Campaign for Expansion of a Fourth Ronald McDonald House &

In the Medical Center
San Antonio’s pediatric population is growing. Many San Antonio hospitals that serve children have also increased its patient services and facilities. The transformation and construction of Children’s Hospital of San Antonio began in late August 2012. They are adding new pediatric beds and a host of pediatric medical specialities. The structure housing
the Ronald McDonald House at Children’s Hospital was demolished as part of the hospital expansion and upgrade and now, we need to rebuild and expand to a sixteen bedroom
Home to meet the current demand.
In addition, with the growth of the Medical Center pediatric services, outpatient facilities and clinics the demand for additional Ronald McDonald House services in the Medical
Center are in demand. We have been running at a full capacity and turning away families due to the lack of space.
Plans for the two new Houses increase capacity of the current services to the community. With the additional space, the Houses will:
• Expand from 50 to 77 bedrooms and will enable the House to accommodate both the current priority given to hematology/oncology families, while having additional lodging
available for outpatient, cardiac, critical care, trauma, transplants and other patients.
• Provide accommodations for families whose children need pre-op and post-op treatments;
• Serve as a day-use facility for families who may not have an overnight room.
To address this situation we are in a Capital Campaign mode, reaching out to our community to partner in this project. With your help we can make a difference in the lives of these
special children and their families to aleviate a little of the stress, knowing they have a home-away-from-home they can come to.

Many years ago, I was looking for the definition of the word “Service” and found this:
Service: “the action of helping or doing work for someone”.
This simplistic view of what serving is stuck with me. Mainly what stood out for me was that it
does not include an expectation of self benefit or reward. It’s not about me.
These days, I see how “serving others” has become an entry in someone’s resume, a competition
for service hours or another accomplishment in someone’s personal “To Do” list. As a society, we
have lost the main subject of the reason for serving. We are supposed TO SERVE because we
want to HELP someone not ourselves. Giving assistance, time, or money should have a meaning or
a purpose to those we’re helping. Surely, we can have a sense of fulfillment from it but this should
not be the driving reason for serving someone else.
Our society is in need of “Real Service” everyday. From teaching a kid how to read to giving
a blanket to a homeless person, each one of us can look to a specific mission and connect with
it. Real Service is accomplished when at least one person has been helped by our efforts. Again,
someone else, not us. Yet, I keep hearing people talk about how many service hours they’ve done or
how many meals they’ve provided. Real Service is uninterested and uncompromised. Yes, our lives
are better from this (at least spiritually) but the question is: “Is/are the life or lives of the person
or persons you served better?”.

Share Your Heart Campaign
During the month of January thru February students buy hearts for
$ .25 and decorate the school halls with these hearts. All proceeds collected go the our local Ronald McDonald Houses. The success of this
program depends upon each volunteer, each school, each student, making
a difference one quarter at a time! Schools wishing to participate in this

Now, service for me takes a deeper meaning when it’s about helping families and children. Through
the work of the Ronald McDonald Charities, I have witnessed how service helps others. We are
blessed with small things everyday; a great sunny day, your car starting on a cold day, or simply waking up next to the people you love. The work done at the Ronald McDonald Charities truly helps
families going through difficult times accomplish these little blessings everyday. Having a home to
go to after seeing your child being treated for a critical illness is a bigger blessing that most people
take for granted. As a parent, I can only imagine the anguish of being in that position. One day
of smiles, a warm meal, or mainly a quiet place to pray are some of these blessings that we can
provide those families that stay at Ronald McDonald House. But, most importantly, the biggest
service given to them is the opportunity of being together when they are away from their homes.
I am truly blessed by being allowed to be part of the Ronald McDonald House Charities Mission.
The meaning of service is undeniably felt and lived here everyday.

