MeMbers get
the hottest Music
all suMMer long.
This summer, catch the latest and greatest indie acts live at Yonge-Dundas Square
every Friday night. And if you’re a Virgin Mobile Member, you’ll get the best seats
in the house.
YOUR BEST BET THIS SUMMER
Join us at Toronto’s favourite gathering place.
Yonge-Dundas Square is a unique focal point in
downtown Toronto where our communities
come together. A decidedly urban space, it’s a
public piazza and an outdoor event venue that
annually holds hundreds of events of various
sizes. Since opening to the public in 2002 the
Square has produced hundreds of our own
special events for the community, and hosted
more than 1500 other events including
community, arts and cultural festivals,
promotions, media launches, and other unique
one of a kind gatherings, attended by literally
millions people.
On quiet days, the Square is a welcome respite
from the hectic pace of downtown life, offering
an oasis of water fountains, some of the best
buskers the city has to offer, café seating and
several site amenities including free Wi-Fi
access, TTC subway access, a sightseeing and
information kiosk, and the T.O. TIX ticket booth.

This summer we are once again going to
provide you with a one of a kind urban
experience. Join us for Lunchtime Live! to give
a drab weekday that badly needed boost you
can only get from live music. Or check out the
high energy Indie Fridays concert series
presented by Virgin Mobile on Friday nights.
We’ll be featuring some of the hottest indie
acts so you can say “I saw them when...” Also
this summer our popular City Cinema series
returns, this time with screenings of classic cult
films. These offbeat films often come with their
own dedicated groups of fans, despite some
having limited commercial success and some
are SO bad they’re good. In any case, we
chose these films because each is absolutely
brilliant in their own quirky way. So come at
sundown to join us for some cinematic
craziness!
Check out the calendar inside this guide and
join us for another hot summer in the city.
Almost all events are free of admission.

Terra Hazelton &
Her Easy Answers
Genie-nominated Terra Hazelton is a singer, actor, and
radio personality. Best known for her years as the front
woman of Jeff Healey’s Jazz Wizards or for her role of
Trish in the cult-classic Fubar II, Terra is hitting the stage
with Her Easy Answers on the bandstand. She will lead
you back to a world of arch-top guitars, heartthrob sidemen
and the classy dames who ruled them. It’s a throw-back
to the jazz and blues of the 20’s and 30’s, renewed.

Blessed with an achingly distinct voice, reminiscent of Iris
De Ment, Jadea Kelly tours internationally opening for the
likes of Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, The Good Lovelies and
Catherine MacLellan. Jadea’s 2010 release, Eastbound
Platform, garnered her a Canadian Folk Music Awards
nomination for Best New Artist of the Year. Jadea can be
heard on CBC Radio LIVE and recently, as a guest on
Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Cafe.
Toronto singer-songwriter Emma-Lee has one of those
rare voices that will stop you dead in your tracks. Her big
break came in 2008, overcoming two potentially careerfatal injuries to her vocal cords, she independentlyreleased her debut ‘Never Just A Dream’ and garnered
immediate critical acclaim, a national tour, key festival
spots, heavy radio play on the CBC, multiple film &
television placements and a national TV appearance
followed leaving hordes of loyal fans in her wake.

Joshua Panda
Joshua Panda is an exceptional combination of country
and soul music. At age three he started singing gospel
music at Rockwell Baptist Church in Mooresville North
Carolina. He adopted the gospel hand wave, the rhythm,
the wailing, and most importantly the embodiment of
spirit. Integrating soulful energy into his original pieces,
Joshua has captured a spirit in his performance, which
encompasses both the flailing of a fervent preacher and
the intimacy of your best friend telling you a story.

Tanika Charles
Since stepping out of her role as a back-up vocalist for
both Zaki Ibrahim and Bedouin Soundclash to front her
own fiery, 60’s Motown influenced band, Tanika Charles
(or, as she is often known when in full loveable soul diva
mode: Mz Chawls) has quickly become the most buzzed
about soul singer in Toronto. Blessed with both an
incredible voice and a larger than life personality,
Tanika has garnered rave reviews for her electrifying,
not-to-be-missed performances.

Rococode
Based in Vancouver, BC, Rococode is fronted by the dueling
vocals of Andrew Braun and Laura Smith and propelled by
the powerful rhythm section of Johnny Andrews and Shaun
Huberts (Tegan & Sara). They strive to create music that is
equal parts arty, accessible, sexy, sweet, badass, bent and
beautiful. Their debut ‘Guns, Sex and Glory’, produced by
Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother) and mixed by John
Congleton (St. Vincent, Pink Mountaintops, Polyphonic
Spree) was released in early 2012.

Harlan Pepper
Formed in 2008, Harlan Pepper are four young
men from Hamilton playing music with an old soul.
Channeling the ghosts of long-gone AM car radios
and haunting the dusty aisles of small town vinyl record
bins, the band, Jimmy Hayes, Dan Edmonds, Thompson
Wilson, and Marlon Nicolle, barely out of high school are
already an accomplished live band sharing the stage
with the likes of the Sadies, the Arkells, and Feist and
toured all through 2011 in support of their debut album,
‘Young And Old’.

