Dear Parishioners,
Last month, I had the blessing to participate in the ordination to the priesthood of Fr. Michael Manos at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
in Troy, Michigan. It was a memorable day for the Manos family, a historic day for St. Nicholas Church, and an occasion of thanksgiving to God
for all who know Fr. Michael Manos. Every ordination I’ve participated in has given me the opportunity to reflect on the wonders of the priesthood and the essential role the priest plays in the life of the Church and in the lives of his people.
As you well know, priests do not drop from heaven, nor is a man born a priest. They emerge from a worshiping family and faith community.
All of us in one way or another, to a greater or lesser degree participate in the making of a future priest. When we attend and participate in the
sacramental and communal life of the church, people notice and are affected by our presence—or lack thereof. Without our participation in the
life of the church, Sunday School, Greek School, Goya, Hope/Joy, Choir, and many other essential ministries would not be possible. The parish
needs and depends on volunteers committed to the wellbeing of a community’s life and to inspire one another to grow “in grace and knowledge
of Jesus Christ.”
To this point, I remember something His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas once said, “Not everyone who serves as an altar boy becomes a priest,
but every priest was at one time an altar boy.” In other words, to have priests, we must have altar boys. And to have altar boys, a community
needs a priest and an active congregation. Therefore, one may say that the entire parish participates in the gradual making of a priest. And what
a glorious moment it is to witness and participate in the instantaneous making of a priest at the ordination.
On several occasions, I had shared with you that my earliest memories of growing up in our faith took place at St. Nicholas Church, then in
Detroit. My father worked on Sundays and my mother didn’t know how to drive so we depended on aunts and uncles to drive us to church. I have
many wonderful memories going to church with my mother and sister. The old St. Nicholas was a beautiful, majestic Orthodox Church. But what
made the biggest impression on me was a little old man in a gray suit who sat in the second pew from the front on the left side. We sat on the
right side of the church toward the middle.
Every Sunday we attended, he was there no matter what the season. I remember wanting to go to church just to see if he was there—and he was!
I still have this vivid memory of him. No matter the season or the weather, he was there. Later, in my teens, on Sundays that I didn’t feel like
going to church, I would remember that little old man in the gray suit who never missed. He inspired me to rise from bed and go to church. And
I believe that my coming to church over the years eventually inspired me to become a priest. And I attribute a large measure to this decision to
serve the Lord and His people to that little old man. And the wonder of it is that I never saw his face!
My remembrance of him over the years inspired me to come to church and to become involved in the altar, Goya, and eventually the priesthood.
I never saw his face, never learned his name, but he made such an impression on me and he still does. About twenty years after my encounters
with the “little old man in the gray suit at St. Nick’s”, specifically, January 29, 1989, I was ordained a deacon in that same revered church. In fact,
my ordination was the last one conducted at St. Nicholas Church until Sunday, September 27, 2015, when Fr. Michael Manos was ordained! And
I remember being led into the altar through the Royal Doors for the first time, tears were streaming down my cheeks, and the only things that
came to my mind were prayers of thanksgiving to God, for my family, for my seminary professors and friends, for the church I grew up in, and
for that little old man in the gray suit.
Even today, almost twenty-seven years after my ordination, I still thank God for that little old man, who played no small part in my becoming a
priest. I know one day, if I ever make it to heaven that I’ll see him, I’ll see his face and I shall thank him for what he did for me and the countless
people whose lives I touched. If it wasn’t for him, I may never have been a priest!
All of us who attend church regularly on Sundays, in one way or another, directly or indirectly, affect the people around us. We watch what
others say and do. We watch people pray as we pray ourselves. We notice those who are in church and who volunteer at the many activities of our
parish. Imagine, as we grow closer to the Lord by our participation in the life of the Church, we may well be inspiring others to do the same, and
some who may even become priests!
On behalf of our Assumption Church and family, we congratulate Fr. Michael Manos, Presvytera Kyriake and their family on the occasion of
Fr. Michael’s ordination. You are “Axios!” “Worthy!” of this greatest of blessings bestowed on you. And to our Assumption parish, I also say
“Worthy!” We are blessed for raising a priest of God from within our Assumption Church family.

