Hats off to unbridled fun in the sun
16 The Hua Hin Sun, Aug/Sept 2009 A Wise and Friendly Word Thailand is known as the ‘Land of Smiles’, and has rightfully gained a reputation as a safe, hassle-free place to visit. Hua Hin is, we believe, one of the nicest, friendliest and safest places to stay in Thailand and we hope the following tips will not only make your stay here more enjoyable, but also help to keep Hua Hin and Thailand one of the best places in the world to visit. Hotel & Environs The Beach The vendors and horse riding on the beach have no connection with the hotel. They are unhygienic, and you risk your health and safety by patronising them. Horse riding on the beach is of particular concern. We have had several guests hospitalised because of accidents whilst riding beach horses. The important point we wish to bring to your attention is that by patronising beach vendors you encourage them and increase their numbers. Non Residents In the interest of guest safety and privacy we do not allow unregistered guests to visit guest rooms or use our swimming pools. Tailors may leave goods for de- livery to your room with our reception, but under no circumstances are they allowed access to guestrooms or public areas. The Pools Please do not reserve the sundecks for an unreasonable length of time. We really don’t mind if you leave your belongings on a sundeck for an hour, but please note we enforce a fairly strict policy about sundecks being for guests, not for towels, and will remove belongings left for a long while. The vast majority of our guests are delighted about this, as the only reason that people feel that they have to reserve a sundeck is because everyone else does it! If nobody does it, then everyone is the winner. Wise around Town Streetwise - Friend or Foe? Please be wary with people in town who claim they work for the ‘Tourist Bureau’ or something similar, and ask for a few minutes of your time to complete a questionnaire. Strangers and racketeers are often selling time-share units or something akin, and if they manage to find out your name and where you are staying, persistent sales people will pester you for the rest of your stay. regulated fixed charges for their services and a greatly inflated fee may be demanded when you reach your destination. For your own safety, please do not travel between town and the hotel in a tuk tuk or trishaw. For Thai’s, this form of transport is only for very short distances around town, and although it may seem to be a fun way to return to the hotel in a tuk tuk or trishaw, they are really quite dangerous on the open highway. Dusit Thani Hua Hin Bi-Monthly News Health and Safetywise Avoid dehydration – it can affect you quicker and more severely than you realise. Be careful of sunburn – some common sense, particularly at the start of your holiday will help. Don’t hire or travel on motorcycles. Almost daily in this area someone dies while riding a motorcycle. If walking on the beach away from the hotel, we suggest not to carry or display valuables, wear revealing clothing or walk alone. Aug/Sept 2009 Thailand Hats off to unbridled fun in the sun You will probably be approached in town by children selling flowers. As appealing as the children look, by buying flowers from them or giving them money, you are actually making their situation worse, as you are encouraging this exploitation. The children do not benefit from the money. The hotel offers a safe, reliable and reasonably priced transport service to and from the town of Hua Hin, either by scheduled minibus shuttle, or private car. It is not possible for us to ‘ring for a taxi’, simply because no such service exists. Local taxis (usually converted pick-up trucks) are readily available in Hua Hin, and will bring you back to the hotel, but be sure to negotiate the fee before you set off as there are no meters or at The Polo Bar Nightly, 5-8 P.M. The landscape is a blend of steep limestone mountains as a backdrop to a wide expanse of coastal plains, coastal swamps and shallow sea. Just off the coast are limestone islands that serve as the home and natural habitat for countless varieties of birdlife. Decreed as Thailand’s 4th national park and Thailand’s first marine national park on 28th June, 1966, the park houses the following tourist sites: Khao Daeng, located near to the park’s headquarters and 157 metres above sea level, the peak can be comfortably reached on foot with a 30-minute climb. This is a perfect viewpoint for gazing out over the whole expanse of Sam Roi Yot National Park or for simply enjoying the magical sunrise or sunset. Khlong Khao Daeng, located about 1.5 kilometres from the park’s headquarters, the canal is ideal for boating and boats can be rented from the boatmen of Ban Khao Daeng village. Alternatively, hire a kayak from one of the operators in the neighbourhood. It will take you between 1 and 2 hours to travel along the 3 – 4 kilometre length of the canal. Along the way you will have wonderful views of the steep limestone hills and mangrove forests that flank the river. In the early morning and evening, a huge variety of birds throng the area, while the best time of the day to take out a boat and enjoy the natural surroundings is between 4.30 and 5.00P.M., just as the heat of the day and the sun start to subside. Hat Sam Phraya, located about 5 kilometres north of the park’s headquarters, is a beautiful 1-kilometre stretch of sandy beach, set amidst casuarinas, and offering a calm oasis of peace and quiet. Camping is permitted and there is also a restaurant offering visitors delicious fresh seafood. Hat Laem Sala, a calm casuarinalined beach, flanked and backed by the surrounding mountains which form the shape of the letter U, with the island of Ko Sat Kut serving as a wave and windbreak in front of the beach.Although situated near to the village of Ban Bang Pu, the beach is inaccessible by road. Therefore, to reach Hat Laem Sala beach one has to choose to rent a boat from Ban Bang Pu (in front of Wat Bang Pu temple) and round the promontory of Khao Thian or, alternatively, make the trek across the mountains on foot from behind Wat Bang Pu via a stepped footpath, a journey Racing into 2010 with the ride of your life! which takes around 30 minutes. Rooms and tents can be rented in the area of the beach. Tham Phraya Nakhon, a large three-chambered cave accessible from Hat Laem Sala. Two of the chambers have apertures in the roof allowing rays from the sun to shine through and illuminate the cave, promoting the growth of a scattering of trees. According to the annals of history, the cave was discovered by Phraya Nakhon, a former ruler of Nakhon Si Thammarat. During the reign of King Chulalongkorn, King Rama V, His Majesty visited the cave on June 20, 1890 and commanded a fourgabled roofed pavilion be constructed on the hillock in the middle of the cave. The pavilion was bestowed the name of Kuha Kareuhat. Inside the cave, visitors will also find the royal monograms of both King Rama V and King Rama VII. The present ruler, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Rama IX has also visited the cave twice. As a result, there is a sense of great pride and history associated with this tourist site and the pavilion, as well as being included as one of the Unseen Thailand destinations, has become the symbol of the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan, featuring on the provincial crest. Visitors can reach the cave via a steep 430-metre climb up a trail from Hat Laem Sala beach and should allow approximately three hours for the climb and exploration of the cave. Tham Kaew, a cave located about 16 kilometres from the park headquarters on the way to the village of Ban Bang Pu, near the valley of Hup Chan. The cave itself has beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, most of which are clear and translucent, giving the appearance of huge icicles. Exploring inside the cave is quite arduous due to the darkness and uneven surface dotted with large rocks and smaller stones. Visitors are strongly advised to take lanterns or torches with them and should ask for officers from Sam Roi Yot National Park to escort and guide them. Approximately two hours should be allowed for exploration inside the cave. Tham Sai, a cave located in the village of Ban Khung Tonot, 9 kilometres from Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. Visitors can park their vehicles in the foothills and make to 280-metre climb to the cave on foot in around about half an hour.Visitors should bring their own torches or lanterns, or else rent them in Ban Khung Tonot, as these will be necessary to help themselves find their way around the dark cave which takes about 1 hour to explore. Inside the cave, there are countless shimmering stalactites and stalagmites. All the glitz and glamour of Ladies Day at Ascot.
