The
bride looked stunning as she danced the night away with her closest family and friends.
Several AGOs were in attendance, and fortunately, there wasn’t a DKT for miles. In true
Geneseo fashion the celebration continued into the wee hours of the morning, where at
one point Dave Passero could have sworn he saw Bash hovering over us as we
congregated in the corner of a Rochester bar.
Though no fraternity songs were sung, it was clear the brothers were ecstatic to be
reunited in a celebration for Jeff and Laurel. During his 5 years as a student, Jeff had the
uncanny ability to unite and inspire people to their greatest potential. The couple resides
in Penfield, NY where Jeff works for Mindex Corporation and Laurel as a Special Education
teacher. They plan to honeymoon somewhere tropical in February, and knowing Jeff and
Laurel, it will surely be a party!

Passing of John Hoey
Jack Morrell (Pledged ’63, Class of ’65) I just read in the Geneseo Scene of the
passing of Dr. John Hoey (May 11 2013), Professor of English. More important to Sig Taus
of 1965 like Jim Burk, Pat Pallend, Don Fuller (RIP), Roy Howard was John
starting the Lacrosse Club at Geneseo. I remember many snowy spring
practices finishing at the Big Tree…..An associate professor emeritus of
English, died on May 13, 2013. A faculty member from 1965 to 1994, he
co-founded the club lacrosse team, helped students establish a club rugby
team, coordinated a squash team for students, faculty, staff and community
members, and was instrumental in establishing the Crew Club.
