From the earliest committee days the committee members dedicated themselves to the convention planning and organising processes and without question attended to their designated areas of responsibility without hesitation or complaint and very successfully—, and their input and suggestions were exceptional. And when the time came for the massive job of preparing and organising the convention site including some arduous tasks like rolling out that B... ..! Carpet I was overwhelmed by the support of both members and Lion friends. In every task there were willing hands , and the same willing hands were evident in the after convention Dismantling. Yet it was during the convention that we saw our team at its best. There was nothing left wanting throughout the convention and conventioneers were impressed and full of praise. Some even regard it as a minor miracle, the conversion of the meeting area to a banquet area on the Saturday evening, and then back to a meeting venue for Sunday morning—a miracle that would not have been impossible without YOUR extraordinary efforts, and we still all enjoyed the banquet. Yet despite our huge convention work load we still found time to perform our usual show day voluntary task of banding kids for their rides at the show—another fine team effort. There are many people I would like to thank but there are too many to do it here. But I do with heartfelt sincerity thank you all as a team for a job well done. You can be proud to be a member of the Port Fairy –Belfast Lions Club Family. Jim—Convention Chairman (See Lion President Keith’s Appreciation Page 12 ) THE LIGHT—2 JOY IN SERVICE Monthly Newsletter Lions Club Port FairyBelfast Lions at Work Planning, preparing, countless liaisons and meetings with Shire, caterers, suppliers, Flag Parade participants and more, , organising, accepting of hospitality bookings hundreds of emails, phone calls and computer hours, printing,..... And that was before we started setting up, AND during it all there were a couple of U-connect drives, a Lion Assist call out, Christmas Cake receipts, Christmas Barrow preparation, Meals on wheels and of course our famous 2/11 Melbourne Cup Eve Night. FIRE AWARENESS AWARDS The Port Fairy—Belfast Lions Club Smoke Alarm Activity has been short listed as a finalist in the State Fire Awarness Awards, The Awards Ceremony is to be held on Wednesday 2nd December at the RACV CLUB Melbourne and it is hopefully that some of invited Lions will attend. To be short listed is an honour to this club and the effort YOU the members are making to ensure the peace of mind of so many of our elderly and infirm. This year more than 140 smoke alarm batteries were replaced and five new alarms fitted. Particularly noticeable was the small problems solved or better procedures developed through short brainstorming sessions amongst those involved. And often the final solution to what appeared to be a major developing problem was simple—like the wire coat hanger hooks replacing the what would have been a cumbersome ID card issue to incoming conventioneers. WELL DONE ALL—YOU CERTAINLY PROVED THAT TEAMWORK DOES MAKE THE DREAM WORK. Despite their heavy work load our girls still managed to dress up and have fun Ann Maree enjoyed the seafood at the Melbourne Cup Eve night, and Lion President Keith reckoned it was okay too......although I think it was the sweets he was destroying. You could hear their minds ticking over—the Two Keiths at the Heywood Wood Days watching some of the interesting exhibits— warning, there could be a new project in the wind. Henry and Jeanette dance the light fandango THE LIGHT—4 Monthly Newsletter Lions Club Port Fairy– BelSubject: Super heroes don't wear capes, they wear Dog Tags An Army Colonel was about to start the morning briefing to his staff. While waiting for the coffee machine to finish brewing, the colonel decided to pose a question to all assembled. He explained that his wife had been a bit frisky the night before and he failed to get his usual amount of sound sleep. He posed the question of just how much of sex was "work" and how much of it was "pleasure?" A Major chimed in with 75%-25% in favour of work. A Captain said it was 50%-50%. A Lieutenant responded with 25%-75% in favour of pleasure, depending upon his state of inebriation at the time. There being no consensus, the colonel turned to the Private Soldier who was in charge of making the coffee and asked for his opinion? Without any hesitation, the young Private Soldier responded, "Sir, it has to be 100% pleasure. The colonel was surprised and as you might guess, asked why? "Well, sir, if there was any work involved, the officers would have me doing it for them." The room fell silent. God Bless the enlisted man An old Australian battler lies dying in his bed. He calls over Shirley, his faithful wife of 60 years, and says, "Shirl, when we started out, tried to buy a business in the depression, went bust: you were with me" "Oh, yes, Bruce", she says. Then the war started, I joined up, and was sent to the front line, where I lost me legs. You stayed with me." "Oh yes, Bruce" she says. "Then, came home, couldn't get a job, due to me disability, and bought a farm." "Oh, yes, Bruce", she says. "The farm flooded, then just when we got over that, there was a bushfire, and then the drought, which wiped us right out: you still stayed with me." "Oh yes, Bruce," "Now here I am, in excruiating pain, about to die, useless and