60 ART Y E ARS OF St. James Court Art Show Sept. 30, Oct. 1 & 2, 2016 Louisville Metro Council Office of Councilman David James david.james@louisvilleky.gov www.louisvilleky.gov Welcome from Councilman David James Greetings: On behalf of Louisville Metro District 6, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 60th Anniversary and celebration of the St. James Court Art Show. Ranked in the Top Ten Fine Art Shows in the country, this autumn tradition draws over two hundred thousand visitors each year, who come to purchase unique art directly from the hands that crafted it. The show is held in the heart of historic Old Louisville, which boasts the largest collection of Victorian homes in the country, which I am proud to represent. Thousands of masterworks will be exhibited and sold along St. James, Belgravia Court, Magnolia Avenue, and the adjacent blocks to Third and Fourth Streets, an elegant backdrop for this display of fine arts and crafts. Again, welcome and congratulations on your 60th Anniversary; you have my very best wishes. 601 W. Jefferson Street · (502) 574-1106 · Louisville, KY 40202 2 St. James Court Art Show 2016 Please join us in thanking our sponsors and partners, whose investment in the St. James Court Art Show directly affects the quality of our event and life in our community. We can’t believe the variation of art work! Thank you to all the artists that put their heart and soul into each piece. Every work of art was auctioned off at the St. James Court Charitable Foundation Cocktail Party as a fundraiser for the Scholarship Fund. Since 1978, the Scholarship Fund has given out more than $250,000 to high school students planning to study art in college. While not all scholarship recipients become working artists, we hope we have contributed to the growth of creativity that resides in each of them. Louisville, KY Booth SJ-113 60th Anniversary Art Print Designed by Mark Bird About the Artist This piece represents the magic that St. James Court and the St. James Court Art Show have meant in my life from a very young age. My father’s youngest brother, Malcolm B. Bird, was the founder of the Art Show in 1957. Malcolm and his friends owned and occupied the Cawein House at 1436 St. James Court. It was through my family’s visits to this house that I became completely mesmerized with the mystique of St. James Court. In my first year as an exhibitor in 1962, the Art Show was only in its sixth installment, but it still had all the excitement a small boy could ask for. Malcolm helped me hang my work on the clothesline as all the other artists did. I felt just like a real artist, and I was so proud. In 1980 the Art Show made yet another indelible mark on my life. My mother’s brother and youngest sibling, C. M. “Sonny” Whittle, and I had been working together for years. He and I had recently worked with a client who had just participated in the Chicago Marathon and had received a commemorative poster. Then it hit me: the next installment of the Art Show, in 1981, would be the “25th Annual.” Maybe we should design and produce a poster for it? We approached the organizers, and Malcolm of course, and they fell in love with the idea. In 1995, the Poster Competition was born and continues to the present. I am honored to have been invited to produce this work for this esteemed moment in the history of this great event. It is with pride as an artist, as a Louisvillian and as a nephew of the founder, that I present this work with the hope that the viewer will appreciate the history and understand the power of “A Tradition of Stewardship.” I believe anyone who has ever exhibited in or visited the St. James Court Art Show is indeed a steward of it and has contributed to the care of this magical place. The 60th Anniversary Art Print may be purchased at Booth #SJ-127 across from the St. James Court Fountain. Mark will be at the booth signing his print. St. James Court Art Show 2016 About the Art This illustration depicts houses on the west side of St. James Court, near the fountain. These are the buildings with which I have a familiarity and of which I have fond memories. But more important, it’s a story of a neighborhood in desperate need of attention and love. The building on the left edge of the “window” shows the derelict condition in which most of the houses found themselves in the 1950s; houses which, when built, were the epitome of elegance and fine living in Louisville, but through the generations had become forgotten relics of another time. Most were being or had been subdivided into apartments to subsidize their ongoing maintenance. At this moment, enter three young men eager to save history and rebuild the elegance of a bygone era. That movement started at 1436 St. James Court and eventually spread throughout the Court and the larger neighborhood, which we now know as Old Louisville. The illustration continues to show the birth of the Art Show and its subsequent growth to become the formidable event of today. Then continuing to the right, the Art Show closes on the last day of the weekend and the Court reverts to the elegant destination some fortunate people call home. Outside the “window” appear all the houses that comprise the Court. This effect is in memory of Sonny Whittle, who, with me, designed the inaugural Art Show poster in which these houses first appeared. In the background margin of the piece appears a vintage photograph of the salon art wall in the living room of 1436 St. James Court. It is from times spent in this room in this house that I connect so strongly to the Court and the Art Show. 5 Art Show Information 2016 Art Show Hours Friday, Sept. 30 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Saturday, Oc. 1 10 a.m.– 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2 10 a.m–5 p.m. For those with disabilities, free parking is reserved on Sixth Street along the East side of Central Park and on the north lane of Hill Street. We installed Victorian lighting along 20 blocks of Old Louisville streets and kept those lights on night after night for our community’s enjoyment and safety. We have cleaned up trash, edged our sidewalks, removed snow, installed trash receptacles and promoted recycling. We installed alley lighting for the safety of our citizens. We supported Shakespeare in the Park, provided much needed meals to school children, repaired sidewalks and so much more! None of this would have been possible without our wonderful artists, patrons, and food vendors in the 3rd Street Section of the St. James Court Art Show. Thank You for supporting the artists and food vendors on 3rd Street. Enjoy the 60th Year!
