LEXIKON DER ÄGYPTISCHEN GÖTTER UND GÖTTERBEZEICHNUNGEN
Bearbeitet von Dagmar Budde, Peter Dils, Lothar Goldbrunner, Christian Leitz und
Daniela Mendel unter Mitarbeit von Frank Förster, Daniel von Recklinghausen und
Bettina Ventker
LEITZ C. (ed.)
The Dictionary of Egyptian Deities and Divine Designations (Lexikon der ägyptischen Götter und
Götterbezeichnungen: LGG) comprises more than 5.500 pages or 16.500 columns, about 56.500
entries, almost 100.000 cross-references and approximately 200.000 citations. That makes it the largest reference-work of its kind in Egyptology. It includes all expressions which can in one way or
another designate deities. For the first time it is possible to view at once the entire material for any
particular epithet – no matter whether the texts are from the Old Kingdom or from the GraecoRoman Period (including demotic texts).

The 12th International Conference for Nubian Studies was held at the British Museum, London,
from 1st-6th August 2010. The main sessions, and main papers published herein, were devoted to a
consideration of the Merowe Dam Archaeological Salvage Project, its aftermath and impact. Over de
previous decade this has been the major focus of archaeological activity on the Middle Nile. The dam
is now complete and the reservoir is full drawing a line under the fieldwork component of the project.
It was felt timely, therefore, in the interim to obtain an overview of what was found during the many
years of intensive work and the first main paper speaker in each session sought to do just that. They
were followed by reports on sites, categories of objects and more thematic papers arranged broadly by
period. These highlight that, while the focus of archaeological activity still remains in the Nile Valley
where there is the densest concentration of sites and also where there remains the most concentrated
threat to their survival, much work is being undertaken away from the river and in some cases outside
its catchment area. The role of the deserts is increasingly being appreciated while the role of the savannah and areas even further south has yet to be given the prominence that it probably deserves.
EGYPT IN THE FIRST MILLENNIUM AD
Perspectives from New Fieldwork

• 2014 – British Museum Publications

This volume contains the proceedings of the twenty-first annual British Museum International Egyptology
Colloquium, which was the first in the series dedicated to post-pharaonic Egypt. The volume investigates
continuity and change in the archaeological record in the First Millennium AD, focusing on the transitions to and from Late Antiquity (AD 250–800), when Egypt’s population became Christian and, later,
Islam was introduced. The fourteen contributors, representing the overlapping disciplines of Egyptology,
Archaeology and Art History with specialisations in the pharaonic, Roman and Late Antique periods,
present the results of new archaeological research at a range of sites currently under investigation. Seeking
to identify trends and compare results, the volume is organised according to four major themes: 1) settlements, 2) cemeteries, 3) settling rock-cut tombs and quarries and 4) temple–church–mosque. Many
of the contributions address adaptive reuse of earlier architecture, the recycling of earlier monuments as
building material (i.e., spolia), or both. Traditionally neglected by modern scholars in favour of other
periods in Egypt’s long history, the study of First Millennium AD archaeology offers increasingly better
opportunities to evaluate both Egypt’s distinctiveness and its role within the wider Mediterranean region.

This present volume is dedicated to Gawdat Gabra, the former director of the Coptic Museum in
Cairo and now Professor of Coptology at the University of Claremont in the USA. Dr Gabra is one
of the pioneers of Coptic studies in modern times and the author and editor of many valuable and
highly regarded monographs, series and articles. Although the papers in this volume do not have a
single theme, all of them share an interest and focus on one topic: Egypt. They cover many fields in
Coptology and Egyptology, such as art, Biblical studies, liturgy, Copto-Arabic studies and archaeology. They present the results of recent academic research and archaeological excavations. The seventeen contributors to this volume belong to three continents and work in seven countries all over the
world, but all of them appreciate the long-time efforts of Gawdat Gabra for Coptic studies on an
academic level as well as his indefatigable labour to make laymen aware of Coptic Egypt.

