January 2016
FROM THE DESK OF SUPERINTENDENT
JOHN DENNEY...
2015 was a great year to be a Comet! Our students excelled in the classroom and in athletics,
and they continue to be great assets to our community. Our staff has worked hard to provide the
best atmosphere for learning and the best educational opportunities around. Our district has become one of the best all-around districts in the
area. We look forward to another great year! Following are more details regarding our academics,
facilities and calendar.
ACADEMICS: For the fir st time last Mar ch,
many of our students took the M-STEP exams
which replaced the long-time MEAP test in order
to assess their progress. Our students scored higher than the state and county average on a majority
of the assessments. The Michigan Department of
Education recently released the final score reports. For the last time, our junior class took the
ACT; MDE has changed to administering the
SAT for 2016. Our district outscored the other
districts throughout the county in both the composite scores and college readiness. The ACT has
been used as a capstone assessment in order to
determine how well our students have mastered
academic skills throughout their schooling. Our
results are a testament to the hard work of our
students, faculty, staff and administration.
FACILITIES: With the elementary roofing and
entryway project completed in the summer of
2015, our next big sinking-fund project will be to
replace the elementary playground; the current
structure is showing its age. We were able to secure a 100% matching grant in order to provide
our students with an amazing playground consisting of two large play structures, a climbing structure and a new swing set. In an effort save money, we will utilize a program our vendor offers
called “Community Build.” The company will
provide supervision, instruction and the necessary
tools for the construction of the playground, and
we will look for volunteers to help with the labor.
As the summer approaches, we will pick a Saturday and spread the word so volunteers can plan
accordingly. If you know that you are willing to
help, please let me know, and I will be sure to
contact you with the exact
details. The renderings of
two of the new play structures are shown below.
SCHOOL
CALENDAR: Last spring, school
districts throughout the
county investigated the
balanced-calendar concept. Currently, public
schools are forbidden by law to begin school before the first Tuesday after Labor Day. While we
discussed many options for spreading out our
breaks throughout the year, it was apparent
countywide that our communities were not supportive of a 6-8 week summer vacation. There
were, however, several people who spoke about
their desire to have the school year begin prior to
Labor Day. Since the Michigan Department of
Education does allow start-day waivers, under
certain circumstances, the superintendents explored our options.
There were a few reasons for looking into changing our calendar, one of which was a statemandated increase of five days for the 2016-2017
school year. While we looked at calendar options,
we discovered that if we started before Labor
Day, we could end our semester at the holiday
break in December instead of late January. This
is a huge advantage for our high school students
who currently return from the vacation and have
two weeks to prepare for their final exams. Another issue with the calendar is that if we simply
added a full week of classes to the end of the
year, we would be in session into mid-June.
(Continued on page 2)

NE WS LE TTER
(Continued from Page 1)
In late December, we received word that Jackson County’s threeyear waiver request would most likely be approved by MDE. While
we had hoped for more time before potentially making any changes
to the calendar, the waiver process has taken us quite a while. Every
public school board in the county will be discussing this waiver in
the coming weeks and considering a resolution supporting the concept of a common county calendar with a pre-Labor Day start. While
this topic has been discussed many times throughout the last year, a
final decision has not been made yet. Our school board will be ad
dressing this situation at our January board meeting, which may have
already occurred by the time you receive this newsletter. If approved,
we will make sure to communicate the changes to our students and
their families.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns
about our district. Thank you again for your continued support!

TEXTILE RECYCLING
In our quest to continue to be a “green” school, Hanover-Horton
Middle School is now recycling all textiles. This means clothing,
shoes, linens, towels, stuffed animals, belts, purses, accessories,
etc., even if they are worn, torn, or damaged, we can recycle
them! Donations can be placed in the bin located behind the middle
school. At the end of the year, all the pounds collected will be totaled up, and there will be monetary prize for all the recyclables collected from our school. You can help our school raise some funds
while helping the environment at the same time.

