No? Must be 102... Aaaaaah! Spring... it has sprung. I'm not so sure about all of you, but I know I'm definitely looking forward to those warm summer nights, cruising down Beach Road with the jams pumping. But before that can happen let me introduce to you Urban RacR Issue 12. We bring you two tuned monsters hailing from the Bavarian stable. Our cover car goes by the name of Jezebel, an E46 M3 owned by Matthew Quinton. Calling her a sexy mama is an understatement; supercharged to Zee-Max (hehe!) is what we'd like to say, even though Matthew is not done with the modifications yet. This is an example of how the E46 M3 should have been released in the first place. Our second feature is the type we enjoy most. As opposed to being taken on an exhilarating drive, we got our grubby little hands on a '09 spec John Cooper Works tuned Mini Cooper S. To say this Mini is like a go-kart is too cliché, even though it's true. It's more like your comfy lounger mounted fitted with a Yamaha R1's engine with the wheels mounted on rails, but more on that in the feature. We also bring you three motorsport events which include the BP Rally, the second episode of the Mill Mall Gymkhana out in Worcester and a combination of track, gymkhana and rally cars at the Dayco All Tar Rally. A lot of high octane fuel, tyres, engines and even gearboxes were disposed of to bring you this high performance issue, so enjoy. We've uploaded hundreds photos of the events features so be sure to view them, pass them on and even use them as wallpapers. From my side for now, Shafety and enjoy the read. 05 * * * * * * * * SABS tested Improve fuel consumption Increase engine power Boost octane of your fuel Reduce harmful pollutants Safe in Petrol and Diesel Works with all types of engines Product liability cover** ** TERMS AND CONDITIONS APPLY FOR MORE INFORMATION www.biomilesouthafrica.com South African National Distributor: PGA Trade, Marketing and Distribution Postal Address: PO Box 200, Rondebosch, 7701, Cape Town Email: info@biomilesouthafrica.com - Enquiries: +27 82 566 4331 / +27 83 509 8180 issue twelve | urban racr online magazine issue twelve | urban racr online magazine FEATURE: Matt Q’s Supercharged Jezebel p15-16 Check out these amazing features and stories EVENT: The BP Rally comes to the Western Cape P39-41 CAR CLUB: Team GP Motor Racing Club p13 We Drive: JCW Mini Monster p24-29 EVENT: Mill Mall Gymkhana p35-38 plus Everything Else Urban at Events This is Cape Town etc. ■ ■ 07 08 issue twelve | urban racr online magazine NEWS fresh metal Mercedes SLS It’s the return of the Gullwing! 09 issue twelve | urban racr online magazine That’s right, Mercedes’ finest hour, the 1950’s era Gullwing is revisited in 2010 in the shape of this new supercar the SLS. From it’s 6.3 litre V8 - same as the one you find in a C63 AMG, they’ve now extracted 426kW and 650Nm - that’s a big leap. The crucial bit is this however, this car is cheaper than the new McLaren and Ferrari. So, it’s cheap! (Maybe not) And more importantly, look at it! Who wouldn’t choose this over the more conventional exotics. 10 issue twelve | urban racr online magazine NEWS fresh metal McLaren MP4-12C issue twelve | urban racr online magazine It’s the return of the Mac! Now before you start complaining that its slower than a McLaren F1, understand this. The F1 cost 18 million Rand, today they’re priceless. The new car? That will set you back a modest R3.7mil and still endow you with 450 or so kW. It’s not the successor to the F1... but it still kicks ass 11 13 issue twelve | urban racr online magazine No, they're not Joburg based but in fact are Cape Town boys. Matt has owned numerous cars from a Golf I which he called “The blue beast” to a 16v Polo and various other BMWs, but this is his dream car! Matt bought and drove this car for 9 months before starting to mod it. Hmmm, 9 months, that's like giving birth to something awesome. Initially 17 personalising his car, as we all do, by upgrading the lighting of the car giving it more of a stealthy look with the Predator Chromium Angel Eyes, P46 projector lights with Xenon and Xenon fog lights, not forgetting the tinted LED indicators. The rear lights are Eagle Eye LED lights with LED license plate lights. Hell, even the interior lights are Xenon. If you have ever sat inside an M3, E36/46, you may very well know that there is not much you can do without reducing the level of comfort, even the Harman Kardon sound system is near faultless, but Rockford Fosgate pieces