He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1984. He has been watching Alabama football religiously since the 1968 Cotton Bowl, in which Gene Stallings’ Texas A&M team upset the Tide 20-16. Several years ago Rodney began to dream of starting his own Alabama sports newsletter. Keeping up with the Tide was a passion. He wanted to make it his livelihood. On October 27, 1996 Rodney and his brother Dalton launched Tider Insider. They started on the free space that was included with his internet access service. Immediately, they had email from Bama fans who had found their site and were excited about the new source of information. By the fourth of November they had over 400 hits a day. In mid-December they moved the site to a new server and began their own subscription service. By the end of 1997, Tider Insider was getting millions of hits a month. In the summer of 2000, WJRD-TV sports director Gary Harris called Rodney and suggested that he consider expanding Tider Insider to a 30-minute weekly television show that Rodney and Gary could host. On Tuesday, August 29, 2000, Tider Insider premiered in West Alabama on WJRD. A year later, WJRD became WVUA and moved to its current location at the University of Alabama. Since its inception, Tider Insider has been shown live every Tuesday night at 6:30 in Tuscaloosa and on cable in other areas. It is a favorite source of information about University of Alabama sports throughout the year. Senior Adult Ministry: 205-632-3054 What a night of fellowship, food and entertainment! All of these were wonderful, but it was really nice for everybody just to get together and be able to spend time catching up on each other’s lives. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the great food prepared by Jay, Don and Kenny, the beautiful decorations, and the people who tirelessly who served the meal. Grandma could not have done better! After we had time to catch up with each other and share a fantastic meal, we enjoyed superb entertainment by Three on a String, a local group from Birmingham. They have the ability to keep you laughing through the entire program and they sooo take you back to the ‘good ole days’ when all of us were growing up. To each one of us they brought back different memories of things that happened while we were in high school. I think most would agree that we all left the Senior Celebration knowing how blessed we were growing up in the time we did. We took the opportunity to recognize the different senior ministries that mean so much to our church and our community. Also, we looked forward to the schedule for the rest of the year. Words cannot express our gratitude to all people involved who made this night such a success! - Jerry Lake Mid-Week Devotion Wednesdays|5:45 p.m.|Chapel July 6: HymnSing July 13: Dave Woods July 20: Charlene Ferniz July 27: South Asia Trip Report Legendary Waterways of Europe by Nina Jones PAGE 3 The Danube, an unbelievable vacation that exceeded all expectation! I searched for words to describe the beauty of the Danube River and decided to listen to fellow travelers from First Baptist: “Wow”, “Beautiful”, “Magnificent”, and a direct quote from Jerry Lake, “Best vacation ever”. We arrived in Budapest, Hungary, on May 12, 2016, for a Welcome Aboard Party followed by a cruise on the Danube River at night. Budapest is known as the “Jewel of the Danube”, and it sparkled with lights on the Parliament House, Buda Castle, and the Szechengi Chain Bridge. Beautiful Vienna, Austria, with a day tour of Schonbrunn Palace, an evening at Kursalon Concert Hall featuring Mozart, and a tour of the city completed the day. Only one third of the buildings survived World War II, but they lined the avenues with splendor. For 14 days, we sailed on the Amadeus Princess on the Danube, the Main, and the Rhine Rivers on water so smooth you felt you were floating into an ancient time of white houses, red slate roofs, and flowers in profusion. Rich black soil produced wheat, hops, and corn in multiple shades of green. God painted a landscape and accented each small village with a wonderful church. In each bend of the river, we marveled at rivers with no trash and parks that were spotless with wild flowers, swans, and mallards, creating a postcard picture. Barbara Birdnow People actually took time to sit on the bank Emil Turner of the river and wave at the passing boats. Kaye Kidd Multiple bike riders enjoyed a leisure we Jean Bailey seem to have forgotten. Gerry Glisson The Middle Rhine was home to 40 Martha Crabtree castles on hills overlooking the river and an Margaret Montgomery unbelievable amount of vineyards running Helen Lake vertically up the mountains. We toured the Joe Kines Murel Cunningham small villages lining the rivers and were delighted with the local shops and crafts. The village square in the center of each town was Dovel Rock Fred Fisher the perfect spot for a cup of latte while observing the local vendors. Weary from a long day of touring and shopping, we returned to the ship for a beautifully Betty Upchurch presented meal where we had the hard choice of which dessert we would order. Someone in Claire Wood the group just ordered two desserts or shared part of other guests’ desserts. I will not name Linda King Debbie Hamner names, but I did notice he had white hair and a big smile on his face. Patsy Bolden We arrived in Amsterdam to marvel at river canals running through the old city and Ron Henry thousands of bikes zipping down bike lanes. We soon Sue Mobley learned this was a major mode of transportation and to Martha Pierson stay out of the red paved bike lanes unless you wanted to Velma McClure be a bike ornament. Grady Friday At dinner that night we were already wondering if Katharine Brown there were other river cruises just as wonderful. No bags Eunice Clements to pack each day, three delicious meals at your pleasure, Susan Newell and your bed turned down with chocolate on the pillow. Robert McPherson Mari McPherson The only question I have is “When do we leave?” July Birthdays • Naomi’s Sisters meets for lunch the second Tuesday of each month. • Line Dance exercise classes meet each Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Special Education Room. • Prime Time Singers meet the 1st, 3rd & 5th Thursday of each month (resumes in August). 721 Greensboro Avenue Tuscaloosa, AL 35401 Non-profit Organization U.S. Postage PAID Tuscaloosa, AL Permit No. 4 Return Service Requested. R’s Bread & Butter Pickles from Rosalind Holloman 6 qts. medium cucumbers 6 3/4 cups sugar (about 6 pounds sliced) 2 1/4 tsp. turmeric 3 cups onion (12-15 small white 2 1/4 tsp. celery seed ones, or about 1 pound sliced) 3 Tbsp. mustard seed 3 large garlic cloves 4 1/2 cups vinegar (white, distilled or apple cider) 1/2 cup salt (I prefer apple cider vinegar.) 3 quarts ice, (crushed or cubed) 1/2 tsp. calcium chloride (found in canning supplies) Wash cucumbers thoroughly, using a vegetable brush, and drain on rack. Slice unpeeled cucumbers into 1/8 to 1/4 inch slices. Add onions, garlic and salt; cover with ice, mix thoroughly and allow to stand for 3 hours. Drain thoroughly and remove garlic. Combine sugar, spices and vinegar; heat just to a boil. Add cucumber and onion slices and heat 5 minutes. Pack loosely into clean, hot, pint standard canning jars. Adjust lids. Process in boiling water bath canner (121 degrees F.) for 5 minutes. Yields 8 pints. Hints: I do not use my Cuisinart to slice the cucumbers. It makes them too thin and uneven. I wash my jars in hot soapy water and fill with about 1/3 pint of water and place them in microwave for 10 minutes before I pack them. This kills any microbe or fungus and keeps them hot. The water bath should cover the tops of the lids. Boil the lids and rings and keep the lids in the hot water until ready to cover the jars. - RH Squash Casserole from Helen Lake 3 cups squash ¾ stick of butter 2 eggs beaten 1 tsp. celery salt (optional) 1 cup milk ¼ tsp. black pepper 1 cup grated cheese ¾ chopped onion 2 cups cracker crumbs (I use Ritz) Cook squash until tender. Mash; add butter, salt and pepper, cheese and milk. Mix well. Add beaten eggs, cracker crumbs and onion. Pour into greased baking dish. Bake at 375 degrees for 30-40 minutes or until a knife comes out clean.
