From the Pastor
I am sitting here a week, or so, before Thanksgiving
and I’m trying to write you this letter; which should have
a Christmas theme to it since it is for the December
newsletter. But it isn’t easy; we’re still in our
“Committed to Christ” series, (I just preached on giving.),
and my head and heart are still deeply into that. The one
thing that is helping is the weather; there’s a couple of
inches of snow on the ground and it is below freezing so
it feels like Christmas.
As I’ve been reflecting on writing this letter one
theme keeps going around in my head; the giving part.
As I noted above I just preached on “giving,” and we
recently sent out the commitment cards for
stewardship. And with Thanksgiving coming up next
week I can’t get the idea of “giving” out of my mind.
As we get closer and closer to Christmas the world
will try selling us on the idea that the best gift…; the
most important gift…; the most appreciated gift…; will
be purchased at their store.
But for followers of Jesus at Christmastime we
remember, and celebrate, the greatest, most wonderful
gift we have ever received; Jesus the Christ, God’s
eternal Son. And in him we find salvation…the healing

and wholeness our spirits long for. That belief in God’s
gift is the key theme of the gospel.

In John’s gospel we are told: “For God so loved the
world that he gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life.” (John 3:16).

In Paul’s letter to the Romans, he wrote: “He who
did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us
all…” (Romans 8:32)

In the letter to the Ephesians we read: “For it is by
grace you have been saved, through faith—and this
is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God…”
(Ephesians 2:8)
This Christmas my hope and prayer is that you will
rejoice in the most wonderful and amazing gift the world
has ever seen:
“For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given…
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
(Isaiah 9:6)

Lifting Up Our Brothers and
Sisters in Christ
Wrap-up
Our church has participated in Trick-or-Treat for
UNICEF for between 20-25 years now, and this year’s
donations came to a total of $300.00.
Always guided by Jim and Beth Feuerstein, this annual event has probably donated thousands of dollars
for this charity – in the neighborhood of $6,000.00 has
been the “guestimate!”
As a part of the door-to-door canvass, participating
Sunday School kids always enjoy a pizza supper together,
and then join in with the Halloween Party for all of the
kids in our church. This is planned, prepared, and guided
by the GUMY group. Plans are also made to have collection boxes available for members of the congregation to
make a contribution on the Sunday after Halloween.
Grateful appreciation is directed to the Feuerstein’s,
to those adults who have helped “behind the scenes,”
and for the donations given by our congregation members when approached.
Africa 360 Challenge
During the 2014 Upper New York
Annual Conference session, a farreaching campaign called "Africa
360" was initiated. It combines the
conference's on-going support of Africa University with a
campaign called Imagine No Malaria. The goal is for our
conference to raise a total of $2 million for "Africa 360,"
with $1 million going to support Africa University and $1
million being sent to the Imagine No Malaria project.
To date, approximately $300,000 has been raised of
the 2 million dollar total (this having been collected for
the Africa University Scholarship program). To help
procure the remaining funds, Bishop Webb has issued a
challenge to every congregation in Upper New York to
raise at least $1,000 between now and the 2015 annual
conference meeting in May, where it would be collected
and blessed. In issuing this challenge, Bishop Webb
stated, "United Methodists are people who not only
care, but back up their compassion with action, and
together we accomplish BIG things." May God guide us
as we do our best to meet Bishop Webb's "Africa 360"
challenge.
As a result of our very successful August 150 Family
Yard Sale, our Outreach and Missions Committee has
been able to donate $500.00 to each of the following
Rochester United Methodist churches: West Avenue
UMC, Emmanuel UMC, Wesley UMC, and Grace UMC.
The above-mentioned churches will apply these gifts
to their programs which are dedicated to their urban
ministry programs.
An additional $5,000.00 was earmarked for our
continuing Parish Outreach Center’s expenses for an
array of medical kinds of support.
The above gifts have all been made possible from
our Yard Sale efforts, of which, 10% of the profits are
deposited to our Benevolence (mission and outreach)
Fund.

New Donation Program! The General Council on
Finance and Administration of the United Methodist
Church is pleased to present UMCmarket, a
tremendously rewarding opportunity to earn money for
your church.
How it Works: Every store at UMCmarket is happy to
pay a percentage of the purchased amount as a
donation to your church. There is no additional cost or
charge for either the church or the shopper. The stores
send us their contributions within a variable time frame
of 30-90 days. Once your church reaches $100 in total
donations, a check will be mailed to your church.
Signing Up is Free! Most churches are already listed in
our system. You and your members can easily sign up
for free. When you go to UMCmarket, you will click on
the “Get Started” button. You will have the option to
sign up with your Facebook account or enter your email
and create a password. You will then be prompted to
download our Easy Give Button and find your church.