September Senior Citizens Luncheon and Meeting
Our senior citizens luncheon for September brought our friends together for a catch up of our summer activities.
We had a wonderful meal, as usual. Our meeting was opened with a prayer by Fr. Michael. Marian Vrahoritis our Vice President presided over the
meeting as our President Catherine Spadafore was not able to attend. She is at Shorepointe Rehab after a fall last month. Our thoughts and prayers
are with her. We wish her a speedy recovery.
The secretary’s report was read, followed by the treasurer’s report. Clara Baldwin won $32 in our raffle. It was also her birthday so her blessings
were doubled!
Until our October meeting, I hope everyone stays well. Hurry back Catherine!

ASSUMPTION BASKETBALL
The 2015-16 Assumption Basketball Program will be starting very soon! We’re looking forward to another good season and would like to encourage new players to join our Assumption teams. Practices will be starting later this month and into November, and games in the Orthodox
Youth Athletic Association (OYAA) basketballs season will start Dec. 6th (for Juniors, Girls, Intermediates and Seniors) and in early January
for Biddys. As a reminder, the teams are:
• Biddy C – boys and girls, ages 7-8
•
Biddy B – boys and girls, ages 9-10
•
Biddy A – boys and girls, ages 11-12 (cannot turn 13 before 3/20/16)
•
Girls – ages 13 & over
•
Junior Boys – boys, ages 13-15 (cannot turn 16 before 3/20/16)
•
Intermediate Boys – boys, ages 16-18 (cannot turn 19 before 3/20/16)
In order to get our team rosters together, we need families to go online to the OYAA website to register their children for the upcoming
season, which will be open by late October. Please go to www.detroit-oyaa.org to find the link which will take you to the registration system.
If you participated in the OYAA last year, you will need to sign into your account and register each of your children who will be playing onto
their respective teams (see above). Parents who are interested in coaching can also sign up using this system. Registration is free, but is
mandatory for all participants in the OYAA. We will have a separate registration form for our Pre-Biddy (age 4-6) program. Coaches will be

METROPOLIS SUMMER CAMP WRAP-UP
The Metropolis of Detroit Summer Camp (MDSC) had another very successful summer with almost 400 campers participating from
the Metropolis churches in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Our Assumption parish was well represented, with approximately 32 campers
attending and 11 staff working at MDSC. Based on the feedback, everyone had a very rewarding experience learning more about their
faith, participating in many fun activities and making/strengthening friendships with their fellow Assumption parishioners and with
other youth from throughout our Metropolis.
I continue to encourage more of our Assumption youth to attend the camp. Campers may attend if they are going into the 3rd – 11th
grades. In addition, young adults going into 12th grade and over can serve on the staff of the camp. Assumption certainly has well
more than 32 youth of camper age, or 11 young adults of staff age at our parish. I hope to see many more of our youth and young
adults attending MDSC next summer and beyond. You can find more information about MDSC, and view pictures from last summer,

Phase II Iconography to Begin in 2016
Our Phase II of Iconography was scheduled to begin this fall, however, we have asked our Iconographer, Vlasis Tsotsonis,
to postpone his trip until after the first of the year.
Why the delays? There are several reasons.
Firstly, the Iconography Committee of our parish conducted a thorough search prior to selecting Mr. Tsotsonis. Since he
has been contracted to do work in churches throughout Greece, Europe, the Holy Lands, and the United States, and the
fact that he does most of the detailed work himself, the Iconography Committee anticipated that there would be delays
over the course of completing our church. We have endeavored to accommodate him—and he us, as he seeks to complete
our project while working on others. What is costing us in time is more than made up for in the work he has done for us.
Secondly, delays have occurred that are completely out of our hands and of our iconographer’s. Each time he comes to
the United States, our church must coordinate with him to obtain the necessary visas and work permits for him and his
assistants, and these have to be renewed annually. We understand that while we’re waiting for the U.S. Government to issue
the visas, Mr. Tsotsonis is working on other churches’ works as well as our own.
Thirdly, there is a great deal of research and planning that goes into conducting an iconography project of our size.
Measurements, size, symmetry, and proportions must be precise. The Greek Orthodox Church’s sacred tradition gives us
a general liturgical template indicating what icons go where, but there is also latitude and choices that need to be made.
Empty spaces must be examined so as to determine if the icons’ measurements must change—which would affect the size
and proportion of other icons— if a decorative element should be employed, or simply left blank. In this capacity, I have
worked with Mr. Tsotsonis extensively while here and many times over the phone.
I hope that this information helps us understand some of the reasons for the delays up until now. We should recognize
that the delays up until now have also been to our advantage: they’ve allowed us the time to raise much-needed finances
towards Phase II, to better plan the schematic display of the icons in the dome, and to continue researching more affordable scaffolding options. Throughout this time, Mr. Tsotsonis continues work on our iconography in Greece. Thus the time
here will be less and all costs associated with scaffolding reduced. In other words, what we’ve paid in time has benefited us
financially, artistically, and logistically.
Though it is obvious, it should be said that our iconography project has been and is a herculean task. I can say without
hesitation that what we have accomplished thus far would not have been possible without the distinguished leadership of
Ms. Harriet Stoukas, chairperson of our Iconography Committee and her committee members, the late Lou Vlahantones,
John Sheoris, Ted Niforos and Joan De Ronne. Harriet has been and continues to be the point-person for the beautification
of our spiritual home. She is the Assumption Church’s liaison to the iconographer, the parish council, the parishioners, and
the donors. She is the first to hear the criticisms and one of the last to receive our expressions of appreciation for all the
sacrificial and hard work she continues to do on behalf of our parish and for all our sake.
In closing, please know this is a clarification on the progress and delays of our iconography work to date. Truly, it is a
sacred task, and it can only be accomplished with God’s grace upon those dedicated individuals who are praying, laboring,
and contributing toward its completion, and always to the glory of God!

