receive 2015 end of the year reports, review the budget for 2016 and make
plans for the coming year. This is a meeting that needs all the voices in the
congregation. A team from our Church Council is planning this event which
will include some time to get to know others from the church, learn of the
scope of the ministry of Fairwood Community UMC and maybe get excited
about where God is leading us...maybe even in new directions. If you would
like to help with the meal, set up or clean up - or have some great ideas for this
gathering check with Lisa Burns, our Lay Leader or Kathy Porter, our Council
Chair.

Introducing
Chasing the Wild Goose
Erin Williams
Pastor Joyce O’Connor-Magee
New Preschool Director
As we come into a new year I find
myself saying - its time to get back
to normal. I think I mean Christmas
is over, back to regular hours, take
down the decorations. January brings with it
some more “ordinary” time. Actually I have
never been so sure of what ordinary means.
The New Year also brings with it the season of
Epiphany. It is the time we remember the life of
Jesus. It begins with the story of the coming of
the Wise Men on January 6th. With them the
world comes to worship and give God praise for
the gift of the life and message of Jesus. On
the 2nd Sunday of the month we remember how
Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan
River. In worship we have a chance to
remember our baptism as well. We will reflect
on who we are as the claimed Children of God.
That doesn’t seem ordinary to me!
We then have a lovely three day
weekend that honors The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Hopefully we take a moment to give
thanks for prophetic voices like his that energize
and remind Christians who we are to be in a
world of need. His life was far too short as he
was assassinated when he was only 39. But his
message of hope and racial equality lives on
and is needed now more than ever. Not
ordinary!
On the 4th Sunday of the month we will
gather together as a church to look back and
plan ahead. It takes all of us working together
to be the church in the world. In the midst of
bullying and divisive politics, in a world of the
threat of terrorism around the world and police
violence at home, Christian witness in little and
big ways must be more than ordinary.
This is not the time to be ordinary
Christians. The world need to hear again the
message of the Good News of Jesus - a word of
hope to the poor and God’s justice for the
powerless. It is a time to be extraordinary in
caring for the neighbor near and far. In such a
time as this all Christians need to extra-ordinary
in love in action.
Truly the work of “ordinary” Christians as
outlined by Howard Thurman has begun:
To find the lost, To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner,
To teach the nations, To bring Christ to all,
To make music in the heart.
We are delighted to
welcome our newest staff
member, Erin Williams, who became our Joyful
Heart’s Preschool director on December 7th. We
had been blessed for 7 years with the leadership
of Robin Foster who in November took another
job. Robin will be greatly missed. In the interim
the staff of the preschool - Trista Wilson, Janice
McMorris and Brandi Hetrick kept things running
smoothly. Because of their devotion and abilities
our Preschool is still in business.
Erin comes to us from many years of
working in early childhood education. She has
a BA in Early Childhood Education from CWU.
She also brings a background in Montessori
education. Her educational background includes
organizing and leading classes for adults who
desired to be more involved with their children’s
education. She also led a program for children
ages 5-10 in the area of conflict resolution and
self esteem. Besides all of that she parents
three young adult children! In that capacity she
was involved in the PTSA and served as a PTSA
president. She has served in the community as
a volunteer at Vine Maple Place, transitional
housing for homeless mothers and their children.
Already we have witnessed the special
touches Erin brings - joyful order and
enthusiastic learning. Parents and kids are
already excited about Ms. Erin’s leadership.
Please pop into the Preschool to see the
changes. And if you know of someone looking
for a great faith based, open and accepting
preschool for their child mention us! We do have
a few volunteer positions that would help our
preschool - we have space on the Preschool
Council. Please talk to Cathy Russell if you are
interested. Then the preschool is in real need of
a webmaster - to update and keep the preschool
website current. Please check with Erin if you
are interested in serving in this way.
Again, welcome Erin to our Fairwood
Community UMC and Joyful Hearts Preschool.

