Ticks are active in the northeastern USA all winter long, and if they feed, they can transmit tick-borne
diseases. If pets, dogs or cats, are going to be allowed outside in the winter, they need to be protected
against tick acquisition and feeding.
This talk will discuss newer findings for equine herpes viruses 1,2,4 and 5, newer information on
Strangles, equine rhinitis virus infection, Klebsiella spp. pneumonia in adult horses
and Rhodococcus equi pneumonia in foals.

Flea control is now successful and easy. Young folks working in veterinary medicine have no idea of
what flea control was like before the development of the modern monthly treatment products that
really work. Control is essential to a good pet-family relationship.
This talk will discuss newer findings in equine intestinal disease resulting from enteric coronavirus
infection , Potomac Horse Fever, intestinal Clostridiosis, and the numerous causes of foal diarrhea. Additionally, the clinical importance of the 4 recently discovered equine hepatitis viruses
will be discussed.

This talk will discuss Borrelia burdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilia and
the potential for other tickborne infections in horses in the Northeast.

The Modern Maturity Center's mission is to provide programs and services that
will enhance the quality of life, with dignity and respect, for older adults. Its
first floor banquet facilities offers comfortable, affordable space to host booths,
lectures and meals.
CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT
The 2016 Spring Conference of the Delaware Veterinary Medical Association
offers 6.0 CE credits to veterinarians, veterinary technicians and support staff.
The DVMA may provide CE credit, at the rate of 1.0 credits per 50 minutes of
instruction, per the approval of Delaware’s Title 24, 3300 Board of Veterinary
Medicine, Section 9.5.3.
Conference certificates will be provided during the afternoon sessions to all
attendees registered within one week of the conference. All others will receive
their certificate via email if a valid email address has been provided.
EXHIBIT HALL
Our exhibitors add an aspect of quality, informational services, and support that
benefits the entire veterinary profession. Please visit them during the course of
your day. Exhibits are open from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM in the halls and ballroom.
CONFERENCE MEALS
A continental breakfast will be served from 8:00 to 9:00 AM for all registrants
and exhibitors. Breaks will occur at 10:15 AM and 3:15 PM. The Luncheon and
General Membership Meeting will occur at noon and is included in your conference registration, but pre-registration is required — please make note of your
attendance on the registration form on the reverse of this page. If you wish to
enjoy a private conversation with colleagues during the lunch hours, please
visit one of Delaware’s many restaurants to prevent disruption to the business
portion of the general membership meeting.

the North Dover exit (#104). Do not turn onto Route 13. Cross Route 13 to take the
Dover by-pass. Stay on the by-pass for approximately 3.2 miles. At the 4th traffic
light, turn right onto State Route 8. The Modern Maturity Center is 0.2 miles on
your right at the next traffic light. Follow the DCTM signs to the appropriate entrance.
From Rehoboth and Points South using Route 13 to Dover: Turn left onto
State Route 8 West / Division Street.
From southern Delaware using Route 13 to Dover, turn left onto State
Route 8 West / Division Street. Landmarks at this intersection include the Edgehill
Shopping Center on the right and a large water tower on the left. Drive approximately 1.9 miles (10 traffic lights) to the Modern Maturity Center on your right.
The 10th traffic light is at the entrance to the Modern Maturity Center. Follow the
DCTM signs to the appropriate entrance.

JAMES A. ORSINI, DVM, DIPL. ACVS
Associate Professor of Surgery | University of Pennsylvania
James A. Orsini, is an Associate Professor of Surgery, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Orsini received his DVM from Cornell University in 1977 and completed his internship and surgery
residency training at Penn’s New Bolton Center campus. He is board certified in surgery by the American
College of Veterinary Surgeons with a special interest and expertise in orthopedic and reconstructive surgery
and laminitis. Dr. Orsini has published extensively on equine pediatric surgery, antimicrobials, laminitis,
gastric ulcers, pain and anti-inflammatory medications and related fields with more than 400 publications.
He is co-editor of Equine Emergencies: Treatment and Procedures, which is in its fourth edition and published in six languages. Dr.
Orsini’s current research interests are in pain management and understanding the pathophysiology of laminitis, prevention and improved treatments. He has directed 10 national and international meetings on Laminitis and Diseases of the Foot.

Steffen Professor of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University
Dr. Thomas J. Divers earned his DVM from the University of Georgia and completed an
internship in large animal medicine at the University of California at Davis. Dr. Divers
returned to the University of Georgia for a residency in large animal internal edicine and
ambulatory practice and later worked for 2 years as an assistant professor in the large
animal medicine and ambulatory practice at the College. Dr. Divers then moved to the University of Pennsylvania for 10 years where he was an associate professor of large animal medicine and served as chief of
the section of medicine at the New Bolton Center of the University of Pennsylvania. Currently Dr. Divers is
Professor of Medicine and co-Chief of the Section of Large Animal Medicine at Cornell University. He has
been the recipient of teaching awards at three universities, has received the Educator of the Year Award
from both the AAEP and ACVECC and recently received the Cornell University Hospital for Animals Distinquished Service Award for
service to referring veterinarians. He is a diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and of the American
College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Dr. Divers is currently consulting editor of Veterinary Clinics of North AmericaEquine Practice. Dr. Divers’ current research focuses on newly - discovered hepatitis viruses in horses. Other research activities have
included bacterial and toxic causes of liver failure in horses, equine neurological diseases including equine motor neuron disease and
equine protozoal myelitis, equine lyme disease, equine leptospirosis, diseases of the urinary system and advances in internal medicine
and critical care for horses, foals and dairy cattle.

Professor of Parasitology | Cornell University , Colleg of Veterinary Medicine
As a parasitologist, the focus of Dr. Bowman’s research has been on the
biology of parasitic infections, testing of various agents for efficacy against
parasites, disinfection of parasites in manures and sewage sludges, and
improved diagnostics. Dr. Bowman graduated with honors in Biology from
Hiram, College in Hiram, OH, in 1974. He received his MS and PHD degrees in parasitology from
Tulane University in New Orleans, in 1976 and 1983. He was a postdoctoral scientist/lecturer at
the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Wisconsin Madison from 1984-1987. He
joined the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1987, and is currently a Full
Professor in Parasitology. He teaches courses in the veterinary, graduate, and undergraduate curricula of the University. In
2008, he was awarded the Distinguished Veterinary Parasitologist Award by the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists. In 2009, he was awarded the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching from the State University of New
York. In 2009, he was also awarded Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine's first Community Service Award,
and a recipient in 2010 of the Kaplan Family Distinguished Faculty Fellowship in Service-Learning. He is an honorary Diplomate in the Parasitology section of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists. He is currently president of the
American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists. He was a founding member of the Companion Animal Parasite Council
which officially began in 2002, and has just completed a two-year term as president. He is author of 5 textbooks on parasitology including Georgis' Parasitology for Veterinarians. He has published around 200 peer-reviewed papers on the
topics of veterinary parasitology, and in addition to being an ad hoc reviewer for over 20 journals, serves or has served on
the Editorial Boards of Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, Comparative Parasitology, Veterinary Parasitology, International Journal for Parasitology, and the Compendium of Continuing Education for the Practicing Veterinarian.
