LEGISLATIVE REPORT
As you probably already know HB4105,
the Blue Dot Taillight bill, was passed
in the Senate and is now being sent to
Governor for signing. It passed on May
18th and they have 30 days to get it to
the Governor. He then has 60 days to
either sign it or veto it. If he does nothing in those 60 days it will become law
automatically.
Not much happening in the capitol as you probably
know. No budget yet and everything is hurting badly. The CRSTP (Cycle Rider Safety Training Program) is in very bad shape! Todd Vandermyde and
myself had a sit down meeting with Assistant Secretary Rich Brauer, IDOT Chief of Staff Matt Magallis, and Priscilla Tobias who is in charge of Office of
Program Development. I had asked for the meeting
over what I had been hearing about the program.
Today’s meeting with IDOT was informative. There
are several unconnected things that are happening at
the same time; retirements, lack of budget, Special
Master over hiring and job titles.
During the Quinn administration IDOT was used as
a dumping ground for political hires. And now due
to a lawsuit, there is a special master overseeing hiring. They are also looking at job descriptions, and
what work people are actually doing and looking to
see which people should not be protected jobs and
those that are political appointments which can be
terminated. This means a lot of people are getting
looked at, which could include Terry Redman. He is
acting outside his job description with the job he
does at CRSTP. So the Special Master slows down
the hiring of replacements. There have been (2) retirements in the last 9 months of people who are critical to the success of this program. We were told the
two vacancies will be filled.
Issues with CRSTP are related to the budget. There
have been no appropriations for operations, and that
is where CRSTP falls. Despite the dedicated funding
source, there have been no authorization to spend
any of the money, which is part of the ongoing
budget battle. There was a question about federal
funds that they get for motorcycle issues, but again,
without authorization to spend it, they can’t.
Harper College has stated that if they don’t get some
funds soon that they will drop the program in Aug.
The U of I has stated they have some issues and that
they will drop the program in the end of 2017. IDOT
already has some colleges to fill in if they do drop it.
IDOT is now preparing to make some partial payments to those that have the program. IDOT will be
moving some of their Operational Funds around to
finance these partial payments.
A couple of colleges my drop the program as they
are all bent out of shape about the $20
deposit and their slush funds being monitored. If U of I pulls out, they think they
have another place that will pick up their
contract.
We cannot just sit back on our haunches and let the
next person do it. We ALL have to “pitch in” and do
it if we want to keep our favorite mode of transportation running smoothly. It is up to us. We win our
“Rights & Freedoms” on Election Day’s and Political Fundraisers.
Get to your Congressional Legislator when he is
home from D.C. and LOBBY THEM here in Illinois. We need your voices heard, Look at their Calendar.

plan for the feds and asked for our input
into it for the motorcycle end of it. They
should be emailing it to Bob to distribute. This is a first.
Assistant IDOT Secretary Rich Brauer,
who has been a Great Friend with
ABATE said to “keep in touch if there
are any concerns or we need to talk
about anything”. That is specifically why
I had asked for Rich to be there. I wanted
him to hear what we were told in this
meeting and what we had said about our
concerns/issues. Rich has always been a
man of Integrity. Someone you could
trust.
Now Last January at our Seminar I had
challenged everyone in ABATE of Illinois to bring at least (1) new member
into the organization. Have you brought
yours in yet? I have!
I also challenged everyone to donate $25
to each one of our PAC’s. Have you
done that yet? I have! KEEP our PAC’s
financed!

As we are constantly talking about new attracting
members to our cause, here
are a few things to think
about when you are recruiting and bringing in members. Be honest and transparent when sending out materials to attract
new members. Make sure your material
describes accomplishments throughout
the state and locally. Show them you are

