Interfaith Shelter coming to FUMC.CV
The Interfaith Shelter Network is a collaborative effort by local congregations, human services agencies
and government entities to provide shelter, services, and resources to homeless San Diegans
throughout the region. FUMC.CV participates as a host church for the Rotational Shelter each winter/
spring. This year our two week rotation begins Feb. 15th. The shelter represents the work of more than
100 San Diego County congregations and 3,500+ volunteers who link to offer hands up to people
seeking an end to their homelessness. Our volunteers and congregations collectively have sheltered
more than 8,000 homeless people for more than 200,000 bed nights since 1986. More than half of our
shelter guests leave our shelters for more permanent housing because of the professional guidance they receive
from our case management agencies and the personal attention they receive from Network volunteers. There are
multiple opportunities for you to serve while the shelter is on our campus. You can prepare a dinner meal, spend one
night as an overnight host, donate food, donate other supplies, help set up/breakdown or give financially. If you are
interested in any of the options below please contact our coordinators.

Mexico Mission Trip Recap
For the third consecutive year over the MLK Jr. holiday weekend FUMC.CV sent a team of short term missionaries
south of the border to Ensenada, Mexico to be in ministry as an extension of who we are and what do as a
church. This year our team consisted of 46 men/women/
children. Together this group of people constructed two
homes and teamed with another UMC to run a children's
ministry. It was an amazing experience and one you will
hear about in worship and all forms of media we utilize
over the next few weeks. We are tremendously thankful for
the gifts totaling over $12,000 that were given by members
and friends of FUMC making this trip possible. Below is a
testimonial of the impact this mission trip has on those that
participate.
My family and I are so thankful for the opportunity to be a
part of the mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico. It is amazing
what can be done in 4 days, to our hearts, and in the
world. It is truly a soul-feeding experience to know that
you helped to make a family's life a little bit better
because you engaged and endured. People on both
sides of the border are energized with absolute certainty
of the love of Jesus Christ.

YOU-nique Gifts and Talents Sermon Series
We continue our Unique Gifts Sermon Series into the month
of February with the goal of everyone in our congregation
thinking about and beginning to utilize their spiritual gifts for
the ministries of the church and in the world. There are two
documents you will want to make sure you have
completed by the end of the month. The first is a spiritual
gifts assessment we handed out in worship Jan. 19 and 26
and the other is a Gifts and Talents Inventory we handed out Feb. 9 and 16. If you missed these documents you can
pick them up in the office or you can access them on the church web page. These are both tools to help you better
care for the stewardship of your presence in 2014.
At Your Service Day
February 8- Mark Your Calendars
Our next At Your Service Day will be held on Saturday February 8, 2014. Beginning
at 9:00 a.m. teams of volunteers will visit senior citizen church members and single
parents to help them with chores or projects of their choice in and around their
homes. We will be signing up volunteers and taking requests for help with projects
after church services for approximately three weeks prior to the actual date.
Suitable projects or chores might include shopping trips, minor home repairs, painting, rearranging furniture or yard
work. Projects should be ones that take no more than a few hours of a single day to complete. We hope to extend
the success of past At Your Service Days by doing even more to help our brothers and sisters in Christ.
The Walk to Emmaus is Coming
The Walk to Emmaus®
gets its name from the
story in Luke 24:13-35,
which provides the
central image for the
three-day experience
and follow-up. Luke tells
the story of that first Easter afternoon when the risen
Christ appeared to the two disciples who were
walking together along the road from Jerusalem to
Emmaus. Like Christians and churches who are
blinded by preoccupation with their own immediate
difficulties, these two disciples' sadness and
hopelessness seemed to prevent them from seeing
God's redemptive purpose in things that had
happened.
The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with a 72hour short course in Christianity, comprised of fifteen
talks by lay and clergy on the themes of God's
grace, disciplines of Christian discipleship, and what
it means to be the church. The course is wrapped in
prayer and meditation, special times of worship and
daily celebration of Holy Communion. The "Emmaus
community," made up of those who have attended
an Emmaus weekend, support the 72-hour
experience with a prayer vigil, by preparing and
serving meals, and other acts of love and self-giving.
The Emmaus Walk typically begins Thursday evening
and concludes Sunday evening. Men and women
attend separate weekends.
This year the San Diego area Walk to Emmaus
weekends will take place:
Men - March 27-30, 2014
Women - April 3-6, 2014

can call the church office to be connected with our
Emmaus Coordinators.

