President’s Address
Greetings, again, everyone!
Here in the Prairies of western Canada we seem to have arrived at
an early spring. There is no snow. We have had a bit of rain and the
temperatures
have,
on
occasion,
seemed
like
July
(28oC).
Personally, I am hoping for snow (which is fairly common this time of
year) as drought conditions are forecast for our area.
The first thing to do is to extend a very big “Thank You” to Richard
Wall (our intrepid Secretary/Treasurer) and his team for getting our
Twitter site (@WAAVPPARA), Facebook page (www.facebook.com/
waavppara/) functional and looking great. Please join both of these
online tools to keep informed of goings on in our association.
Have a look also at the re-vitalized webpage (www.waavp.org) as it presents a new format and several new links.
There is also a special members’ only portion with new payment options which makes these operational tasks
much easier. Again we should extend our thanks to Richard Wall and his team.
It is now time to be thinking about the next conference in 2017. It will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention
Centre in Malaysia which is centrally located and is next to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers (for those of you
who remember Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the movie, Entrapment). The dates to set aside are 4
– 8 September, 2017. Dr Mohamed and the Local Organizing Committee have been working extremely hard to
put together a program that is both full of great science and a good helping of local flavour. I believe that this is
WAAVP’s first conference to be held in southeast Asia -- a great opportunity to learn about the parasitic
problems that are unique to this region but also a great occasion to take some extra time to experience a
particularly
beautiful part
of
the
world.

Update from the Secretary/Treasurer
For the last few months, we’ve been working hard
to create a social media presence.
We have created a new Facebook page, which
has helped to promote numerous conferences
such as the Brazilian Conference of Veterinary
Parasitology, The 25th Pan-American Conference
of Veterinary Sciences PANVET 2016, the 60th Annual Livestock Insect Workers’ Conference and of course,
the 2017 WAAVP Conference which is being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We hope to expand the use of this
site, but need members to supply information about events or post comments. To visit our Facebook page, please

We have also started a new Twitter account, which has celebrated numerous articles and successes which
include the congratulation of the former WAAVP President, Dr Peter Holdsworth, on receiving the award of

Last, but certainly not least, we have now launched our brand new website! This was quite a non-trivial exercise
and we would like to thank William Hickson, who has managed our website so well to date and welcome our new
web managers ‘Blue Fusion’. As expected with such a major change, there have been a few teething problems,
and our apologies to those who experienced a little difficulty at first; this was largely an issue for those whose
membership dues were not up to date! But gradually we are clearing up any remaining bugs and hope to add and

Conference Introduction
The World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP) was formally established on 16
August, 1963. It is the largest international veterinary parasitology organisation in the world and cooperates with
various national, international and affiliated organizations, such as WHO and FAO, in all matters concerning
veterinary parasitology. The Association also plays important roles in preparing and publishing anthelmintic
guidelines and participates in the development of the official VICH guidelines for anthelmintic testing.
WAAVP conferences are held biennially in various major cities around the world for the past 52 years. For the
first time Malaysia is hosting the 26th International Conference of the World Association for the Advancement of
Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP 2017) which will be held from 4 – 8 September 2017 at Kuala Lumpur
Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Conference theme is: “Combating Zoonoses: Strength in East – West Partnerships” .
The Conference provides an opportunity for scientists who study the parasites of animals, encompassing
helminthology, protozoology and entomology to meet with each other to discuss the matters of common interest
and benefit from a comprehensive and ambitious scientific programme designed by the organising committee,
which will include presentations by a range of knowledgeable speakers from within and beyond the region.
The Conference will also provide maximum opportunity for discussion, networking and informal engagement to
promote exchange of information and material amongst researchers, veterinary practitioners and animal health
investigators. It is intended that a number of priority recommendations and strategies will emerge and that these
will be endorsed by the Conference for intended action by individual member states.

