Holiday Pet Hazards
While you are busy making your festive plans
for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas,
please don’t forget to include your pets. The
holidays are a time for giving, but there are
some things you should not share with your
furry friends. Once you know the hazards, a
little precaution and prevention will make holidays a happy time for everyone.
Ornaments:
Sharp or breakable ornaments, dreidels, and even aluminum foil
should be kept out of reach. String objects, especially tinsel and
ribbons, are to be safeguarded at all costs. They are thin and
sharp and can wrap around intestines or ball up in the stomach.
Stress and company:
With everyone coming and going, watch out for open doors and
sneaky pets. Make sure your pets have updated collars and
tags on in case of escape. Microchipping your pet will also help

Christmas tree:
Make sure your tree is well secured. If you have a tree-climbing

the wall, using strong cord or rope. Preservatives often used in
the water in a tree stand can cause gastric upsets, so be sure it
is inaccessible or not used. Avoid sugar and aspirin additives in
the water as well.

A.F.C.H.S. Committee Recruitment
Pet Loss support group - "Nikky's Door" Is dedicated to
helping people deal with the loss of a beloved pet. This support group is held twice monthly in Lodi and Stockton. A
public health nurse and counselor, Beverly Templeton, started the workshop for AFCHS nearly 10 years ago after losing
her 12-year-old poodle, Nikky.
We need your help! If you or someone you know would like
to be more involved with Animal Friends Connection, we are
looking for committee volunteers. We need help in the
following areas:
Pets Behavin' Badly - Held the last Monday of alternate
months except holidays. Dr. Penny Hodge provides guidance with behavior problems in your dog or cat. Please call

First Aid for Pets - Workshop covers various emergency
situations involving your pets. Classes held upon request for
groups. Call (209) 365-0535.
Feral Cat Management - Marian Repp, AFCHS board
member and Dr. Ann Zinck are instructors. Classes are held
upon request. Call (209) 365-0535.
Therapy Dog Certification - We offer the public an opportunity to take their personal pets through a certification process enabling them to visit local nursing homes, hospital
wards and developmental centers in our community. After
registration they may opt to visit on their own or become an
AFCHS Therapy dog/handler. Linda Wendorff, “Therapy
Dogs Inc” board member, donates her time traveling to the
Stockton/Lodi area from Vacaville. Therapy Dogs training is
free and offered twice yearly. Call (209) 365-0535.

Volunteer Opportunities
Immediate positions available!
All it takes is a few hours of spare time once a week to make a difference to the animals. Whether it's working with the
public or on a computer, opening your home to a foster animal, spaying/neutering and supervising feral cats, or helping
people over the phone, we have something for you! Students can also get credit for their volunteer hours!
Dog Walkers and Kennel Help
Adults or teenagers that enjoy walking or running and would like to walk our dogs one or more days a week year round.
Mornings after 7am or late afternoons. Spend time socializing and playing with the dogs.
Mobile Adoption Site Volunteers
Coordinate and volunteer to help with needy pets to come to adoption sites. Help with set-up and breakdown of adoptions, interview prospective adopters, coordinate pet deliveries to their new homes.
Help to clean cat cages and cuddle with cats at adoption sites.
Cat Cuddlers
Youth or adults to brush, pet and socialize cats and to help with cleaning. Seven days a week 9am to 7pm.
Fundraising and Raffle Help
Help organize one or more events each year and/or help organize our Furr Ball and Fiesta raffles.

2010 Fiesta Dinner:
Fall 2010 Therapy Dpgs:
Our Eighth Annual Fiesta Dinner
held in August at Max and Barbara
Steinheimer’s in their beautiful garden was a huge success.
The below people and their canine friends completed the
Fall 2010 Therapy dogs class.

We sold 230 tickets and grossed over $13,000.00.
Sandra Mohan-------and------Jake
Casa Mexicana in Lodi did the catering and did an excellent
job, everyone enjoyed the food. In memory of their beloved
daughter who loved animals, they partially donated the dinner.
As usual our silent auction and raffle is one of the best around
offering many great prizes to be won or bid upon.
Everyone enjoyed the music by DJ, David Allyn Kraham.
A special desert cookie donated by Olde Tyme Pastries in
Turlock had edible pictures of our cats and dogs in need of
homes.
We thank the Steinheimers, the Fiesta committee and all our
volunteers for their help making this the best event ever.
Thank you to all the donors and business that contributed to
this years event by advertising the event, selling tickets, or
donating food, raffle or silent auction items.
Another highlight of the evening was the separate drawing for
the 1964 Ford Thunderbird donated to us by a wonderful
anonymous donor and was won by Valarie Harper of Lodi.
We made nearly $12,000 from that raffle.
Thank you to all the businesses and everyone else that supported us by selling or purchasing tickets during the raffle of
the car.

