Fearne Cotton, TV presenter WALLABY At school I often thought, ‘I’m wasting my time here’. Then Mr Iggulden walked into our English class. He was tall and very likeable. I thought he was fantastic, though not everyone agreed. But he taught us in such an interesting way – unlike any of my previous English teachers. Rather than just reading books, he’d get us to act the stories. In one lesson, we watched a video of Lord of the Flies. Then he gave everyone a character from the book and the whole class read the book aloud. I thought it was much more fun than reading alone. Another time, he came in, said something that we didn’t agree with, and we all started discussing it. Then he said, ‘Right, you’ve all got top marks in your oral examination’. I wasn’t very good at English until Mr Iggulden became my teacher. I used to get low grades, but as soon as I started his classes my grades improved. Sometimes we argued. He usually said I talked too much, but I think he liked my energy and interest. I’d never read poetry before, but with Mr Iggulden, I read loads. He encouraged us to write poems too. I still write them and one day I’d like to publish my own collection. I’d always wanted to work in TV, but Mr Iggulden insisted I stayed at school where I could get some qualifications. He said there was only a one-in-a-million chance that I’d achieve my dream. I never wanted to go to university and when, at 15, I got my first television job presenting a children’s programme, he said, ‘Well done’. When the time came to leave school, I was upset about leaving his lessons but I was also looking forward to my future life. 36 What is Fearne Cotton’s purpose in writing this text? A to persuade more people to choose a teaching career B to explain why she always tried to do well at school C to describe how she was influenced by one of her teachers D to compare her attitude to school with that of other students Kangourou della Lingua Inglese 2014 pagina 31 WALLABY 37 What do we learn about Mr Iggulden from the text? A He expected his students to learn quickly. B He thought watching films was better than reading. C He was popular with students throughout the school. D His lessons were different from those of other teachers. 38 What does Fearne say about poetry? A She wants to see her own poems in print. B She no longer has enough time to write poems. C She disliked the poems she read before Mr Iggulden arrived. D She has collected the poems she read with Mr Iggulden. 39 Why did Mr Iggulden recommend that Fearne should stay at school? A so that she could go on to university B because she might not get a job in TV C because her grades were not high enough D in order to get a better-paid job 40 A Which diary entry would be Fearne’s? 8 January New English teacher today. The same old boring lessons, I’m afraid. Nothing ever B 8 January We all read ‘Lord of the Flies’ quietly on our own. I much prefer working alone. Brilliant! D 8 January We saw a film of ‘Lord of the Flies’ and then turned it into a drama. Really exciting! changes! C 8 January Our teacher read some poems to us today. They were interesting but he wouldn’t let us discuss them. pagina 32 Kangourou della Lingua Inglese 2014 Part 8 5 questions Read the text. For each space, choose the correct answer.
