The BVDC “Trot & Track” program is for all who drive. In this program, you keep a record of the time you spend driving
your horse or pony, and goal-hours achievement will be recognized at 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 hours of driving
time plus all "century" marks above 250 hours. Any time you spend driving, EXCEPT shows and other competitions, will
count towards your “Trot & Track” hours. The hours you track do not have to be related to a club-organized activity. The
“Trot & Track” allows members from all over to participate at their convenience. Hours continue to accumulate in
subsequent years. Awards are given annually at the BVDC Holiday Party in December.
To participate in the “Trot & Track” program, you need to be a BVDC member, and register to take part in this
program. Link to the Trot and Track Application Form: http://www.bvdc.org/BVDCTrotTrackApp.pdf

The story of a 100-hour achiever….
“Peter” (My Dreams Pure Platinum) had a promising beginning with his driving career. I trained him and my
husband showed him for about the first three seasons. He moved up quickly from novice to the open division
(VSE). Then my husband gradually became less and less interested in horse activities. Soon he stopped
working with Peter altogether. Eventually I convinced him to give me the OK to take over training this
beautiful horse. I began retraining him (the horse, not the husband) in Spring 2010. Now at 11 years old,
Peter is getting stronger with each season of work and shows real promise of becoming competitive in the
open division.

Notice of Action of the BVDC Board of Directors
via e-Mail in lieu of a Special Meeting
On December 3, 2011, an ongoing dispute with a vendor for the 2011 Brandywine Carriage
Driving Show was settled by action of the BVDC Board of Directors. In the second week of
November, Jon Paul Beauchamp, who provided the equipment and managed the
communications and PA systems for the show, contacted the Board directly via e-mail to settle
an ongoing invoicing dispute, and seek reimbursement for 3 Vertex 2-way radios that were
apparently lost at the show. The invoicing dispute was settled quickly and, after weeks of
deliberation, in lieu of any factual evidence substantiating the loss, and in the interest of
maintaining good relationships with vendors, the Board voted in favor of paying Jon Paul $633.00
for the missing radios.
Submitted by Margaret Grillet, President (2010 - 2011)
If anyone has knowledge of the whereabouts of the 3 missing radios, please contact

Was Spencer a Good Boy this Year?
November 14th was the first "pet nite" photos with Santa
at Cumberland Mall in Vineland NJ for 2011. BVDC
members Debbie Wolf and Cindy Boddy, along with
Gloucester County 4H members Luanne and Brandi Leach
took their Miniature horses into the mall !
Trying to park three rigs in the mall parking lot, backing
into a precarious space with the help of mall security (who
never drove or backed a trailer in his life) was the most
stressful part of our adventure. All horses Spencer,
Romeo and Phoenix, behaved. Romeo was dressed as an
elf, complete with pointy shoes. We all had a blast and
plan on making it an annual event. Anyone with a mini is
welcome to join us!

Third CAA / CWF International Carriage Symposium
January 11–15, 2012
Williamsburg, VA
Ruts, Roads, and Runabouts: 200 Years of Horse-drawn Transportation
We hope you’ll join the Carriage Association of America (CAA) and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (CWF) as we
welcome fourteen leading European and North American scholars to our third International Carriage Symposium. You’ll
hear lectures on a wide variety of topics that touch on all aspects of horse-drawn transportation. And you’ll have several
opportunities to explore Colonial Williamsburg and to meet the men and women who practice eighteenth-century crafts
and trades. As only one of several social activities, Thursday evening will feature a party to kick off the year-long
celebration of the CAA’s fiftieth anniversary.
For BVDC members: The CAA Chapter Representative Grant provides the opportunity for a designated chapter
representative to attend a CAA Conference or Learning Weekend at no cost for the program - a $335 value
(travel and lodging arrangements will be the financial responsibility of the attendee). The chapter representative
must be a current CAA member and must agree to report back to his or her fellow chapter members regarding
the content and knowledge learned at the symposium, either in print or in person.
This year the educational grant was awarded to BVDC member Barbara Haertlein. We look forward to
hearing about what she learns!

