The Golden Bears are coming off a 5-3 season a year ago and an 11th place finish at the PSAC Championships. Kutztown will have to overcome the graduation of five seniors, including four PSAC qualifiers. Kutztown has one senior and seven juniors on the team this season. The squad primarily consists of sophomores and freshmen, as seven sophomores return and five freshmen will compete for the first time. Head coach Tim Flannery, the winningest coach in program history, enters his 20th season at the helm of the Golden Bears swimming team. He has a 12590 career record at KU and 158 school records have been set with Flannery as the head coach (men and women combined). “I’m encouraged by the depth on the team this season,” Flannery said. “We will have to learn on the fly due to the inexperience on the squad, but the team has looked solid through all the strokes in practice. One of the question marks is in the sprints, but we have multiple swimmers who will have the chance to step up for us in those events. “Our success this season will be dependent upon what type of big meet attitudes the team brings,” Flannery stated. “We should be ready to go for dual meets, but most of the team will be new to championship competition. I’m expecting to have at least the same amount and possibly even more PSAC qualifiers than last season.” Sprint/Middle Freestyle The freestyle group is the largest for Kutztown on the team. It will be the main event for eight swimmers and the secondary event for two others. Flannery thinks the group will have its challenges in the middle distance and sprints, but can improve as the season progresses. Juniors Vicky Ceasar and Olivia Kieley, along with sophomore Rachael Pietropolo will all swim the 50free up to the 200-free. Sophomores Gab Louden and transfer Alexis Cable are solid in the 50-free and 100-free. Freshman Katerina Parowski is expected to be one of the top middle distance freestylers on the team. Distance Freestyle Junior Katherine Triggs returns as the top distance freestyler for Kutztown. This is her second straight year competing for KU after taking two years off following her high school career. Triggs competed in four events in the 2015 PSAC Championships. She finished 20th in the 1650-free, 29th in the 1000free, 39th in the 500-free and 67th in the 200-free. Fellow junior Aimee Watkins is right on the cusp of qualifying for PSACs in the distance events. Flannery thinks she has a good chance to improve on her times from last year and record PSAC-qualifying times. Heather Wentz, a transfer from Harrisburg Area Community College, has been swimming really great in the preseason and will compete in the distance freestyle events for the Golden Bears. Back Sam Scialpi is the lone senior on the team. She competed in three events at the PSAC Championships last season. She finished 37th in the 200-back, placed 41st in the 100-back and was 67th in the 50-free. She will look to guide a young group of Golden Bears to success in her final season. Sophomore Madi Bleiler is the top returner in the backstroke for Kutztown. She placed 15th in the 100back and 27th in the 200-back, along with a career best time of 26.23 at the 50-free in the PSAC Championships. Flannery believes Bleiler has the ability to be one of the top swimmers in the backstroke in the PSAC. 2015-16 KUTZTOWN UNIVERSIT Y WOMEN’S SWIMMING | 11 2015-16 Season Preview Junior Caitlyn Falguera and freshman Linnea Pierson will also compete in the backstroke this season for the Golden Bears. Fly Sophomore Kara Jones will lead a young group of Golden Bears in the fly this season. She is expected to be a team leader and improve upon her results in the PSAC Championships from a season ago. She has been progressing well and is training hard in preparation for a big year. Jones competed in four events in the 2015 PSAC Championships and posted season-best times in all of them. She placed 20th in the 200-fly, 32nd in the 100-fly, 62nd in the 100-free and 64th in the 50-free. Freshman Brigid Grant has been working extremely hard in practice and Flannery is excited to see how she does this season. He believes that Grant will be able to post a lot of best times and have success in multiple events. Fellow freshman Pierson joins Kutztown this season as primarily a fly specialist. She should be able to add depth to the group and looks to have success in her first season. Breast Flannery expects the team to be solid in the breaststroke this season. Sophomore Bridget Perdoch is the top returner in the event for KU after coming on strong at the end of last season. She’s coming off shoulder surgery, but has been swimming well in practice and is expected to be a leader for Kutztown. Junior Meredith Heydt, a transfer from Lehigh Carbon Community College, will be in the fold for KU this season and adds experience to the squad. She will compete in the breast and freestyle. Sophomore Suzanne Selman also competes in the breaststroke for Kutztown. Redshirt freshman Stephanie Dean adds depth to the roster in the breaststroke and looks to have a good season following her redshirt from a season ago. Individual Medley Freshman Claire Frank will be focusing on the individual medley this season for KU. She is capable of swimming a number of different events and is the most versatile swimmer on the team. She should be able to give Kutztown points in multiple events and has the potential to qualify for PSACs. Selman also will compete in the IM along with Frank and is expected to have success in the event. Overall Kutztown is one of six women’s-only programs in the PSAC along with Mansfield, Lock Haven, California (PA), East Stroudsburg and Millersville. It faces all of these women’s teams, except Mansfield, in dualmeet action this season. Flannery always hopes to be one of the top women-only squads in the conference. KU kicks off its season on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. against East Stroudsburg and Misericordia at home in the Keystone Pool. It is the first of five home meets for the KU this season. She had two top-20 finishes at the PSAC Championships last season. She placed 19th in the 200-breast and 20th in the 100-breast. She also competed in the 50-free and placed 71st. 12 | 2015-16 KUTZTOWN UNIVERSIT Y WOMEN’S SWIMMING 2015-16 Golden Bears - Returners SAM SCIALPI Senior Back West Pittston, Pa. / Pittston Area Major: Elementary Education Career Honors 2015 PSAC Qualifier (100-back) Dean’s List Honors (Spring 2014) PSAC Championship Performances 2015 – 200-back (37th), 100-back (41st), 50-free (67th) 2014-15: Had a season-best time of 2:21.12 in the 200-back at the Franklin and Marshall Invite (11/23)...Posted a season-best time of 26.32 in the 50-free and a season-best in the 100-back with a time of 1:03.49 at the Franklin & Marshall Invite (11/22). 2013-14: Finished in fourth place in the 200-back with a careerbest time of 2:21.17 at the ESU Invitational (2/1)...Won the 100-back with a time of 1:03.15 in a win over Millersville.