are expected here. Matt however, for practicality reasons has upgraded to billet aluminium race pedals from UUC and a custom polished aluminium gearlever from AA, and a CGLock driver's seat belt tensioner, as would I. At this point, I have probably irritated you enough and you are cursing me for not yet speaking about that already thought-provoking intercooler residing behind the front bumper. YES! Intercooler... Matt wanted an all-rounder, then opted for more go than show. After doing his research he teamed up with BMW Guru Zaid Coenraad at Zee Max Auto who did all the installations and tuning. That included a Rotrex C38-71 trim supercharger coupled to an Active Autowerke bypass valve, 6 550cc Active Autowerke fuel injectors controlled by an AA fuel management system utilising BMW Alpha N Software as a base. This ensures there is enough fuel to avoid detonation while boosting at 9Psi, roughly equivalent to 0.6bar. Stock M3 internals were retained along with the overly sufficient stock M3 fuel pump and fuel lines. Producing 390kw ATF and 490nm of torque through the HPF 660whp 18 issue twelve | urban racr online magazine issue twelve | urban racr online magazine fer a s t l veriefes as theted e n e a I haovugh twistaccelear ll the thr viciously00RPM RPM 000 carm the 48 8 e h fro ay to rtedline w Feramic clutch coupled to a UUC short-shift kit and DSS rod means Matt will pass you easily, whether granny shifting or double clutching. Being very much still young at heart, hence all these modifications to what already is an animal on the road equates to a beast in acceleration, but having two young kids meant 19 he could not compromise on safety. Thus, residing behind the profoundly-sexy Vorsteiner V200, 19" wheels with 8" wide fronts 10" rears are 352mm Stoptech Vented discs with EBC pads under those enormous 4-pot Stoptech callipers in red. Bilstein coilovers with adjustable dampers make up the suspension of choice here, dropping the car by 75mm at the rear and 85mm at the front, coupled to the braided hoses, Meyle rear shock-mounts, UUC adjustable rear control arms, AC Schnitzer front strut brace, Turner Motorsport Adjustable camber plates and UUC Swaybarbarian anti-roll bars. I have never felt safer through twisties as the car viciously accelerated from the 4800RPM mark where the 20 issue twelve | urban racr online magazine issue twelve | urban racr online magazine water/methanol system comes into action, all the way to the 8000RPM redline, now doing +180km/h in the bends! To say this car can beat the bends is an understatement. I won't say exactly which bends I am speaking of, except that it was a private road, well kinda. Warren (aka Wally) Reid's 180i Ballade is a sexy example of the SO4/EK Ballade. Kensington resident Wally has looked after the car since new in 2000. Originally his dad's car, he bought and took it over in 2005 and immediately set about to add his personal touches to it. Wally is of the opinion that the EK series Ballade/Civic is a future cult car but still holds the R34 21 Still buzzing with excitement after our drive, I asked Matthew what was next on the cards for Jezebel (the M3), other than a full body carbon fibre BMW GT kit with vented bonnet Matt said in earnest, “That's a secret, but I would like to thank my wife Elle for putting up with all my craziness...” Skyline as his dream car, who doesn't? Initially, Wally was happy with the standard 1800 lump and rather set about customising the exterior of the car. At the time he also had a Nissan Skyline GTX which he used for racing, so there wasn't a real need to make it go faster. Wally admits that the exterior theme PIX which he chose later became recognised as “RICE” rather than the intended “BLING,” and he aptly changed direction to the more suitable JDM style as we see here. Upon finishing University in 2007, the wheels in his head started turning and the proverbial bug had bitten. If you've considered the impact the more compact and lighter chassis make then you're 25 onto something, and that's the fact that unlike the rest of the hot hatch crew, this one can change direction quicker than a mouse. It makes a Renault Clio RS feel ponderous, and that's a big claim. This one is a 2009 edition, one of the new sparkier units. That means it foregoes the original's super charger treatment for a more traditional turbo setup. Don't expect lag however, this thing shoves from the get go and by this virtue is accompanied by the greatest aural sound track ever