Laurels at Landhope, retired after two decades
After 25 years as a featured equestrian event on the Delaware Valley fall schedule, the Laurels at Landhope is ending its run. Led by Jamie O’Rourke, of Unionville, Pa., for much of the last two decades, the event
grew from its roots as a small schooling driving trial, located at Maresfield Farm in Unionville, to international
recognition by the FEI and to its selection as the site of multiple USEF National Championships and international
selection trials. In 2002, the event moved from Unionville to its present location, a 44-acre site at Landhope Farm
in West Grove where, under his direction, it was developed into a venue specifically designed for combined driving, one of only two in the U.S. “The Laurels has hosted competitors from Holland, Mexico, South Africa, Canada,
New Zealand and Australia,” said O’Rourke.
O’Rourke, whose retirement was planned after the end of the 2011 event, said that the Laurels has
grown to the size of a small corporation and, in its present format, needs someone who can devote much more
time to it. In recent years, he has been concentrating on coaching, training coaching horses, drivers and pleasure
driving horses, course designing and is currently serving as one of the Vice-Presidents of the Devon Horse Show
and Country Fair where he is the co-chairman of the carriage marathon and co-chairman of coaching.
There is still strong interest in continuing to host a driving event at the site on the same dates. Spearheaded by Lisa Stroud of West Grove, Pa., Lisa Singer of Chadds, Ford, Pa., and Newt Brosius of Avondale, Pa., an
exploratory committee has been formed to plan a new show called the Willow Glen Combined Driving Event that
will be open to preliminary, intermediate and advanced in 2013. Stroud said, “We plan to use 2012 to make a
fresh start. The new committee will use the time to plan a competitor friendly event and to try to generate the
enthusiastic support that has made the Laurels at Landhope such a great success for so many years. We will hold
a driving event on the same dates in 2012 but as yet we’re not sure what format it will be.”
Stroud went on to say that everyone associated with the Laurels owe O’Rourke a huge thank you for his
dedication and leadership.
During its tenure, the Laurels at Landhope has donated over $260,000 to its beneficiaries: The University
of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center, the Large Animal Protection Society, the Brandywine Conservancy and the
Cheshire Hunt Conservancy.

Happy New Year!
from the (New) BVDC President
The holiday rush is over for another year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season
enjoyed with family and friends. Thanks to our faithful hard-working BVDC elves, the
annual Holiday Party and general membership meeting was again a big success and
another happy memory of time spent with our driving friends, both old and new!
Now it’s time to get down to the business of planning another year for the club. As I take the reins from Margaret
Grillet, I realize I have some very big shoes to fill! During Margaret’s term as president, the club thrived and was
very active with a full calendar of events. I certainly do not want to lose the momentum that we have going for us
now. But we are already late in getting a general membership meeting organized for the February timeframe so
we have some catching up to do quickly! Based on the success of last year’s February meeting at the Sugartown
Carriage Museum which boasted attendance of almost 90 members/guests, I would like to host another general
meeting at this fine venue. We already have some good leads on potential speakers for the program. Looking
beyond February, the Board is very interested in knowing what kinds of activities the members want our club to
host. Please submit your ideas and feedback via email or phone call to any Board member or use the “Contact Us”
link on the website to send an email to our BVDC mailbox or Click here to send your thoughts!
One of my goals this year is to increase the number of members getting involved in either attending BVDC
activities and/or volunteering to help organize the activities. Hopefully you’ve read all about our new Volunteer
Incentive program (detailed in the December newsletter) which will provide rewards for volunteer hours. We
will identify the volunteer opportunities that are available by listing them in the newsletter and/or website. Also,
we’ve mapped out the geography of BVDC members (see page 12 in this issue) so that we can try to hold these
activities at venues that will be within close proximity to lots of members – as you can see from the map, we have
several different areas of member population density so we’ll try to offer activities in multiple locations to enable
more members to take advantage of the meetings, programs, clinics, etc.
Another of my goals is to get to know more of you personally. I’ve gotten to know some of you through my work
on the newsletter and I’ve really been impressed with the newsletter content that has been submitted by
members. I hope more of you will contribute to the newsletter in the future because this is the kind of stuff that
makes for interesting reading by our membership!
While this new job as president is somewhat daunting right now, I am very excited and honored to be given the
opportunity to lead such a great club. My one year as a director gave me a sampling of how rewarding it can be to
invest personal time and effort in the BVDC. I look forward to meeting and working with many of you over the
course of my term and beyond!

Review of Minutes: Margaret moved to accept the minutes from the September board meeting, Tim seconded; the
minutes were unanimously approved with the following amendment: The proceeds from the Holiday Party Live
Auction will be donated to the Fair Hill Trail Fund, not the Silent Auction proceeds.
Committee ReportsPleasure Show: The board discussed and implemented a set of guidelines for management of future Pleasure Driving
Shows. The Show Organizer will also serve as the chairperson for the Pleasure Show Committee. A Committee Report
must be submitted for every board meeting as well as a budget for board approval. Additional details will be printed in
the newsletter.
Newsletter and Website: The trial of sending the newsletter to members via e-mail even if they opt for a printed
version seems to be working. Back issues are now available on the website and information for accessing them will be
included with every notice of a new issue.
Ellen has been working on the problems with the website. There are some bugs in the program and updates are not
always implemented as they should be. The committee is investigating options to make things easier.
Programs: This committee needs a chairperson. The Board has a list of willing venues and speakers, but needs
someone to organize the programs.

purchase of 2 new section timers. Margaret moved to approve the request. Teresa seconded; unanimously approved.
The Board also unanimously approved the purchase of a corporate seal.
Membership: The Board has been testing the on-line Membership Directory. All seems to be working well. Members
will receive information needed to access it as they renew their membership. Great Job Bobbi!!

Newsletter and is awaiting the vote at the Holiday Party and Annual Meeting.