About WAAVP and WAAVP 2017
The World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary
Parasitology (WAAVP) was formally established on 16th
August, 1963. It is the largest international veterinary
parasitology organisation in the world. WAAVP is a non-profit
organization for scientists who study the parasites of
animals, encompassing helminthology, protozoology and
entomology. The Association encourages research in
veterinary parasitology and to promote exchange of
information and material amongst researchers, veterinary
practitioners and animal health investigators. Apart from
organising scientific meetings, the Association, which is
affiliated with the World Veterinary Association, cooperates

The WAAVP 2017 organising committee would like to invite
prospective authors to submit abstracts for oral and poster
presentations at the Conference.

We asked each awardee to contribute an article about their impressions and highlights of their trip to the WAAVP
Liverpool conference. Unfortunately neither Dr Olubukola Adenubi or Dr Ahmed Hassan were able to attend the
conference. Our apologies to Dr Shakirat Adetunji whose article was published under the wrong name in the last
edition of the WAAVP newsletter.
Impressions and highlights of the WAAVP 2015 conference in Liverpool, UK
Dr Shakirat A. Adetunji (DVM)
Even though I had a rough travel experience to Liverpool where the 25th International Conference of the WAAVP
was held, I enjoyed the great moments I had throughout my stay. It didn’t feel like the first time at the conference
at all, in fact you would think I had always attended from the first time they started.
The beautiful love-lock view above from the promenade at Liverpool’s Albert Dock not only caught my attention
but also melted my heart to the sentimental and unconditional love people share. It was my first experience of this,
that made it exceptional.
Alright, before I get too distracted, let’s get to the highlights of the conference.

Bayer’s many triumphs: There is no doubt Bayer Healthcare has contributed substantially to animal and
human welfare through their innovative therapies and preventive solutions. The successes recorded
especially in ectoparasite control in animals are outstanding and these have led to an amelioration of
varying diseases of humans, companion and farm animals.

Novel approaches to the control of parasites: Studies on the effective use of various bioactive plants and

their products to control ecto and endo-parasites in animals have been in existence for decades and it’s
fascinating to know new promising discoveries are happening.

One Health: Interestingly, there were lots of research studies including mine that explored the interactions
between human, animal and the environment, and how these relationship can help to achieve improved
health and sustainability.

Lunch: It was really nice to have delicious meals served for lunch throughout the conference period. The
one I enjoyed most was coconut braised crispy duck with roasted rice, Chinese leaf, papaya and chili salad.
I must say it’s the best I have had this year! Thanks to all our lunch sponsors (Bayer Healthcare, Merial and
Elanco)
An international conference such as the WAAVP not only exposes you to new people and research but also
inspires you to keep up with your challenges and continue to make relevant contributions to science.
It was exciting to make new friends and have interactions with a network of professional colleagues. In addition, I
was happy to meet two of my professors from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, Dr I.O. Ademola and Dr A.O.
Adediran.
I would urge the organizers of the WAAVP conference to make it to be as student-centered as possible. There
should be activities that foster students interrelationship as this could impact greatly on the future of science.
Being an international conference, I suggest a student association which would comprise of representatives from
each region of the world to interact and share ideas.
In conclusion, I would love to express my sincere gratitude to my ever supportive and inspiring mentors, Dr.
Rosina C. Krecek and Dr. Maria D. Esteve-Gassent; the WAAVP African Foundation for the travel scholarship
awarded to me; and Texas A&M University, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences for financial
support for my travel expenses.

Dreams Come True…..

All thanks to the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary
Parasitology (WAAVP) African foundation that has made it possible for me
and some other young African Veterinary Parasitologist to attend and
participate in this year's WAAVP conference in Liverpool through the
provision of a travel grants.
It is undeniable that the WAAVP being the highest international veterinary
organization in the world has always brought together eminent scientist who
come together to share their knowledge and research in the arena of
Parasitology during WAAVP conferences. Therefore, being a young, growing
scientist and Veterinary Parasitologist, it has always been my utmost desire
to attend a WAAVP conference as that would afford me the rare privilege of
meeting and interacting with distinguished Veterinary Parasitologists and
researchers who similar research interest with me. Such I knew will bridge
time and space for me to attain greater heights in my career and profession
as a Veterinary Parasitologist.