Capital Campaign Coordinator
In October of 2013 I returned to the Ronald McDonald House. It is my honor
that Ronald McDonald House Charities has selected me to serve as the Capital
Campaign Coordinator. I have served as president of the Ronald McDonald
House Charities Board and also as president of the Friends organization and have
volunteered since 1985.
If you haven’t heard, we are going to build a 4th Ronald McDonald House on Sid
Katz two doors down from our current home. I am currently raising funds to build
our 21 bedroom home complete with a transplant wing. Land has been kindly
donated by the San Antonio Medical Foundation and plans are underway. In
addition, we must rebuild CHOSA (Children’s Hospital of San Antonio). Due to
expansion and remodeling, we will be starting over and building a 16 bedroom
home. Nothing ever slows down around here!

will be The Old San Francisco Steakhouse at 10223 Sahara
Drive. You remember the swinging gals and blocks of cheese?
Well, take a stroll down memory lane and reminisce as you
join us for Chair-ity on Thursday, July 17th, 7:00 p.m. The
place is unbelievable just like the chairs will be.
Speaking of chairs-please donate or call us if you want to hand
over any unused chairs or tables. Looking for painters, designers, artists and anyone wishing to express their creativity!
We will also be securing auction items, so anyone interested
in donating chairs, items, or their time to this great cause is
deeply appreciated.
And speaking of donation-friends, volunteers and designers
from ASID are interested in joining the fun and expressing
their creativity!

Wonderland came back to San Antonio this October with our second annual Mommy, Me, Daddy, and Beanie Baby
Tea event! The whimsical ambiance of the Gazebo on the grounds of beautiful Los Patios served as a perfect back
drop for our fairytale inspired event! Children of all ages were once again greeted by the Queen of Hearts, Alice,
Mad Hatter, the Cheshire cat, the playing card King and Queen, White Rabbit, and our new friend, Tea Pot! With
the overwhelming success and excitement of this event in San Antonio, we decided to share the fun with our friends
in Laredo, TX! The picturesque Laredo Country Club was the perfect setting with beautiful views and plenty of
space for all of the activities. Our guests dined on delicious sandwiches and desserts while being entertained by a
fashion show with winter styles from Dillard’s, photo booths, face painting, temporary tattoos, a craft area, and photos with the characters. We also had a silent auction with some lovely items and door prizes. Each guest got to take
home a tea cup and saucer with a Beanie Baby inside of it as a party favor. We would like to thank everyone who
sponsored and attended these events. We appreciate your support and hope to see you all again next year!

From repairing busted pipes to replacing broken windows, A/C repairs to repairing holes in
our walls, hanging doors to hammering nails, laying flooring to lacquering cabinets, one man
has been there to take on these and many more tasks. I would like to introduce you to our
new Facilities Manager, Jack Bates. He brought decades of knowledge and experience in all
areas of construction and maintenance with him to our homes-away-from-home. He even
transformed our on campus apartment into beautiful new offices! Welcome to our Ronald
McDonald House family, Jack! We are lucky to have you!
Since 1985, San Antonio, TX has had the honor and privilege of serving families with critically ill and injured children through the work we do at the Ronald McDonald Houses. Over
the last 28 years, we have seen the need for the services and support of Ronald McDonald
Houses grow as we continue to battle childhood illness and injury and also to continue our
mission of providing homes-away-from-home for these brave families. Unfortunately, due
to lack of space, we have had to turn away some of these families. It is our number one
objective to fix this issue and we are working hard towards a solution. Let me introduce
you to Leslie Foley, our Campaign Coordinator. Leslie has been a longtime supporter of the
San Antonio Ronald McDonald Houses and has even served as Board President and Friends
Board President. She brings a huge philanthropic heart and unique business experience to the
job. Welcome to our Ronald McDonald House family, Leslie! We are happy to have you on
board!
These children touched our lives for just a brief time.
While they are no longer here with us, they will
remain forever in our hearts.

Sunday, November 3, 2013 wasn’t just any ordinary Sunday. What happens when
you get a clean white shirt add some yellow, purple, orange, blue, and pink? A
tie-dye shirt? Even better, a personalized Color Me Rad T-shirt! On November 3, 2013 San Antonio had its 3rd round of Color Me Rad. Whether it was a
participant’s 1st, 2nd, or 3rd 5K each person completed the fun run with nothing
but smiles and color! Runners went through several color stations that showered
them with colored corn starch to arrive at the party waiting for them at the finish
line. The event ended with music, dancing, laughter, and of course more color!
We would like to thank Color Me Rad for continuing to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio, TX. We would also like to thank all the
wonderful volunteers who helped make this event that much more rad! Let’s get
