The Birth of Christ:
A Christmas Cantata
Sunday, Nov 25th • 8:30pm
World-renowned actor Liam Neeson narrates
THE BIRTH OF CHRIST, an original new
orchestral work composed and conducted by
Andrew T. Miller, an international Steinway artist.
It is a musical retelling of the miracle of Christ’s
birth, taken from the Holy Gospels with sacred
text prepared by Father William Treacy.
Performed at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin,
Ireland, the performance features a choir
comprised of half Protestant and half Catholic
vocalists.
Northern Lights: An
Evening with Sissel
and Friends
Saturday, Nov 24th • 5:30pm
Paul McCartney:
The Space
Within Us
Saturday, Nov 24th • 10pm
In late 2005, the British music legend
crossed the United States in 11 weeks
with his record-breaking, sold-out
“US” tour in support of his album
Chaos and Creation in the Backyard.
The career-spanning set includes
Beatles hits “Yesterday,” “Get Back”
and “Please Please Me,” Wings rarity
“Too Many People,” the title track
off his 1997 solo album Flaming Pie,
and 2005 single “Jenny Wren.”
This vibrant new PBS special brings together one
of the brightest talents of the 21st century — the
lovely and popular Sissel — with guest artists
including the acclaimed tenor Jose Carreras in the
17th century Norwegian village of Roros.
Hauntingly beautiful, where little has changed
since 1650, Roros is a UNESCO World Heritage
site. Its quaint architecture and snow-covered
landscape serve as a stunning counterpoint to the
warm and sensual voice of Sissel, who filmed the
special in a landmark stone church that has served
as a beacon for this community since 1784.
“KBTC does a great service
to the community with
quality programming.”

Celtic Woman:
A Christmas Celebration
Saturday, Nov 24th • 7pm
This Christmas celebration — with singers Chloe Agnew, Lisa Kelly,
Meav Ni Mhaolchatha, Orla Fallon and fiddler Mairead Nesbitt —
includes such popular classics as “White Christmas,” “Carol of the
Bells,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “O Holy Night” and “Let it Snow.”
The special was filmed in Dublin’s prestigious Helix Centre, where the
Celtic Woman phenomenon began, and features several original pieces:
“Green the Whole Year Round,” a fiddle solo called “In the Bleak
Midwinter” and “Christmas Pipes.”

Program Highlights
Frontline: Spying on
the Home Front
Thursday, Nov 8th • 9pm
Masterpiece
Theatre: Under
the Greenwood
Tree
Monday, Nov 5th • 8pm
Keeley Hawes (Wives & Daughters) stars
as the apple of everyone’s eye - at least the
men’s - in an enchanting adaptation of
Thomas Hardy’s 19th-century pastoral
romance, UNDER THE
GREENWOOD TREE . Arriving in the
English village of Mellstock at
Christmastime, new schoolteacher Fancy
Day (Hawes) attracts three suitors before
she even unpacks: wealthy landowner
Farmer Shiner (Steve Pemberton, Match
Point ), learned vicar Parson Maybold (Ben
Miles, The Forsyte Saga) and bold wagon
driver Dick Dewy (James Murray, Miss
Marple). Of the three, who will it be? This
captivating love story was one of Hardy’s
earliest and happiest novels, predating
such dark broodings on the same theme
as Far From the Madding Crowd.
FRONTLINE goes behind the mounting
debate over the Bush administration’s domestic
eavesdropping program and the FBI’s disputed
use of national security letters to examine
whether the administration’s domestic war on
terrorism is jeopardizing our civil liberties.
Reporter Hedrick Smith takes viewers inside the
National Security Agency’s domestic surveillance
program to show how it works, presenting
opposing views over whether this program
clashes with Fourth Amendment constitutional
protections of individual privacy. In another
dramatic story, the program shows how the FBI
vacuumed up records on 250,000 ordinary
Americans who chose Las Vegas for their
Christmas-New Year’s holiday, and the
subsequent revelation that the FBI has misused
National Security Letters to gather information.
Nova:The Ghost In Your Genes
Thursday, Nov 15th • 8pm
In a provocative report from the frontiers of biology, NOVA
explores new findings that call into question the long-held belief
that all inherited traits are passed on by our genes. The fastgrowing field of epigenetics investigates hidden influences that
could affect not only our health today but that of our
descendants far into the future. It now seems that our
environment makes small chemical changes to our DNA without
affecting the gene’s overall makeup. To put it another way, epigenetics adds to our DNA
another layer that acts as a control system of “switches.” Experiential factors such as nutrition or
stress may trigger these switches and turn genes on or off. These subtle changes can then be
“remembered” and passed on from generation to generation, altering inherited traits. This means
the lives of our grandparents — the air they breathed, the food they ate, even the things they saw —
could have directly affected us, and that what we do could, in turn, affect our grandchildren. NOVA
explores this fascinating new idea, interviewing top scientists in the field and following what could
be a paradigm shift in the way we think about inheritance and genes.

Nature:
Supersize Crocs
American
Experience:
Test Tube Babies
Wednesday, Nov 21st • 8pm
Tall tales of giant man-eating crocodiles inhabit a
world between fact and fiction. The truth is that
some crocodile species, such as Nile crocs and
American crocs, have been known to exceed 20
feet; the Asian-Pacific saltwater croc has been
recorded to 23 feet. Today these gigantic creatures
are very, very rare, but some of them are still out
there in the wild, with a few held in captivity.
Renowned herpetologist Romulus Whitaker
attempts to ensure the future of the last of these
leviathans.
“You offered me an incredible night
of joy, laughter, tears and romance.”
Friday, Nov 23rd • 8pm
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: TEST
TUBE BABIES, tells the story of doctors,
researchers and
hopeful
couples who
pushed the
limits of
science and
triggered a
technological
revolution in
human
reproduction.
In so doing,
they landed at
the center of a
controversy
whose reverberations continue to this day.
“The battle over in vitro fertilization (IVF)
drew in scientists, social activists, religious
leaders, lawmakers and everyday Americans,”
says producer/director Chana Gazit. “More
than a scientific debate, it was a philosophical
and moral struggle.”

Letter from the General Manager
As we begin the season for giving thanks, enjoying friends and
family and reflecting on what is truly valuable to us, I want to let
you know how much your support means to us and to our
community.
Your membership at KBTC is about much more than television.
It’s about celebrating the positive things in life, exploring your
personal interests, following your curiosity, trying your hand at
Debbie Emond
new ideas or hobbies… It’s about feeling enriched and stimulated
by programs that respect your time and intelligence.
This month we have a variety of shows and specials that do just that:
FRONTLINE’s new season premiere, Cheney’s Law, examines the battle over the
power of the presidency.
In NOVA: A GHOST IN YOUR GENES, experts investigate how a mysterious
“second genome” helps determine our biological fate.
And a local composer, Andrew T. Miller featured on FULL FOCUS last year, is
back with a national concert special narrated by actor Liam Neeson and performed by
members of the Federal Way Chorale.
This is also the time of year when we not only express thanks for the blessings we
have received but also think about sharing with others through charitable gifts. If you’re over
the age of 70, you might consider making a tax free gift from your IRA. For more
information about this limited opportunity contact your financial advisor or KBTC.
As always, thank you for supporting KBTC public television, and I wish you and
your families a very happy Thanksgiving holiday.
Sincerely,
Debbie Emond