Fall Church Conference
A new format was used for our Fall Church Conference, led by our District Superintendent, the Rev. Ted
Anderson, this year.
Ten area United Methodist churches gathered at the
Livonia UMC for a joint worship service, which featured
some lovely, but pertinent, praise hymns, which were
accompanied on the guitar by our worship leader.
This was followed by individual church ‘break-out
sessions” for the purpose of approving our most recent
church conference meeting minutes (July 2014), and our
budget for 2015, including our pastors’ compensation
packages.
Geneseo’s gathering, which was the second largest
“contingent” in attendance, was facilitated by the Rev.
Cathy (Hall) Stengel, who was recently appointed as senior pastor at the Rush UMC, and “claims” OUR community of faith as having been the “birth place” of her decision to enter divinity school, following her matriculation
from SUNY Geneseo.
She led discussions centered around some salient
questions regarding our ministry here, how we might be
impacting those around us, how we are cultivating disciples, and how our church is connecting people to Jesus.
The general consensus of our participating leadership group was that this had been a very productive and
uplifting conference - and it was easy to see that this
kind of gathering was a unique and special way for our
District Superintendent to connect with several churches
in a single day.
Amongst the junk faxes that
we receive for trips to the
Caribbean or Cancun and
the advertisements for the
Yellow Pages, I recently
received one beginning
“Collection Agency Service. Our fees are 20% from
recovered amount, it includes attorney fees. Money
paid to you directly from the debtor…”
I realize that these companies spam whatever fax
numbers they can find, but I thought I should send an
email back to them letting them know that we, here at
Geneseo UMC, are in the habit of forgiving our debtors.
The United Methodist Women’s annual Holiday Bazaar has been planned for Saturday, December 6th, form
10:00 am – 2:00 pm, and held throughout the church.
Last minute helpers for all of our various venues are always appreciated, so give one of the following chairpersons a call offering your help:

greens arrangements for the Greens Room. Myrt Merritt
and her crew work from 9 – 3, throughout the week preceding the bazaar.
And, of course, the invitation is extended for everyone to come and browse, make your purchases, and enjoy a wonderful lunch at the Café! All of the profits from
this annual sale go towards the organization’s mission
and outreach, both locally and far away.

Stuff Needed: Small craft sticks, assorted buttons,
and a hot-glue gun (or fast-drying craft glue).
Movie!
Pot-Luck Dinner!
Do: Have family members each create a stick person
representing themselves using craft sticks and buttons.
Small families can create extra stick people to represent
extended family members such as grandparents, aunts,
or uncles. When everyone is finished decorating their
stick figure, glue the feet of the stick people together to
form a snowflake.
Ask: Is it really true that no two snowflakes are
alike?
Say: Scientists say the differences between snowflakes are limitless. Many snowflakes look alike-even
under the microscope-but at closer examination, they
differ. God created each person unique, which makes
every family in the world unique too. Because each person in our family is unique, our family is one-of-a-kind…
just like a snowflake.
Read: 1 Corinthians 12:4-6: “Now God gives us many
kinds of special abilities, but it is the same Holy Spirit
who is the source of them all. There are different kinds
of service to God, but it is the same Lord we are serving. There are many ways in which God works in our
lives, but it is the same God who does the work in and
through all of us who are his.” (Today’s Living Bible)

