Program Highlights
Masterpiece
New Host Gillian Anderson
Mondays • 8pm (Starting Feb, 18th)
MASTERPIECE THEATRE will introduce a new look, new scheduling, and the
first of three new hosts for 2008. Gillian Anderson, well known to MASTERPIECE
fans for her Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated performance as Lady Dedlock
in Bleak House, will make her debut as the host of
MASTERPIECE CLASSIC on The Complete Jane
Austen, the highly anticipated showcase of all six of
Austen’s novels.
“Gillian is the perfect choice to represent the new
MASTERPIECE CLASSIC,” says executive producer
Rebecca Eaton. “Through Bleak House, we learned just
how passionate she is about the kind of programming
we offer. And she’s incredibly versatile; How many other
actors would choose to go from The X-Files to Charles
Dickens?”
Absolute Zero
Thursday, Feb 7th • 8pm
The two-part special Absolute
Zero presents the epic story of
humanity’s struggle to master extreme
cold. This NOVA special re-creates
groundbreaking discoveries across
four centuries that expanded our
knowledge of low temperatures and
led ultimately to today’s cutting edge
“cold technologies.” Its memorable
characters range from a 17thcentury court magician who rigged
a primitive form of air conditioning
in Westminster Abbey to the original
Captain Birdseye, who invented frozen
food.

Come Walk
In My Shoes
Friday, Feb 8th • 8pm
COME WALK IN MY SHOES provides
a fresh, first-person perspective on the
nonviolent protests that challenged
segregation laws in the South and prompted
the passage of the Voting Rights Act in
1965. During the film, Congressman John
Lewis (D-GA) leads colleagues from the
U.S. House of Representatives and Senate,
religious leaders and others on an emotional
pilgrimage to the “sacred sites” of the civil
rights movement. At each location, Lewis
reflects on his experiences and introduces
the unsung heroes of the marches and
voting challenges of the 1960s.

SOUL OF JUSTICE:
Thelton Henderson’s

Richard Bang’s
Adventures With Purpose: New
Zealand, Quest for Kaitiakitanga
Wednesday, Feb 6th • 9pm
In his second hour-long Adventures With Purpose special,
Richard Bang’s travels to the southernmost reaches of
civilization to uncover New Zealand’s pristine natural beauty,
alluring culture and enigmatic mythology. In RICHARD
BANG’S ADVENTURES WITH PURPOSE: New
Zealand, Quest for Kaitiakitanga, the father
of modern adventure travel traverses the most physically and
climatically diverse landmass in Polynesia in the pursuit of
an age-old Mâori tradition. Bang seeks answers to questions
rooted in indigenous wisdom, hoping to unearth the meaning
and origins of “kaitiakitanga,” the responsibility of human
beings to protect the natural world. Today’s Kiwis believe
the knowledge of the ancients may hold a key to the planet’s
survival.

Jakers! The Adventures of Piggly Winks
Weekdays • 8:30am & 1:30pm
JAKERS! THE ADVENTURES OF PIGGLEY WINKS follows the adventures
of Piggley Winks, a spunky eight-year-old pig, and his friends Dannan the duck
and Ferny the bull on Raloo Farm in Ireland. While the intrepid trio are enjoying
their escapades — “Jakers!” is their oft-used Irish expression of amazement and
delight — American transplant Wiley the Sheep is busy offering wild and woolly
advice to his all-too-sheepish flock. In an
act of “shear” comic genius, renowned
funnyman Mel Brooks voices the role
of Wiley, and Joan Rivers voices Wiley’s
wife, Shirley. Each episode of JAKERS!
ends with two live-action segments. In
Meet the Grandparents, real-life grandparents
and grandchildren talk about their family
history to promote intergenerational
communication; Piggley’s Storyteller Playhouse
explores different ways of telling a story.

The Clinton 12
Saturday, Feb 23rd • 8pm
THE CLINTON 12 captures a pivotal
moment in the American civil rights
movement. Award-winning actor James
Earl Jones narrates the compelling story
of the desegregation of the first public
high school in the South following the
U.S. Supreme Court’s Brown vs. the
Board of Education decision. On
August 27, 1956, a small group of
courageous black students walked
into an all-white high school in
Clinton, TN. and into history.
Seldom-seen archival footage and
first-person accounts from 11
of the original “Clinton 12” and
others involved in this tumultuous
event illuminate the horrors of
segregation in the Jim Crow South.
MySpace. YouTube. Facebook. Friendster.
Nearly every teen in America is on the
Internet every day, socializing with friends
and strangers alike, “trying on” identities
and building a virtual profile of themselves
— one that many kids insist is a more
honest depiction of who they really are
than the person they portray at home or in
school.
In FRONTLINE: GROWING UP
ONLINE, is seen the world of this
cyber-savvy generation through the eyes
of teens and their parents, who often find
themselves on opposite sides of
a new digital divide.
A generation with
a radically different
notion of privacy
and personal space,
today’s adolescents
are grappling with
issues their parents
never had to deal with:
from cyber bullying to
instant “Internet fame”
to the specter of online
sexual predators.

Since introducing this series to PBS viewers
more than 20 years ago, Roy Underhill has
taken his unabashed enthusiasm for traditional
American woodworking to fans week in and
week out. He may be more anachronistic than
anarchistic, but the word “subversive”still fits.
For more than two decades, Roy has shunned
electrical shortcuts. Instead of cutting corners
when cutting corners, he takes the time to
understand and appreciate his
craft. Using brains, brawn and
more than a bit of wit, Roy
turns on his imagination and
turns out practical, whimsical
and, above all, memorable
woodworking projects.

Letter from the General Manager
Dear Friends,
This month, I am pleased to announce a new element to one of
public television’s signature series: Masterpiece Theatre.
For the first time in television history, Masterpiece is bringing
adaptations of all six Austen novels to life for The Complete Jane
Austen beginning February 18.
Debbie Emond
With the Austen films comes a new name and look for the
Masterpiece series. The program will be separated into three “seasons.”
In the winter and spring, Masterpiece Classic will feature beloved period dramas, like The
Complete Jane Austen; in the summer, Masterpiece Mystery! will present the best British
mysteries, from Inspector Lynley to Miss Marple; and, in the fall, Masterpiece Contemporary
will show dramas set in modern times (think Prime Suspect and White Teeth).
You have told us you missed having a host to lead you into the programs. I am delighted
to announce that Gillian Anderson, well known to Masterpiece Theatre fans for her Emmy
and Golden Globe nominated performance as Lady Dedlock in Bleak House, will make her
debut as the host of Masterpiece Classic for The Complete Jane Austen. Two new hosts for
Masterpiece Mystery! and Masterpiece Contemporary will be announced soon - stay tuned!
Masterpiece’s enduring popularity emphatically demonstrates that there is a place in
American television for acting and writing of the highest caliber; that emotions can be more
powerful than explosions; and, that there is an audience for excellence.
Thank you for supporting television that opens our minds, lifts our spirits and encourages
our curiosity.
Sincerely,
Debbie Emond

Based on his book by the same title,
The Ride of Our Lives tells the
story of an extraordinary journey – into
a family’s past and into our hearts and
minds. The Today Show’s Mike Leonard
wanted to take the idea of a family
reunion to a new dimension, and indeed
he did. He took a break from his job
with NBC News, rounded up his 87year-old father, Jack, mother Marge, three
of his grown kids, and a daughter-in-law,
and rented a pair of RVs for a month to
travel the United States.
