foreword from Jim Hudson
Dear Friend,
When Lonnie and I founded the Institute, we had no idea how much this community would embrace our
vision. We are grateful for the generous individuals, families, foundations and corporations who have
supported this organization philanthropically, strengthening our efforts to improve human health and
quality of life by bridging the gap between discovery and application.
Since opening HudsonAlpha in 2008, we have made significant strides in our studies of disease through
translational research and in our efforts to build a biotech workforce while growing a biotech hub in
Huntsville, Alabama. Such remarkable progress cannot be attributed to a single organization or individual.
As a nonprofit founded on the spirit of collaboration, you, as a donor, share in the success and celebration
of the advancements made by our scientists. Thank you for making a difference through HudsonAlpha.
This organization was founded at an exciting time. Lonnie and I seized a special moment in history — after
the completion of the first human genome sequence — when we envisioned the Institute. Clarity and
courage will be needed to keep reaching for those special moments. We hope you will join us as we continue to reach for those special moments. Together we will create a better, healthier world.
With gratitude,
volunteers lend a helping hand
HudsonAlpha is grateful for volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure 2014 programs and events were
as successful as possible. For the first time, HudsonAlpha also trained a small group of volunteers as
docents to meet a growing demand for tours. These men and women underwent extensive training in each of
our three mission areas so they could lead group and public tours.

research highlights from 2014:
HudsonAlpha furthered its position as a global leader in genomics by quadrupling its sequencing capacity.
With a major technology upgrade, faculty investigators are able to work more quickly and efficiently. The
Illumina HiSeq X Ten system produces data that can reveal the genetic causes of inherited diseases and
advance our understanding of complex disorders. This technology will make it possible for HudsonAlpha to
offer personal genomic analysis in 2015.
Scientists provided valuable answers to families struggling with childhood genetic disorders. While researchers
expect to work with 500 families over the project’s five-year span, nearly 100 families have already received
results through HudsonAlpha’s pediatric genomics program. This effort is designed to identify root genetic
causes in children with unexplained delays and disorders, directly impacting local families. Proceeds from
the annual Double Helix Dash support this project. We thank everyone who participated in 2014’s run.
Researchers made international health headlines with a major discovery in kidney cancer, a disease that
claims the lives of an estimated 9,000 men and 5,000 women every year. In an effort funded in large part by
the Daniel Foundation, HudsonAlpha scientists discovered new biomarkers that are very strong predictors of
renal cell carcinoma, the most common type of kidney cancer in adults.
HudsonAlpha researchers joined the largest whole genome sequencing study funded to date, seeking to
better understand bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Scientists from HudsonAlpha and collaborating
institutions will work together to deeply sequence the genomes of 10,000 people of European, Hispanic and
African-American origin.
HudsonAlpha and collaborators at Duke University completed the nation’s largest study on Amyotrophic
Lateral Sclerosis. They sequenced the genomes of nearly 1,000 patients in order to better understand the
genetic causes of ALS, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease.
In April, the Spring Benefit raised more than $180,000 for immunogenomics research at HudsonAlpha. The
lab began sequencing samples in autoimmune disorders, such as lupus, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid
arthritis. Thank you to all who attended, and especially our sponsors, including the Smith Family Foundation,
ADTRAN, Merrill Lynch and Bradley Arant.
HudsonAlpha formalized its collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, creating the
UAB-HudsonAlpha Center for Genomic Medicine to accelerate discoveries in genomics into clinical practice.
HudsonAlpha also formalized a partnership with UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, creating a cancer
research consortium pioneering efforts to diagnose, treat and care for patients and families affected by cancer.
education
YOUR PASSION FOR HUDSONALPHA’S EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS HELPED DR. NEIL LAMB AND HIS
DYNAMIC TEAM REACH AN UNPRECEDENTED 406,195 STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND LIFELONG LEARNERS DURING
THE 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR. HudsonAlpha is inspiring students, engaging teachers, creating a biotech-literate
community and building tomorrow’s biotech workforce.
education highlights from 2014:
The four-week HudsonAlpha Biotech Academy once again provided an opportunity for one student from each
of the 14 public high schools in the Huntsville City, Madison City and Madison County school systems with
a unique introduction to the field of biotechnology. This program was made possible through the generous
support of HudsonAlpha supporter Jean Wessel Templeton.
Dr. and Mrs. Tony Chan contributed $50,000 to the “Chan Training Lab.” This space is vital to HudsonAlpha’s
efforts to train the future workforce, giving students hands-on lab experiences in a state-of-the-art
laboratory environment.
Educational Outreach offered the first Summer Short Course, allowing high school students to delve into one
of the newest scientific fields, synthetic biology. Described as the intersection of engineering and biology,
synthetic biology has a promising future focused on solving some of the world’s biggest challenges in health,
energy and agriculture. CAS Cares generously provided funding for students to support this program.
In May, the Educational Outreach team launched “Touching Triton,” an online educational activity that uses
a game-like virtual environment. Touching Triton helps students gain a more in-depth understanding of the
risks of common complex diseases, like colon cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Lockheed Martin has been
a significant sponsor of this project.
Educational Outreach partnered with the North Alabama Center for Educational Excellence to create the
Launching Aspiring Biotechnology Scientists (LABS) after school program. LABS teaches underrepresented
high school students essential skills and knowledge for careers in science, technology, engineering and
mathematics. Thanks to Renasant Bank for supporting this program.
Science Saturdays and “Science for Me, too!” are new educational outreach programs that provide lab-based,
hands-on science activities for African American middle school students. Wells Fargo has designated funding
toward these efforts.
Twenty-six students participated in the BioTrain Internship program. HudsonAlpha’s competitive program
delivers meaningful experiences with career appropriate laboratory training and unparalleled
professional networking opportunities. George and Shirley McCrary have generously endowed one of
the Biotrain positions.
In commemoration of DNA Day, students representing more than 20 schools in Alabama interacted via web
cams with scientists, entrepreneurs and educators in the first-ever HudsonAlpha “Gene Chat.” DNA Day
is celebrated April 25 of each year to commemorate the 1953 discovery of DNA’s double helix structure
by James Watson and Francis Crick. It also recognizes the April 2003 completion of the Human Genome Project.
Our popular Biotech Series filled up in record time. Biotech 101, held every September and sponsored by
ServisFirst Bank, filled to its 275-person capacity within 24 hours. Those who complete Biotech 101 are
invited to participate in Biotech 201. Last year’s 201 series filled to capacity 45 minutes after online
registration opened. The 2014 course focused on the microbiome and cancer.