The GHSA (Governors Highway Safety
Administration) is predicting an increase

RETREADS - ALLIGATOR ALLEY - OBSERVATIONS OF A MOTORCYCLIST
Q. Over the year s we have r eceived
many questions from ABATE members inquiring as to the safety of
"retread" truck tires. Some of us have
had to dodge retread tire materials and
have narrowly avoided crashes. Interestingly in the age of almost perfect
communication, retreads seemingly
have missed scrutiny. Is it because the
problem is only a motorcyclist problem? What follows is our first stab at
answering this question.
A. Let' s get to the point. Ar e ther e
safety issues with retread tires? We
have studied the problem and there are
some questions that just don't add up.
So let's start our inquiry with information as to exactly what is a retread
or capped tire. The general definition is
that a retread, also known as "recap,"
or a "remold" is a remanufacturing process for tires that replaces the tread on
worn tires. Essentially retreading is a
process that saves money by shaving
down old tires to the casing and gluing
on a new tread. (Years ago I worked at
General Tire in Indianapolis where we
glued retreads to used casings.) Sound
safe? Some of us have witnessed a delaminating retread. My experience was
spectacular. The semi just ahead of me
had a trailer tire delaminate at about 60
mph. The tire delaminated violently
and showered tire debris over me and
my FLH. I still have a crack in my
windshield caused by tire shrapnel. To
avoid catastrophe I slalomed around
the larger chunks of tire material some
of which was large enough to derail a
motorcyclist. I now collect photos of
retread debris in an effort to shed light
on a hazard to motorcyclists.
Now for the other side's story - the retreaders. According to Tire Retread &
Repair Information Bureau aka TRIB,
retread tires are a good deal and are
safely used by trucking fleets and others all over the country. But regulations
disallow retreads in certain applications. So why is it that retreads cannot
be legally used on the steering axle of a
bus if they are safe? Some companies
have a private policy of no retreads on
a steering axle. Why? No one provides
a clear answer to that one, but I have a
pretty good guess.
IF retreads are truly safe
then what about all the retread debris you see on the
side of the highways aka roadside alligators? Most
of us know those to be leftovers of a delaminated retread tire. But the retread
groups claim that the rubber pieces you see on the road come
from both new “virgin” and retreaded
tires in equal proportions to their usage
on roads (They have not shared the
data). That claim does not fit with my
past experience as a commercial truck
driver. Those lobbying groups claim to
have additional studies indicating that
the main cause of the roadside debris is
from tires being improperly maintained, under/over inflated, road hazards, potholes, and driver operational
error. My experience begs to differ
especially when I see long strips of
retread materials along the roadway
that have become unglued.
If retreads are a safety hazard, why do
many trucking companies use retreads?
Is it because they are better and safer?
The real answer is: retreads are cheaper. You can get a retread for 30-50 percent less than a new tire. Retread supporters claim that retreading truck tires
saves the trucking industry over $3
billion each year, but at what expense?

sued the homeowner for negligence.

So even if no city or county ordinance
bars the practise of blowing grass clippings onto the road, the lawyers will be
waiting for you if you do and someone
is injured. I can almost guarantee that
you will get sued if a motorcyclist is
injured because of your grass clippings.
Let us know about your experiences.
A. Sur pr isingly, that’s the law. Most
states are members of an interstate
compact for enforcement of traffic
tickets. That is fancy lawyer talk for
let’s collect more money for the state.
If you don't appear in court and pay the
fine, your home state will be notified
and will suspend your license until you
deal with the out-of-state ticket. The
Driver License Compact (DLC) also
provides that the home state treat the
offense as if it had been committed in
your state, applying your state laws to
the out-of-state offense. The action
taken includes points assessed on a
minor offense such as speeding and
suspension of license or a major violation such as DWI/DUI. Not included
are non-moving violations like parking
tickets, tinted windows, loud exhaust,
etc. All states are members except for
Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, and
Tennessee. Nevada repealed the authorizing legislation, though it still
generally conforms to the agreement
through regulations.
Even though Michigan is not a member
of the interstate compact, the officer is
authorized to receive from the alleged
offender a cash bond to secure the appearance in court to answer for the
ticket. If the offender cannot post the
bond (in cash, on the roadside) the officer is empowered to retain the offender's license to guarantee appearance. The cash bond cannot exceed

Q. Is it illegal for people to blow
their grass clippings onto the roads in
Indiana? Thank you, Brian Russell ABATE MEMBER.
A. While no state law directly prohibits
blowing grass clippings onto public
roadways, there maybe city and county
ordinances barring the practise. Keep
in mind that grass clippings blown onto
roads are not only an eyesore but also a
hazard to motorcyclists. Engineers
have calculated the coefficient of friction of fresh grass clippings - almost as
slick as grease. So while you may not
be in violation of a law, you may have
created a condition that could cause
you to be liable for injuries caused by
your clippings. Here is why.
Lawsuits have been filed against property owners claiming that covering the
roadway with grass clippings creates a
dangerous situation. Especially dangerous are wet grass clippings. Some say
they are akin to riding over a sheet of
ice. And a swirling vortex of grass in
the eyes creates its own problem, especially if you are a motorcyclist. A lawsuit filed in Plainfield, IL by a woman

A MOTORCYCLIST?
Q. While r iding my motor cycle, I got
a ticket in northern Michigan. The cop
asked for a cash payment of $50.00 on
the spot. When I informed the officer
that I didn't have $50.00 cash, the cop
asked if I had any money at all. I only
had a couple of bucks with me, so the
cop took my license and told me I
would get the license back after the
ticket was paid. I think that sounds bogus. Have you heard of this? ABATE
MEMBER.

$100.00. The officer must then issue a
receipt for this payment and the cash
bond will be returned after the ticket is
satisfied. Payment of the bond is not an
admission of the offense, and you are
free to return to the county of the infraction to contest the ticket at the time
of the scheduled hearing. Some officers will even accompany you to the
nearest U.S. Postal Box and mail the
bond and in some cases the fine.
I got a speeding ticket in Southern Illinois once and had the cash for the fine,
which I gave to the officer per his request. I was then directed to follow the
officer to the nearest mailbox while he
allegedly put my cash into an envelope
and mailed the fine. But the cynical me
always wondered, did he really put my
cash in the envelope? I will never
know. Interestingly, no points were
ever put on my record - hmmm.

will prohibit any future federal funding of motorcycle only roadside

Ethanol blended fuel. Support efforts
to provide a comprehensive assess-
ment of the scientific and technical

research on the implications of the use
of mid-level ethanol blends, and for
other purposes. We are concerned
about the use of E-15 use in motorcy- 
cles since it has already been prohibited by the EPA and manufacturers are
voiding warranties. Support H.R. 21
sponsored by Representative
Sensenbrenner.

