PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE FOR JUNE
May was a wonderfully busy and joyful month here at St. Mary School. Our basketball teams made a strong
showing and our girls intermediate team went to our board final! We had a wonderful school track and field
meet and wish all of our students the best as we look forward to the board meet on June 10th. This past
month our musical “High School Musical” was performed. It was just incredible, we have a truly amazing and
talented group of students and staff. Our Superintendent of Schools, Tim Moloney came to see it and told
everyone that it was the best production he had seen! We had a simply outstanding end to our fundraising by
making a profit of over $11,500!!! Staff members took their pies in the face in front of the whole school. It was
a lot of very sticky fun!
The month ahead is very busy with trips, our talent show and of course graduation. We are very proud of
our graduating class. We know they will go on to great success in their future academic, athletic and creative
experiences. Our theme this year for graduation is based a story of caring, our grade eight class demonstrated
this sense of caring over and over again. They will be greatly missed next year and are wished the very best as
they graduate and continue on their journey.
A huge thank you to our School Council, Mrs Brown and Mrs Nizio for their hard work on the fundraiser
and our Hot Lunch program. Due to your support and their awesome organizing skills we were able to feed a
lot of kids and pay for part of the year end excursions.
Our Fruit of the Spirit for this month is Modesty. “Modesty is the fruit that moderates our presentation to
others, it does not draw attention to oneself. It is being well kept, orderly, quiet and humble in speech.”(PVNC

Online Banking
Thank you to all of our families who are using our online banking system. This makes
work in the office much more efficient.
Moving forward to September, our Board is strongly encouraging the online
payment method. They are asking that all families really make the effort to
register for online payments and to refrain from paying in cash or cheque.
If you have not yet signed up for online banking, please visit the website
peterboroughcatholic.schoolcashonline.com and register. Online banking will
eliminate sending money to school with your child. When you visit this website you
will be able to purchase field trips, milk orders, hot lunch orders and anything that
you would need to send money to the school for. It is very easy and very efficient.
Thanking you in advance for your support.
Parents who continue to send in cash/cheques to purchase items, will need to adhere
to the following:

ORDER DEADLINE: Orders must be received on or before the order deadline. Money sent in after the deadline has passed will be returned.

ONE PAYMENT PER STUDENT: We can only accept one payment per student. Please do not combine orders for two or more students on one cheque or in
one
envelope of cash. For example, if you have 2 children and they each order
pizza that comes to $12.00 each, you cannot send both orders with $24.00 enclosed. The 2 students must each return an order form with $12.00 enclosed.

EXACT CHANGE: Please send exactly what is owed. If you are ordering milk
for $14.25 please send $14.25. Any extra $ received will go towards the breakfast program.

MILK ORDERS: When ordering milk must order the same kind for the full
week. Milk can be switched up each week but the same kind of milk must be ordered for the full week.

Thank you for your co-operation.

St Mary would like to thank various people for donating
items and time to make our school a better place. Ames

Terri Ames herself who is always there to help us. The

supporting our sacraments, paying for skating and volunteering their time. Also a huge thank you to Mrs Brown
for pizza days, setting up for special events, volunteering–
she seems to spend as much time at school as she did
when she was on staff. Also thank you to DART for

OUR SCHOOL COUNCIL ROCKS!!!!! St. Mary staff and students would like to say a huge
thank you to our Catholic School Council. We have a great team of parents who help in
many different ways. We started the year off with our dance-a-thon; a great time, and we
raised some money that was used to purchase junior books. Then of course we had our
movie night, a fun, free family night that also provided food donations for our local food
bank. We all LOVED our Christmas lunch, it was delicious!!! The students really enjoy
their hot lunch Mondays and subs Wednesday thanks to our ‘hot dog” & “subs” teams. Finally, the parent council took care of our annual fundraiser. Our School Council is ALWAYS supportive of our staff, students and our initiatives….
THANK YOU TO ALL OF THOSE PARENTS ON COUNCIL THIS YEAR!