Greek School News
Our students celebrate the Greek Flag Day and “OXI” Day in October. Our entire parish is invited. The students will color Greek flags with blue and
white colors and the cross of Christianity. We also learn about other historical days. October 26, the feast day of St. Demetrios and the liberation of
Thessaloniki during the Balkan wars in 1912. October 28 is a Greek National holiday. In 1940, during the WWII Greece refused to surrender to Italy
and started a heroic war. This day is known as “OXI” day.
Greek School students will also present a Christmas program for the parish followed by a spring program as well for March 25, Greek Independence
Day. All students use their skills in language, computers, music, art and dance for the performances.
Monthly student lesson plans are emailed to parents. You can practice reading and vocabulary review with your child. This is very helpful to the
student and for the parents as well!. If you need additional assistance, please let us know and our teaching staff will help you.
The Advanced II level will be completing the Greek School program and will graduate this year. We wish that all of our students will aspire to that
level and receive their diplomas. If there is a conflict with schedules throughout the year of the program, you may consider a flexible schedule.
The process of accreditation and certification continues locally and on a State level.
At that time, all students who have graduated will be called to take an exit test. We will offer a review prior to the test. The National Director for the
Department of Greek Education stated that only the Greek Schools organized and working under the Greek Orthodox Churches are recognized and
accepted. No other individual program will be accepted for students to receive the diploma needed for accreditation from school systems.
The entire parish is welcome to visit Open House. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to review our program for their children to attend
Assumption Greek School.