Outside Agency interference. Oppose
any federal agencies that are not trans- 
portation related from issuing any
motorcycle related recommendations,
such as the GAO, NTSB and the CDC
have recently done.
Helmet law. Oppose any and all efforts by the federal government to
implement national helmet law.

and driver privacy protection acts
which give vehicle owners the right to 
ownership of the data collected on
vehicle event data recorders. Support
S. 766 sponsored by Senator John
Hoeven.
Internal Revenue Service. Oppose all
attempts of the IRS to limit how
501©(4) organizations currently conduct legislative, political and financial
business.
Obama’s Grow America Act. Oppose
sections 4004 of Obama’s transportation reauthorization proposal that undermines states’ rights when it comes
to motorcycles safety and helmet use.
Autocycle Vehicle Class. Support the
legislation that begins a process to
create a new, separate class of vehicles to remove non-motorcycles from
the current motorcycle vehicles classification . S.685 introduced by Senator
David Vitter addresses this issue, but
it is not a permanent solutions in its
current form, because it does not address non-enclosed vehicles.

Hello from Northwest region co-coordinators
Sandy Murrell & Bud Lein.
First let's keep Chris, Sandy's better half lol, in
our thoughts & prayers. As many of you know
he has a very nasty illness that they seem to
have found early. As I write this, Chris and
Sandy’s spirits remain high and treatment
seems to be working. Let's hope this continues
to be the case, keep those prayers coming. His
illness got me thinking about this brotherhood
we call ABATE . A year ago I didn't know
Chris, now I pray for his health. Chris is family and like any family we may not always get
along, but we should always care about each
other. The same is true for anything ABATE.
If a chapter has trouble it effects the whole
family, we worry about them, we help if we
can, we do what we can. Chapters and people
don't always do the right things but I believe
what is done is for the right reasons. We need
to talk to each other, listen to each other, support each other chapters or individual, it will
only make us a stronger family!

We had a booth set up at Buffalo Range
Shooting Park on their Customer Appreciation Days May 14th. It started out in
the 40’s and continued to get colder
throughout the day. We did sell some
state bike raffle tickets and gave out a lot
of information for ABATE!
Starved Rock had 21 members wash 52
windshields during the IDOT Windshield Wash on Sunday May 15th at the
Willow Creek (Paw Paw) Southbound
Rest Area on I39. They talked with
some bikers from France and some Rt 66
Riders! It was chilly, but they all had a
good time!
Machelle’s Spring Run was on Sunday
May 22nd: There were over 500 participants! This is a run to benefit Relay for
Life Team: Dawn's Apostle Creed X3.
We had an ABATE Booth set up during
sign up! We sold some state bike raffle
tickets, signed up some new members
and renewed several members as well.

We had our Monthly Meeting on Sunday
June 5th at Mike's Brownstone Pizza in
Troy Grove, Illinois. Mike made pizzas,

chances for cash prizes, but also got out
and rode for the day, stopped at places
they normally would not have stopped,
made new friends, and had fun. Other
rides are being planned between the two
groups and anyone is welcome to join
them.

Motorcycle Safety and Awareness:
May was "Motorcycle Awareness Month”
and proclamations were signed by the
towns of Yorkville, Sandwich, and Plano;
villages of Oswego and Somonauk; and
townships of Little Rock and DeKalb
County. Our chapter helped raise awareness with newspaper/electronic sign/radio
PSAs and washing windshields/passing
out literature and mementos at the Sandwich Casey’s.

Well by the time you see this article it
will be the month of July and we will
be gearing up for the Blackhawk River
Rally on July 16th,. There will be 2
bands, vendors, food, bike games,
raffles and silent auction items all at
Len Browns North Shore Inn, right
along the Rock River. You can still
get advance sale tickets by one for $10
and get one free up till the rally. Otherwise $10 at the gate per person day
of event. If you want advance tickets
give me a call and we will get a pair in

Also this year for our River Rally we
will be raffling off the following: 1st
place Marlin 30-30 lever action rifle,
2nd place Kel Tec pistol 9MM and 3rd

