Embracing the New ASEAN Summit at Dusit Thani, Hua Hin
16 The Hua Hin Sun, Apr/May 2009
A Wise and Friendly Word
Thailand is known as the ‘Land of Smiles’, and has rightfully gained a reputation as a safe, hassle-free place to visit. Hua Hin is, we believe, one of the nicest,
friendliest and safest places to stay in Thailand and we hope the following
tips will not only make your stay here more enjoyable, but also help to keep
Hua Hin and Thailand one of the best places in the world to visit.
Hotel & Environs
The Beach
The vendors and horse riding on
the beach have no connection
with the hotel.
They are unhygienic, and you risk
your health and safety by patronising them.
Horse riding on the beach is of
particular concern. We have had
several guests hospitalised because
of accidents whilst riding beach
horses. The important point we
wish to bring to your attention is
that by patronising beach vendors
you encourage them and increase
their numbers.
Non Residents
In the interest of guest safety and
privacy we do not allow unregistered guests to visit guest rooms
or use our swimming pools.
Tailors may leave goods for de-
livery to your room with our
reception, but under no circumstances are they allowed access
to guestrooms or public areas.
The Pools
Please do not reserve the sundecks for an unreasonable length
of time. We really don’t mind if
you leave your belongings on a
sundeck for an hour, but please
note we enforce a fairly strict
policy about sundecks being for
guests, not for towels, and will
remove belongings left for a
long while.
The vast majority of our guests
are delighted about this, as the
only reason that people feel that
they have to reserve a sundeck is
because everyone else does it! If
nobody does it, then everyone is
the winner.
Wise around Town
Streetwise - Friend or Foe?
Please be wary with people in
town who claim they work for
the ‘Tourist Bureau’ or something similar, and ask for a few
minutes of your time to complete a questionnaire.
Strangers and racketeers are often selling time-share units or
something akin, and if they manage to find out your name and
where you are staying, persistent
sales people will pester you for
the rest of your stay.
regulated fixed charges for their
services and a greatly inflated fee
may be demanded when you
reach your destination.
For your own safety, please do
not travel between town and the
hotel in a tuk tuk or trishaw.
For Thai’s, this form of transport
is only for very short distances
around town, and although it
may seem to be a fun way to
return to the hotel in a tuk tuk
or trishaw, they are really quite
dangerous on the open highway.
Dusit Thani Hua Hin Bi-Monthly News
The hotel offers a safe, reliable
and reasonably priced transport
service to and from the town of
Hua Hin, either by scheduled
minibus shuttle, or private car. It
is not possible for us to ‘ring for
a taxi’, simply because no such
service exists.
Local taxis (usually converted
pick-up trucks) are readily available in Hua Hin, and will bring
you back to the hotel, but be sure
to negotiate the fee before you
set off as there are no meters or
Avoid dehydration – it can affect
you quicker and more severely
than you realise.
Be careful of sunburn – some
common sense, particularly at the
start of your holiday will help.
Don’t hire or travel on motorcycles. Almost daily in this area
someone dies while riding a
motorcycle.
If walking on the beach away
from the hotel, we suggest not to
carry or display valuables, wear
revealing clothing or walk alone.

You will probably be approached
in town by children selling flowers. As appealing as the children
look, by buying flowers from
them or giving them money,
you are actually making their
situation worse, as you are encouraging this exploitation. The
children do not benefit from the
money.

Inside Information
Dear Guests,
Sawadee pee mai, (Happy Thai New
Year) and what a busy start to the year so
far. With the hotel hosting the Asian Summit closely followed with my annual trip
to ITB in Berlin, it is difficult to believe
that Songkran is again so soon upon us.
Songkran marks the beginning of the
sowing season, an optimistic time to look
ahead with new vigour and enthusiasm –
a much needed sentiment in these globally
reasserting and challenging times.
The Hua Hin Sun, Apr/May 2009
New Year Thai-style
Happy Songkran!
Songkran was formerly known as the Thai New Year, and
is celebrated at the height of the hot season in mid-April, as the
whole country suffers from the oppressive heat and waits for the
coming of the rain.
Although it is really a religious holiday, Thais like to enjoy this
three-day festival as much as possible. And processions and beauty
parades take place all over the country, with especially elaborate
festivities taking place in Chiang Mai.
Traditional Thais observe Songkran by thoroughly cleaning their
homes, bathing their Buddha images and statues, and participating in ‘Rot Num’ ceremonies at the temple, where people pay
respects to elders and departed ancestors by having blessed water
sprinkled over their hands. This symbolises freedom and religious
purification.
After the merit-making comes a more secular activity which still
involves water.Wherever you are in the country, it is almost impossible to avoid being soaked by water-either sprayed from a hose or
thrown from a bucket. Everybody, tourist or local, is expected to
join in the fun, and since April is the hottest month of the year, the
drenching can come as a welcome relief from the heat, though all
should be careful about damage to valuables such as watches and
cameras, which should be left at home if possible.