MINISTRIES CORNER
Pitching to the Baby Boomers… Again
In our innocent or not so innocent youth, we sat
transfixed in front of the TV on Saturday mornings,
lost in the adventures of the Lone Ranger, Sky King,
Fury, Lassie, Circus Boy, Rin Tin Tin and others. And
throughout each show, our impressionable young
minds were subjected to an array of commercials
touting the pleasures of every conceivable sugarysweet cereal… Fruit Loops, Cocoa Puffs, Cocoa
Krispies, Lucky Charms, Frosted Flakes, Trix, Sugar
Crisps..
We didn’t know the health risks; nor did our parents.
It was a simpler time, a care-free era where Genetically
Modified Organisms (GNOs) was unheard of, Bovine
Growth Hormones (BGH) had not yet been invented and
Country of Origin Labeling was a non-starter. We didn’t
know to be afraid of what we ate, we poured whole milk
on our cereal, and marveled as it turned into cocoa
before our eyes, or became tinted from the multicolored
marshmallows. And we repeated the jingles:
Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs! Silly Rabbit, Trix are for
Kids! They’re Magically Delicious! They’re G-R-E-A-T!
…unaware of how the cute cartoon elves and
animals were contrived to call us to action. As pawns in
the marketing game, we would harass our parents until
they purchased these cereals for us.
As Baby Boomers grew, we were inundated with
another theme… too much sugar was bad for you, eggs
were bad for you, red meats were bad for you, pork was
bad for you; the food pyramid needed to include a
balance of food types – proteins, meats, dairy,
carbohydrates, fats. A confusing array of contradictory
'expert' medical opinions assaulted us for years:
Butter is bad… no, margarine is bad… no, butter;
Eggs are the perfect food;
Nowadays, a strange phenomenon is occurring…
sugary cereals are again being marketed to us… the Baby
Boomers who were targeted before!
Current
commercials feature the Lucky Charms elf hovering over
a woman at the break room of her workplace where she
sneaks a spoonful of Lucky Charms from someone’s bowl
(yuk!) and says, “Oh, I forgot how good these tasted!”
and a couple who have put their kids to bed break out an
old Atari game – and Fruit Loops to snack on as they
play. The marketing gurus who bring us the ads were
obviously counting on triggering the good memories we
had as children. They’re betting that we, who would not
buy these sugary cereals for our kids, will buy them for
ourselves!

Flower Arrangements Help the POC
Brad Farthing, retired floral designer and a recent
new member here, created lovely Autumn floral
arrangements which he donated for the benefit of the
Geneseo Parish Outreach Center.
According to them, more than $100.00 was offered
by those who purchased these bouquets and table
decorations.
As he pledged when transferring his church
membership to GUMC, he has already started giving of
his “time, talent, and gifts” – and, furthermore, he’s
begun creating holiday arrangements which will be
offered at our December 6th

no, egg yolks are bad… no, egg whites are bad’
White bread is bad for you… no, wheat bread is
bad… no, no, and no.
We grew up with a cacophony of warnings
screaming in our ears, until we were convinced that
food, in general, was just not fit to eat. Our kids paid the
prices, with sugared cereals being banned from the
breakfast table. (Now, Uncle Sam wants us to try
flaxseed cereal. Is anyone willing to give it at try?)

Today’s Devotion: Jesus’ prayer,…“The goal is for all
of them [Believers] to become one heart and mind ~ just
as you, Father, are in me and I in you, so they might be
one heart and mind with us. Then the world might
believe that you, in fact, sent me. (John 17:23 The
Message)”
A Conversation: A collegiate1 medical study that
concluded, in brief, that when people sing together their
hearts start beating together.
Goal: Find a favorite song of Christmas “that our
hearts might beat as one.”
Personal interview survey question: “I’m doing a
survey of favorite Christmas songs among those in their
twenties. Will you share what is your favorite Christmas
song?”
Expectation: To be ignored.
Results: I was unexpectedly surprised and amazed
at the willingness to share in conversation not only
about favorite Christmas songs, but why it was their
favorite.
Some examples include: learners of
management starting singing, “chestnuts roasting by an
open fire…”; financial field learners, “Little Drummer
Boy”, “Jingle Bell Rock”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas”;
Psychology learners all responded,
“hmmm”, followed by three favorites all including
“Silent Night”, one couldn’t remember the name but
played it on the flute with her mother’s guitar
accompaniment, and another “O Come, O Come
Emmanuel”; an environmental studies student started
singing, “….dashing through the snow…”, continuing his
way singing “Jingle bells, jingle bells….”; auto and diesel
mechanics students chose “Silent Night” and “Oh, Holy
Night”; a student of renewable energy shouted, “the
California Raisins singing ‘Joy to the World’!”; teaching
students selected “The Cherry Tree Carol”, and “Do You
Hear What I Hear”; and there was one that didn’t say
the area of study, instead thinking out loud, “When we
went to St. Agnes we always started the day by singing a
song together. My favorite? Probably “What Child Is
This”.
Comparison: Survey with “church folk” of every
age, showed that the results and reasoning behind the
answers were strikingly similar. (Even at least one from
Page 7
each group citing, with a sly grin, the long-time radiobanned, “Grandma Got Run-over By a Reindeer”).
Conclusion:
1. Knowledge of Christmas songs bridge gender,
ethnicity, age, interests, economics, status, politics,
membership, spirituality, nationality. Christmas is
universal.
2. In a hurried, harried culture, people willingly stop to
consider a question about Christmas. Christmas is
important, at least enough to consider its
importance.
3. While Christians have not reached the goal Jesus
prayed for in the devotion, by God’s grace we still
get the privilege to open doors.
4. Asking this simple question enabled conversations I
thought were closed, corrected other assumptions,
and overall enabled a greater understanding of this
wonderful season with deepened gratitude and
appreciation.
Final Thought: May Christmas harmonies blend
with Christ’s gift of peace to you and our world
throughout the coming year.