Happy summer here in the DuKane
Chapter! We have had a busy Motorcycle Awareness Month in May starting
with a great interview on WGN TVNEWS with Sarah Jindra. The piece
brought an emotional face to the importance of being aware when riding as
well as the motorist driving distracted. The families that gave their time
and stories to our chapter struck a chord
and its impact was not only emotional
but gave us a renewed sense of keeping
up the fight against distracted driving
and what the rider goes through on the
streets today. I want to thank all of the
participants and Senator Tom Cullerton
for being part of that great day. Also in
May our chapter hit the street corners.
Well not in the sense you might think,
but several of our members picked a
corner along RTE 47 which is a welltravelled road out here and held up signs
such as “Don’t Text and Drive”, “Watch
For Motorcyclists” and other awareness
posters and banners to let the motoring
public to be aware. We counted 65 texting and cell phone users in the short
time frame of 2 hours and we were
shocked at the brazenness of these driv-
ers. We do have a problem in this society where people just don’t care about the
law. I am hoping that we made a little
impact that day on at least one driver.
By the time this is printed we will have
had our first run of the season. The Annual Kneeze in the Breeze run is where
we just get out and ride. No multiple
stops, long route and the joy of the
road. On July 23 we are having our
Annual Bikini Bike Wash. This fun
event turns into a block party year after
year and it is good exposure bringing
what ABATE does to the community. In August on the 14th we will have
our 7th Annual Women’s Run. This is
always a great event supporting the
women in motorcycling whether she is a
rider or a passenger, it celebrates all the
great things women do for our community. I am hoping that you all have a safe
summer and that you get a lot of miles
on your bike. Stay Safe! Ride Free!

We had a very nice turn out for our May
29th pig roast. Plenty to see and do with
or without kids. Weather sunny and hot
and the 3 bands rocked us all day and
half the night.
The bike show had everything from
hardtail jockey Panhead to custom painted soft tail springers. The pulled pork
was outstanding! Thanks to all members
who worked so hard to make everything
run smooth. Kudos to Rob Shaw our
activities co-coordinator for the start to
finish planning.
Leo on the other hand was busily teaching valuable personal lessons--- to Myself!!
Robin @ 8am made bacon and pancakes
w/ all kinds of berries & maple syrup
[delicious] but then I worked in the garage for several hours kick starting an old
Harley to life for a friend. Then Robin
and I jumped on our bikes for a 2 hour
ride for fun [ lets go the long way ] yah I
grabbed water and even a Gatorade for
hydration. @4pm We got to the party,
bands kicking, Sun getting hot, signed in
and was told to put bike into the show. I
moved the Shovel into place, stood up to
party and SAT right back down again. I
was a little dizzy and my eyes didn’t
want to focus. “I’ll sit here and feel better in no time” said to myself. I drank my
water and Gatorade, sitting and talking
with friends who rolled their bikes over.
My oldest friend ‘Tik’ looks me in the
eyes and asked if I feel all right, that I
looked a little pale. I told him and others
about my dizziness and eye focus. Hydrated? Hell yah as I finished the water.
Short story first; many good friends
stopped by or brought me more water
and watched over me. They left the band,
shade, food and A/C to hang out in the
no shade street with me. I made it to the
bench by the Legion’s door, had more
water and someone handed me a beer
cup… of pulled pork. [delicious] I started feeling better and some focus came
back. A small group escorted me down
the stairs into the basement bar. I really
felt the Love when I heard side bets on
‘how many stairs’ I could bounce off.
In the cool basement and a full plate of
food, I became myself again. My whole
personal lesson took 90minutes to 2
hours. I taught myself I don’t have the
energy reserve I had just a few short
years ago. I need to pay attention to myself and take the time to EAT!!!

Greetings brothers and sisters. The weather has been
great for riding, hope all of you are out
getting your wind therapy. Our Rally in
the Valley has come and gone. Friday
night was bike night with Mike Stechman as M.C. The crowd was great and
the music was super. Saturday started
out with a few sprinkles, but then the
clouds broke up and the sun came out.
We had approximately 114 attend the
bike ride in the morning. With the return
to the Legion around 4:30, the bike
games commenced. The crowd wasn't as

busy. Between work schedules, family
happenings it is sometimes tough to volunteer for anything extra. Just want to
say Thank You to everyone that gives up
their spare free time for ABATE. Without you we wouldn't be the organization
that we are.
Please be careful when riding through
road construction this time of the
year. Be aware of the road conditions
and the other drivers. Show respect for
the workers by slowing down. We see
quite a bit of this though the summer

good as Friday night, but that was more
pertained to Saturday having an entry
free as compared to Friday night being
free admission. Still, the food was great
and the refreshments flowed. I would
like to thank Freebird, Peo-Taz, and
Spoon River for the help and the success
of the rally. Without volunteers, the rally
would not be what it is. Thanks to those
who slaved and toiled in the kitchen to
turn out the fantastic food. Thanks to
Darrin for the pulled pork, which was
darn tasty. To the cook who made the
brisket and the brisket n beans, those
were great too. In fact all the food was
scrumptious and delicious! Kudos to
those who donated food and helped out.
The bands Saturday evening were great
also. Everyone had a great time. Can't
wait for next year!
The temperature is now heading
into the hot zone so be prepared. Keep
hydrated, take frequent stops to cool
down, and always, apply sunscreen to
your exposed parts of your skin. Be
aware of construction delays and lane
reductions. And always remember that
posted speeds in work zones are enforced even if there are no workers
around. Be aware of the wild life and
keep vigilant when riding, especially at
night. T-Clock your bike each time you
prepare to go for a ride. And always look
more than twice when turning or entering an intersection. Keep a good lookout
for motorists because they don't seem to
keep an eye for us. Be prepared to take
evasive action to attempt to avoid the
confrontation. Hope everyone have a
safe and enjoyable ride.

