I was born in Jacksonville, Fla., and moved around quite a bit before settling down in the small town of Eufaula, Ala. Growing up my family was definitely a dog family, never having less than at least three dogs (mostly golden retrievers) and always a few cats. My surprisingly spry 13-year-old golden will be making the trek with me in August. Like most of you, I have wanted to be a veterinarian for longer than I can remember. I graduated high school in 2007 and went on to attend Auburn University (War Eagle!) for an undergrad in Animal Sciences and graduate school after. In 2013 I earned my master’s degree in Animal Behavior and Herd Health Management. I now currently work as a research associate for the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Over the course of my tenure at Auburn I have worked for multiple companion animal vets as well as large animal veterinarians. My master’s research focused on using the natural behaviors of dairy cattle to make dairy farm management as a whole more efficient. As I mentioned earlier, I now work under several large animal veterinarians at the Auburn University CVM. My research consists mostly entirely of working with several breeds of draft horses. Based on these experiences I know that I am willing to work with almost every animal but one day would like to own a small animal practice. I have also considered several residencies after completing the DVM program. I recently got engaged to a girl way better than I deserve and she will be moving to Harrogate once she finishes grad school in December. I enjoy almost any sport, especially golf, soccer and, most importantly, college football. I also thoroughly enjoy traveling and snow skiing and I am looking forward to finally living somewhere relatively close to the mountains. I am beyond excited to start the next chapter of my life at LMU and I cannot wait to meet everyone in August. 3 LMU Veterinary Medicine Digital Book Package – Fall 2014 Dear Incoming Veterinary Medicine Students: Technology is becoming a bigger and bigger part of health care practice, and health care education is following suit. In order to more effectively leverage technology in your courses and offer you a better educational experience, we decided to offer you a digital textbook bundle for the fall semester. The textbooks and electronic course materials that we require for our program play an important role in your education and in your ultimate success in school and beyond. However, we also know that they can be expensive - especially in the first semester when you need to purchase so many items at once. 13. To help you save money, we have partnered with Elsevier to create special packages of the course materials required for class. This is a unique offer just for our students. We realize that you may or may not have used digital text books before, so we wanted to share some information with you to make sure you have all the facts: These digital books will be available on Pageburst, an educational platform from Elsevier, one of our health science publishers. You do not need an e-reader to access Pageburst. Your Pageburst books can be downloaded on your Mac or PC, as well as on your Apple or Android mobile device or tablet. You can also access Pageburst in the library, computer lab, or anywhere you go online. (Access three unique ways for each student) These digital books come with lifetime access to your course content on Pageburst. You can make notes and create highlights throughout your books. Unlike your print books, you can easily share your notes and highlights with your peers and your instructors will also be sharing some of their notes via this platform. Also unlike your print books, the digital books are highly searchable – you can search for topics or terms throughout all of your books at one time. The digital books are also very portable. So instead of having to carry around heavy textbooks everywhere you go, you can bring your laptop, mobile phone, or tablet and all your books will be available. Lastly, in an effort to keep textbook prices down, when you buy your Pageburst eBook bundle, you’ll save 40% on the eBooks as well as a discounted price on the one printed text book in the bundle. A representative from Elsevier will be16. presenting the functionality of the digital books during orientation. But before then, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Sarah Morehouse and I am from the small town of Wingdale, N.Y. My interest in the veterinary field started as a young girl visiting my uncle's dairy farm in Vermont. Immediately after graduating with my bachelor's degree in veterinary technology, I began working at a busy small animal hospital. Getting clinical experience and working as an urgent care tech has definitely prepared me for vet school. For the past couple years I have been involved with a Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) program through a local shelter. Through LMU I am hoping to give back to animal shelters in East Tennessee and beyond. A few of my hobbies include go carting, beagling, watching sports, listening to music and of course shopping! I can't wait to meet you guys in August and begin this journey together! And just for the record... what kind of New Yorker would I be if I didn't love the New York Yankees! 5 LMU-CVM CLASSMATE SPOT Fallon Newell IMPORTANT REMINDER! The offer of a seat in our program is contingent upon successfully completing all required pre-requisite courses and providing all application material Hello fellow classmates, My name is Fallon Newell and I was born in Brevard, N.C., a tiny town in Western North Carolina. I graduated from Berry College in Rome, Ga., in December of 2013 with a BS in Animal Science. My love affair with veterinary medicine started quite young. When I was four my parents made the "mistake" of getting two spring lambs with plans to slaughter in the fall so they did not have to mow as much. However, in the process they took me and my younger sister to a sheep show; when the lambs arrived my first question was, "When do I get to show my sheep?" We quickly purchased a starter flock of Romney sheep and it took off from there; the original spring lambs died at the ripe old age of eleven and thirteen. Eighteen years after the purchase of the original lambs my family has a flock of over 100, a small herd of commercial cattle, nine dogs, two cats and a horse! I got a lot of hands-on experience, especially with the sheep growing up. Working with my own animals I fell in love with the field of veterinary medicine. My experience with the farm has always led me towards the path of production medicine especially in the Appalachian region where production vets are few and far between. I'm excited to join the inaugural class at LMU and will be moving with my Australian Shepherd, Copper, who is crazy and takes up most of my time! See you in August!
