May-June 2009
From the P resident
Dave Wolfe
RSNC President
It is hard to believe but we are now just weeks away from the
National Finals. The decision to move the Finals to June shortened
this year but has received overwhelming support, with the
exception of a few Oklahoma wheat farmers, and we apologize
that we are on top of your harvest.
It is our hope that each of you kids will bring your parents so the
entire family can enjoy the competition.
There are many new members attending and with that are many
questions. Please read this magazine cover to cover because we have tried to address most of them.
Of course when you are through and if you still have questions, you are certainly welcome to call Susie at the RSNC
office. I know she is going to want a raise but so far she is still smiling! We took on a huge challenge with tracking all
dollars won and spent, plus the five qualifying shows for each contestant, and then all the National and State points
races. I would like to thank Susie, Lisa, Marianne, Jessie and Laura for putting your sanctioning fees to good use.
They have done a great job!
A special note about stalls at the finals: If you want covered stalls we must know by May 15th so they can be
ordered. You can sign up for these on line or you can call Charlene at (580) 761-5249. All outside stalls can be
reserved the same way. Also, be sure to call one of the listed motels and tell them you are with RSNC to get the best
rates.
Many of you have just joined RSNC and have not had the opportunity to attend five sanctioned events to qualify
for the maximum percent payback at the Finals. However, we want to be sure everyone knows that all members are
welcome to compete at the finals, whether they make five shows or not.
If you didn’t make five shows you will receive 20% less in payback but are still eligible for huge cash payouts!
In addition, if you happen to be in the top 20 in points in your state you can also participate for the top 10 saddles
and prizes plus the State
Extravaganza saddles if you
are a state high point winner.
So be sure to check the web
site under Saddle Races for

Your contestants need
those points and five shows
tabulated. Additionally, as
you can see, the calendar is
already filling up fast for
next year. If you haven’t booked your 2009, 2010 shows, please call me soon.
Now for the great news! With the Free Memberships and draw opportunities in all classes at most of our sanctioned
events, we have more than doubled our membership this year and have welcomed nearly 3000 into our association.
In this season we collected very few membership fees because the huge majority of our current members brought a
friend along. Not only that but all those friends got to ride with everybody because everyone was in the draw at least
once in every division. Folks, this is the result of a great team effort by your association and each and every one of
you. It has worked so well we are going to continue it for the 2009-2010 season. All classes at the 2009 Finals will have
a single draw requirement and every current member who has signed up a new member since March 1st 2009 will
receive a free membership for 2009-2010.
All expired members will need to fill out their 2009-2010 membership forms after June 13 and will have the
opportunity to bring another friend for another free membership. If you don’t bring a new member, you will be
required to buy a membership.
Memberships are $50 for an individual and $30 for an additional family member, or $100 for the entire family with
kids 18 or under. Let’s continue to make the best better!
Safe travels and Good Luck at the National Finals! I look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Dave Wolfe
P.S. Great news for all of us who want dollars tracked on Sorting horses! Equistat has agreed to work with RSNC to
do just that! Watch the RSNC website for details.