What is the Lectionary?
A lectionary is a book or listing that contains a
collection of scripture readings appointed for
Christian or Judaic worship on a given day or
occasion. We follow the Revised Common
Lectionary as do many Christian Churches. On any
given Sunday congregations are looking at the same
scripture. These readings are set up in a three year
pattern, each starting on the First Sunday of Advent.
We are currently in Year C. Each week we will be
listing the lections (readings) for the following week
in our Sunday bulletins. We are also posting a
schedule of the Lectionary on the Kiosk. You can
also pick up a copy of the 2016 Lectionary at church
or in the church office.
The 2016 quadrennial legislative meeting of the United
Methodist Church will take place from May 10-20, 2016
at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon.
The local host committee is responsible for providing
hospitality to visitors as they arrive and spend time in
the host city, Portland, Oregon.
This page, www.GC2016PDX.org is a source for
information about how volunteers can help in the
hosting process, and information about Portland for
guests to explore. This is the place to register as a
volunteer for General Conference 2016.
2016RevisedCommonLectionary-SundaysSpecialYearC.pdf
You can now register online as a potential volunteer.
The online system will let you say what dates you are
available, and request specific types of tasks. It will
take thousands of volunteer shifts to support the
conference, so people from all over the Western
Jurisdiction are invited to come and be part of the
conference.
TIME TO DE-DECORATE!
It's unfortunately time to put Christmas decorations
away at church, at least before next Sunday. We can
use help in moving chairs, building scaffolding,
removing ornaments, packing tree branches and
swags, etc. It all happens Saturday morning
January 9th at 9:00am. Contact Amy Melvin or
Donna Stock for any questions. Thanks!
It is rare to have a General Conference meeting so
close to home! Please let Donna Stock know if you
are interested in visiting as a volunteer or visiting the
conference.

Joyful News from
Joyful Hearts
Preschool
Joyful Hearts Preschool
Council is excited to welcome
Erin Williams to the staff as
the new preschool director.
Erin comes to us from Living
Montessori where she has been a teacher and
program director for the past five years. Erin took
over the director duties December 7th.
Recycle Your Christmas Styrofoam
Ikea is no longer taking Styrofoam, but you can
still recycle it at Styro Recycle LLC in Kent.
The Green Team will also be taking a load down
after Christmas, so if you would like to coordinate with them, contact the Kenyons at 425271-2080 or kenyonjs@comcast.net. We will
just be collecting the #6 Styrofoam (clean and
free of tape, labels, and all other things). We
suggest any foam peanuts or bubble wrap be
taken to the UPS store in Fairwood.
We were sad to see Robin Foster leave the end of
October after 7 years of dedicated service and feel
blessed to find a new director so quickly. We are
doubly blessed to have three dedicated staff
members that were willing to step up and keep the
preschool running smoothly during the interim.
Thank you to Trista Wilson, Janice McMorris, and
Brandi Hetrick for your continued passion for the
youngest members of our community. We would
also like to thank Pastor Joyce for taking on a more
visible role in the preschool during the absence of a
director.
Rather than filling our landfills with #6
Styrofoam, recycle it. It is ground up,
compressed and densified into blocks, which are
then manufactured into plastic products such as:
picture frames, TV & computer cases, office
equipment, and other plastic products.
SIGN UP NOW FOR
FLOWERS

loved one.

THANKS to our Christmas Eve volunteers
About 50 people helped to make our Christmas
Eve services special and run smoothly. This
doesn’t even count the amazing musicians who
also put in a lot of time to make the services
special. Thank you to our ushers, lay readers,
Communion servers and other helpers, greeters,
acolytes, Advent Candle lighters, worship slide
operators, folks handing out candles, people caring
for our little ones in the nursery, those who set up
and put away our luminaries, and the service
coordinators. We appreciate everything you did to
help celebrate the birth of Jesus!
Here is the list for the next few books.
January 28th: The Hummingbird by Steven Kiernan
Deborah Birch is a seasoned hospice nurse whose daily work
requires courage and compassion. Told with piercing empathy
and heartbreaking realism, The Hummingbird is a masterful
story of loving commitment, service to country, and absolution
through wisdom and forgiveness.
February 25th: Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
FRANCE, 1939
In love we find out who we want to be.
In war we find out who we are.
EPIPHANY and the Season after Epiphany
Epiphany is January 6th. This is not one of those
changing dates; it’s always January 6th. If we want
to celebrate it during our worship services, we will
choose a Sunday near January 6th. This year we’ll
celebrate Epiphany on January 3rd. Epiphany
marks the end of the 12 days of the Christmas
season that started with Christmas Day. We often
observe it as the arrival of the wise men. In the
earliest Christian traditions, it began a period that
celebrated the incarnation and baptism of Christ.
Depending on the date of Easter, the season after
Epiphany may include four to nine Sundays. This
year it continues through February 9th, Shrove
Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday when the
next season of Lent starts. Come join us in
worship!
March 31st: Two Wheels North by Evelyn Gibb
Gibb, winner of the Pacific Northwest Writers Association
Nonfiction Book Award, retells this wonderful rite of passage
culled from interviews with her father about his bicycle trip from
Santa Rosa, California, to Seattle, Washington, with his best
chum, Ray, in 1909.
April 28th: Skipping Stones by Gloria Koll
Poetically and well written story of a young Scandinavian
girl, leaving her family and hardship behind and venturing
to America in the late 1800's. Finally in America she
meets new hardships of life on the South Dakota prairie.
