The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP
Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I, Lord.” This “Here
am I” is Jeremiah’s great prophetic response to God’s call. But today’s story of Jeremiah and the refrain “Lord, come
to my aid!” remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by
keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting
at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak preview” of a baptism that would not be as
wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words
from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of
daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

READINGS AND QUESTION OF THE WEEK FOR August 18, 2013
TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
GOSPEL:
Lk 12:49-53
ADULTS:
When has taking a strong stand on a moral issue created division rather than
healing in the short term?
CHILDREN: Is it important to do the right thing even if others are angry as a result?
TEACHERS NEEDED FOR FALL CLASSES
We need the following teachers for R. E. classes: Saturday— 2nd grade and Older Communion and
Wednesday evening, Junior High—8th grade. Please call 252-6950 for further information and to
volunteer.
CHILDREN’S BIBLES
I am happy to tell you that we now have children’s Bibles for sale in our R. E. office. These Bibles contain
the entire Old and New Testaments. They have very colorful illustrations of different Bible stories. There
are 2000 pages within this Bible with helpful hints for parents to talk with their children about the stories.
The cost is $20.00 (cash or check only, please.) Don’t hesitate—call today 662 252-6950 or come into
our office.
FAMILIES ON HOME STUDY
Don’t forget to make an appointment for your child’s interview before fall classes begin. The interview
generally lasts twenty minutes and is the last step before going on to the next class.
Please call 252-6950 to set up your appointment.
VIRTUS SEXUAL PREDATOR AWARENESS WORKSHOP
If you volunteer with or around children/youth and have never taken this workshop or if you need to
recertify in this class, it will be given Friday, August 23 at 6:30 p.m. The class is three hours and will be
held in Renehan hall. You must call 252-6950 to register.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SCHEDULING LETTER
The class scheduling letters for students in grades one-eighth will be mailed the end of August. If you
haven’t received your letter by September 1, please call 252-6950 to inquire about the information.
Not Your Ordinary Bible Study…...
Our Little Rock Scripture study will be adding a new feature to its study this August.
On Thursday evening, August 22nd at 7pm in Renehan Hall, we will be reading
Rediscovering Catholicism by Matthew Kelly. This book was our Christmas gift last
year from Fr. Olin and it is truly one that should be opened and read if not shared with
everyone you know! If you do not have the book, and would like to get a copy to join us in this
study, the cost is $3 per book. After this 6 week course, we will begin our Scripture study on the
Gospel of Matthew! The cost of this study is $15 for the materials.
We also are offering the same study on Wednesday mornings, beginning August 21st at 9:30am.
Since that group already read, Rediscovering Catholicism, we will begin with the book, Rhythm of
Life by Matthew Kelly. You can purchase that book on your own or call me and I will purchase
multiple copies together at $10 per book. Let me know ASAP if you want to join us. After this study,
we will continue with our scripture study on the Gospel of Matthew as well. We are called to be a
light to the world. Slow down and take the time to be that light.

Pope Francis Encourages
Service to Others
During the recent World Youth Days in Brazil,
Pope Francis spoke to the crowd about spreading
their faith to the “fringes of society, even to those
who seems farthest away, most indifferent.”
Volunteering with Family Promise SCV is a perfect
opportunity to live our faith in the way that Pope
Francis encourages us to do so. The week of August
21st, St. Clare will be assisting Bouquet Canyon
Church in hosting families who are without homes of
their own and depending on the support and
generosity of people like you.
If you can help provide hospitality or meals August
21st through August 24th, please contact Karen
Mapes @(661) 251-3211 or at:

For information on Family Promise visit their website

(many people call the parish office around the holidays
wanting to know if we know of a place they and their
families could work at a soup kitchen — or some way
they could feed the homeless. Don’t wait
until the holidays—here is your chance to
prepare a meal and provide hope and
comfort to a homeless family right here in
Santa Clarita.)
OCCUPANCY
The value of life does not depend upon
the place we occupy. It depends upon how we
occupy that place.
—St. Thérèse of Lisieux
OCUPACIÓN
El valor de la vida no depende del lugar
que ocupemos. Depende de cómo ocupemos ese
lugar.