ATTENTION ALL PAINT HORSE OWNERS
RSNC is proud to announce that all RSNC
sanctioned events are now PAC certified. That
means you can actually earn Paint Horse Points
in RSNC events. For details go to wwwAPHA.
com.
PS: Other associations we hope to have
partnerships with in the near future are Arabian
Horse Registry, AQHA and Little Britches
Rodeo.
What is the Paint Alternative
Competition (PAC) program?
APHA approves more than 1,200 horse
shows, races, and trail rides. Your community
Hill: Jumpin Jehosafat!
Billy: What in tarnation are you so riled
up about, Hill?
Hill: Did ya know that the Finals is only
one month away?
Billy: So why is that such a concern
to you? Is it that you don’t have the
cockleburs out of Snorty’s tail yet?
Hill: Nope, that ain’t it.
Billy: Is it becuz you ain’t got your five
shows in so you won’t get 20% more in
payback?
Hill: Nope, that ain’t it.
Billy: Is it becuz you ain’t reserved your
stall by May 15th.
Hill: Nope that ain’t it.
Billy: Then it must by cuz yur sittin 24th
in the points race and yur havin to get in
the top 20 so you have a chance for the
saddles and prizes.
Hill: Nope, that ain’t it either.
Billy: OK, let me try a couple more. It
is cuz your sittin 2nd in the points race
probably offers plenty of competitive events
for horses and riders, such as 4-H shows, team
penning events, roping events, horse trials, and
other activities that fall outside the category of
“APHA-approved classes.”
Even though APHA is not officially associated
with these events, the association does want to
recognize your efforts on your American Paint
Horse. As a result, your accomplishments can
be recorded on your registered horse’s official
lifetime performance record through PAC.
A variety of competition
PAC is open to almost any type of activity as
long as the competition is sponsored by an
organization that keeps official records, for up
to one year, on the performance of all horses
entered in the event. Keep in mind that for APHA
to include the event in PAC, the recognized
association, organization or affiliate must have
a representative who agrees to keep records and
will sign a verification form for the exhibitor.
PAC events and breed point appointed events
can be held in conjunction; however an exhibitor
cannot earn points and credits in the same class.
Credits from other breed or color registries that
award national points will not count.
Hill & Billy
and yur wantin to be 1st so you, of all
people, can represent our state in the State
Extravaganza.
Hill: Nope, that ain’t it.
Billy: How bout becuz you ain’t booked
our motel at the Holiday, Comfort, Quality
orEcono Lodge. You know they have special
RSNC rates if ya let them know you’re here
for the Finals don’t ya?
Hill: Yep, I know that and I done done it.
Billy: Ok, I think I got it. It’s cus you
just heard that they is havin a Cowboy
Race obstacle course at the Finals and yur
horse won’t cross a bridge or jump a log or
go thru the water ditch and you got ta get
him broke for all that so you can enter that
Cowboy Race.
Hill: Now I ain’t heard bout that yet but
Snorty will do all of them things so I am fur
sure getting in it. That will be a hoot!
Billy: OK, I give up! Why in tarnation are
you so excited bout the Finals being just a
month away!
Hill: Didn’t you hear that John and
LaJuanna are going to be there all week
to run the cook shack! Everybody that
knows them knows that they make the
best homecookin in the whole durn state!
LeJuanna’s apple pies are so good I am
going to quit eating startin right now so I
will have plenty of room after one of John’s
great sandwiches or burritos just so I can
eat the WHOLE PIE!
Billy: I should a knowed it had something
to do with one of your two primal instincts!
Billy: By the Way! I been meaning to talk
to you bout those three horses you sold me!
That 1st one is the same durn horse that I
sold you twice and now you have sold him
back to me for the third time. I got so mad
at him yesterday that I just got my gun and
shot him!
Hill: Now why in tarnation did ya do
that? All the times we sold him to each
other we was making a good livin off of
him!
Billy: That other horse that you told me
was such a good sortin horse and a good
cow horse and that could do everything so
good is DARN NEAR BLIND!
Hill: Don’t ya remember, I told ya he
didn’t look too good!
Billy: The last horse I need to talk to ya
about is that one we partnered on.
Hill: Ya mean the one we paid so much
money for. What the heck is wrong with
him?
Billy: Well, he died last night, but don’t
worry, I got a plan.
Hill: What’s that?
Billy: We are gonna raffle him off. I have
a good picture of him and we can do a
writeup and tell everybody how good of a
horse he was and sell raffle tickets for $10
each. We will get our money back in time.
Hill: We can’t do that! It will piss a lot of
people off.
Billy: No it won’t, it will only piss off the
winner and we will give him his $10 back.

There is plenty of opportunity for a 20th place state contestant entering the Finals with

2009 RSNC NATIONAL FINALS — June 8-13, 2009 Ponca City, OK
Since the announcement
of the 90% payback in
the four mega classes at
the 2009 National Finals,
the response has been
tremendous. Producers
all across the country, 26
states so far, have booked
five show series so eager
contestants in their area can
get qualified. As of May 15th
we have over 250 RSNC
sanctioned events booked.
The stage is set and plans
are being made to host an
unprecedented 3500+ team
event. The Play Pen Arena in
Ponca City, Oklahoma will
be the location.
An additional 300 stalls are
being shipped in to handle
the onslaught of ranch
sorting horses. If the cattle
only knew, they would lift
their tails and head for the
brush. An area adjacent to
the arena has been secured
to allow all the room
necessary for truck and
trailer parking so this huge
gathering of cowboys and
cowgirls can spread out and
even pitch a tent right there
on location if they wish.
There is no better place
than the Play Pen Arena for
western ranching lifestyle
atmosphere and contestant
affordability. We are aware
that there are many facilities
with more amenities, but
with that comes tens of
thousands of dollars in
more costs that are always
passed on to the contestant
in higher entry fees, office
charges and stall costs.
We at RSNC are dedicated
to making this a family
oriented sport so the family
can afford to participate.