Lake View
Located 18 kilometres from the hotel,
this 36-hole, 440-acre championship golf
course enjoys a backdrop of rolling hills
and lakes and is widely acclaimed by top
golfers. Designed by Roger Packard, the
course was completed in January 1993
and has many interesting water features.
Palm Hills
Just 3 kilometres from the hotel, this Max
Wexler-designed course is one of the
most open and enjoyable courses in the
area, particularly for the high handicapper. With lovely rolling scenery and sea
views, it often has cooling sea breezes,
particularly in the afternoons.
Majestic Creek
Situated 30 kilometres southwest of the
hotel, Majestic Creek is a 27-hole championship golf course with unique Zoiza
grass carpet-like undulating fairways and
some lovely water holes. Highly recommended. Other golfing facilities include a
driving range and Pro shop.

In Thailand, kiteflying has been popular amongst both royalty and commoners since the Sukhothai and Krungsri

vicinity of the royal palace, and anybody
breaking the law was charged with lèsemajesté. The Krungsri Ayuthaya era also

New highs over royal plaza
With changes come new opportunities,
new aspirations and new experiences. I
sincerely hope that with each new day our
guests will wake to the many new delights
our wonderfully dedicated staff have in
store for them.
Over several centuries, kiteflying
has evolved into a popular pastime
around the word. During that time,
many modernising changes have taken
place, both in the design of the kites and
the material used to make them. Presently, the trend is towards bigger and more
beautiful kites. In turn, this has resulted
in many different shapes and styles of kite,
even extending to many different flying
techniques, thus making it an even more
spectacular sight for spectators.
It is believed that kiteflying began around
2,500 years ago, with the objective of
providing enjoyment and relaxation.
Records show that the original kite, or
“flying wooden bird” was assembled by a

younger brother, Phra Anucha. Western
observers dubbed the Chula kite to a
male and the Pakpao to a female, likening
them to the Thai society of that era when
men held sway, imposing great power and
superiority over the supposedly subservient women.
The popularity of kiteflying was at its
peak during the reign of King Mongkut,
Rama IV after, in 1906, he gave Royal
Assent for kiteflying and kitefighting to
become a public right at Sanam Luang,
the royal parade grounds, located within
the boundaries of Dusit Palace, presiding
over the opening and closing of many
events himself. Though its popularity
did dwindle for a while, the pastime and
contests were revived during the reign
of King Vajiravudh, Rama VI, from 1910
– 1925, who assigned Phraya Bhirom
Bhakdi to organize a kiteflying contest at
Sanam Luang.