In Loving Memory
We offer this segment of our Epistle as a tribute to the memory of our parishioners; their contribution to church and
community and to our history and heritage.
Vasilios Thomopoulos
Vasilios Thomopoulos was born in Andritsaina,
Greece on January 12, 1927 and entered into rest
August 2, 2015 in Detroit at the age of 88.
He was the loving husband of Marie and beloved
father of Pete (Helen), Stella (Perry) Peruzzi and
John (Shelley). Vasilios was the dearest grandfather
of Marika, Artemis, Tessa, Melanie, Billy, Michael
and brother of Panagiota (Reverend John) Kotretsos.
Vasilios was very proud of his family, his heritage
and being a U.S. citizen.
Charles Constantine “Chuck” Milonas, D.D.S.
A dedicated dentist and long-serving member of
local School Boards. A serious student growing up,
Dr. Milonas had a life-long commitment to better
schools. In 1967, Dr. Milonas began serving on
the Clintondale School Board as the Treasurer and
Secretary. After 4 years, Dr. Milonas ran for a seat on
the Macomb Intermediate School Board where he
has served with distinction for over 40 years until his
retirement in 2012. Dr. Milonas was also an active
member of the Macomb School Boards Association,
the Michigan Association of School Boards, and the
National School Board Association. His leadership
and commitment made him a key player in the
education of area children.
When he was growing up, Chuck Milonas was a
serious student who always placed a high value
on education. After attending Northeastern High
School, he went on to receive his B.S. from Wayne
State University and his D.D.S. from Northwestern
University Dental School. He completed his postgraduate work at Walter Reed Army Medical School
and the University of Detroit.
The dedicated involvement in education by Dr.
Milonas, was motivated by his desire to inspire and
guide children. Dr. Milonas said, ‘’We all should
carry a magic light in our hearts to guide our
children through the adversities of life.’’
Dr. Milonas is the brother of the late Lambros
Milonas, and he is survived by his loving children,
daughter Maria McCarthy (Edward), son Louie,
grandsons Michael and Andrew McCarthy, nephew
Elias Milonas, and niece Stacy Milonas.
Petros Patsalis fell asleep in the Lord on April 24,
2015 at the age of 82.
Petro was born in Greece on November 21, 1932 to
Evangelos and Angeliki Patsalis. He was the dear
husband of Panorea for 48 years and beloved father
of Evangelos, Angela (Kosta) Karabetsos and Maria.
He was the very proud grandfather of Efstathia,
Alexios and Petros and the loving brother of
Panagiotis (Antigony) Patsalis, Nicholaos (Evangelia)
Patsalis, Zoe Nikea in Greece and Theodora Bageris.
He was also beloved by many loving nephews and
nieces. Petro was preceded in death by his sister
Vasiliki (Chris) Lazos and Maria (Sam) Hortareas.
Petro emigrated to the United States at the age of 17
after the end of WWII and became a citizen shortly
thereafter. He enlisted into the US Army in the
1950’s and proudly served his newly adopted country
in Germany and Texas. He owned the Athens bar in
Greektown with his cousin for 35 years.
A lifetime member of Assumption Church, Petro
most enjoyed spending time with and doting on his
grandchildren. He enjoyed a good meal, especially
his wife’s cooking! He will be dearly missed by all
who knew him.
Petros Patsalis

Steve Boukis
Steve Boukis passed away on April 15, 2015 at the
age of 92. Steve was born in Muskegon, Michigan
in 1923. He was the beloved husband of Rita.
Steve came to Detroit with his family in 1965 and
worked for the Chatham Supermarkets. He was the
dear father of Louis, Athens, and Eoanna (the late
Edmund) Ahee. Steve was the loving grandfather of
six children and great-grandfather of seven children.
All the generations of his family have served the
Assumption Church admirably.
Theodoros Garbes
Theodoros Garbes passed away peacefully in the
arms of his family on July 2, 2015 at St. John Hospital
in Detroit at the age of 85. He was born in Episkopi,
Ithaki, Greece on July 28, 2015; son of Vasilios and
Eleni (nee Bouleris) Garbes.
Ted immigrated to the United States in 1956. He
married his beloved Eleftheria Katsimberis in 1965.
They resided in Detroit until they moved to St. Clair
Shores in 1972. The family were members of the
Assumption Parish.
Theodoros was a true family man and a dear friend
that will be missed by everyone that knew him. He
adored his wife Eleftheria and was proud of his son
Bill and daughter Eleni. He adored his grandson
Nikolas.
Georgia Baltsas
Georgia Baltsas, 89, fell asleep in the Lord, July 18,
2015 was the beloved wife of the late Konstantine
Baltsas. She was the loving mother of Victoria Dallas
(Edward) and Tim Baltsas. Georgia was the dearest
grandmother of Maria and George Dallas, Timmy
and Evan Baltsas; great-grandmother of Alexander,
Sophia and Athena Baltsas.
Georgia was a dedicated steward of the Assumption
family and her smiling and warm presence will be
missed.
Eustace P. “Steve” Bitsicas
Eustace P. “Steve” Bitsicas passed away July 15, 2015 at the age of 90.
Steve was born in Spilia, Messenia, Greece in the Peloponnese.
In the late 40’s he traveled to America as a student. He met and
married Katherine and they were married for 63 years. He took up
the trade in butchering and worked for the Chatham Supermarkets as
their meat manager for over 30 years until the store closed. Steve had
a passion for growing tomato’s. Every year he would plant and harvest
over 50 tomato plants. Surviving are Steve’s beloved wife, Katherine
Bitsicas of Fair Haven, loving children; son’s Peter Bitsicas and George
Bitsicas (Jane), and daughter, Connie (Tom) Krzesak.
Steve had two adored grandchildren, Katina Bitsicas and Michael
Krzesak.