COUNSELING NEWS
6th and 8th Grade Breakout Drug Program
In February, the 6th grade students will be participating in the Breakout Drug Education Program given by
Family Services and Children’s Aid. We have offered this impactful program for the past 8 years. Students
will learn facts about the health risks of alcohol, tobacco, inhalants and marijuana. There are fun games and
group exercises that will show them the factors that influence their choices. Students will learn peer refusal
techniques and will have the opportunity to sign pledge cards indicating they will remain substancefree. The 8th graders will have their presentation in March and will learn about additional drugs such as ecstasy and methamphetamines. For more information about this program and on how to talk to your children
about drugs and alcohol, visit www.breakoutdrugfree.org.
8th and 10th Grade Jackson Area Career Center Visit
Each year the 8th and 10th graders have the opportunity to visit programs at the Jackson Area Career
Center (JACC). The visit to the Career Center allows students to learn more about various careers
and to make informed decisions on whether they
would like to attend JACC during their junior and
senior years in high school. Students are often not
aware of the extent of the programs available until
they are able to visit and see first-hand. Many
JACC programs offer high school Michigan Merit
Curriculum Credit, college credit and/or professional
certifications. Students involved in career center
programs have the opportunity to join academic organizations in their field of interest, to become a
member of an honor society and the chance to compete for scholarships. This year the 8th grade visit
will take place on Feb. 4 and the 10th grade visit will
be Feb. 2. We will visit in the afternoon. Students
will have lunch early their visit day so that we can
leave the school by 11:15 am. We will return to the
school at the end of the school day. Please avoid
scheduling any appointments during this
time. While in 8th grade, students will work more on
their Educational Development Plans, or EDPs
where they will explore their interests and career
pathways and begin to plan their high school classes. In May, parents are invited to EDP night to
learn more about and contribute to the plans. Tenth
graders will be able to begin registering for the career center classes for their junior year after their
visit. JACC will be having an Open House on Feb.
25 from 4 to 7 pm for parents and students to learn
more! For more information on JACC, go to
www.jacc-mi.net. Parents and students can get
more information about careers possibilities on the
HH Counseling website.

DaddyDaughter
Dance
The Hanover-Horton
PTA hosted the Daddy-Daughter Dance
on Sunday, November 22nd. The original event was scheduled for Saturday,
November 21st, however it was the first snow storm of the
season. Even with the change in the event date, the PTA had
118 girls attend with their special someone. The event lasted
for 2 hours and included music, dancing, pictures and snacks
for everyone. Myeshia Jones, Miss Jackson County Rose
Queen and Julia Duffrin, Miss Jackson County Teen, signed
autographs, greeted
the girls, danced and
even let the daughters try on their
beautiful
crowns. They were
a huge hit! There
were also prizes
given away for candy guessing jars and
over
15
raffle
items. Snacks consisted of donuts donated from Meckley's, popcorn, pretzels and apples. Raffle items were donated by Edible Arrangements, Jan's Dance Studio, Country Market, Moran Engineering Services, Sara Grant-Partylite and Freadas Legacy. It was
a wonderful event celebrating dads and daughters! Everyone
had a fun time!
Kindergarten Round-Up
Parent Informational Meeting
The elementary will be holding a parent meeting for all incoming kindergartners on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the elementary

*registration forms;
*the different skills we’d like each child to have before entering
Kindergarten;
*what a day at Hanover-Horton looks like;

We are asking parents to bring their incoming kindergartner to the

applied to about 180 colleges! Admission letters will continue rolling in over the next several weeks. Now students
should concentrate on scholarship applications. Students
and families can access the HH Counseling website for scholarship listings as well as financial aid information and FAFSA tutorials. A scholarship information session was held for
interested seniors in December. There will be a Financial
Aid Information Night on Monday, January 11 from 7 to 8
pm in the HH library for families to get more information on
paying for college and applying for federal aid using the
FAFSA. All seniors should complete the FAFSA regardless
of income because many scholarship applications require the
information. The deadline to receive State Aid from Michigan is March 1.
