Clinician: Anne Rawle
Join an enthusiastic group of fellow spectators for dressage at the Glen Willow CDE on Friday,
September 11th, as competition begins in the Advanced arena. Dressage Judge Anne Rawle will
share her thoughts and comments about each competitor’s performance. Seeing each presentation

how the judge awards points.
Anne Rawle of Watermark Farm in Oxford, PA is the clinician. She holds a USDF silver medal as a
rider, and has trained many horses from breaking to the international grand prix arena for herself
and with students. As a USEF "S" dressage judge, she has been officiating for over thirty years in
dressage, combined training as well as driving.

BVDC General Membership Meeting
Equine First Aid
by Liz Arbittier VMD CVA, Staff Veterinarian
of the New Bolton Equine Field Service team
Only about a dozen BVDC members took advantage of this excellent presentation by Dr.
Arbittier and I know they were not disappointed! It was well-organized, well delivered and
chock full of very useful first aid info. Her slides included many graphic examples of injuries
and how to evaluate and treat them while waiting for the vet to arrive. Here’s a sampling
of some of the info she gave us…
Check these things prior to calling the vet so you can provide this info on the call; it will
really help them be better prepared when they arrive:
 Heart rate, respiration, & temp
 Gum color - should be pink; pale is not bad, but dark red/purple is very bad (toxicity)
 Some gut sounds should be heard within 45 seconds in all 4 quadrants
 Digital pulse (front & rear are usually different) - use thumb & forefinger
 Manure & water consumption
 Location of any lacerations (esp. if on a joint) - kick wounds are almost always puncture
wounds (serious)
Eye injuries - compare pupil size of both eyes (constricted pupil more of a problem)

 Bleeding wounds at heel bulb or pastern can result in great loss of blood - wrap tightly


with vetwrap + tourniquet above wound (as tight as possible) prior to vet’s arrive
If you find an object embedded in the injury - do not remove! (esp in foot) so vet can
xray to see internal damage
Send cell phone photos of injuries (like lacerations) to your vet

Buxmont Riding Club
Pleasure Driving Shows in 2015
The Buxmont Riding Club is offering a new lineup of classes for their Pleasure Driving Shows
in 2015. Each full division will include Turnout, Working, Super Reinsmanship, Timed
Obstacles and a Derby class. Divisions include horses, ponies and VSEs driving in singles, and
Juniors, ages 11 to 18.
New this year the Timed Obstacles (cones) class will be held in the upper ring during the
morning. Competitors will be able to walk the course between rounds, then come as it is
convenient to drive it.
In the main ring Turnout, Working and Super Reinsmanship will run by division with the
Open Very Small Equines starting the day. There will be an opportunity to walk the Super
Reinsmanship test before the show starts. This year ADS Super Reinsmanship Test #1 will be
used and is available on the Buxmont website.
The Derby class will be set up during lunch break and be open for walking at that time. This
class will include some elements of Combined Driving competitions. Drivers and anyone else
on a vehicle will be required to wear helmets. While gloves and a whip are still required,
drivers will be able to dress more casually and leave their driving aprons at their trailers.
There will also be a division for therapeutic drivers of any age called C.O.O.L. (Conquering
Obstacles Overcoming Limitations). Their classes will include Turnout, Working and a regular
Reinsmanship class.

August 2015
DDC sponsored but open to non-members
A driving derby is a new style of competition, sometimes called carriage racing. It is a timed
course through two to four CDE type obstacles, and a series of cones. The obstacles have a set
of letters indicating the route through the obstacles, as the cones are numbered, and must be
taken in sequence. Sometimes there are “knock downs” in the obstacles. The winner is decided
not only by the time taken through the course, but also by penalty points for knocking down
balls from cones, knocking down cones, or dislodging the knock downs from the obstacles.
Classes will be as follows:
Walk only - This will not be timed, and is for training purposes only. A nominal fee will be
charged to help cover the cost of the participation ribbon or prize.
Walk/Trot - Class will be timed, and pr izes will be awar ded to 6 th place
Walk/Trot/Canter (or catch J ane Bailey if you can) - Again this will be timed, and prizes will
be awarded to 6th place
The walk-trot and walk trot canter classes will be divided into size groups (under 11.3 hands, 12
hands to 14>2, and then horse and draft) Size groups may be split, or combined depending on
entries.