Central IL ABATE has a full schedule
of events coming up. We just had 2
rides with good attendance. The weather cooperated with both rides which
made it so nice. Our next scheduled ride
will be our Night Flight on July 30th
with signup at Nees HD in Galesburg
from 1-3 pm. I hear this is going to be a
great ride with some good miles.
We have 3 scheduled bike nights that we
are putting on this summer. Our first
one was just done June 10 at Gimpys in
Rio. What a good turnout and fun
night. Our other 2 will be July 8th at
The Corral in Galesburg and August
19th at The Woodshed in Monmouth. Our annual Chip Trip is also set

for the winner at the end. Speaking of
the Bash, plans are coming together for
the weekend. This will be the 35th year
of this event happening August 2628. A lot of fun things are scheduled
with Sunday being the day to draw the
lucky winner of the 883 Iron Sportster
that we are giving away. Tickets available for $3 each, 2 for $5 or a whole book
for $25.

at Nees Open House on July

Hello everyone. Hope all is going well with summer in full
swing. Remember to keep yourself tuned up especially in this
heat; drink plenty of fluids like
sport drinks and water, not alcohol or sugary drinks and take
breaks, don't want to hear about
you getting sick.
Ok, if your chapter is having an
event whether a poker run or an
outing, make sure the ones running the event or working it are
easily identifiable so if a stranger
has a question they will
know who to ask. Just get shirt
with your chapter logo on it and

The June meeting was held before
the Summer Bash. Ken Mense,
Safety and Education officer,
brought to our attention about the
road conditions. In your travels,
be it by bike or auto, if you encounter bad road conditions report
it at www.roadhazard.org or call
Ken (8153835156). He said if
you call him, he will pester people
in charge until something gets
done.
Vice President Rey Montez
brought up the possible chances
of motorcycle checkpoints being
set up this summer. So, stay legal, insurance, license and registration all up to date.
It seems to me as if our chapter is
being tested for tenacity, with the
cold for the poker run and rain for
our summer bash. I must admit
not favorable conditions for either
event, but in true State Line Riders fashion we showed it doesn't
matter to us. Well done, people. The Summer Bash started
soggy but the rain stopped and a
great time was had by all. The
turnout of people was much better
than hoped for, considering the
weather. Porkchop, Big Tim,
Vance and Josh cooked up a ton
of killer food. Big thanks to the

know, the one who has a question might be a future member
and we all know we need members.
July 23 we will be having a one
night camp out (see the flyer ) in
Cerra Gordo Il at the Piatt County fair ground we will have a the

We had a great bunch of ladies
who did a superb job with the
raffles and drawings. Take a bow
ladies, you deserve it.;
Big shout out to Redneck Son for
another fine performance. A lot
of talent in that family.
You had to be there to see Nick
rocking the leather skirt. Kinda
matched his beard. We are a diverse, dysfunctional group of people, but we sure work well together and just click!
On that note, we gained several
new members to our chapter. Drinks, music, food, fire, old
friends and new friends. What
could be better, if you know,
show up at a meeting and let us in
on it.
The July meeting will be held at
Kettles Bar and Grill in Roberts,
on the 23rd at 1:00 and the August meeting will be at the
Hoopeston VFW on the 20th at
1:00.

everyone,
Well summer is definitely here! Lots of warm
days out there to be riding...please be careful
and ride safe. Our chapter kicked off summer
with about 20 of us attending Summer Boogie. Thank you to everyone at Eastern’s
chapter for showing us a great time. I am pretty confident that we helped Joe P. Celebrate
his birthday with some great memories. We
have State party coming up and I for one am
looking forward to it. The officer elections
were held at our June meeting and as mentioned in the last paper we now have a few
new ones on board. Clean up has started at
Ray's and we can n use all the help we can
get! Keep checking the Facebook page for
updates on times and dates. Brandi (newly
elected activities coordinator ) is working
hard to get the party together for everyone.
We will also be helping out with the Grand
Nationals in Peoria on August 13th. We have
been helping our fellow Peo/Taz chapter with
this for a long time. If you would like to come
out and help us come to the July chapter
meeting and get your name on the list. The
July chapter meeting is also when we will be
voting on the next recipient for the Gus Miller Award which will be announced at Chiggerfest. This award is given to a member who
we feel has shown amazing support and dedication to our chapter and ABATE as a
whole. So come to a meeting and use your
VOICES. The chapter meetings are held the
1st THURSDAY of each month with the activities meeting held on the last Thursday of
each month. They are held at the Eagles in
Bloomington starting at 7pm. As always
please remember that this is YOUR CHAPTER. We need to hear your ideas and suggestions to make it grow and be the best chapter
we can be....PLUS I'm tired of only seeing the
same faces (not that I don't love to see those
that faithfully come to every meeting). UNTIL next month ride safe and remember that
Freedom isn't Free.