Wish List
Hi Donna,
I thought it would be nice to let you know that Ruby
(Emmy) is doing wonderful! We adopted her from you
back in April. She is a wonderful girl and has made herself part of our family. We take her to the dog park
about 3 times a week and she just LOVES it! She is so good with other dogs,
always respectful and gentle and we even take her over to the little dog side
and she loves them! Rosy, our other dog, and Ruby love each other and Ruby
has been a good influence on Rosy getting her more active, but not pestering
at all. My husband takes Ruby running, and we also go on almost daily walks
over to the school yard. We love Ruby. She is so very sweet. I just thought
that in a world of so much bad news, that a success story would make all your
efforts worthwhile!
At Animal Friends Connection Humane Society we have many wishes. These wishes are
things that can help us do a better job at
helping out the animals in our adoption/foster
network. Also, these wishes can improve or
expand our organization to be able to help
more homeless animals. Below is a list of our

Hi Donna,
I don't know why, but I was thinking about you today and thought I'd just
drop a line about the little poodle we adopted about a year and a half ago,
Murphy. You might remember us because Murphy had a rough start – he
was sick, had worms, etc., and you received several emails from me about his health issues soon
after the adoption - but he has turned out to be an unbelievably great dog. He’s so kind and never crabby, even when our cat eats his food or our daughter carries him around. He’s happy and
healthy and is a great addition to our family. He's a true people dog who loves his family, and
he's enjoying a comfortable and happy life. I hope you are doing well and just wanted you to
hear something happy for the weekend.

I just wanted to send you some updated pictures of Layla! She is doing wonderful and now weighs 120lbs...so she's a BIG girl. She is a wonderful dog and I
just want to thank you again for this opportunity.

About 2 years ago we received a frantic phone call from Holly, who had seen a cat at one of our local
Stockton pet stores. Holly had been out of town for a week, and had thought about 'Grizabella' all
week. She had worried all week that she had been adopted by someone else. 'Grizzie' (affectionately
called) was still available - much to Holly's relief! Grizabella had been a downtown Stockton stray that
had multiple litters of kittens before she was rescued and brought to AFC. Grizabella went to live with
Holly and Don and is now thriving in the lap of kitty luxury. She has her own bean bag and couch to
lay on, her own sunny room and lots of windows to sit and watch the world go by - warm and safe! No more worries about
where to find her next meal and how to keep her babies safe! Grizabella has been shortened to Bella - a much more fitting title
for the Princess she is!
Shilo was a long term adult female that had grown up in our foster care system. When Holly saw
Shilo the first time, it was love at first sight. As with Bella, Holly kept thinking about Shilo. She
asked if we thought that Shilo and Bella would get along. As with all of our adoptions, we discussed
it with Holly and decided that it might be a good match. Shilo has done wonderful with Bella and
now also has her own bean bag and sunny room to watch the world go by. And the best thing for
Shilo - no more mobile cat adoptions to go to!

Wooly was taken from the Stockton Shelter.
Here is the most recent picture of Wooly who is not so
wooly anymore. This was taken after his first trip to the
groomer ("Grooming Extraordinaire").. Of course he was
the "hit" of the day at the groomers because of his disposition and perfect behavior. He is a real winner as you described him. A really perfect dog who is bright, friendly and lovable. Now
that he has been groomed it probably turns out that he has a good bit of
Bichon in his DNA. Whatever, we are most grateful for your care and consideration. Best Wishes.

Kyle was rescued running the streets in downtown Lodi, he was around 5 years old.
A wonderful family that lived near the Oregon border sent in an application that was perfect for him.
Hi to all, I wanted to let you know that Spike (AKA Kyle) is a wonder dog. He learns everything fast and
his manners are what any dog owner would be impressed with. His tail never stops wagging. Now that
the weather has warmed his cough is gone. Spike has a new sister. (Not planned) Sassy is a Yorkie
that has had no discipline at all. She had no idea that she was a dog. Spike to the rescue. He helps
me with her training and he has let her know how dogs act. We are very happy with our Spike. I go to your site often and wish
I could adopt them all.

Gracie was brought to AFC as a very scared
and timid girl. She hid at our sanctuary as
she was terrified of the other cats. At the
foster homes she became more secure and
less fearful but still was not happy with the
other cats. Holly fell in love with Gracie immediately and as with her
other 2 adopted cats, couldn't get her off her mind! Once again, Holly
called us to try to offer sanctuary to a very needy adult cat. Gracie
came in to Holly's home a little shy, but it didn't take her long to realize
that she was safe and that the other cats were not going to be a
threat. Gracie now loves Holly and gets along wonderful with the other
cats. Bella, Shilo, Gracie, Holly and Don are a “Happy Tails” family!!!
Wesley and Winston are siblings that were adopted from us about three years ago. They were semi feral at the
time this wonderful couple adopted them and they are now tame cats. They are indoor only cats with a gorgeous
view of a golf course. After they had been with them for awhile the boys started feuding with each other but it
sounds as if they are getting along again.
Hi Pat- I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I have been meaning to send an update on the boys for a while
now. We had a major break through with them... they are getting along much better and have stopped fighting for
the most part. We have even had both of them in bed with us at the same time just inches apart. There is still the occasional scuffle,
but it is more noise than contact and all we have to do is raise our voice a little for it to stop. They are both very affectionate and are
even allowing us to give them belly rubs. I am attaching a few new photos to show how relaxed they have
gotten. I will keep you posted. Please let everyone that knew them know how well they are doing.

Sam is a wonderful golden

mix. He was
adopted from
us about
6 years ago,
but unfortunately his family is having to move to a trailer
where they can't have a larger dog
so we are having to move him to a
kennel situation. He is now about
8 years old, just a wonderfully
sweet dog--he loves people more
than anything else, and he would
be a great dog to take through therapy dog training. He weighs 60

kitten. She's
very sweet
and loving, but
desperately needs another kitten
or playful cat to live with.
Blinkie is blind. She was born with
this congenital condition. She is
very healthy otherwise and thinks
she is a normal kitten.
She needs a safe, loving, forever
