Mayor Gloria opens
newly-tarred road
By: Given Sebashe
The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, guided by
its Integrated Development Plan (IDP), officially opened a newly-tarred road in Namakgale on Monday at Mandela village in
Ward 7.
Construction of the road was part of the
municipal's plan to bring services closer to its
residents.
Mayor Gloria Mudunungu said the construction of the road was to assure the residents
that the municipality will, with its little resources, provide services to the people.
"We want to do away with the perception
that the municipality only brings service towards the elections and also to ensure them
that, guided by our IDP, more projects will be
made," said the Mayor.
The Mandela residents thanked the municipality for its effort in ensuring that service
delivery is provided everywhere, irrespective
of wealth.

Nortjé opts for legal representation
Melissa Albert and Given Sebashe
The controversial Renaldo Nortjé, who is
alleged to have swindled investors out of
millions of rands, has opted for a legal representative to defend him in court pending
three criminal cases against him.
Nortjé, who has defended himself in the past,
has attempted to play a cat and mouse game
with the court of law, whilst trying to stall for
time.
Nortjé appeared in court on Monday for trial,
but his new legal representative was not available. His three cases, consisting of crimen
injuria and common assault, were then post-
poned to May 3.
Nortjé has indicated that Magistrate Seemela
of Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court, who was
the presiding magistrate in other cases against
Nortjè, will represent him on the above mentioned date.
Seemela is apparently also a practicing law-
yer and a magistrate, and presided over earlier
cases in which Nortjé walked away scot free.
Questions were raised by many people,
wondering if Seemela will not compromise his
duties as magistrate and if he will not have
influence on the court of law when he defends
Nortjé.

Minister announces
amnesty for firearms
By: Melissa Albert
The Minister of Police announced on November 25, 2009
that a Firearms Amnesty will take
place from January 11 to April 11.
This will enable all firearm owners
(who missed the March 31, 2009
cutoff) to re-license their firearms
or to turn unlicensed or unwanted
firearms in at the police station
without fear of prosecution.
What prompted this declaration
of amnesty is the fact that South
Africa has a significant pool of
illegal firearms in circulation
which contributes to the high rate
of serious and violent firearm-related crimes.
The source of illegal firearms in
circulation ranges from firearms
stolen from members of the public
to illegal firearms smuggled into
the country. The reduction of the
number of firearms in circulation
is an important part of the strategy
to combat these crimes.
The amnesty period should
therefore be seen as an opportunity to do the right thing and to
promote the responsible ownership of firearms.
The government also acknowledges that missing a cutoff date
can often be due to human error
and therefore does not criminalise
the law-abiding citizen. Citizens
must also note that the amnesty
period will not be a given in
future. If you missed the previous
renewal cutoff dates, make use of
this amnesty period and renew
your Firearm Licenses before April
11, 2010.
Security Beyond 2000 provides
the required training and also assists applicants with the completion of their SAPS forms.

The "Buy-a-Brick 4 Life" team would like to extent its gratitude to Coastal Hire Phalaborwa for their generosity.
Coastal Hire Phalaborwa donated a toilet to Khomanani Disabled Centre in Lulekani after their’s was destroyed by
heavy rains. Coastal Hire came to the rescue as it regards sanitation as crucial for a healthy lifestyle. Pieter van der
Merwe (Phalaborwa Round Table), Thandi Sambo (Manager of Khomanani Disabled Centre), Gerald Nkwinika
(member of the centre) and Frederick Ntsenana (Chairman of Brick 4 Life/Entangeni Foundation) happy with the
toilet donated by Coastal Hire Phalaborwa.
Buy-a-Brick 4 Life thanks community
The "Buy-a-Brick 4 Life" project team would
like to thank those that have shown interest in
the Khomanani Disable Centre project and is
lending a hand of assistance to these less
fortunate individuals.
As mentioned in earlier editions of the
Phalaborwa/Hoedspruit Herald, they are still
in the first phase of the project. As for now they
are busy setting up a SMS donation line for your
convenience. They believe that the community’s total support will make this project a
major success.
They are pleading with the business community, mining companies, stakeholders and
individuals to support this project.
As promised, they at Buy-a-Brick 4 Life have
opened a bank account, available to receive
donations now. Individuals and companies
may donate as many bricks as they wish.
Other promotion strategies like online dona-
tions, Facebook and many more will be made
available to the public soon.
The architectural plans for the Khomanani
Disable Centre in Lulekani will be published in
a future edition of the Herald.
The team would like to show their highest
gratitude to all the people that supported them
and to all of those who will be supporting them
in the near future.