The conference in Liverpool gave me the excellent opportunity for global
networking by interacting with veterinary parasitologists all over the world as
well the privilege of listening to thought provoking keynote lectures delivered by
eminent scientists. Indeed, participating at the conference was a great leap to
higher grounds and it has really taken my research activities to the next level. I
returned toNigeria highly motivated and challenged. It was equally a wonderful
social experience for me in Liverpool and other places I visited. I made new
and wonderful friends, visited places such as the Liverpool stadium, Arnfield
and the Old Trafford stadium in Manchester.
Once again, I thank the Foundation and the
organizers of the WAAVP conference for
giving me such a great opportunity. The
award shall prove to be priceless in my life
in no distant time

Impression of participation in the 25th WAAVP-2015 conference in Liverpool, England
Dr Mawahib Ahmed
I am very grateful to WAAVP African Foundation for giving
me the opportunity to attend the 25th WAAVP-2015
conference in Liverpool, England.
As a postdoctoral fellow in the field of veterinary
parasitology, attending this conference offered me the
chance to meet with famous scientists of the field. Thus,
discuss my research related problems and solutions. It was
an opportunity for me to gather information on new
technologies and instruments related to my research area. It
also allowed me to extend and establish a good network
with people working in different part of the world. I created
new contacts that were in line with my research but lot more
with those who were interested in what I was doing. Some
were very pleased and would very much love to work with
me in future.
I presented a talk (Title: In vitro and in vivo effects of Aloe
ferox plants on gastrointestinal nematodes and live weight
gain of growing sheep, Reference number 0053). This talk
generated a lot of interest from many researchers who were
anxious to know how such studies were performed. I meet
members from Egyptian Institute of Agricultural Research
(ENRA) whom we had met previously at a conference in
China and they were quite happy for me to do some
collaborative work. I requested for training on the drug
discovery area so that we can maximize the usage of
organic compounds on the control of nematode parasites
and they accepted. There were also many other interactions
and collaborative works proposed and emails exchanged.
Attending this event gave me a great experience that helped
me to develop myself and gain confidence in my research
projects. Moreover, allowed me to exchange new ideas from
some professors and students who work in my field.

WAAVP Report, Liverpool 2015
Dr Zamantungwa Khumalo
The trip to the UK, Liverpool was scheduled from the 16 to the 21st of August 2015, On the 14 of August Friday.
We took a flight at O.R Tambo airport Etihad airlines where we departed at 20:00pm and we arrived ABU DHABI
airport after 8hrs, we connected at ABU DHABI to Manchester airport which took us 8hrs, and from the airport I
connected to a train that dropped me at Days inn hotel for 12 pounds.
On the 16 of August, Sunday we (I and Charles: who is a PhD fellow at University of Pretoria) took a trip around
Liverpool to familiarize ourselves with the place (we saw the shopping center that had various shops and a
memorable dock that was built by Thomas steers between 1709 and 1715). After the tour we went to Arena
convectional center where the conference was to be held. It was two streets away from the Days inn hotel, next
to Albert Dock. We registered and plugged in posters in the given spot, we then met and greeted the delegates;
amongst the delegates it was exciting to see people from different countries and different Universities and
sponsors.
On the 17th of August 24, 2015. We were welcomed warmly by the Lord Mayor who briefly told us about Liverpool
history and that they take pride of and the football that has a good record and the good people. An item was
rendered by Danielle Thomas who is an opera singer, she sang three songs. John Farnsworth who is footballer
free styler showed us some few tricks. We felt welcomed and safe.
We had a 1-hour plenary talk by the Lord Robert May on the Parasites in a changing world, he touched on
problems in Veterinary Parasitology that are likely to arise as the planet warms to essentially unique levels. He
also pointed that there is irregularities in terms of research fund availabilities in developing countries and
developed countries, as there is more funds available for developed countries research yet few diseases are
emerging as opposed to the developing countries after the plenary 5 parallel sessions took over in specific rooms
for different subjects. Most of the talks talked about helminthes from detection, Climate change, epidemiology
and modeling, Novel approaches to chemical and non-chemical control (endo and ecto-parasies), vaccines and
immunology and one health.
Professor Wendy C Brown delivered a talk on a subject relevant to my research topic about“Anaplasma
marginale “, it was an honor to listen to her as we cite most of her research work. I was motivated to ask her a
question regarding the classification of A. centrale and she answered it with good clarification.