New era begins
Coronation Day
This national holiday on 5th
May, 2009 marks the anniversary of the coronation of His
Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Inside the Royal Chapel
of the Grand Palace, high-ranking government officials gather
to pay their respects to the king.
When he was born in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, on 5th December,
1927, it seemed very unlikely
that Bhumibol Adulyadej would
ever become king. Between him
and the throne stood his own
father- a son of King Rama V
– who died in 1929, then there
was Bhumibol’s elder brother –
Prince Ananda – who did reign
as Rama VIII for a year, before
dying mysteriously in 1946. Also,
any children of King Rama VII –
who abdicated childless in 1935
– would have been crowned before the present monarch.
So, it was somewhat surprising
when on 5th May, 1946, Bhumibol Adulyadej became the
9th king of the Chakri Dynasty
– Rama IX. However, the new
king did not rule the country
immediately, instead appointing Prince Rangsit of Jainat as
Regent until his death in 1951,
while King Bhumibol completed his studies in Switzerland.
“We will reign with righteousness for the benefit and happiness of the Siamese people”,
pledged The King at his coronation. It was a promise he has
never failed. Throughout his
reign, he has traveled to every
part of the country, together
with his wife – Queen Sirikit.
He has worked to solve many
problems, improve the welfare
of the people, and provided the
stability and continuity needed
to overcome the unpredictability of Thai politics.
Thai kings are traditionally revered, but the present monarch
is also loved as a man, a fact that
makes the Thai monarchy stronger now than at anytime since
King Bhumibol’s grandfather,
Chulalongkorn.
nasuta who as president of the
Cricket Association of Thailand
in the mid 1990’s was looking
for a venue. He approached
the Dusit Thani Hua Hin and
the then Resident Manager,
John Gill, himself an Aussie and
cricket enthusiast, suggesting
that we turn the front lawn into
a cricket pitch – if only for one
week a year! The rest as they
say is history and guest professionals such as England internationals Mike Gatting and Alan
Lamb plus legendary South African batsman Barry Richards
and Australia’s colourful Colin
Miller have played side by side
with club cricketers, seasoned
amateurs and beginners with the
emphasis firmly fixed on fun.
For the uninitiated, Cricket Sixes is a very short version of the
sport played by teams of only
six players. Each team receives
one innings, with a maximum
of only five overs. Each player is
allowed to bowl a maximum of
one over and wides and no balls
score extra runs for the opposing team. A batsman who reaches 35 or more runs must retire.
Naturally with far fewer fielders,
runs are easier to score and sixes
matches are typically frenetic affairs. The original idea behind
the sixes form of the game was
to package it up into more ‘pal-
atable portions’ to appeal to the
Asian countries that had no history of playing cricket.
No matter if you are a regular
cricket watcher or someone
who is seeing the game for the
first time, if you’re staying at the
hotel between the 5th and 10th
April, you are most welcome
to amble over to the cricket
ground. Take a seat in the shade
of one of the marquees, sip on a
cold drink – available at special
prices during the tournament –
and enjoy the banter and action.
Admission is free and our front
office staff will be delighted to
tell you the hours of play each
day.
Cricket lovely cricket!
The sound of leather on willow might well be something
traditionally associated with
the village green in England
on a lovely summer’s day. However, for the past 14 years, that
same sound of leather on willow
and occasional shout of ‘howzat’ have resonated around what
is now known as our cricket
ground, , located behind The Pavilion at the front of Dusit Thani
Hua Hin.
At the height of the Thai Summer, in April each year, we are
the proud host of the Hua Hin
Cricket Sixes, which is this year
to be played out from 5th to
10th April, 2009. Now in its
14th year, 16 teams are expected
to descend on the Gulf of Siam
to contest the tournament. Players from as far a field as Australia,
South Africa, Hong Kong and
the UK will brave the hot season temperatures to play alongside guest professionals Aaron
O’Brien, Mick Lewis and David
Bandy, who have a wealth of experience from Australian Sheffield Shield and English County
Cricket, as well as international
test cricket.

Dusit Thani Hua Hin was honoured to proudly welcome the leaders of Asia
as reported courtesy of the Bangkok Post published on 28/02/2009
Leaders of 10 ASEAN countries attended the official opening of the
14th ASEAN summit on Saturday February 28th at the seaside resort of Chaam, Phetchaburi province.
The opening ceremony began at 2.30pm,
with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva,
as chairman of ASEAN, promising that
ASEAN is committed to building a regional environment of peace and prosperity, and to strengthening links with the
rest of the world. The people of ASEAN,
he said, would benefit the most from the
reinforcing of the ASEAN community.
“We are going to witness ASEAN moving towards our goal... It is not for the
rich and the powerful, but for the people
of our community. “I’m honoured to be
able to work with fellow ASEAN leaders to secure for our peoples and for fu-
ture generations the blessings of enduring
peace, stability and prosperity,’’ Mr. Abhisit
said in his speech.
The key feature of the ASEAN community
was the protection and promotion of human
rights and fundamental freedoms, he said.
Mr. Abhisit also addressed issues of economic development. “We need to accelerate the development of an attractive single
market and production base that will help
attract foreign trade and investment,” he
said.
The opening ceremony marked the
launch of the ASEAN anthem, entitled
the ASEAN Way.The song was composed
by Thai musicians.
ASEAN also launched its own cartoon
character, which is an alien named Blue
who has 10 friends – one from each
ASEAN country.

When the summer heat is
scorching hot in Thailand,
people look to a sumptuous
flower-scented rice dish
called Khao Chae to cool off.
Curiously, its origins are not
related to the heat, but rather
go back centuries to when
the Mon people occupied the
Central Plains. As part of their
celebrations to mark the first day
in their lunar calendar, the Mon
offered gifts of what they called
khao Songkran (Songkran rice) to
the female guardian spirit of the
New Year. The name was later
modified to Khao Chae because
a special variety of rice is soaked
(chae) in water. King RamaV, who
reigned from 1868-1910,was
extremely fond of Khao Chae,
maybe because he found this
refreshing rice dish a good way
to cool off. The popularity of
this elaborately prepared cuisine
continues to endure.
It is quite a dish to prepare. Ordinary jasmine rice is too soft so
the firmer khao taa haeng variety
is used. It is first cooked in the
normal way, then put in a colander and rinsed under running
water several times to remove the
excess starch. Then comes the
unique ingredient: flower-scented water. A large pot is half-filled
with water and a handful or two
of fresh jasmine blossoms added.
A small flower-scented candle is
floated on top of the water, lit,
and the pot covered loosely with
the lid for 15 minutes. More
