Bergheim
Bergheim is one of the rare Alsace villages to have preserved almost all
of its fortifications (built in 1311) and represents one of the best examples
of a fortified medieval town in Alsace; inside Bergheim you will find the
closely packed houses of wine growers (dating from the 15th to the 17th
century), the old synagogue, a fountain with the village’s coat of arms…
Hunawihr
Surrounded by vines, Hunawihr, a village of wine producers
with traditional half-timbered houses, is listed among the
“Most Beautiful Villages in France”. Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur
Church (15th - 16th century), surrounded by a fortified cemetery, presents an exceptional and well-preserved environment.
Ribeauvillé
Visit the picturesque streets of Ribeauvillé under the benevolent
eye of the ruins of the three castles that sit majestically above
the town; there are numerous architectural treasures to discover:
houses dating from the 15th to the 18th century, medieval fortifications and defensive towers, such as the 13th century “Tour des
Bouchers” (Butchers’ Tower), the 18th century town hall and its remarkable collection of silver hanaps (drinking cups) and squares
decorated with Renaissance style fountains…
Riquewihr
This magnificent medieval town, listed among the “Most
Beautiful Villages in France”, should not be missed. This city/
museum “open to the skies” has not changed in centuries:
behind the medieval ramparts the town’s perfectly preserved
half-timbered houses dating from the 15th to the 18th century,
a guard tower built in 1291 (the Dolder), and a high gateway
that was built in the 13th century and then modified in the
15th century, form an exceptional architectural ensemble.
The Alsace house reaches its most perfect expression in
Riquewihr, offering numerous variations of carved halftimbers, oriel windows and internal courtyards with old wells
and fountains.

Colmar
The charm of Colmar lies in the canals in the
Little Venice district, its half-timbered houses, its historic centre…
all reflecting the Alsace way of life.
Strasbourg
Capital of Alsace and administrative centre for Europe, Strasbourg
offers visitors an exceptional heritage both in terms of styles and
periods: Strasbourg Cathedral (a gothic masterpiece), the medieval
districts around the cathedral, the Petite France district where you can stroll along the delightful narrow
streets and canals, the old aristocratic district around the Place Broglie…
Castle Haut-Kœnigsbourg
The visit to the Castle Haut-Koenigsbourg, a 270 m long fortress perched at an altitude of nearly 800 metres and overlooking the Alsace
plain, offers a return to the world of the Middle Ages as you explore
the imposing castle, the only one of its kind in France, which was restored by William II in the style of the late 15th century.
Mount Sainte-Odile
Superbly located on a site that has been occupied since prehistoric
times (with a pagan wall that was built in approximately 1000 BC), the
convent (consisting of a church and several chapels), founded by saint Odile (who became the Patron
Saint of Alsace) sits on the top of Mount Sainte-Odile, at an altitude of 763 m.
Under the guidance of Odile, the convent’s spiritual influence developed enormously and, after her death
in 720, became a centre for Christianity and remains a pilgrim destination.
Visit this highly spiritual location and experience the site’s saintly atmosphere and the mystery of the
pagan wall, or simply enjoy the extraordinary panoramic view on the Alsace plain.
Col du Linge
Battlefield in the 1914-1918 war, the Col du Linge was the scene of
particularly violent clashes between June and October 1915, during
which 17,000 French and German soldiers lost their lives.
The well preserved German defence system, the remains of the
French trenches and the Linge Memorial Museum (which contains
weapons, soldiers’ personal objects, models of the battlefield and a
video montage of period photographs…) recreate the atmosphere
of the period and offer a moving reminder of the horrors of the “War
of the Trenches”.
Consult the Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr region Tourist Office to draw up
your own programme on the basis of the lengths of the tours and locations
of the sites that you have chosen.
