STATE BUILDING COMMUNITIES FUND
RECOMMENDS $2.25M FOR
NEW WATERFRONT CENTER
We recently received a letter of congratulations
from the State’s Building Communities Fund for
a $2.25M (the amount we requested) grant to
become part of the Governor’s 2017-19 Capital
Budget. The letter was dated September 28th,
which happens to be my birthday. It was the best
of birthday presents. The letter states it is not a
guarantee of funding as it still needs to go through
the legislative process, but it is a very good sign.
Over the last decade all of the grants that have
gone through this rigorous competitive process administered by the Department of Commerce have had a high degree of priority in the State’s capital
budget. This grant is in addition to the direct appropriation of $1.25M in the
2015-17 biennium, for which Senator Maralyn Chase was our champion. We
have three other grant applications being considered and should know about
all of these before Christmas. The successful State application makes all of
the other grants more likely as the concern of every funder is whether we can
raise the whole amount necessary to build the new Center. Thus, the more we
raise, the easier it is to raise the remainder.
PARKING PROJECT WITH EDMONDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE
PROJECT MANAGEMENT STUDENTS
This fall two classes from the Project Management Program at Edmonds
Community College will be working with the Senior Center to produce a
report and recommendations for ways to ease our parking issues, both in
the present and future when the new Center is completed. We started with
the idea of a ride share program, which is something we can control but the
project has expanded in its approach. The students will be interacting with
seniors and staff, both in the building and in the parking lot. Please be sure to
welcome them and let them know about the parking issues you face and any
suggestions you have for improving the situation. Two years ago the EdCC
project management students did five studies that we have made good use of.
GREAT TIME TO TRY THE BASTYR NATUROPATHIC CLINIC
– SHORT WAITING LIST
This is a great time to try out our Bastyr Naturopathic Clinic as its waiting
lists are quite short and they are accepting new patients. The Clinic operates
all day on Wednesdays with morning and afternoon sections. Your first appointment will take 1.5 hours, as an extensive medical history is taken. Much
of the time is with senior naturopathic students. For the students, this is their
internship. During every visit the faculty supervisor, a registered naturopathic
physician, will examine and speak with you. If any supplements or vitamins
are prescribed, these are available at no cost from the small dispensary that
Bastyr maintains here. Because Bastyr uses only the highest quality products,
the savings can be significant. Medicare does not cover naturopathic medicine, so the fact that the services are available for such a minimal charge is important. The $15 admin fee is just that, it covers our administrative expenses.
It can be waived if the cost would prevent anyone from using the service. At
this point in our relationship with Bastyr University, they are not charging
us for the service as it is a great site for their senior students to gain practice
experience. One more note – the Clinic is open to anyone, regardless of age.
Our youngest patient to date has been five years old.
2017 MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL – WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Enclosed with this bulletin is a 2017 membership form. I hope all of you
renew your membership and encourage others to become members. 2017
is an important year for the Center and we need your support. Our capital
campaign for the Edmonds Waterfront Center on this magnificent site enters
a crucial phase. At this point it is looking quite positive. In addition to the
campaign, we will continue to offer a first rate program of activities and services which we are always looking to improve. The Senior Center, a 501(c)3
non-profit organization, is responsible for raising 80% of its $650,000 budget.
Membership dues (nearly $42,000 in 2016 – our best ever) are part of how we
do this. The benefits of membership include the bi-monthly bulletin mailed
to you, discounts on trips, events and classes, and a coupon for a free Community Breakfast. Both my wife and I are renewing our memberships – I
hope you will too. If every member brought in just one new member, our
membership would double. The impact on the Center would be profound. I
promise to do so – I hope you will too.

A message from AARP Washington and the Washington State Attorney General’s Office
The Grandparent Scam
You get a frantic call from someone claiming to be your grandson or granddaughter. The caller says there’s an emergency and asks you to
send money right away. But there’s a good chance this is an imposter trying to steal your money through the “grandparent scam.”
How it Works:
Scammers usually claim to be in a “help me” situation, such as being stuck with a broken down car or needing money to get somewhere.
The caller may pose as your grandchild, or a law enforcement officer or attorney calling on your grandchild’s behalf; whatever it takes to
sound convincing.
What You Should Know:
•
These scams often happen in the middle of the night, to catch you while you’re not fully awake, making it easier to get you in a
high state of emotion and more susceptible. It’s what con artists refer to as getting victims “under the ether.”
•
The caller may have personal information such as family member’s names that they could have picked up on social media sites.
•
The caller will likely ask that you send the money by wire transfer – the favorite method of con artists.
What You Should Do:
•
Try to reach the person the caller is claiming to be directly. If you can’t reach him or her, contact a friend or family member to try
and validate the emergency.
•
Ask some questions that would be hard for an imposter to answer, like a pet’s name or a mother’s birthday.
•
Don’t send money unless you’re sure the situation is real.
If you or someone you know has been a victim of identity theft or fraud, you can contact the AARP Foundation Fraud Fighter
Center at 1-800-646-2283 for help. You can also file a consumer complaint with the Washington State Attorney General’s Office.