More than 500 nurses graduate
By: Given Sebashe
Five hundred and eighty one nurses from
various hospitals and clinics across Limpopo
province graduated last week after successfully completing their training provided by the
Department of Health and Social Development.
The ceremony was held last Friday at Phosphate Community Hall in Namakgale.
The hall was filled with jubilation and
ululations as the graduates, dressed in white,
assembled on stage to receive their
hard-earned certificates in Auxiliary and Enrolled Nursing.
The department initiated Auxiliary Nursing
training as a poverty alleviation programme in
2003 with over 150 students from needy
families.
The nurses who graduated were recruited
through the poverty alleviation programme.
This, according to the departmental spokesperson, Selby Makgotho, was done in an effort
to eradicate poverty in disadvantaged families.
According to the acting MEC for the Department of Health and Social Development,
MEC for Local Government and Housing,
Soviet Lekganyane, the graduates now have
the daunting task of using skills they learnt
through the poverty alleviation programme to
eradicate poverty in the communities they live
in.
Lekganyane commended the nurses for
their dedication and hard work throughout
their training. Lekganyane told the graduates
that they must put into service what they
acquired during their training to ensure that
every citizen gets quality healthcare provided
by the governmental health centres.
One of the Enrolled
Nursing
graduates, Thomas
Rambani (64) from
the Vhembe district,
said he started working at Tshilidzini
Hospital in Venda in
1990 as a nursing assistant.
Rambani,
who is about to go on
pension, thanked the
department for helping him in advancing
his studies. Although
Rambani is going on
pension, he said he is not going to sit on his
hands, but help the community with the skills
he acquired since he started working as a
nurse.
The graduates' representative, auxiliary
nurse Thomas Rakgakalane, thanked the department on behalf all the graduates. "If it was
not for the poverty alleviation programme,
some of us would still be living in poor
household conditions, but because of the
department, we are now able to uplift our
living conditions," said Rakgkalane, who is
working at St Rita Hospital.
Rakgakalane and Dimakatso Nkosi were
awarded
trophies
and certificates for
being the best performing students in
Mopani District Municipality. The department has up to
date trained 1 980
nurses through their
poverty alleviation
programme.
Department
of
Health and Social
Development senior
managers and mayor
of Ba-Phalaborwa,
Gloria Mudunungu,
also attended the ceremony.
Meanwhile, over
50 students from Relebogile Computer
Centre graduated last
Saturday for successfully
completing
their courses.

Party kicks off National Education Campaign
Kingfisher learners had a blast colouring their hair for a good cause
recently. They donated money to cancer research during the national
Cansa Shavathon: Daniella Barnatt, Chanél Kyriacoudes, Rebecca
Desmet, Mary Asubonten and Juliana Scheding.
The Democratic Alliance kicked off their National Educational Campaign last Saturday at Groenskool’s winter sports day.
They supplied all the staff lunches, activists (who volunteered to clean the school grounds) and many dustpans which
where distributed throughout the school property. The aim of this campaign, which will span until the municipal
elections in 2011, is to create a better educational experience for less fortunate learners, enabling them to make the best
of their time at school. The DA Phalaborwa has identified about seven schools in the surrounding areas as schools that
need improvements, such as installing water irrigation and building classrooms. Front: William Mangena and Frank
Maepa. Back: Gareth Fleming, Lilian Maepa, Victor Mangena, Sybrand de Beer, Jan Bothma, Walter Boshana and
Godfrey Mkansi, activists who volunteered to clean up the grounds at the sports day.
Learners take part in Shavathon
Kingfisher took part in the national Cansa Shavathon recently,
and had much fun doing so.
Numerous learners and teachers all took part. They either
shaved off all their hair, or added a
lot of colour to it.
It was all done for a good cause,
as all the money raised by this
event goes towards cancer research and finding a cure.
The school managed to raise R2
337.

Eugene Smit van Letaba se 2de span is hier as
speler aangewys.
SIMPSONS MOTORS, vind Vrydagaand by die
eindstryde in jare.
tweede ronde gelykop teen mekaar gespeel.
volg:
19h00: Bosveld 2 vs Phalaborwa 2
20h00: Bosveld 1 vs Phalaborwa 1
21h00: Letaba 2 vs Louis Trichardt 2
22h00: Letaba 1 vs Louis Trichardt 1