8 ~ The Ranch Sorter
May-June 2009
Brenham, Texas
In the rural area near Brenham, Texas,
309 teams performed at the Nueces Canyon
Ranch Arena. The cattle were great. A
bunch of new members were signed up.
Now that is exciting. The day started out
with 40 teams in the All Levels with Larry
Byers and Ronnie Gebauer coming out
on top. Dave Jackson won the beginner
class with Thomas Bray holding the gate.
Congratulations goes out to Dave as he has
moved up the ladder to the Rookie Rating.
Cindy Barton won the #11 Ranch Hand
with husband Mike holding the gate. Fiftyseven teams were in the Masters. Good
to see the senior citizens having a good
time. Dave George and Van Gemmill took
the winning title in the #10 with 63 teams
in the class. Mandy Schoenst and David
Collins won the #13. Jonathan Marquart
and Edith Cook won the #11 Rookie Class.
Senior Youth winners were Cody Allred
and Pam Schooly. Junior youth winner
was Cheyenne Hirsch with Jennifer Hirsch
holding the gate. The day ended with

Cody Allred and Adolf Stricker winning
the #6. It was fun to see old and new faces
and to bring ranch sorting to the town
of Brenham. Look at the RSNC web site

some great fun and bring the whole family.
In March Doug held his event
at the Four Corners Ag Expo
and the show “rocked”. A lot was
going on and we had the ranch
rodeo folks coming over to see
what this was all about. The show
added over 20 new members and
everyone “played” til the cows
came home.
Family members from Grandpa
to Granddaughter shared in
the activities. Fun was had by
all! Even members from the

Doug’s show in April was held
in Farmington, New Mexico at
the McGee Fairgrounds, home to
the Wrangler Rodeo Finals. In
addition there was a rodeo going
on at the same time and once
again people came over to check
it out.

Sorting Horsemanship Tidbits
by Shelley Fitzgerald
Ranch Sorting is fun and easy. A lot
of people can sort, but if you want to
get better, proper horsemanship is the
beginning.
I work with a lot of beginners and
amateur sorters. The basics are what we
usually work on. It all sounds simple when
I tell them…Kick…Sit…Stop…Pull. All
these things have to happen in the right
order, at the right time, and every time for
it to become habit.
I was once told, it takes doing something
right twenty times in a row to make it habit.
If you mess up on number nineteen, you
have to start all over again. I believe that,
except it might be closer to fifty times in a
row.
Legs
Controlling your legs is not as easy as it
sounds. Some people forget they have legs
when they are on a horse, or they use them
to hang on with. A lot of equine disciplines
require long stirrups, such as Pleasure,
Trail, and
Roping, but long stirrups have a tendency
to keep you reaching for them all the time.
Cow events typically ride with shorter
stirrups. It allows you to sit deep in your
saddle and get your legs in and out of your
horse quickly.
Practicing dry work (working without a
cow) and going through the motions you
make when sorting cattle is very important.
If you can’t sit the stop, use cow side leg,
and pull your horse’s nose through the
turn without a cow, it gets faster and more
difficult when you add the cow.
Stop
One of the most important things when
working your horse is to make sure they
stop properly. You do this by kicking them
to ride forward. You get your legs out of
them and sit deep to make a complete stop.
It is real common for a beginner or
amateur rider to squeeze to stay on through
the stop and turn. This gets your horse on
office. There was no confusion, everyone
was in there place and were in and out of
there in no time. It was truly exciting and
rewarding to get to be a small part of such
an awesome function.
AWARDS AND ACTIVITIES:
2007- RSNC finals, 3rd place 2008- Meeker,
Oklahoma series, 1st place, Big Daddy
Rodeo- won belt buckle with my uncle,
Play Pen Arena took 1st place with my
grandmother.
WINNING WORDS:
Riding horses is a way of life for me. I
was taught if you work hard, anything
is possible. My horses are not only my
teammates, they are my friends. Together
we make an unstoppable team.
his front-end. It makes it harder to ride and
it pushes your horse toward the cow. You
lose your working advantage with the cow,
and the cow will beat you or will control
you.
The objective is to control the cow.
Something as simple as a proper stop and
making your horse do a proper 180 degree
turn will slow the cow down and put you
and your horse at an advantage.
Hands
A common mistake with your hands is to
use them to hang on with. Remember, we
are riding a horse, not a Harley. The reins
are a direct line to your horse’s mouth. They
are not handlebars.
Almost all of our sorting horses are taught
to break at the poll and be supple when you
pull on the reins. If you continue to hang
on the reins when your horse is doing what
he is supposed to, he will lose this supple
feel and become hard mouthed.
When we ask our horse to turn with
a cow, we first stop them. Then with a
direct rein we ask them to turn, nose first.
If a horse stops and turns on a cow with
his shoulder or ribcage first, that will
result in a round turn and put you at a
disadvantage on a cow. In other words, you
will be chasing a cow when you want to be
controlling a cow.
So the proper sequence to controlling a
cow is to kick forward and head the cow,
sit deep, get your legs out of the horse and
stop. Start your turn with the direct rein
and pull your horse over its hocks, nose
first. Halfway through the turn, kick with
your cow side leg to complete a 180 degree
turn. The shortest distance between two
points is a straight line. Sound simple? It is!

