El quincuagésimo aniversario del
Concilio Va cano II
Page Two
Cristo.
Cardenal Francis George, O.M.I.
Dios no
astrólogos a empacar algunos regalos y emprender
Epiphany of the Lord
January 6, 2013

The Fi ieth Anniversary of the Second Va can Council
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This is the second of six short ar cles to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Va can
Council. The first ar cle explained Pope John XXIII’s pastoral purpose in calling the Council. He desired to
unite a world at war with itself by using the unity of the Church as a catalyst to bring all peoples together in
dialogue. This second ar cle takes up the first document approved by the Pope and Bishops in Council: the
Cons tu on on the Sacred Liturgy.
The central act of the Church’s worship, the celebra on of the Mass or the Eucharist, began on Calvary,
when Jesus, as priest, offered his very self as vic m for our sins on the altar of his cross. Christ’s historical self
-sacrifice is made sacramentally present each me the Mass is offered. We worship God by par cipa ng in
the offering of the Mass and joining our self-sacrifice to that of the Lord.
The Council wanted to foster greater participation, both interiorly in spirit and exteriorly in actions, in the
celebration of the Mass. The Council called for preserving the elements of the rite that come to us from apostolic
times but adapting them so that the language and the actions of the Mass would make it easier for all the baptized
to take part in them. The goal of liturgical reform was to have the Mass, in a sense, speak for itself.
The reform of the liturgical rites placed par cular emphasis on Scripture. It called for liturgical music in
vernacular languages, as appropriate. It mandated homile c preaching as integral to the rite itself. It made
clear the connec on between worship of God and ac on for jus ce and peace and charity in the world he
created and his Son died to save.
While the Eucharist is the summit of the Church’s worship of God, the Council encouraged popular
devo ons to the Blessed Virgin Mary, to the reserved Sacrament of the Altar, to the saints in the liturgical
calendar, and popular par cipa on in the celebra on of the Liturgy of the Hours.
The goal of deeper and more authen c par cipa on in the liturgy is to imbue all believers with a sense of
me centered on the mysteries of Christ’s life, death and resurrec on. Liturgical me keeps us living in the
Kingdom of God, even as we work out our salva on in this world’s temporal rhythms. The Mass bridges the
gap between earth and heaven; it is the biblical Banquet of the Lamb.
Some mes younger Catholics will ask what they get out of coming to a Mass they might not understand
well and are some mes not interested in. What do they (and everyone else) get? They get the eternal life
promised by the Lord to those who “eat his flesh and drink his blood,” taking into our s ll mortal bodies the
seeds of immortality in Christ’s risen body. That’s not something one “gets” anywhere else: eternal life.

Reflec ng on God’s Word
Ma hew’s tale is less a story of adventurous seekers than of a luring God, drawing others into the
mystery of divinity through the birth of Jesus. A star that guides and wise words that explain are what help
lead the magi to their des na on. Natural signs and words of revela on are what God works through in our
own day to bring us into the presence of Jesus, the Son of God.
The story of the wise men is a journey that surrounds the birth of Jesus. It speaks to all seeking God in
today’s world. God does not use force to a ract others. Angels speak a message of joy for all but give no
orders that insist that the shepherds journey through the dark of night to worship. A star appears in the sky
but no one forces these astrologers to pack up some gi s and make their way across foreign terrain to kneel
and prostrate themselves and do Jesus homage.
At the heart of this story is the message announced in the le er to the Ephesians: God’s plan was that
everyone be included in the mystery of salva on, that, along with the children of Abraham, “the Gen les are
coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 3:6). God
wants everyone to share in divine life—everyone! Give it your though ul considera on.
