What a blessing for us that Pope Francis is in our country this week!
"...if somehow by his own vivid example Francis could bring the
church into a new relationship with its critics and dissidents—
agreeing to disagree about issues that divide them while cooperating
in the urgent mission of spreading mercy—he might unleash untold
good. 'Argue less, accomplish more' could be a healing motto for our
times. We have a glut of problems to tackle. Francis says by
example, Stop bickering and roll up your sleeves. Don’t let the
perfect be the enemy of the good—an important thing for the world to
hear, especially from a man who holds an office deemed
infallible." Pope Francis, the People's Pope, TIME Magazine
Thank you to so many in our school community who do just 'roll up
their sleeves'. I'm particularly grateful to our PTSG leadership for all
the work that has gone into our family fun night! Hats off also to our
Room Parents for all they will be doing for our children this year!
How could we here at OLG be part of Pope Francis' call to spread
mercy? At the reception following Ms. Harmuth's Father's Mass of
Resurrection, a number of our parents shared with me that they were
so impressed with what an incredible person Michael Harmuth
was. The stories of all the good he did in reaching out to others
caused many to ask: "How will I be remembered?" The conversation
led us to consider ways we could reach out as a school
community. Our students are very involved with various outreach
opportunities, but this new focus will offer a chance for the whole
family to 'spread mercy'. On Sunday, October 25, there will be a
Family Mass at 10:30. Following the mass, we'll offer an opportunity
for a family outreach project. Mark your calendars now for 10/25.

PHOTO RETAKES
Photo retake day is Monday, October 5. Retake day is for students who:
• were absent on the original picture day, or
• did not purchase a package on original picture day and would like to buy a
package now, or
• purchased a package on original picture day but would like to retake the picture
(these students MUST bring the complete photo package back to school on
October 5)
Remember that students are to wear their FULL uniform for the photos!
4 SERVICE HOUR REMINDERS
You may report service hours as often as you volunteer, however please try to do so at
least once a month.
The easiest way to report hours is by sending an email to the service hour
coordinator once a month to olog_servicehours@yahoo.com. Please list the date,
the service provided and the number of hours for each time you volunteer.
Include the full name and grade of your oldest child at the school when reporting
hours as this is how the hours are tracked.
Service Hours from the Harvest Festival & Crab Feed will be reported by the Committee
Chairpersons, but feel free to check that your hours were submitted. This is especially
important if you worked a double shift or more than one family member volunteered.
Report Service Hours when volunteering in the classroom, the library, the office, or on
field-trips directly to the Service Hour Coordinator. Please note that when you sign the
visitor’s log in to the office you are NOT signing in for Service Hours, but merely indicating
that you are on campus. Likewise, teachers and staff members will not report Service
Hours for this volunteering.
Families can claim 1 Service Hour for each $10 spent on donations (up to 11 hours for a
2-parent family and up to 10 hours or a 1-parent family). Attach a receipt to the Service
Hour reporting form, which can be found in the main office.
Hours spent volunteering with CYO count towards total service hours for a family and up
to 20 of those hours can count towards the minimum required service hours for the school.
This is because CYO is a parish-based organization.
A couple times during the school year you will receive a letter indicating how many service
hours your family has reported. Please take a few minutes to match this against your
volunteer records. If there is a difference, please contact the Service Hour Coordinator to
find out what has been reported and to have the additional hours added.
If you complete your minimum number of hours and you continue to volunteer,
please also submit those hours. The school keeps track of how many hours our
families volunteer. This helps the school receive financial grants because it shows
that our families not only provide financial support to the school but also their time

FUNDRAISER NOTES

to our Cookie Dough fundraiser!!
Delivery of the fundraiser items will be
on Tuesday, September 29. Please plan
to pick up the items ordered that day (after
2:00pm). Unfortunately, we don’t have
space to store orders overnight. Items can
be re-frozen and kept for up to 1 year or
they will also keep in the refrigerator for 3
days.
The school secretary will be responsible
for reporting any service hours families
have earned as a result of the sales. As a
reminder, your family will receive 1 service
hour for every 5 items sold.
BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
In honor of the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, Blessing of the Animals will take place on Friday, October 2 at 2:30pm. Children may check with their teacher about bringing small caged animals to class with them. Larger animals may come at 2:30pm with their adult – cats in carriers and dogs on leashes, for example. If the actual animal cannot be present, children may bring a photo of their pet or a favorite plush animal. Also, on September 29, when our
fundraiser representative is at the school,
students will be able to spin the money
wheel one time for every 10 items sold.
They have a chance to win up to $50 in
cash!!

6 Harvest Festival Volunteer Assignments
Sign-­‐ups for working the Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 31st were taken at the General Parent Meeting on September 10. IF YOU WERE NOT ABLE TO SIGN UP FOR A COMMITTEE, PLEASE CONTACT CYNTHIA OLAVARRIA AT cynthia.olavarria@sbcglobal.net BY TUESDAY, 9/22 FOR OPEN COMMITTEES AND TIME SLOTS. Hard-­‐Copy confirmations of assignments will be sent home with Oldest/Only child on Wednesday, 10/7. If you do not receive this confirmation on October 7th, please notify Cynthia Olavarria at the above email address. Does Your Child Need Medication at School?
If your child has a medical condition that may require him/her on occasion to take
medication at school, please contact the school office for a medication form. This
form, signed by a physician, must be with any prescribed medications, such as
inhalers or EPI pens. Please inquire at the office for a form.
Even if your child only needs to have an over-the-counter medication on hand in
the school office, the school needs a medication form signed by a parent.