May-June 2009 The Ranch Sorter ~ 13
busting at the seams at Linked D Cowhorses
By Debbie McFarland, Palm city, Fl
Our March show brought out 247 teams!!
The April show had 217 teams. For a one
day show we are Rockin’. Luckily most of
the trailers rotated in and out as they either
got done with their classes or came in later
in the day for their upcoming class. The
parking field was jam filled and overflowed
into the next field for both shows! Starting
a couple of hours earlier in the day helped
us get done at a better hour for the April
show. It is a little tougher for you all that
have to travel very far for our 1st class; but
it is sure nice for the beginners to get done
earlier!! Our weather has been beautiful for
our shows. If we can get through the next
couple months without getting too hot we’ll
be in luck. We will be off for the summer
months of June - Sept; starting back the
beginning of Oct.
Our April show was very nice. The All
Levels class was huge with 67 teams. We
added a 2nd go round for our first time.
It was a little more work for our secretary
but I like the idea of having to be very
consistent to win. The most consistent
team; taking home Maynard Buckles and
almost a $1,000 was Liz McClendon and
Bryan Roberts. They won with 30 head;
getting 10 head here is very rare, much
less getting 10 head 3X!!! They both rode
awesome. Bryan had a really good show
also placing 2nd in this class and 2nd in
the#14. They are both rated #4’s-goes to
show you that the lower #’s can not only be
competitive; but big time winners in this
All- Levels Handicap class. We went ahead
and added $700 to this class. It paid back
$954 to win! Bryan and Jimmi Philman
were the reserve champs.
The points race is on for the novice riders.
They are all pushing hard to lead in the
point standings. So far Roy Thomas is
still at the top. The next 4 or 5 people are
all pretty close together. We have 4 more
shows in our state before the dust settles to
see who comes out on top.
Winning his last check and 1st buckle
in the Beginner Ranch Hand Class at the
March show was Greg Caldwell. He was
also 1st and 2nd in the #4 class. Greg has
moved his way up quickly. We’re proud

to see him doing so well. His excitement
has caught on to his wife Debi. She is now

works!
The April show had another winner
getting his 1st buckle. Dr. Luis Villar went
into the finals tied for 1st and got 5 cows to
win. His daughter and grandson were there
to cheer him on. Luis has been making
DVD’s for everyone of some of our shows.
He does an awesome job. It is really fun

