his will be our second visit to the Corner Pub & Grill. Our snowed-out 2013 dinner meeting
was held there. The Corner Pub & Grill is just that, a Pub with Pub type food, hot and cold
sandwiches, wraps, salads and pizza, along with a cold beer. So bring your favorite drinking
stein along! We will have a private room with table space for display and sale items. Upon
arrival, time will available to order a drink and visit awhile. Food orders will be taken at that
time. A business meeting will be called to order, followed by our programs. Food will be served
around 4:30.

Directions from I-270, take Dougherty Ferry Road west to the intersection with Big Bend Road,
go through the intersection and immediately turn right into the strip mall. The Corner Pub &
Grill will be to your left. There is abundant parking so minimal walking is required. ■

Programs will include showing some regimental stein go-alongs presented by Steve Hoosack
and Rich Hoffman. Members are also asked to bring in a favorite stein to be set out for display
during the afternoon. A variety of materials and techniques used in the making of steins would
be interesting and educational.
From the desk of your Prez!
Hi all Steiner’s! As the year 2014 draws to a close we can say that our Steiner’s Club has had a
reasonably good year. Our treasury has remained stable under Steve’s watchful eye, splendid
newsletters by Ron, our membership was enhanced by one, we had four interesting meetings, put
on or attended three shows of which at the Kress Farm event was a real bummer, and enjoyed an
out-state-dinner meeting, an event we may try again in a year or so. On the flip side of the coin,
one of our esteemed members, Bill Mitchell, lost his wonderful wife Lillian, for whom we pray
that she may rest in peace.
James Steele, our AB Stein Collector (or perhaps more definitive, significant accumulator) will
be undergoing multiple shoulder re-constructive surgery during the coming six months. This
malady is probably directly to the vast number of AB steins Jim has collected, handled and
shelved during the past decade, so just perhaps collecting AB steins might be considered
“hazardous to one’s health!” However, we do pray for successful medical treatment and a speedy
return of his health. Also, Jim did mention to me that he has expanded his huge collection to
include “beer tap handles” of which he already has a dozen or so. Jim would like to hear from
others with a similar interest in these “go-along” collectables.
Chatted briefly with Roland Wetzel this evening and he seemed quite chipper over the phone.
He told me that at the present time they have his illness under control and that he is getting out
and about. But life is a struggle and that’s just the way it is, so he is doing the best he can.
Our annual Stein Show & Sale was again a moderate success, with public attendance down a bit
from last year. Ted took care of the meeting room reservations, Martin, Steve and Ted placed
advertisements in local papers and hand delivered flyers to various shops and antique malls.
A ”door survey” of show attendees indicated that they worked, but some better than others. We
did have a dozen attendees use the services of our resident “appraiser” Martin Dietrich, but
mostly they had German tourist grade Andenken steins, or more so, attractive AB steins.
However, one gentleman did bring in a family heirloom for appraisal, a beautiful large two liter
ABC Brewery stein which Martin appraised at a very significant value.
Of particular interest to me was that one visitor attended because of our stein display at the
Weber Branch Library. We have been placing a display there for the past six or eight years.
Unfortunately, their interest was only in visiting the show and not in joining our club. To prove
that interest in stein collecting does not diminish with age, our senior member Leonard Schenk
was in attendance and swapped steins and money with Steve Hoosack both of whom were happy
with their new acquisition. Several others also purchased steins off Leonard’s table.

Our annual holiday dinner meeting will be at the Corner Pub & Grill, January 10th from 2:00
until 6:00 P.M. and will feature a vignette of mini presentations on various subjects, along with
general club business. This should be a splendid meeting, with conversation and camaraderie par
excellence, interesting discussions and the possibility of an excellent dinner. Hope to see you all

On the more positive side, we did glean one new member, Patrick H. Goertzen of Creve Coeur,
a studious collector who has attended our shows in the recent past and was well known to Martin
as the two have occasionally met before at local auctions. So, be sure to welcome Patrick when
you meet him at our meetings.

greeted visitors at the door and welcomed
visitors to our annual show and sale. Martin
Dietrich was once again our club appraiser.
Eleven Steiners were in attendance with table
displays of their stein interests along with
selections of steins for sale. The number of
visitors was down from last year, as was the
number of club members in attendance.
However many visitors stuck around to visit and
ask questions, which was good. A few steins
exchanged hands between members and several
others were sold to visitors. The most significant
stein to walk in was a rare 2 liter ABC stein. It
was a family keepsake, so it left with its owner.

SOME BACKGROUND ON OUR CURRENT OFFICERS:

Terms of office are for two years. Elections are held every odd year during our
annual dinner meeting.

Karl Schmitt volunteered and was elected president as of 2012 when then
president Ted Ball needed to step down as president mid-term (2011-2012).

Steve Hoosack was elected treasurer in 2007 (2007-2008) replacing Roger
Kirkbride.

Ron Hartmann was elected secretary in 2007(2007-2008) replacing Steve
Hoosack.

The office of vice president of programs has been vacant since the end of
2013. This is an office that needs to be filled A.S.A.P.

Ted Ball was elected VP Membership in 2013, replacing Bill Edwards.

Those holding the positions of newsletter editor, club librarian
and SCI representation are appointees and not officers.
I Remember Daddy
I come from a brewery family! We lived near two breweries. My dad worked for Griesedieck
Brothers Brewery which eventually was taken over by Falstaff Brewery. He could walk to work.
Anheuser-Busch was also nearby. We could actually smell the “Hops” in the neighborhood!
Eventually our family made several moves. We finally moved to South St. Louis in the Oakhill
neighborhood. I have a memory of the house on Parker, which was very special to my Dad. It
was at this house, that he was able to “finish” the basement. A favorite part of this was the bar
that he built. Dad had many glasses and other memorabilia that he used to decorate the shelves
he created behind the bar. One of the special things that I remember is the “Falstaff” collectible
pictured below. It had a place of honor behind the bar. It is really unusual, in that on one side
beer (sand) is being drawn from the keg. When you turn it to the other side, beer (sand) is being
enjoyed by Sir John Falstaff!

trademark & logo. Lemp thought the Shakespearean character of Sir John Falstaff
represented the more positive social aspects of drinking, rather than the
destructive consequences of over consumption emphasized by prohibitionists. Sir
John was a "man's man" who's philosophy was to "eat drink & be merry" and his
sense of good fun was tempered by an exceptional intellect According to the
company's profile, Sir John was beset by no frustrations, fears, or problems of
protocol. ■

We had many happy family parties down in “The Hole,” which is the name my Dad gave his
special place. We all enjoyed those parties. We also enjoyed watching Sir John Falstaff drink his

Cherokee Brewery Company
Here you see another
interesting trade card
from an old local brewery,
the Cherokee Brewery
established in 1866 by
the Meier brothers. It
was located at Iowa
Avenue and Cherokee
street.
The brewery developed
an advertising program,
part of which was this
handsome
salt-glazed
stein (technically a mug)
produced in 1890 for
consumers. These mugs
depicting the brewery’s “Native American Indian with
bow and arrow” can sometimes be found locally, if one is lucky.
Cherokee Brewery Company has a colorful history which is thoroughly covered in
Henry Herbst’s book, “St. Louis Brews” and online at antiqueadvertisingexpert.com.
Local antique treasures like this are still to be found, keep your eyes open! ■