May 2016 Newsletter
The Heartland ABATE Chapter met at
KrossRoads in Cullom on May 15, 2016.
The meeting was opened with the Pledge
of Allegiance.
President Brian Pratt led the meeting.
Mark motioned to approve the April meeting minutes as reported in the State Paper,
with a second by Joe. The motion carried.
Sony King gave the Treasurer’s report,
and it was accepted.
Brian gave the Legislative report. Be cautious at fuel pumps. Some stations are
selling E-15/Ethanol fuel without pumps
well marked. If you observe improperly
marked pumps, report it. E-10 is still
available. Representative Tom Bennett
supports ABATE with the Ethanol issues.
The Nascar sweeper driver has donated a
$10,000 spot on the track sweeper near
the Low Side Window promoting
“ABATE of ILLINOIS”.

for Beneficiary Information as an ABATE
member if you choose to use the insurance provided. If you provide the information, be prepared for them to contact
you.
2 people have resigned from PACT due to
problems occurring.
The State Safety and Education Coordinator has been asked to step down from his
position or get the necessary help to complete the duties of his position.

The Broomstick Pool Tournament did not
have a good turnout.
The Heartland Memorial Run will be held
on Saturday, May 21 with sign up begin-

Vice President Glenn reported that a picture of the Motorcycle Awareness Proclamation with the
mayors from Mattoon and Charleston
were in the Journal Gazette. On June 4th
Glenn & Bonnie Brunson attended, along
with Tim and Cathy Floyd a first responder's event at one of Liberty's sponsor’s
Coziahr's Harley Davidson dealership.
Later Gary Reynolds and Jeff Hill showed
up to watch some of the presentations.
The event had State police officers and
Macon county officers doing a safety
presentation on motorcycles. The event
was very good. Macon County officer
showed the difference on braking and how
long it took to brake at different speeds for
sudden stops on the police motorcycles. A
lot of very important info was discussed in
these classes which were free to the public. From Praireland ABATE, Jodi West
Safety/Education Coordinator, also attended this presentation. She will be conducting more events in the very near future
open to the public at Coziahr's Harley
Davidson dealership, which I highly recommend to all to try to take time to make
one or more of these classes. Thanks to
Gary for the Family Fun Day. It was a
success!
Liberty, Crossroads, and Old River
ABATE chapters participated in the windshield wash. We washed 117 windshields
and handed out info from IDOT on Motorcycle awareness.

Trails End in Campus. They are looking
for help to leapfrog with marbles, 50/50
sales. Donations have been promised at all
the businesses on the stops. Lots of fliers

run in addition to the fall run that is being
planned.
Sylvie reported on Products. New shirts
are available.
Julie gave the Membership report. We
currently have 115 members.
Safety and Education was discussed.
Doug and Lisa are interested in helping
Bernard in classrooms when school starts
in the fall.
Al reported on Public Relations. Fliers
have been distributed in a large radius for
the Memorial Run.
Thanks to a small group that turned out
for the Windshield Wash at the Southbound Rest Area on 55, with information
distributed, windshields washed and Motorcycle Awareness discussed with interested travelers.
The ATV/Off Road Park proposal for
340+ acres of Prison property near Pontiac hasn’t gotten much response back from
Tom Bennett. It was suggested to turn the
proposal over to the DNR.
OLD BUSINESS
Sony presented a letter from Ride for the
Cure. The date is changing from May to
October for the ride this year. This is the
20th year for the ride out of Peoria. Bob
motioned to donate $100 this year (same
as in the past) with a second by Joe. The
motion carried. With the donation a Tshirt will be received. A size XL will be
requested and a raffle will be held for
fundraising.
Brian reported on the 9 mm gun that
Heartland ABATE won in the state raffle.
Plans are being made to have the gun delivered to Pontiac Pawn with 500 tickets
to be sold to raffle it off. Tickets will be
$5 each or 6 for $20.
The Summer Boogie will be June 3-5, it
will be combined with the Regional Party.
The State Party will be June 23-26 at the
Menard County Fairgrounds.
Chiggerfest dates TBA.
Craig suggested inviting other chapters to
our Memorial/Poker Runs. Craig made a
motion to hold a “Membership Drive” at
the Memorial Run with the Run fee
waived with a new membership (amended
to: former membership must be expired
for 1 year) purchased at sign up. Couples
memberships also eligible, with a second
by Sylvie. The motion carried.
The 50/50 raffle was won by Lynne with a
$14 cash prize.
Thanks to KrossRoads for providing the
meeting room for the membership meeting.
It was suggested to contact the Pontiac
Cruise Night about the possibility of a
“bike night” along with cruise night.
Upcoming riding opportunities were mentioned:
Freedom Run on June 18 to honor fallen
heroes and support the troops.
June 18 is also an opportunity to ride to
the Manteno Veterans’ Home to help
serve a meal to the veterans. Duane Beal
plans the meal and has made this an annual event and donates all the food.
Bob made a motion to adjourn the meeting with a second by Lump. The motion
carried and the meeting adjourned.