It’s been a ‘Doggone Good 50 Years’

Hot dog!
National Coney Island is 50 years old and to
celebrate today, customers can satisfy their
craving for a hot dog smothered with chili
and topped with onions and mustard for the
golden price of 50 cents.
The celebratory day will serve as the launch to
a series of special offers taking place through
December to show customer appreciation for
what has been a “Doggone Good 50 Years.”
“It feels fantastic on a number of fronts,”
said Tom Giftos, president of NCI. “I think
certainly just being a thriving part of the
tri-county community is a big deal. In today’s
day and age business longevity is not easily
achieved. So, it feels good to be able to have 50
years under our belt.”
Who would have imagined it?
Giftos’ father, James Giftos, traveled with his
mother from Kyparrissia, Greece to America
when he was 8 years old in order to join
his father, who worked in the coal mines of
Colorado before finding work with the Ford
Motor Company. Later as a Detroiter it’s only
natural he would become familiar with the
passion that Michiganders have for hot dogs
with chili on top.
Just as people are loyal to the hometown
baseball team, they are equally loyal to their
hometown hot dog.
In fact, according to the National Hot Dog and
Sausage Council, “Americans eat billions of
hot dogs each year. In restaurants and at street
carts, ballparks and backyard barbeques—hot
dogs are everywhere! But depending on where
you purchase your hot dog, your toppings may
differ radically.”
In Chicago hot dogs are layered with yellow
mustard, dark green relish, chopped raw
onion, a pickle spear, sport peppers, tomato
slices and topped with a dash of celery salt
and served in a poppy seed bun. In America’s
southwest region people crave the Sonoran
Dog featuring a grilled hot dog wrapped in
bacon and served on a sturdy bun covered
with pinto beans, grilled onions and green
peppers, chopped fresh tomatoes, relish,
tomatillo jalapeno salsa, mayonnaise, mustard
and shredded cheese. That’s a hot diggity dog!
In this part of the country, it is coneys people
crave.
“The coney phenomenon is
certainly native to Detroit,”
Giftos said .
There have been books,
documentaries and cocktail
conversations about it.
“You can probably trace it
back to Detroit’s heyday
when people were coming
here for work.” he said.
Knowing this and being a
stockbroker by trade, James
Giftos had a hunch people
would love the idea of a
Coney Island restaurant at
the new Macomb Mall. So,
he partnered with the National Chili Company
and opened the first NCI Restaurant on Gratiot
Avenue in Roseville.
People ate it up and the lines to get in snaked
out the door.
“I got the chance to learn the business from
my father and worked alongside people who
were legends in our company,” said Giftos.
One was his Uncle Nick Giftos, who believed
that a table for four was exactly that. If one
person was sitting alone when things got crazy
he would move them to the counter, even
Roseville’s Chief of Police. It is for him that
National Coney Island’s famous salad dressing
is named. Among the lessons Giftos learned
from his father—described as a very dynamic
man who had no qualms about chipping in
to help when one of his restaurants was in
need—was to never send everyone home
because of an unforeseen mishap. Giftos did
it once, after a power outage and 20 minutes
later the power was restored.
Over the years, NCI’s menu has grown from
limited menu handpainted on wooden menu
boards to include many favorite dishes
including the Hani sandwich. Still, more than
1 million coneys are sold each year, along with
coney kits that are shipped to fans from coast
to coast and Hawaii.
During the anniversary celebration customers, many who met at NCI and later got
married will also have the opportunity to
purchase limited edition drinking glasses
featuring a golden version of the company
mascot Mr. Pop, whose iconic mustache
distinguished him above others in 1970. A

portion of the proceeds from the sale of the
glasses will be donated to Wigs 4 Kids, which
supports services to children experiencing hair
loss as a result of illness and treatment.

Coney Island in 1965, I don’t think he imagined the brand identity that would be built
over the next 50 years. Our success is a true
testament to the support of the communities
in which we operate.”
National Coney Island currently owns and
operates 20 restaurants throughout the
Detroit area including one at Metro Airport,
provid ing work to more than 900 employees.

Institute in Boston, U of M Geriatrics Program, Barb Otul,
Assumption Kalosomatics Director, Dr. Wirth, Physiologist,
WSU and the Area Agency On Aging.
Each Tuesday and Thursday, Seniors of all ages take
part in a program designed for moderate exercise with
cardiovascular emphasis and strength building. Selected
as one of the Metro Detroit’s most safe and effective
exercise programs, the Assumption class is free to our
parishioners and includes a lunch following class for a
donation of $2. Share time with fellow class members.