Stained Glass Window
Update
Our stained glass window pledge campaign totals
are as follows: pledges-to-date amount to $39,035.00;
$19,784.00 of that amount has already been paid; and
$19,250.00 is yet to be paid.
Our engineering design work is being handled by Tim
Brinduse, of TAB Architects, Geneseo, who is planning to
begin his work on our project in the next two weeks,
weather permitting. An professional drawing is one of
the requirements of the Geneseo Town code
enforcement officer.
Valerie O’Hare, of the Pike Stained Glass Studio,
Rochester, has received input from the Board of
Trustees, and will begin sketching out her concept for
our window design sometime after Thanksgiving, which
will allow our reconstruction project to begin next
Spring.

November 16th, during the 10:30 am worship service.
Married to Mark, and the mother of two adopted
children, Kendall and Brendyn, who was baptized during
that service, Julie is happily ensconced in her Family Day
Care business.
We extend a warm welcome to Brendyn Mark Jace
Bennett, who was baptized into our Christian family at
the late service on November 16, 2014. Brendyn was
joined at the altar by his parents, Mark and Julie, and big
sister, Kendall.
Always having thought of adopting some day, since
she is also an adopted daughter, Julie’s two-year child
care business is “right up her alley!” She feels that her
entry into this business is really a blessing and hopes to
be a positive influence in the lives of those children she’s
caring for.
May we remember to keep Brendyn, and all children
of this church, in our prayers, and to keep our covenant
to surround them with a community of love and
forgiveness, so that they may grow in their service to
others, and become true disciples, walking in the way
that leads to life.
In her spare time, Julie loves being a party planner
(their son’s baptism reception is a prime example of
that!), she loves to cook, and when she can find some
relaxing time, reading is what interests her most!

Linda Weaver, the Executive Director of our Parish
Outreach Center, is our professional volunteer-of-themonth whose biographical sketch is outlined in this
article.
Our nominee is the wife of Gerry Weaver and is the
mother of Laura (McMindes) Page, Michael McMindes,
and three step children; has 16 grandchildren and one
great granddaughter. Her older son, Larry McMindes,
passed away from a brain tumor a number of years ago.
Linda started working at the Craig Developmental
Center in Sonyea in 1979. She earned her Associates
degree in Nursing from Genesee Community College in
1982 and was awarded her Bachelor of Science degree in
Nursing from Alfred University in 1988. She worked at
Rochester Psychiatric Center as a Nurse Administrator
and retired in 2003. Linda also served in the United
States Army Reserves from 1979 – 2006, and retired a
Lieutenant Colonel.
Linda estimates that she is involved with her Parish
Outreach Center duties 1,500 hours annually, but does
try to take walks in Letchworth State Park three times
weekly. She also enjoys crocheting and taking trips
traveling with her grandchildren, and enjoying her
vacations with Gerry.
Our church’s program to help the uninsured and
underinsured was started in September 2004, when
Pastor Nadine Graham was our church leader. since
then, a total of 1,258 clients have been served by our allvolunteer staff, with patients coming from eleven nearby
counties.
Our professional volunteer help over these past ten
years has included 8 doctors, 3 nurse practitioners and
physician’s assistants, 14 nurses, and more than 50
paraprofessional volunteers who have all helped keep
our program growing each year.
Linda reports that mental health, diabetes, and
dental issues are the three largest numbers of client’s
diagnosis outcomes, but health issues run the gamut
from vision, hypertension and hearing problems, as well
as other medical issues.
All age groups are represented in the patient
records, with our medical team always trying to practice
preventive medicine whenever possible. This allows
small health issues to be monitored early and before
larger and more costly problems develop.
When asked what she is most proud of, Linda’s quick
response was to “give all glory to God, for he has
provided whatever has been needed, and those needs
have always been met when they present themselves."
Ecumenical Book Review
Thursday, December 6th will see the last Ecumenical
Book Review in 2014. Dr. William Cook will review
“Deep River,” by Shusaku Endo.
“A trip to India becomes a journey of discovery for a
group of Japanese tourists playing out their ‘individual
dramas of the soul.’ Looking for absolutes, each
character confronts the moral ambiguity of India's
complex culture, in which good and evil are seen as a
whole as indifferent to distinction as the Ganges River,
which washes the living and transports the dead. This
novel is a fascinating study of cultural truths revealed
through a rich and varied cast.”
The first review of 2015, on Tuesday, January 8th,
will find James Willey reviewing “Who Killed Classical
Music?: Maestros, Managers, and Corporate Politics,” by
Norman Lebrecht
The book “offers a start-to-finish history of classical
music, explaining how the twentieth century has
reached a radical transformation period in which
orchestras have become out of reach to most people,
left only to the elite who can afford their exorbitant
ticket prices."
A music writer for the Sunday Times and other
publications, Lebrecht believes that the less-than-artistic
motives and dealings of present-day star performers,
managers, and corporate owners are ruining the art. He
presents hard evidence of massive corruption and
artistic sell-out in all facets of the field and charts the
resultant decline in audience interest.
Reviews take place at noon at the Wadsworth
Library on Center Street, Geneseo. You are
also invited to come early and bring a
brown bag lunch at 11:30 am.