Family Fun Day as we welcome these new
members we say thank you for joining.
I thank ALL who participated in Liberty's
1st annual Family Fun Day. Kids enjoyed
themselves, playing on water slides, badminton, etc. as the parents and friends that
came enjoyed a nice relaxing day at Lincoln Log Cabin State Park. A lot of food
was prepared, thanks to Gary Reynolds
who was our chief. Good job Gary cooking up the hamburgers and hot dogs that
was furnished by Liberty ABATE. Thanks
to everyone who brought a dish as water
was provided, and yet many brought soft
drinks. Many took advantage to check out
the museum at the center, and walked
around the park seeing the animals with
their families and friends. Seriously was
great seeing the kids enjoy themselves for
the day by running, playing, and laughing.
It was good.
Those who participated from Liberty
After folks left, a few of us stopped in at
Gary Reynolds house to help him unload
his grill and supplies. Well that took a
while and his fridge went dry. Ha...Thanks

Legislative/State Board –
Joel Wannenmacher reported not much is
going on. We are in limbo with the bills.
June 18 is the next State Board meeting
and they will be discussing whether they
should remove the current Safety & Education coordinator for not performing the
duties of the office. They are also discussing adding an amendment to the bylaws to
make the minutes of the State Board meetings available to the general membership.
If anyone wishes to see the minutes, let
Joel know. If anyone wishes to attend the
meeting you can ride with Joel. Dennis
Arnold recommended everyone should
attend at least one State Board meeting.

June 2016 Newsletter
The June meeting was held at The Finish
Line in Chenoa on Thursday June 9th at
6:05pm with 7 members attending. After
calling us to order, Kerry led us in the
Pledge of Allegiance.

AMA has a petition going about E15. All

apologize for missing last month’s letter,
and want to thank those who missed me.
Our June meeting was well attended,
thanks to all the members who came.
Hey Kids…
So did you miss me? I apologize for being
absent for the last few months. No real
good excuse except that I have been busy
as hell! I know, poor Smitty, boo hoo hoo!
Anyways, here I am, for a minute.
Not much to report really. I did get into all
of my schools this spring, Tville twice. I
believe I did a total of about 15 presentations and I received good feedback from
the students and the instructors. There may
be a new video for the Safety & Ed presentation coming later this year. If so, I will
I bet everyone is enjoying some great
rides so far. Just a reminder our meetings are the first Saturday of the month
at 1pm. Our membership is steadily
increasing, so everyone remember you
do not have to own a bike to be a member and help keep our rights as motorcyclists as well as encouraging others to
be motorcycle aware. At our last meeting we began discussing our Annual
Backwoods Biker Bash and will be
working on forming this year’s committee. I do not have a lot to report as we
are still in our beginning stages of getting the chapter up and running. We do
need more of our members to come to
the meetings to let us know what they
are looking for our chapter to do this
summer. I am not sure if we will be in
the Sullivan 4th of July parade or not, it
kind of depends on if we find a trailer
big enough to pull for our float. I do

30th. This event also celebrates Iron Riders 25th year!! Please attend this run and

begins at the SIT-N-BULL in Hudson

1:00. Last stop is KICKS in Towanda. There will be live music from 4:006:00 and an silent auction. Naturally all
bring it to a meeting and share it with everyone.

steady at about 135. Hopefully by the time
you read this we will have some new members after the bike night at the VFW. I
hope you were there and that you had fun!

should finally have our gun raffle tickets. I
am to blame for them not being here sooner. However, I do not think we should have
any trouble selling 300 tickets. New to the
gun raffle this year, whoever sells the winning ticket will win $100! We will keep
tabs on who has what number tickets so
that we can pay that prize out.

ride. On another note, I know my

We have three new members we would
like to salute; Mich, Dan and Larry,
We are in the planning stages for our annual fall party at the fairgrounds. There may
be a couple new attractions this year, so I
hope you can join us. The dates for this
year are Sept 23rd and 24th. The final Ride
N Roll stop will be at the beer tent at 7pm
on that Friday. Our Saturday night entertainment will be provided The Antics. The
Friday show is still to be determined, but if
the band we have in mind pans out, it will
be REALLY cool! I don’t want to jinx it,
but here’s a hint, for those about to rock,
you will love the band we are working on.
I will hope to give you a little more to look
at next month, but for now I gotta run.

