What is Lent? Lent is a season of the church year that lasts for 40 days (not counting Sundays) recalling Jesus’ 40-day fast in the wilderness. As Lutherans, 2015 Annual Reports Copies of the 2015 Annual Report are available in the Welcome Center and online at www.oursaviorsmoorhead.org/ resources. the time is full of prayer, service, and self-examination. Some choose to live more simply or follow some other spiritual discipline throughout the season. The season begins with Ash Wednesday, a day when we confess our sins and are marked on the forehead with a cross of dust and the words, “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Lenten Wednesday Meals at 5:30 p.m. During Lent we will have a Lenten meal prior to the 6:30 p.m. service on Wednesday nights. Different church groups have volunteered to prepare the meals. Ash Wednesday, February 10, the meal is meatballs, mashed potatoes, and green beans, served by the Altar Guild. Wonder, Awe, and Astonishment “Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder.” Isaiah 29:14 We live in a world of words and information. I don’t know about you, but I consume many words. I try to digest and make sense of all the messages that come my way. Reflecting on this past year, I remember reading words that turned out to be refreshing and sustaining. These words spoke of wonder, awe, and astonishment in the Christian life. “Wonder is a necessary disposition of the soul for this time because it promotes an awareness of transcendence that trumps every human effort to demystify life. Ordinary awe is an invitation to a dance of images and ideas, of wonder and reason through which, in every day experience, we glimpse traces of majesty and wonder of God hidden in the ordinary.” – Herbert Anderson “A fundamental element of Pentecost is astonishment. Our God is a God of astonishment. This we know. If the church is alive she must always surprise. It is incumbent on the living Church to astound.” – Pope Francis Recently I marveled at God’s presence in ordinary moments. A young couple in our congregation came forward to communion with a sweet, one week old newborn. I marveled at the new life and their young family. That same day I watched a three-year-old run full sprint down the aisle to receive a blessing at Holy Communion. Awe, wonder, and astonishment right in front of me. Each week at worship services I watch kids playfully come forward to place their offering in the world globe in the front of the church. A few of them were carried up as little ones, and now they are walking forward, gifts in hand. Some actually dance! They are so comfortable in their church home that they are free, before God and everyone else, to dance in the chancel. Awe, wonder, and astonishment right in front of me. While leading an adult education group, I notice the thoughtful sharing. Members in the group all bring a lifetime of reading scripture and making sense of faith in a complex world. Open, progressive, and eager to grow, they keep discovering where faith leads. Awe, wonder, and astonishment right in front of me. The Christian Life is quite a journey. The congregation that I speak of in the illustrations above is your church. Watch for the surprising presence of God hidden in the ordinary. Lent is a time to see the gift of God in our midst. Join the journey towards Easter! Palm Sunday Brunch Faith Family Sunday The Youth and Family Discipleship Committee is excited about the success of Faith Family Sundays that began last fall! Five times throughout the Sunday School year, families are invited to gather in the Fellowship Hall (instead of Sunday School classrooms) to create projects together. The fourth Faith Family Sunday will be on February 14. Families will gather together in the Fellowship Hall to make many different kinds of heart projects. These projects will make wonderful gifts for grandparents, neighbors, teachers, and friends. Parents and older/younger siblings are all invited to attend. The OSLC Youth will be serving the Palm Sunday Brunch on Sunday, March 20. The Youth are looking for adult volunteers willing to help out. If you are interested and available to help, please contact Melissa at yfd@oursaviorsmoorhead.org or at 2332412. 5th Grade Retreat All Our Savior’s 5th graders are invited to participate in the Holy Communion Retreat, held on Sunday, March 13 from 11:30 a.m.—2:30 p.m. Parents are encouraged to attend with their child. First communion will be on Maundy Thursday, March 24, at the 6:30 p.m. worship service. Pick up an envelope in the back of the Sanctuary beginning that evening for any dollar amount between $1 and $200. Register your envelope with the youth sitting at the table. Bring your envelope home and pray for the youth of Our Savior’s as they are planning their summer mission trips. Bring the envelope, filled with the dollar amount listed on the front (or more!), back to Our Savior’s before March 30 (return to the youth at the table or to the church office). The OSLC Youth appreciate all the love and support they have received from our congregation family and friends, and are looking forward to another fantastic summer! The Our Savior’s Youth will be collecting loose change (and paper money) and canned items for the “Soup”er Bowl of Caring again this year. On Sunday, February 7, bring along a canned or boxed item and all your loose change and help Our Savior’s beat hunger! All collections will go to the local food pantry. Rapid City, SD Mission Trip– June 12-18 Minneapolis, MN Mission Trip– July 31-August 1 One Sunday, in a Midwest city, a young child was "acting up" during the morning worship hour. The parents did their best to maintain some sense of order in the pew but were losing the battle. Finally, the father picked the little fellow up and walked sternly up the aisle on his way out. Just before reaching the safety of the narthex, the little one called loudly to the congregation, "Pray for me! Pray for me!" Lenten Journey “I Thirst” Water surrounds us in our natural world, in oceans, in rivers, and lakes. Water marks our natural lives from our mother’s wombs, and water marks our sacramental lives in God as we die and rise with Christ at baptism, and in our life in Christ. We continue this sacred journey until our baptisms become complete in death. Water is part of our lives. We connect with its ancient meanings and promise in scripture. In Lent, as we make our way to Holy Week and Easter, we realize we have a growing thirst for God. By the time we are swept up into the fullness of Holy Week, we understand more deeply that Jesus thirsts for water on the cross. It is a physical thirst, but more profoundly, it is a thirst for what God is doing in the cross, in the tomb, and in the resurrection. Join the journey on Wednesdays as we worship at 2:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., beginning with Ash Wednesday, February 10. Our weekly themes will guide us to Holy Week: Water Marks God’s Creation Water Marks Israel’s Story and Our Story Water Marks the Prophetic Word Water Marks our Life of Prayer Water Marks the Life of Christ Water Marks the Followers of Christ If you desire a daily devotional for your own use, please contact the church office to order or reserve a Water Marks book by Thursday, February 4.