Close behind Luis in the
beginner class were Ashton Royal
and Shelby Kirton. Both of these
little girls really put on a show.
They both rode really well and
made the beginner class quite
competitive. It is really fun to ride
with these kids and be a part of
their growing success. As most
of you know it’s the kids that are
tough to beat!
Our #4 class is really coming
along. This last show had 23
teams. I think our 1st show only
had 9 teams. I wanted a place for
those just out of the beginner class
to have a place with their peers
(and a little lower entry fees) to
compete. We have even had a
few #3’s recruit some beginners
to ride with them. It is nice for
everyone to have 2 classes to feel
they can be competitive in. I think
this class will remain a stepping
stone for our new and upcoming
riders; as well as those who only
get to ride on the week-end. The
husband and wife team of John
and Shannon Royal won the April
show. I always like to see spouses
win together. They juggle a few
kids and don’t always get to be at
the shows together. It was great
to see them get in the money
when they did get to ride together.
Another ranch sorting family;
their daughter Ashton was 2nd in
the beginner class.
Another class we’ve recently
added is the Masters. It too was
slow to start. A year ago in May
was our 1st time for this class
and there were only 10 teams. It
has grown to 25 teams at our last
show. It seems to be anyone’s guess
who will win. The only name that

RANCH SORTING EXPLODES IN FORT COLLINS, COLORADO
Ninety-one brand new sorters participated
in ranch sorting clinics at the Colorado
State University Equine Center March
21st! When asked why so big? First time
RSNC Producer Chuck Peterson replied,
“We promoted to the general equine
communities with a vengeance.” Now that
sounds simple, but there was actually a
plan of attack put together by Chuck and
the RSNC marketing team that produced
remarkable results! Before this event, Dave
Wolfe sat the team down and asked them
to come up with a marketing plan. The
idea was to promote the sport in ways that
could be duplicated by RSNC producers so
the sport can grow in the same successful
way all across the country. Mr. Wolfe said,
“ I kept thinking if we could prove right
here in Fort Collins where I have been
putting these events on for 15 years, that
we have yet to tap into the ranch sorting
market, then producers everywhere will
see that the secret to getting new sorters
is to quit preaching to the choir.” Not
only did it work, but the two instructors,
Gene DeGroot and Dave Wolfe, put on
two clinics each to get through the great
response.
After the sorting clinic on Saturday, most
came back Sunday to make the Beginners
class so big that Beginners were paired up
with Beginners and there were still over 90
teams in the Beginners class!
Now with over 400 current RSNC
members in Colorado, producers have a
great opportunity to host big successful
sorting competitions.
On Saturday night, current and potential
producers were invited

to a producers seminar
to visit and share ideas
about marketing the sport.