Mental Health Moment
Summer is fast approaching and kids’ excitement is mounting as they look forward to the
holidays. Caregivers know all too well that this initial excitement over the freedom from the
day to day routine can quickly give way to the much dreaded statement, “I’m bored.” Dr.
Stuart Shanker suggests that this complaint is often the result of kids getting stuck in a state
of hyperarousal, often times fuelled artificially by binging on Netflicks or videogames. Prolonged screen time leaves a child’s nervous system flooded in adrenaline and in a state of
high alert. The resulting feelings are those of restlessness and irritation, a feeling described
as boredom. We can help kids to stay regulated through the summer months by limiting the
daily dose of screen time and encouraging them to engage in other activities which help
them to feel calm and regulated such as playing with friends, getting physically active, and
spending time in nature. Good nutrition, sleep habits, and daily physical activity are also part
of helping a child to feel regulated. So the next time you hear, “I’m bored”, take that as a
sign that your child needs some help to get back to a state of being calmly focused and alert!

JUNE 2015
Good News from the PVNCCDSB Office of Faith Development
In the month of June, the Liturgical Season of the Church is most always Ordinary Time and the Liturgical Colour
is green. Every school in the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School
Board will be learning, praying and talking about the Fruit of the Holy Spirit called Modesty. Modesty is the fruit
that moderates our presentation to others. Modesty is being well kept, orderly, and humble in speech, behavior
and dress and is grounded in humility. In our homes, parishes and schools, let us teach our students to appreciate that their bodies are temples of God so that they will act with modesty and show respect for themselves and
others.

June, 2015 – End of Year Transportation Memorandum from STSCO
Dear Students, Parents and Guardians:
The school year will soon draw to a close and, in looking ahead to next year I would like to provide you with the following information on behalf of your School Board and Student Transportation Services (STSCO).
Accessing Student Busing Information – For the coming school year, families can access busing information
via STSCO’s website (www.stsco.ca). After July 18, you will be able to log-in to the website, scroll down to the
“Transportation Bus Lookup” link, click on it and check transportation information for children in your family. For
security purposes, it will be necessary for you to have their OEN number (found on top right corner of their
School Report Card). Busing information will then be displayed on the screen. On the website, you can also learn
about bus safety, STSCO and student transportation.
Bus Safety and Emergency Evacuation Training – Periodically, during each school year,
bus companies will visit schools to offer training sessions aimed at teaching students bus
safety rules and what to do in case of an emergency. The program helps to keep safety in
the forefront for students.
Bus Route Changes Over Course of Summer – Each year, STSCO staff plan bus routing
for over 26,000 students attending 130 area schools. In order to meet the needs of all
transport eligible students and to provide for effective and efficient transportation service,
many route changes are made from year to year. Therefore, students and families are advised that their current bus route and stop could change before September as routes are
planned for next year. For this reason it is very important that, leading up to September, you
check busing information on our website at www.stsco.ca periodically so that you are aware
of any changes which may have occurred.
Student Movement and School Change – For students who may be moving over the
course of the summer or who may be changing schools starting in September, 2015, please
ensure the school your child will be attending in September has the most up to date information for your child prior to the end of June, 2015. This will ensure STSCO has the changes prior to posting 2015/16 Transportation Information on our website, www.stsco.ca, on July 18. If the address change results in the student being within walking distance of the school
of attendance, then bus information will correspondingly indicate they are ineligible and are
deemed to be a walker to school as a result.
If you have any questions concerning any of the above information, please call the STSCO office at (705) 748-5500 or
toll free at 1-800-757-0307 and speak with the appropriate staff for your area. (ext. 231 for Clarington, ext. 232 for
Northumberland, ext. 242 for Peterborough, ext. 260 for Out of Bounds/Day Care arrangements for all areas, or ext.
241 for transportation of students with special needs for all areas)
All of us at the School Board and STSCO wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable summer and we look forward
to serving you in the fall.