generated by a 1600. This stage was run twice on Friday and once again Saturday morning, taking its toll on the entry list with almost half of them retiring on Friday, and many more on Saturday due to engine, gearbox and other mechanical faults, including the likes of Warren Scholtz and Justin Gray's Class S3 VW Polo 1.6 which shed some weight and got its front-end rearranged and “Rally Bokkie” Stefanie and Willem Hugo's 4X4 Subaru Impreza Turbo who had both hit walls. Things started to heat up on stage 5; an 8-lapper reversal of the main- and back-straight of Killarney, with competitors being set off at one-minute intervals. It was not as simple as it sounds, as I previously mentioned to Rob Gillman. Exiting turn 4, turning through the narrow slipway to enter turn 1 and the main straight; Rob, pushing too hard and braking too late and getting his rear wheels onto the 2008 saw the start of what would become an annual event on the Killarney calendar. The 2009 Dayco Challenge All Tar Rally night and day event covers almost 100km of hard-braking and torturous hairpin bends coupled to fast U-turns which made for dramatic racing. This event forms a round of the Western Province Rally Championship, and because it's an all tar event on private roads, the Indy Oil Clubmans and Powerflow GTi Challenge competitors could also enter with their cars. An initial 35 cars entered the event, I was excited at the prospect of witnessing some serious action. If you have never been a spectator at a rally you are seriously missing out. Rallying has its own breed of followers who are seldom disappointed with all the thrills and spills, as Rob Gillman would tell you, but more on that later. Friday night saw two tight stages of 18km each with drivers having to adjust their handbrake tensions and squinting hard if their front 31 floodlights were not sufficient. Friday night's stages utilised Killarney's racing circuit as well as service roads. Starting off the stock-car pit area, through turn 3 towards turn 4, a 180-degree turn back, through the service road and up turn 1 before a kink right followed by kink left where I was almost knocked over and then left through the slipway onto turn 4. Sounds simple? Well now drivers had to cut off turn 4 through the gates onto the service road and parking ring heading towards the clubhouse. One mistake here could see drivers hit poles and other walls which could render them out for the rest of the rally. Once around the clubhouse, they utilised the subway and sweep now seeing them on the back-straight toward turn 5. Round turn 5 and into the pits now heading up the pit straight at well above its usual speed limit into a 90degree right taking to the back of the pits before heading back down the pit area avoiding trees and other obstacles before re-entering the track at turn 5. Here they raced down the main straight before hard on the brakes to cut through 32 issue twelve | urban racr online magazine issue twelve | urban racr online magazine ing, k a e sp tched y l l a c ti ly ma would e r o e Th o evend cars rse at tw ers an he cou time, driv plete te samequal th ings e com y l t c a ex ith all th w dirt proved hazardous as the Golf got out of shape without warning before gaining traction and sending the rear-end in the opposite direction again causing him to broad slide toward and up the sand embankment flipping the car, likely sliding down the embankment again, on its side, luckily without any injuries, but calling it a day for them. The penultimate stage was a special stage, i.e. head–tohead, with the one competitor completing the oval a few times, up through turn 3, through the link used for 8 lap chase events and back up toward the oval, whilst the other competitor started off first completing the 8 lap chase side before entering the oval side. Theoretically speaking, two 33 evenly matched drivers and cars would complete the course at exactly the same time, with all things equal, but in rally, we know that rarely happens. The final stage utilised the main and back straight side of the track again, also a special stage with 2 competitors on the course at the same time, battling each other ending, theoretically, at the same time. This stage saw the marshals even more nervous as their clubhouse was now in direct danger of being hit head-on should a driver under-brake. Both sides of the back pit area was utilised as 2 separate sections of this stage, lucky for us, I was the only noneevent official to be allowed in