Dedication of the
“Chan Training Lab”
enterprise
As HudsonAlpha’s research and educational outreach efforts expanded, so did our economic development plans.
WE CONTINUED TO DEVELOP THE INSTITUTE’S 152-ACRE BIOTECH CAMPUS AND FOSTER BIO-ENTREPRENEURSHIP.
Twenty-seven private, for-profit businesses were operating within the Institute or on the campus by year-end.
enterprise highlights from 2014:
Diatherix, one of HudsonAlpha’s original associate companies, took its diagnostic technology overseas,
partnering with a firm in Abu Dhabi to provide testing for physicians in more than a dozen neighboring countries.
Diatherix also experienced a 44 percent increase in samples processed. The diagnostic firm tests for parasites,
yeast, viruses and bacteria, providing fast, accurate and often lifesaving results.
The HudsonAlpha-UAH Entrepreneurship Collaboration was established to benefit both institutions as we
strengthen businesses and build the life science workforce in Huntsville and throughout North Alabama.
In June, HudsonAlpha associate company EGEN was acquired by Celsion Corporation. The two merged to
form Celsion-EGEN and signed a definitive asset purchase agreement in which Celsion acquired substantially
all of EGEN’s assets in exchange for cash and shares of Celsion totaling $14 million.
Associate company Conversant Bio was recognized for Outstanding Product or Service by the Economic
Development Partnership of Alabama. Conversant was noted for exceeding the standards for developing
and producing an innovative product, for recognizing a need in the market for bio-specimen procurement
that quickly provides quality tissue and blood samples to researchers, and for developing an innovative
business solution.
In September, the FDA approved the pain therapy drug, Movantik, which was created in 2000 by Serina
Therapeutics co-founder Mike Bentley, Ph.D., and Chief Operations Officer Tacey Viegas, Ph.D. The drug is
expected to generate $1 billion in revenues each year.
In June, CFD Research Corporation was awarded 16 research and development contracts that totaled
$6 million, contributing to a strong economic outlook for North Alabama. CFDRC works to understand
complex physical phenomena related to defense systems, protecting soldiers, reducing risks, propulsion
coupling effects and combustion systems.
noteworthy:
On September 11, 2014, President Richard Myers joined directors of top federal health research agencies in a national
forum to discuss the state of medical research today and the need to do more to make progress on a number of key health
issues. At the National Health Research Forum, sponsored by Research!America, in Washington D.C., Myers spoke about
the future of medical and health research over the next decade and what it will take to achieve results. Myers was part of
a panel of national health leaders, including National Science Foundation Director France Cordova and American Cancer
Society CEO John Seffrin.
In October, HudsonAlpha co-founder Jim Hudson was among five inductees into the
Alabama Academy of Honor. Hudson’s fellow honorees included Apple CEO Tim Cook,
Alabama football coach Nick Saban and U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions.
In September, HudsonAlpha co-founder Lonnie McMillian received the first Lifetime
Achievement Award from the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama. McMillian
was cited for a career of innovation and success that has helped Alabama progress and
prepare for future growth. McMillian’s daughters, Sue Whitehead and Emily Robertson,
accepted the award on his behalf.

breakthrough breast cancer
In November, 1,000 supporters turned out to help raise
awareness and critical research funds at the annual
Tie the Ribbons luncheon.
thank you to everyone
who made these accomplishments in 2014 possible.
Proceeds from the event, donations from our generous sponsors,
including Intergraph and First Commercial Bank, major
contributions to the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Fund and a
matching gift from the Lonnie McMillian Inspiring Excellence
fund, totaled more than $500,000. The sold-out crowd heard
from renowned geneticist Dr. Mary-Claire King, the scientist
who discovered the BRCA1 gene, which predicts hereditary
breast and ovarian cancer. Dr. King’s breakthrough has since
saved thousands of lives by giving women the power to know if
they carry the BRCA1 gene mutation.
Thanks to these funds, we are now searching for a new cancer
genomics Faculty Investigator dedicated to finding the next
major breakthrough in breast and ovarian cancer. The search
is on for this new, world-class faculty investigator. STAY TUNED.

At the end of Dr. King’s inspirational address, she issued a challenge to HudsonAlpha and the City of Huntsville
to lead the effort in testing young women for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Dr. King presented the Institute
with a $5,000 donation to get the pilot project started. HudsonAlpha scientists are working with local leaders,
community members and area physicians to structure this first-of-its-kind project which will be launched
in 2015.
One dedicated scientist + resources + time = lifesaving discovery.
