Some classes require a minimum number of participants registered to be held. These
such classes are canceled if the “minimums” are not met. Therefore if you sign-up for a
class please plan on participating. If you need to cancel your registration please notify
the parks and recreation staff as soon as possible before the first day of the class.
The Parks and Recreation Department will start taking online registrations on
Monday, September 9.
The City of Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department does not discriminate against
any person on the basis of gender in the operation, conduct, or administration of
community athletic programs or sports facilities. Any citizen who feels she or he has
been the victim of discriminatory treatment in violation of this policy should report
this concern to the Parks and Recreation Director, Gary Robinson, at 293-1918.
Please Note:
APRD does not have medical insurance coverage for program participants and is not responsible for injuries that may occur as a
result of participation in City sponsored recreational activities.
Please be aware that in order to register for classes payment will be required “up front.” REGISTRATION WILL
ALSO TAKE PLACE BY GOING TO THE PARKS AND RECREATION PAGE: www.cityofanacortes.org/Parks/
programs.htm. Participants may still register over the phone. This can be done by giving a debit/credit card number.

Basketball season is just around the corner. We
are now taking registrations for our recreational
girls basketball league. This noncompetitive and
instructional league is offered to girls who are
in grades 1st - 6th and who want to learn new
and improve existing skills. Good sportsmanship
and equal participation are emphasized in this
program.
To maximize fun and skill development, rules
will be modified for 1st - 4th grade divisions.
Practices are typically held during the weekdays
and most games will be played on Saturdays
starting in November. Practices and games for
the 5th/6th grade teams may be established
based on how many girls sign up in this age
group. They may play in the SWISH League if
there is only enough girls for one team. Teams
are formed by the parks and recreation staff.
Volunteer coaches are needed. Registrations
are currently being accepted online at: www.

The Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) program covers
child safety and basic care techniques for infants and children.
CABS stresses the priority to keep the babysitter and the
children you care for safe. Some of the topics covered in the
program: before parents leave, play-time, telephone calls/
stranger knocks, hand washing, meal times, bedtime, and
providing emergency care (first aid/CPR). Sheila Davis is a
Certified First Aid/CPR instructor with the American Safety
& Health Institute, more information available at www.beesafe.com. Bring a sack lunch and a drink with you to class. A

for 90 minutes for 10 weeks. Exact location and times
in Anacortes will be determined once the coaching

YOUR DOGS, YOUR RULES
Complaints from park users, and most
interestingly, other dog owners, regarding off
leash activities of dogs and their owners are
on the rise here at the Park. Please remember,
your dog needs to be on leash at all times
here at the Park, and everywhere else in
Anacortes (excepting our two dog parks,
of course). It does not matter the size, the
friendliness, or any other traits your dog has.
Leash the animal. Simple.

FEEDING THE ANIMALS
Another reminder to please stop feeding the animals here at the Park. They don’t need your help, and
it simply habituates them away from their native wild. The expectation in the eyes of the deer, squirrel
and birds out here is starting to really mess with the minds of our human visitors.
FINALLY, THANK YOU
Washington Park would not be here with almost 100 years of community support. On behalf of all of
us who have previously worked here, currently do so, and in the future will, thank you ever so much.
Managing this park is a gift I am thankful for every day. All the best to you and yours, and remember to
come out and visit your Park.

Anacortes Arts Commission projects
continue…..
Poetry is the topic of recent art installations at Cap Sante
Marina and Washington Park. Poetry by regional writers Jean
Hollingstad, Gary Keister, Sam Green, Bob Rose, Thelma
Palmer, Nancy Pagh, Robert Sund and Stephen Roxborough
was selected last fall as part of the Word Waves community
poetry project.
Anacortes artist Daniel Paris created a beautiful wooden
sculptural piece around Hollingstad’s poem. Carved from hard
wood, intricately carved sea birds and shoreline detail wrap
around the engraved poem. It is hung on the south wall of the
Harbor Master’s building.
Gary Keister’s poem is an excerpt from a larger poem about
Anacortes, “Sebastian-Stuart Fish Company”. It was hand
painted by an up and coming Anacortes artist, Paige Rosson,
on a plate attached to a repurposed metal bow thruster donated
by Dakota Creek. The installation, near the main boat ramp,
references working aspects of the Marina.
Washington Park will soon be installing engraved poetry
on wood in several locations. The remaining pieces are on
traditional signage at the two locations within the park.
Children were able to get involved in making their own art
recently at the Arts Festival at a booth sponsored by the Arts
Commission. Hundred of kids were able to create a marbled
piece of fabric with the assistance of artist Marius Hibbard. The
Commission would like to thank Marius for making this happen
again this year and also a hearty thank you to the volunteers
who helped at the booth.
Donations are still being sought from the community to help
with the placement of the sculpture “Aerie” by artist Merrilee
Moore, to be placed in the roundabout on Commercial Avenue.
If you would like to contribute, please call the Anacortes Parks
and Recreation Department at 360-293-1918. To those who
have already donated, we thank you.
The Arts Commission has had great success with the monthly
art shows at The Depot, located at 611 R Avenue. The shows
coincide with the monthly artwalks (6-9 pm on the first Friday)
and then continue onto the following Saturday (10-3 pm).
Thank you to Karla Locke for the coordinating and placement
of the art installations. These shows are always free and the
public is always welcome.
If you would like to become involved with an Arts Commission
project, please call us at 360-293-1918.