that area. With Mike Nathan and Derek Jacobs' Mitsubishi Evo turbo not being ready for the event due to engine problems prior, they had entered in Toyota Corolla, claiming overall honours, mainly due to their superlative performance in stage one, giving them a healthy advantage. Etienne Du Toit took second overall of the event, also in a Toyota Corolla. On a humorous side, I heard Mike mentioning the gears were not to his satisfaction on the Friday night, only to realise it was not the sequential gearbox found in his Evo, and subsequently had to use clutch. If this event was not so taxing on a car, I would have started planning the building of a car for the next all tar rally scheduled for later this year. Keep an eye out in Urban RacR Magazine to find out the specifics. PIX 34 issue twelve | urban racr online magazine issue twelve | urban racr online magazine With a balance of power, boost and stiff suspensions coupled to strict racing manoeuvres and drifting spectaculars, this meant the crowd would get their fair share of exhilarating action to witness. All entrants who had been constantly upgrading their cars and driving styles all year in an effort to better their previous year's times and stand that chance at a podium finish had their hopes crushed when Duncan Jepthas and Nashrene Schloss dipped under the oneminute barrier in their Class G VW Golf MkII 2.0 TSI. Duncan had opted for 60KW less power in the hope of better traction on the warm tarmac and it worked. Though not being able to dip under a minute again on their third and final run, their final resulting times were 0.1second faster than that of Izak Van Zyl and Jehan de Jongh's in the DynoTech MkII Turbo Golf. It was a close race between these September saw the second annual instalment of the Worcester Mill Mall Gymkhana. Last year's event was a great success; see Urban RacR Magazine Online Issue 3, so naturally we packed up our camera equipment and headed out to Worcester in anticipation for some tight chassis-straining, seat breaking, (sorry Lindsey - I couldn't resist throwing that in) gymkhana action. Though still in the holy month of Ramadaan, this year's event promised to be just as big an event with close onto 75 entrants. 35 36 issue twelve | urban racr online magazine issue twelve | urban racr online magazine PIX two teams throughout the day along with local entrant “Vinnige” Fanie and Melanie Du Toit in their red three–wheeling Class A Mazda 2.0 16V Rustler LDV who due to a momentary lapse in concentration on his final run had to accept third overall. Fanie's ex-Class A Mazda 323 EGi 2.0 16V finished in fourth place under the hands of 37 Morne Roux and Monica Robertse. Morne had subsequently also won Most Improved Driver of the Day. It may not be his dream ride, an Ae86, but if the internet chatter is anything to go by he is warming up to his new project Roku Ichi Ma61 Celica Supra. The problem with the internet is that every second person on it has a project car to play with. And THAT just colours me ALL shades of jealous. I can't even watch motor racing without getting antsy… But after a little saving and a LOT of luck destiny finally intervened. Project Roku Ichi starts now. 47 “Brup brup brup brup…” Let's forget about the sellotape holding the driver side handle in place “Brup brup brup brup…” and pretend the water doesn't get in when it rain (but it does) “Brup brup brup brup…” and that she's 26 years old, has a miscoloured boot hatch and has the least Japanese set of rims EVAR seen on it “Brup brup brup brup…” and instead focus on the good. That means booting the loud pedal and letting the brup brup turn in to a full blown roar! Sonorous and rough – the 2.8 litre still makes a great sound and for a moment it reminds me that I didn't buy a lemon, instead a classic piece of Japanese motoring history… and plus it's rear wheel drive. The '1983 Toyota Celica Supra 2.8' is its name, and it's a relatively rare animal in South Africa. Chassis code MA61, Roku Ichi. How much of a nerd am I right now? And so begins my long lusting track car project – although I do plan to make the car more roadable first. It's going to have to be a slow process though as money comes in, but at this rate I should be fine for a track day filled 2010. First up, roadworthy and getting it registered then I got to do something about that poked exhaust it has (my word it is loud, the bad kind… except at about 4500rpm - THAT I like) and I absolutely gots to get rid of them PORNO alloys.