One Bite at a Time
Northwest Neighborhood
Outreach Center in Rochester
Jerry Weaver, Bill Lewis, Peggy Linton and Lucille
Kane took a ham and scalloped potato dinner to 45 folks
at the NNOC on November 11, 2014. Peggy Linton and
Carol Becker made cookies for the dessert. If you go with
us you are allowed one cookie as your pay. One client
said "my mother used to make cookies." Continue to
pray for the NNOC and the folks they serve.
Jerry Weaver presented Diane Argauer, director of
NNOC , with a check for $500 from the GUMC Mission
and Outreach committee. She was overwhelmed and
told us that it was the balance they needed for the
outdoor sign at their Educational Center on Dewey Ave.
God is good all the time.
SUNY Geneseo Care Packages: We’re putting
together “Finals” (mid December) care packages for
SUNY Geneseo students. You can help by contributing
any of the following: candy canes, packages of hot
chocolate, popcorn, post-its, pens, and snacks. Gifts of
money to purchase “odds and ends” will also be
gratefully accepted. Please sign the list, found outside
the sanctuary, indicating what you will donate so we
don’t end up with too much of one thing, and not
enough of another. There will be a collection basket in
the hall outside the sanctuary.
Packages will be assembled on December 9 at 9:30
am, to be delivered later that day. Volunteers are
welcome! Please see Bonnie Kreutter for details.
Forty-nine shoeboxes were donated to Samaritan’s
Purse Operation Christmas Child this year. (It was easy
to lose count with so many!)
"A small shoebox can teach a child about the love of
God, lead him or her to faith in Christ, inspire pastors,
and plant new churches. What goes into the box is fun,
but what comes out is eternal." Thank you for your

The Cross in the Manger
If there is no cross in the manger,
there is no Christmas.
If the Babe doesn’t become the Adult,
there is no Bethlehem star.
If there is no commitment in us,
there are no wise men searching.
If we offer no cup of cold water,
there is no gold, no frankincense, no myrrh.
If there is no praising God’s name,
there are no angels singing.
If there is no spirit of alleluia,
there are no shepherds watching.
If there is no standing up, no speaking out, no risk,
there is no Herod, no flight into Egypt.
If there is no room in our inn,
then “Merry Christmas” mocks the Christ Child,
and the Holy Family is just a holiday card,
and God will loathe our feasts and festivals.
The Power to Carry On
Sometimes the power of prayer is the power to
carry on. It doesn’t always change your circumstances,
but it gives you the strength to walk through them.
When you pray through, the burden is taken off of
your shoulders and put on the shoulders of Him who
carried the cross to Calvary.

The Gift of Grace
At Calvary a man was dying who deserved hell. He
was a thief. He was a murderer. Yet in the last
moment he turned to Christ and said "Lord, remember
me when You come into Your Kingdom" (Luke 23:42).
In that moment Jesus turned to him and said, "Today
you will be with Me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43).
I expect to see that man in Paradise. That man is in
heaven today. Not because he could come down from
the cross and be baptized. Not because he could come
down from the cross and take communion. Not
because he could come down from the cross and give
money to charitable work. Not because he could come
down from the cross and live a good life. He had been
a wicked, godless man, but he was saved by the tender
mercy and grace of God.

And that is what brings us to the cross. You will
never understand what the cross means until you
understand in your own life the assurance that God
gives in His Word: "By grace you have been saved
through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the
gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8).
