Thanks to the generosity of our ESSS members, we raised
about $400 for El Segundo's CASE(Food Bank) with the
silent auction sale of our library items and regular raffle.
Big thanks goes to Merilyn Burnside and her committee
and Brandi Dailey for making this such a success. I know
MANY of you were able to receive some great books at
super reasonable prices.
Chinda Wongngamnit and Karen McCleary conducted 2
informative classes on the Basics of I-Cord and Applied
uses of I-Cord. Such a "simple" technique that offers so
many different applications. Thank you for the program
and Chinda, I hope you are feeling better by now.
It's that time of year again, nominations for your 2014
ESSS Executive Board Members. Please contact Ann
Wicker or Renee Hoffman if you would like to run for a
position or nominate someone.
ESSS members would like say a BIG THANK YOU to
member Blair Seibert for donating so many items for our
meeting raffle. Brandi says that each month she will be
bringing items from her.
Blair, we miss your smiling face, hope all is well.
I REALLY appreciate(and so do the animals).
I would like to offer a personal thank you to those of you
who expressed an interest in making chemo hats for Halos
of Hope. Please contact me or Jennifer Moraca (half of the
Knotty Girls team) as the more we make the more Team
KnottyGirls will be the winner. Please make sure your hats
are SUPER soft, machine washable and dryable, and they
can be for children, women and men.
We will collect each month at the meeting until Feb.15.
Then these will be given to Halos of Hope at Stitches
West. We want to WIN by beating out the other
podcaster teams.
If you want to participate in the Redondo Craft show on
Nov. 24, please contact Kyrstal Smith or Kathy
Bartholomew for more info. Price point is 0 - $25 (of
course, could be more if you want). The entire proceeds
will be yours as the guild will pay the table fee.

together, Oct. 13, 12:30-3:30 at the Joslyn Center. Feel
free to bring a friend, a snack and your knitting/crochet
projects.

a weekend workshop with Myra Wood in June and our
traditional Joyce Wyatt program in November…… There are
several months left to fill with programs. If you would like to
share your interests or talents with the guild and present one

Knitting From Across the Sea

Wow how fast is this year going by
I have been busy working this month finishing off one of my
main projects but before it got too cold I changed my main
knitting project back to the fair isle sweater I started before
the summer so I could get it finished, it’s made with 7
different shades of Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift 2ply
2014 Nominations

Nominations for our Board of Directors are due to the
Nominating Committee by November 2. The following form
provides the job description for each position. Please
participate in this process by nominating someone or
yourself if you are interested in serving on the Board. All
nominees will be contacted prior to the November meeting
to make sure they want to be on the ballot.
Voting by secret ballot will take place at our November
meeting and the results will be announced at the December
meeting.
You can give the nomination form to Renee at the October
meeting or you can email your nominations to Ann Wicker at
wicker123@ca.rr.com or Renee Hoffman at vjkaty@aol.com.
Mum and Dad also came back from Ireland with a surprise
for me, they spoke to a friend of my sisters and had some
yarn bowls made for me. They are the first made by
Dunbeacon Pottery and apparently the pictures on
facebook have been bringing in more orders.
Now I have to get my projects back in line, I have been
suffering from startitus this week, so have about 6 WIPS.

Ana Petrova and I just got back from a “Baltic Knitting Cruise”
on the Ms Eurodam, a luxurious Holland-American ship. It was
organized by CraftCruises.com. The ports of call were
Rostock, Germany; Helsinki, Finland; St. Petersburg, Russia;
Tallinn, Estonia; Stockholm, Sweden; Copenhagen, Denmark
and back to Amsterdam. At each stop there was a yarn crawl
and other special events organized by Melissa from Craft
Cruises. Since this is an area of the world with a rich knitting
tradition, there was much to see, do, and buy. (Think of a
feeding frenzy of sharks in a yarn store!) On the sailing days
Anna Zilboorg and Merike Saarniit taught classes. This was a
fun way to see these cities while having a large group of
friendly people to hang out with. Sort of a “Stitch n Bitch” on
the high seas! We had a fabulous time! You can check our

Susan Greenberg writes: It's not quite Miss America...
I recently had breakfast at The Black Bear Diner in Signal Hill, a fun, old-fashioned kind of place with terrific food and
service, and a menu to match. The menu is designed like an old country newspaper, with "articles" outside and the
menu inside. One of the "articles" caught my eye, it had something to do with a "Miss Wool" pageant. Whipping out
my iPhone I Googled "Miss Wool", and sure enough, there really WAS a Miss Wool pageant in the United States!

about the history of this event, find out the names of the winners and where they hailed from, and even see photos of
the various Miss Wools. I was particularly amused to learn that one Miss Wool had to abdicate her crown to the first
runner-up because she got married!