• Masters Division
All contestants age fifty and older may enter
the Masters’ Division and compete for cash
payouts. In addition to vying for payouts,
individuals representing the Top Twenty
Masters from their home state will compete for
special year-end awards. These riders will enter
the Finals with 20 to 1 points, respectively, in
the Masters’ Division. In addition to a rider’s
Top Twenty points, points earned in this class
only will determine the winner of the Masters’
Division saddle and other year-end awards.
• Graduated Beginners’ Division
All contestants with a rating of 2 or less
may enter as a sorter in the Graduated
Beginners’ Division and compete for cash
payouts. In addition to vying for payouts,
all 2008 Graduated Beginners as well as #1
rated Beginners representing the Top Twenty
Beginners from each state will compete
for special year-end awards. All Graduated
Beginners will enter the Finals with no less
than 10 points in the Graduated Beginners’
Division. In addition to a rider’s Top Twenty
points, points earned in this class and the
Rookie #11 RH HC Sort will determine
the winner of the Graduated Beginners’
Division saddle and other year-end awards. A
graduated Beginners division will be a pick 4
partners, draw 1 or draw up to all 5 partners.
• Graduated Rookies’ Division
All contestants with a rating of 3 or less may
enter in the Graduated Rookies’ Division
and compete for cash payouts. In addition to
vying for payouts, all 2008 Graduated Rookies
as well as Rookies representing the Top
Twenty Rookies from each state will compete
for special year-end awards. All Graduated
Rookies will enter the Finals with no less than
10 points in the Graduated Rookies’ Division.
In addition to a rider’s Top Twenty points,
points earned in this class and #6/4 Incentive
will determine the winner of the Graduated
Rookies’ Division saddle and other year-end
awards.
The Graduated Rookies’ Division will be a
pick 4 partners, draw 1 or draw up to all 5
partners. The draws for this division will come
from a pool of other 3 or below rated riders.
• Novice, Amateur, and Open Divisions
All Novice, Amateur, and Open riders may
enter their respective classes and compete for
cash payouts. In addition to vying for payouts,
the Top Twenty Novice, Amateur, and Open
riders from each state will compete for the
year-end awards. These riders will enter the
finals with 20 to 1 points, respectively. Riders
graduating from Novice to Amateur or from
Amateur to Open will enter the Finals with no
less than 10 points. These Top Twenty points,
plus points earned in respective qualifying
divisions, will determine the winners of the
Novice, Amateur and Open saddles and other
year-end awards.
• One Hand Sort
This division is an All Levels Handicap
but all contestants must ride with one hand
on the reins. If you use two hands or switch
hands at any time during the run, the team is
disqualified.
• Rated Youth Division
This division is for all youth 18 or below with
a rating of 2 or higher. It will be like all other
divisions with a pick 4 and draw 1 or draw up
to all 5. Youth will ride with each other in this
division.
• Beginner Youth/Adult
This division is for #1 rated youth 18 or
under only. This will be a Ranch Hand division
where the youth sorts and an adult or upper
rated contestant works the gate. It is a pick 4
and draw 1 or draw up to all 5.
• Double Back Reverse Sadie Hawkins
Here is a new one for ya’, how about a twist
on your typical sort. How many times have
you, well, mistakenly sorted in reverse order?
Ok, so the announcer calls number 6. The
team must sort cattle to the opposite pen and
at some point start sorting in reverse order
the same cattle back into the original pen. The
kicker is only the cattle that are successfully
sorted back to the original pen count. If the
correct numbered cow starts across the line
but doesn’t completely clear before reversing
back the other way, that cow does not count
and the reverse must begin. Sound ok so far?
Oh yes and we added Sadie Hawkins; please
tell me you know about Sadie Hawkins. It’s
where the girls ask the guys to dance. Should
be a mad rush for those prime male team
sorters. This will be a pick 4-draw one or
draw all 5. All guys that are picked at least
once must enter the draw once. No guy can be
picked more than 4 times.
Biggest rule for the weekend: No whining,
complaining or sulking. All caught doing any
of these infractions will be fined dunks into
the water trough!!!! Supervised by the camp
boss.
BRING YOUR STATE FLAG FOR THE
STATE EXTAVAGANZA!
It is not necessary to have attended five
sanctioned shows to ride in the STATE
EXTRAVAGANZA.
You must be the high point rider from your
state in your rating category to qualify.
The high point Beginner, Rookie, Novice,
Amateur, Open and Masters from each state
will each ride twice with their five other state
team members.
Your state team can choose how your six
teams are entered.
The Division will be an All Level Handicap.
If a high point member does not attend, the
next highest point member who attends can
ride.
If no member qualifies or attends in a rating
category, then the highest attending member
in the next rating category down is eligible.
If a Masters does not qualify or attend, any
youth attending from that state can substitute.
If a State doesn’t have enough attending
members for a six person team then they
can combine with other states in the same
situation. However the rating catagories must
be enforced for the assembled team
Entry fees are $50/entry with a required two
ride limit. This is a prize division and prizes
will be awarded through third place state
teams.
Six Vinton saddles will be awarded to the
winning state team.
The teams in the top 10 in the State
Extravaganza All Levels Handicap Class will
each receive 10 to 1 points respectively.
These points will determine the top three
states who will all ride again with the same
partners as before with a clean slate.(three
states equaling 18 teams to the finals)
The teams in the top 10 in the Finals of the
State Extravaganza will each receive 10 to 1
points respectively.
You have to get a time to get points. Those
points will determine the winning….

ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS
The 2009/2010 season starts right after the finals in
June! Therefore we want your input on the association
rules. We will be making rule changes in the upcoming
month so if you have suggestions please email us with
them. The program is working but there is always room for
improvement! You can email us at info@rsnc.us
ATTENTION ALL TRAINERS
Don’t forget to bring your sale horses. We are offering
the Claimer Class again so you can show off those good
sorting horses to the onslaught of Ranch Sorters looking
to improve their opportunities to win. In the Claimer Class
all horses are for sale and the announcer will announce the
price, pedigree and details provided by the seller on each
horse. It’s the RSNC way of helping you help yourselves!