On Thursday 20 August 2015
We had a long day with 5 parallel sessions that ended at 7:30pm, I mainly attended the Genes and Genomics
and after lunch the Companion animal session, all talks were good and informative.
Afterwards, we attended a Gala dinner which was sponsored by the Merial at the Lady Chapel Cathedral, we had

and we danced all night long.

PhD research work and networking with Parasitologists from

(WAAVP AF)
The WAAVP African Foundation will provide a limited number
of partial scholarships to assist veterinary parasitologists
from Africa to attend the 26th WAAVP Conference (WAAVP 2017)
to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 4–8 September 2017.
Applications should include:
• A copy of the abstract(s) for paper(s) or poster(s) which were
submitted to the 26th WAAVP Conference Convenor;
• A letter of recommendation from a current supervisor;
• An indication of how other costs (beyond a WAAVP AF grant) will
be met (i.e., possibility of obtaining supplemental funds
elsewhere);
• Other envisaged contributions to the conference (i.e.,
workshop participant, chairperson of session, etc.); and
• A brief indication of how the applicant sees attendance
contributing to his/her development in veterinary parasitology.

The Indian Association for the advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (IAAVP) was established in February
1986 for the speedy and focused development of Veterinary Parasitology . The Association has completed 30
years of its glorious existence and organized twenty five National Conferences besides besides one Asian
Congress in 1990 and National Seminar in 2007. The strength of the life members has grown from 14 to about
600 during the period. This period has also seen a large number of members achieving many distinctions in their
career and many more are on the path of achieving similar success. The Journal of Veterinary Parasitology
(JVP), is an official organ of IAAVP. It publishes the results of original research work covering basic and applied
aspects of Parasitology which are of interest to animal health. Two issuese published each year since 1987,
regularly.
In the present year XXV National Congress (Silver Jubilee conference) of Veterinary Parasitology and National
Symposium on “ONE HEALTH APPROACH – PLAUSIBLE SOLUTION FOR SUSTAINABLE PARASITE
CONTROL” from 17 to 19 February 2016 was organized by IAAVP at Department of Veterinary Parasitology,
Madras Veterinary College, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai. The conference
was enthusiastically organized by the team of Professor Ms. Bhaskaran Ravi latha, Organizing Secretary. The
'One health' concept believes in recognizing the link between human, domestic animal and wildlife health and the
threat of disease transmission to people. It is hence essential to build interdisciplinary bridges involving medical,
veterinary professionals and environmental scientists to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. This scientific
congress was conceived with an idea to provide a dynamic platform to bring together scientists from all over to
address the potential threats of parasites, its impact on the lives of people and ways and means to ensure
sustained
control

Dr. L. D. Singla, Professor, Department of Veterinary Parasitology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal
Sciences University, Ludhiana has been honoured with Smt. Nisha Mani Parija Oration Award-2014 by Indian
Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology in recognition of his valuable contributions and
achievements in the field of parasitic zoonoses. The prestigious award was presented to him by Prof. Dr. S.
Geethalakshmi, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai and Prof. Dr. S. Thilagar,
Vice Chancellor Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai at 25th National Congress of
Veterinary Parasitology and National Symposium on “One Health Approach – Plausible Solution for Sustainable
Parasite Control” held at Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai from 17-19 February,
2016. During this conference, Dr Singla also presented Dr. D.P. Banerjee memorial oration award lecture in
recognition of his valuable contributions and achievements in the field of Veterinary Protozoology for the year
2014 on “Molecular diagnostic approaches in determining current status of haemoprotozoan diseases in equines
and bovines of Punjab state.” Dr. Singla acted as Jury member for Judgment of best poster awards and was
elected Joined Secretary of the Association for the years 2016-18 during the conference.