Beer garden 4:00-11:00PM
Zeppelinesque is Canada’s best Led Zeppelin tribute act, and
for years has been blowing the socks off such stages as The
Opera House, Lee’s Palace and The Horseshoe Tavern. Their
extensive catalogue of songs includes masterpieces like
“Dazed and Confused”, “Heartbreaker” and “Kashmir” as
well as obscure fan favourites like “In The Light”. Frank
Nevada’s voice is a dead ringer for Robert Plant and the
entire band has a huge passion for Zeppelin’s magic.

The Beauties
The Beauties were formed in 2006 at a tavern in the west
end of Toronto. Darin McConnell and Shawn Creamer share
guitar and vocal duties, Jud Ruhl streams the lead guitar
while Paul Phisterer and Derek Downham keep time as the
unapologetically stoic rhythm section. A four-song, selftitled EP quickly established The Beauties as a band to
watch out for, earning them coveted support slots with
acts such as Broken Social Scene and Alejandro Escovedo.
Three years later, they continue to remind the crowds of
the tightly-knit seams that stem from rock and roll!

Paper Lions
The Bright Light
Social Hour
Paper Lions cross genres and generations with their poprock, folk, blues, barbershop show. Their energy, passion
and sheer musicianship have been bringing audiences to
their feet (legitimately) everywhere from concert halls, to
clubs, to outdoor festivals. Full of talent, personality, and
phenomenal originality, Paper Lions are destined to be
your new favourite live band. Paper Lions won Pop
Recording of the Year from the East Coast Music Awards.
They have performed with Cake, illScarlett, Collective
Soul, The Watchmen, CCR, and many others.
The Bright Light Social Hour is an American rock band
from Austin, Texas who has built their growing reputation
through exhilarating widely-acclaimed live shows. They
released their debut full-length album in late 2010,
utilizing the best elements of vintage and modern
recording and just released “New Year’s Live,” a 4-track
live EP recorded during their sold-out set at The Parish
Austin on New Year’s 2011 and touring nationwide
steadfast in their singular aim - enduring rock and roll!

Sunparlour Players

The Magnificent 7’s
Sunparlour Players have become a collective, 3 unique and
creative individuals who embrace both the dark and light in
their songs. Dusty landscapes, rural backdrops and
desolate times: themes that wouldn’t be out of place in a
Cormac McCarthy novel are matched with the fervour and
joy of a gospel revival, usually all within one song. On
stage, Sunparlour Players take their fans through a roller
coaster of emotion and energy, thunderous stomping one
moment and delicate strumming the next, always backed
by the bands boundless energy.
FREE ADMISSION
From their Winnipeg, MB home, the Magnificent 7’s have
traveled thousands of miles, touring incessantly. This 5
piece band features the incredible vocals of stand up
bassist Ida Sawabe, Guitarists TJ Blair and Matt Magura,
Old Time fiddling of Andy Bart and machine gun banjo
picking and deadly slide guitar of David Nishikawa. They
maintain a 100% acoustic live show while blurring the lines
between bluegrass, old time country and rock and roll.

Samantha Martin
and The Haggard
One of the rising stars of Toronto’s roots-rock scene, Samantha
Martin and the Haggard pay tribute to the classic R&B, Soul, Rock
and Country Stars of years gone by in a way that few today do. Recent
comparisons include Adele and Amy Winehouse. Samantha’s voice
“is a force of nature”, she’s the ”real deal”. For the Yonge-Dundas
Square show Samantha and the Haggard are joined by Gospel Divas,
The Tonettes (Amoy and Ciceal Levy and Marlene O’Neill).

Young Rival
This trio hails from Hamilton, Ontario, a city most widely-known for its
blue-collar work ethic - a quality that Young Rival have always proudly
embraced. With a sound that is both raw and hazy, dark and melodic,
this band delivers an undeniably unique brand of grit-infused, wildcat
rock and roll. With shows and tours alongside The Sadies, Born
Ruffians and Tokyo Police Club, this young band occupies a unique
- and important - position in today’s indie landscape with glowing
reviews from press outlets across Canada, including 4 star write-ups
in both major Toronto weeklies, NOW and EYE WEEKLY.

their first show in the backroom of The Cameron House and have gone

Folk, Ottawa Blues and Montreal Jazz), release four critically
acclaimed recordings and have been featured on radio, television and

Cuff The Duke
After almost ten years as a band and four albums to its credit,
Toronto’s road-warriors Cuff the Duke have made … a concept
record. Eleven tracks on a theme that flow like a film, like a good
book, one filled with emotional highs and lows, plot twists, and
universal truths. “Morning Comes” is a story about change, about
confronting loss, about – as one track calls it -- “Standing on the
Edge” and having the courage to look across to an unknown future
on the other side. This album was produced by Blue Rodeo’s Greg
Keelor and is the first part of a two part album.