Washington State Legislature and the offices of the Governor, Lt Governor, Secretary
of State, and State Treasurer. Completed in
1928, the building has the tallest free standing masonry dome in North America and
houses the world’s largest Tiffany chandelier. We’ll also tour the 18,000 square foot
Governor’s Mansion all decked out for the
holidays. The Georgian-style mansion was
built in 1908 and is furnished with antiques.
The mansion is both a private home for the
governor and his/her family and the site of
official functions. We’ll grab a bite to eat at a

operates a job placement and training
program benefiting homeless and
disadvantaged men, women, and youth.
FareStart was started as a business that
delivered meals to homeless shelters,
whose founder, David Lee, later trained
their clients to help prepare the food,
which gave them the job skills they would
need to find employment and stable
housing.

What’s So Important About Edmonds Marsh?

Edmonds Marsh, as we see it today, is a 28 acre remnant of
what was once a 100 acre salt marsh estuary that stretched
from Brackett’s Landing south to Marina Beach Park. Marshes
like this used to be very common, but as we look up and down
our Puget Sound shoreline we see most of them have been
completely lost over time. Edmonds Marsh is now the largest
salt-water marsh between Everett and Tacoma- a very rare gem
indeed! Keeley O’Connell has been working with the City for
six years to reconnect the Marsh to Puget Sound with a creek
that will allow salmon back into the system. Restoring the
marsh will support salmon recovery in our State, and also has
a huge positive impact on our community. Keeley will lead a
discussion about how marsh restoration improves community
health, safety and well-being, all while bringing a valuable user
group back to Edmonds- our native salmon.


their physicians is chronic cough. Causes of cough can range
from the benign to more serious but regardless of the cause,
the impact on a patient’s quality of life can be significant. A
thorough medical history and physical exam can sometimes
give clues to the diagnosis, but in many cases additional
evaluation is necessary. Allergy, Asthma and Immunology
specialists are uniquely trained in the evaluation and treatment
of chronic cough due to a variety of causes.

of concerns may include, but are not limited to: diabetic education, physical activity,
weight management, mental stimulation, nutrition, medication management, fall
prevention or depression/anxiety. You will receive a personalized health action plan
that identifies your health risks and the steps to take to improve your over-all wellbeing. Over the course of the program the social worker or nurse monitor and help
provide motivation to reach your goals. If you want to make positive changes in your
life, have been diagnosed with a chronic condition or want to be more physically

lunch on Thursdays.
WHAT’S STAYING THE SAME?
Time: Lunch will continue to be
served from 11:25am-12:25pm.
Place: Lunch will continue to
be served in the Senior Center
dining room.
No RSVP: We will still ask that
you sign in with our lunch ticket
taker, however, we will not
require anyone to make a lunch
reservation ahead of time.
WHAT’S GOING TO BE
DIFFERENT?
Cost: The cost to pay for a lunch
on Thursday will be $4.00
Age requirement: There will be
no age requirement to have a
lunch on Thursday, everyone
pays $4.00. You don’t need to be
a member or be over age 60 to
have the lunch.
Menu: We will be coming up
with some new lunch entrees. If

Community Transit
An adult ORCA card (person under
65) can be purchased at the ferry, train
station, or transit hub but in order for
a Senior or a person with a disability to
get a Reduced Fare Permit card to ride
1/2 price, they should go in person to
either the Lynnwood Transit Center
customer service store or the Everett
Transit customer service office. The
reason being they need to show ID to
verify that they are 65+. Call for more

The Edmonds Senior Center thrift store is in need
of your donations! After our recent remodel, the
store now has an additional 500 square feet of
space, new flooring and fresh paint. Come find
some treasures down by the beach. As a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation, your donations to
the thrift store are tax deductible. The store is
located at 220 Railroad Ave, just south of the
ferry dock. We’re open Monday through Friday
from 10:00am–3:30pm and Saturdays from
11:00am-4:00pm.