We are looking to kick the month of July
off with our family camping trip. The trip
will take place at Caboose Lake
Campgrounds in Remington, IN. This
will be an all weekend event including
beach day starting Friday July 15th
through Sunday July 17th. Hope to see

On Saturday June 25th Hubbard Trail
hosted a memorial run for our fallen
brother Jeff Anderson. Our run started at
Traditions in Watseka, IL and ended with
a cook out at Haun Park in Crescent City,
IL. Would like to thank everyone who
participated in this great event for a great
man!

meeting of Shoal Creek ABATE was
held on Sunday, June 5th at Bernadini’s.
The meeting was called to order by
President Elmer Nordyke. Pledge of
allegiance was led by Al McDowell.
There was no secretary’s report. Treasurer’s report was given by Terrie
VanHuss. The Southwest Region report
was given and Marble Run books are
still available to purchase. The Legislative report was given by Jim Pryor. Updates were given on current legislation.
Membership reported on current membership. There was no Safety & Education report.
Sam Robinson has State Party tickets
available for advanced sales if you
would like to purchase some. There was
nothing new to report for Newsletter,
Products or Public Relations.
Fallen Riders committee is working on
the Veteran’s Run. It will be on Saturday, July 9, 2016, with signup at the
Greenville VFW. Registration will be
from 10-11 am, with kickstands up at
11:15 a.m. to start the ride.

Seems like the older I get
the faster time goes by.
It's the middle of June and we just had our monthly
meeting. Just when I think we won't have a quorum or
close to it, thirty people show up. I guess moving the
meeting around doesn't hurt one bit. We normally have
our meetings at the Cottage Hills VFW and this month
we had it at the Wood River Eagles Club. Change was
good. We had a great meeting, and between Woody
Wittrock and Bob Myers the info given out tonight
about legislation was great. Once again the off road
parks are being discussed and several of our bills are
just waiting on a signature. Seems like there was a feeling of accomplishment tonight within the chapter. One

being cold and rainy to just plain HOT!
Last months meeting we all wore coats,
this month, not so much. Riding in the
heat---STAY HYDRATED, drink plenty
of water, getting dehydrated will affect
your riding skills, and with today’s drivers you have to stay aware and be ready
to move at all times. Also, important to
check your bike, low tire pressures and
heat do not mix well!
Had our meeting yesterday at Waterstreet in Evansville, had 5 members present. We held a moment of silence for
our sister, Sarah Schilling, who was
killed in a truck accident. Went through

passed to purchase a brick by the chapter for Ashley for the wall in Benton. It
was also decided to donate the trophies
for the fair events this year.

puts up money or buys the trophies, for
now pending further discussion. Also
got get Rhett some information to put up
at Bars in Chester, I will get him some
info. Membership drawing went to a bar
patron that had bought tickets.

Hi My Brothers & Sisters, The Monday
of Memorial Day weekend I got that
phone call that we all dread. You know
that one that comes later in the evening
and starts like this," Hey Brother there
has been a bad motorcycle wreck, have
you heard who it was? Then over the
next hour or so the horrid details start
coming in and your heart slowly breaks.
I know that this is a part of the life style
that we choose to be apart of but damn it
still hurts. RIP Terry & Rhonda. As the
weather improves and more of us get
out and about on our bikes, please be
extra vigilant and ride defensively.
Watch out for the idiots.
I want to remind everyone that one of
our main principles and a main part of
our mission is to be involved politically
with those politicians that support mo-
torcyclist rights and issues. Get ahold of
your local state representatives and offer
to help in their campaigns. Wear your
A.B.A.T.E. gear and be sure they know
where you are from, this will make Bob
Myers ( Legislative Coordinator) and
Todd our Lobbyist jobs easier. Get out
and walk in the parades, put out the
signs, man the phone banks, and do any
of the labor intense jobs that every campaign needs to get done. Become that go

have been quiet busy this last couple of
months. We worked an event at the Granada Theater, had a couple of poker
runs, one of which was a night ride, and
passed out Gatorade for the Run For The
Wall. Several different groups of us have
attended political events and walked in
parades with endorsed candidates.
Our June meeting was held at Bubba's in
Nason. Our July meeting will be on the
9th at Lowery's Irish Pub. Notice that
this is the second Saturday of the month,
the first being during the 4th of July
weekend. we will be finishing the details
for the "Pay It Forward" Charity
Event on July 16th. We have flyers out
on both the event and on the Vendors/
Craft fair that we are putting together.
There have been over 60 vendors invited
to set up that morning in the parking lot
behind Lowery's, they will be setting up
from around 7am, the Poker run sign up
starts about 8:30 with the ride leaving at
10. We will be back from the ride around
2 with the Bike games going from 2:30
til about 6:30. We will also have both a
silent and live auction and various raffles
and 50/50 drawings. Make sure and get
your sponsorships in to Carrie by the
25th of June, so we will have time to get
the t-shirts printed up. Our goal is to
make at least $1000 for each of the charities. If everyone does their part that goal

Our August 6th meeting is at Chops II in
Ashley. On August 26 & 27 we are having our annual campout and cardboard
boat races. They will be out at Truman
Sellers's place out on E. Hawk Rd Mt.
Vernon, this event just keeps growing
and I am looking forward to this years
races. I want to challenge everyone and
the other chapters to build a boat and
COME JOIN THE FUN.

food, Bands, Auction and Party. The Shelter pets will be arriving at Arizona Joes by
limousine and walk the red carpet. Come
help us raise money to get these pets
adopted and maybe take one home yourself. We will have shirts and tickets for