you're still with me." "Yes Bruce." "Shirl." "Yes, Bruce?" "You're bloody bad luck" A man and his wife were sitting in the living room and he said to her, "Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug." His wife got up, unplugged the TV and threw out all of his beer. Bob’s Banter An American decided to write a book about famous churches around the world. So he bought a plane ticket and took a trip to Orlando, thinking that he would start by working his way across the USA from South to North. On his first day he was inside a church taking photographs when he noticed golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read "$10,000 per call". The American, being intrigued, asked priest who was strolling by what the telephone was used for. The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 you could talk to God. The American thanked the priest and went along his way. Next stop was in Atlanta. There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same golden telephone with the same sign under it. He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in Orlando and he asked a nearby nun what its purpose was.She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 he could talk to God. O.K., thank you," said the American. He then travelled to Indianapolis, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York. In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same "$10,000 per call" sign under it. The American, upon leaving Vermont decided to travel to AUSTRALIA to see if Australians had the same phone. He arrived in Australia, and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read "40 cents per call." The American was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign. Father, I've travelled all over America and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to Heaven, but in the US the price was $10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?" The priest smiled and answered, "You're in Australia now, mate - it's a local call". Two paddies were working for the city public works department. One would dig a hole and the other would follow behind him and fill the hole in. They worked up one side of the street, then down the other, then moved on to the next street, working furiously all day without rest, one man digging a hole, the other filling it in again. An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn't understand what they were doing. So he asked the hole digger, "I'm impressed by the effort you two are putting in to your work, but I don't get it - why do you dig a hole, only to have your partner follow behind and fill it up again?" The hole digger wiped his brow and sighed, "Well, I suppose it probably looks odd because we're normally a three-person team. But today the lad who plants the trees called in sick.'" Husband: You always carry my photo in your handbag to the office. Why? Wife: When I have a problem, no matter how bad it is, I look at your picture and all the problems in the world disappears. Husband: You see how miraculous and powerful I am for you? Wife: Yes, I see your picture and say to myself "What other problem can there be greater than this one?" THE LIGHT—5 Monthly Newsletter Lions Club Port Fairy—Belfast Sues’ Snippets A person with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds..... Mark Twain President Keith Gibson President Port Fairy Belfast Lions Club. Dear Lion Keith, After many months of planning, talking, conniving in the best possible way the V2 Convention is imminent. Keith when it first crossed my mind that Port Fairy could host the 2015 District Convention, I looked at the Club members and thought this should be a piece of cake, there is so much talent among the members it will be a walk in the park. The hard part was convincing the Club. At first there was some resistance but finally the Club said yes, and like any project adopted by the Port Fairy Lions Club you enthusiastically joined the Committee and started planning and organizing. Along the way others were co -opted for there considerable skills in certain areas. There was a slight hiccup when the Convention Chairman announced that he would not be at the Convention, but living in Maclean northern New South Wales. I know this upset some Lions and I can assure you the wounds to my back have completely healed. If the truth be known it wasn't a hiccup at all for you had among your ranks a Lion of considerable skills and Lion Jim quietly stepped up and took over the ship and you sailed merrily along. Now this coming weekend will prove the faith I had in the Lions of the Port Fairy Club. You will present to District 201 V2 a Convention that will be talked about for years and will become a yardstick for future Conventions. President Keith and Chairman Jim you have both shown strong leadership and I wish you and the Lions of Port Fairy Belfast all the very best for this coming weekend and I know it will be a great success. Lion Peter and I will be thinking of you Friday night as you look forward to a fabulous weekend of Lions fun and frolic. Enjoy yourselves and above all enjoy the weekend. Yours in Lionsm Jeffrey P Sproal (PDG) Peter Ryan It Happened at the Convention On Saturday at lunch time four French tourists appeared at the convention doorway. They were also Lions and I was struggling to make conversation when along came our MC PCC Maurie who speaks fluent French. An animated and apparently delightful conversation followed resulting in four happy French people and a bannerette swap with CC Philip Johnson. Well done Maurie, you were not only a great MC but also a wonderful ambassador At the DG Dinner on Friday Lions lady Coral Heazlewood mentioned that her maiden name was Kent—just a coincidence, I thought, until she told me that her ancestors came from a little Berkshire village called Wantage– from which my own ancestors came from! We referred to each other as cousins throughout the Sadly, the finger has been pointed at us for insufficient Convention booklets— we placed them in the satchels and gave them to non Lions.. Perhaps we did a couple of times, but very rarely— and while 300 booklets were printed there were 316 Lions,, 13 Lionesses, 4 Leos and half a dozen visiting Lions all entitled to and demanding a satchel.’ Lots of bouquets to Blake’s Restaurant—a fine serving for the DG’s dinner and, as promised, finished on time for the official party to get to the opening.... Perhaps the same can’t be said for another establishment that fed our Presidents on Saturday, despite the dinner orders delivered earlier in the day.! Our South West Leos Club President Waverlea Laird carried the United Nations Flag in the flag ceremony = and also read the Leo’s Pledge on opening night. Waverlee also assisted Geraldine A2S team waiting on the tables at the Banquet. A big night—over 60 attending, including a strong contingent of well dressed Warrnambool Lions, a great meal—call of the card—the prestigious Ray Stokie Cup— Fashions on the field, top hats, -a flower auction, and raffles—It was another successful cup eve fun night thoroughly enjoyed by all, Lion Lloyd Phelan won the Ray Stokie cup ( protests were banned) A Huge Thanks from Lion Peter Down for all who assisted, and a special thanks to Lions Lady Gail for the floral table arrangements that were finally auctioned for around $130 . Lion Ralph Leutton again gave a fine call of the card but yet again failed to nominate the actual winner of the cup. Some of the happy crowd with Lion Vic holding the floor The Warrnambool Lions really joined in the spirit of the night in a fantastic array of finery. The Unique Ray Stokie Cup consisted of four races with Lion Lloyd Phelan taking out the prestigious cup ( Right) The starter’s chore was a difficult one but there was still at least one “horse” left at the barrier. No—Lion Vic was given a favourable handicap—he just managed to creep surreptitiously creep forward but still failed to win the heat....Lions Lady Nicki was just too good. THE LIGHT—7 . Saturday morning saw the revival of the Lion Street march, led by Lion “Macca” in THAT suit ( after the fleas were Removed, he said ) The band was trucked ahead of the march and the whaleboat figured. THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO FOUND JOY IN SERVING AT THE CONVENTION \President Keith / Sues’ Snippets Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. Mark Twain AN APPRECIATION AND A THANKYOU With the Convention done and dusted I am making no assessment of its success or otherwise., Over 460 visiting Lions and Partners from 201V2 will make their own judgements as to where our convention rates amongst the Conventions of the past. What I wish to do is to express my sincere appreciation to all Lions, thier partners, and our assisting friends including local organisations whose united efforts enable our organising committee to achieve their aim of presenting a convention that would be talked about for years to come. Lions and partners who accepted leadership responsibilities performed their roles with exceptional diligence, ensuring a very smooth and professionally run event. Of the about 20 team leaders not one let the team down or failed to meet his/her objectives. Teams worked together to assist each other wherever and whenever they saw a need in the true spirit of Lionism. The stadium set up on Thursday was brilliant, made possible by a large team of willing Lions. THANK YOU ALL. The conversion from meeting venue to banquet hall on Saturday was our greatest achievement—some called it a miracle—and didn't it look fantastic! CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL INVOLVED. The cleanup on Saturday night was another great example of teamwork—our Lions at work. I doubt if any of our present Lions Club members would ever put themselves forward to conduct another convention. But now that it is all over the decision to have a go, whilst a huge effort, has had significant benefits for our club. It has given us the opportunity to involve new members and make them feel a part of not only the club but the District and Lions International. It has encouraged us to work together as a team, to find common ground when issues arose—and we did that extremely well. We laughed a lot even when faced with problems, a point not lost on PDG John Greenwood of the District Convention team, when early in the piece he recognised and mentioned the unity and willingness of our committee to work together. The exercise has bonded us together as a strong and untied club and the success of the convention is our personal reward. THANK YOU ALL. You can be genuinely proud of what your efforts achieved, raising the profile and reputation of the Port fairy—Belfast Lions Club in District 201V2. Hopefully history will judge our convention up amongst the all time greats. THANK YOU AGAIN—Lion president Keith FOR SALE Want a souvenir of the Convention?