During the season of Lent (beginning with Ash Wednesday
March 5) we will be offering a church wide study and
sermon series focus that will put everyone on the same
page and in the same conversation. There are a number of
ways you can interact with the study- in worship each
Sunday during Lent, reading the book, Final Words from the
Cross by Adam Hamilton (can be purchased at any major
bookstore or online) or by joining one of the classes that will
be sharing in conversation and study throughout the season
of Lent.
Classes will be offered: Sunday morning at 9 am. and 11
am., Wednesday night at 6:30 pm. (Men, Women, Mixed)
and Thursday morning

for the classes through the month of February
Here is a little more info about the resource we will be using
for focusing our life together. Rev. Adam Hamilton, in this
resource, has devoted six chapters to an “in-depth
consideration of the six hours during which Jesus hung dying
on the cross and to what are traditionally called the ‘seven
last words’ of Jesus, but which are more accurately called
the seven last statements of Jesus.

These phrases will guide our preaching, worship, prayer and
study together during the Lenten Season as we move closer
to Easter and if you join us on this journey we are quite
confident you will end up closer to Christ come Easter.

While 2014 budget is essentially the same as 2013 actual,
to achieve that level took generous and sacrificial
increases in pledges from many people. The results of the 2014
stewardship campaign were 167 households pledged an overall
increase of $50,000 over their 2013 giving! That number is significant
because it replaces a $50,000 bequest received in 2013 that will not
be repeated in 2014.
Each of us can support the church budget by:
1. Praying daily for the missions and ministries of this church.
2. Staying current on your giving — giving consistently each month.
3. If you did not pledge for 2014, pray about how you might be able
to increase your giving — set a goal!
Heavenly Father, help us to clearly see your financial blessings in our life
and help us to generously and joyfully set aside 10% or more to give
back to your work. Amen
Café Con Amor
Spanish conference for couples on
February 13 at 7 pm costs $10
God is good! After many ups and downs in 2013,
extremely generous giving in December resulted in a
slight budget overage for 2013. Thank you to everyone
who supported the missions of the Church in all ways —
financially, prayerfully, and through service.
Christmas Family Service
Our Fellowship Hall was filled to the
brim with families that came to worship
at 4 p.m. Pastor Brian shared the story
of Christ's birth as re-enacted by our
children playing the parts of Shepherds,
Angels, Inn-Keepers, and Magi. We
closed our time together with glow-sticks and carols. It was an exciting way
to start out the night.

service in the
Sanctuary had
the addition this
year of our Holy
Family. Our
youth, acting as
the Holy Family, were a beautiful addition to
our worship together. We closed our time
together in Holy Communion on our Quad
and the singing of Silent Night.
Confirmation and Baptism Sunday
On January 12th, the congregation
welcomed eight new members through
Confirmation. Cameryn Lauren
Richardson, Ana De Almeida Amaral,
Katie Eileen Ann George, Marisa
Elizabeth Matias, Justin Daniel Castro,
Miguel Angel Garcia III, Demetris Lavier
Mixon, Jr., Marina Maikalani Batuyong Pangilinan. These students
met for 15 weeks, learning together, praying together, and growing
together. Confirmation is an important part of a student’s faith
journey. We are thankful for all of the support that has been
provided to these students and the wonderful example of Christian
community that the congregation has shown. We are excited that
these eight young people have chosen to continue deepening their
relationships with God and the church. In addition to confirmation
Ana Amaral, Miguel Garcia, Demetris Mixon Jr. Rocco & Tanya
Castaneda were baptized that day. We celebrate and welcome all
of these folks as they join the FUMC.CV church family.

Point Loma Singers and
Vocal Jazz Ensemble Concert
On Sunday afternoon, March 2nd at 4 p.m., two groups from
Point Loma Nazarene University, the Point Loma Singers and
the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, will perform as the next group in our
concert series. Coming off a recent tour to the British Isles, the
Point Loma Singers are a mixed chamber choir which sings sacred and secular music from
traditional to contemporary. They are well complemented by the authentic styling's of the
Vocal Jazz Ensemble, who sing both unaccompanied and with a rhythm section. Both
groups are under the direction of Dr. Keith Pedersen. This is a great concert for all ages! A
voluntary donation will be collected during the concert to benefit Point Loma Nazarene
University and the concert series. Child care will be available.
Youth Group Valentine’s Day Fundraiser
The Youth Group and Leaders are happy to provide childcare services so
you hardworking parents can have a romantic (or at least kid-free) date
night on Valentine’s Day. Drop off your child (ages 3-10) at the KidZone at
FUMC Chula Vista anytime between 6pm-10pm. A donation of $20/child is