This PhD thesis from FU Berlin (in German; with a preface by Jan Assmann and an English summary) provides the first complete edition of “The Offering Ritual of the Egyptian New Kingdom”,
formerly known as “Ritual for Amenhotep I”. The ritual’s liturgy covers the daily offering of food to
Amun-Re in Karnak and comprises 51 spells for the daily cult and 17 additional spells for certain
religious festivals. Part I contains a full synopsis of the liturgical texts in hieroglyphic transcription,
based on a new reconstruction of the two separate Papyri Cairo CGC 58030 and Turin CGT 54041,
Papyrus Chester Beatty IX, the texts of respective scene sequences in the temples of Karnak, Abydos
and Medinet Habu, as well as ca 400 other textual sources from all periods of Egypt’s religious history.
Part II consists of a full translation, commentary and critical apparatus of the Egyptian texts, together
with an in-depth analysis of the ritual, covering its theological, historical and practical aspects, and
placing it into the context of other rituals and religious structures of Ancient Egyptian religion. In
that sense, the book does not only fill a long-due desideratum in Egyptology but also provides new
insights relevant for audiences in the fields of theology and history of religions.
THE WORKMAN’S PROGRESS
Studies in the Village of Deir el-Medina and Other Documents from Western Thebes in
Honour of Rob Demarée

This book contains twenty-two papers collected in honour of Robert J. Demarée by his friends and
colleagues. Because of his expertise in the area of Western Thebes and ostraca of the village of Deir
el-Medina in particular, the contributors have sought to address these topics in particular. Central
theme of the Festschrift is the community of workmen of Deir el-Medina, which is investigated from
many different angles. The papers discuss the documentary texts from the village, either written in
graffiti, on papyri or on ostraca, but also aspects of the work in the Valley of the Kings, the workmen’s
use of oil, birthing beds, coffins, stelae as well as their religious beliefs and behaviour. The volume
thus sheds new light on the workmen’s community, as well as on the area of Western Thebes in more
general terms. This volume is a token of gratitude from the Leiden University department of
Egyptology for Rob’s much appreciated contribution to its teaching programme, as well as a tribute
by colleagues worldwide who have worked with him, also in fieldwork projects in Egypt.

The Tale of Sinuhe is the best-known text from ancient Egypt, and equally the one about which the
most has been written. And yet its depths have not been fully fathomed, in respect neither to its
cultural and literary value, nor to its grammar and lexicon. The present volume originates in a conference held at Leiden University which took as its starting point two passages from the famous story:
one from the beginning of the Tale, and one from the end. The idea was that the text could be opened
up through them, from the inside out. The ten essays of this volume discuss the Tale from many
different viewpoints, bringing new insights to its grammar, its literary ambition, and its cultural
setting.

The goddess Mut, consort of Amun-Re at Thebes, is one of the goddesses known as the “Eye of Re”
that include Isis, Hathor and Bastet among others. Her temple precinct in South Karnak was a major
religious site from at least the early New Kingdom through the early Roman Period, yet Mut remains
relatively unknown. While badly damaged, the gate in the Mut Temple’s First Pylon bears important
religious texts relating to the goddess and her cult as well as remains of Ramesside scenes recarved in
the Ptolemaic Period. This study of the gateway and its texts, edited by R.A. Fazzini and J. van Dijk,
includes a description of the gateway’s architecture (W.H. Peck), a detailed study of the figural
decoration (R.A. Fazzini) and transcriptions, translations and analyses of the inscriptions (J.-C.
Goyon, J. van Dijk, H. te Velde). Two appendices deal with the recarved Ramesside texts (J. van
Dijk) and aspects of the goddess (J.-C. Goyon).

This is a data-oriented grammatical description of Middle Egyptian, a now extinct Pharaonic language, spoken and written in the hieroglyphic and hieratic scripts, between 2100 and 1700 before our
era, the period of the Middle Kingdom. Middle Egyptian was regarded by the Egyptians as a classical
stage of their language and it remained in use for a long time after that period. Middle Egyptian texts
are extremely varied and comprise stories, historical narratives, letters, scientific treatises, and a large
number of religious sources. The first volume is a systematic description of the language, illustrated
by a great number of quotations from original texts, and provided with word lists and other indexes.
The second volume leads the reader in a gradual way in 33 lessons through the grammatical description provided in the first volume, and moreover contains an extensive list of hieroglyphic signs and
their values, exercises and, finally, original texts for reading.

Coptic in 20 Lessons is written by the author of the most authoritative reference grammar of the Coptic
language, and is based on decades of pedagogical experience. In easy steps and simple explanations, it
teaches the patterns and syntax of Sahidic Coptic, along with the most useful vocabulary. Drills,
compositions, and translation exercises enable the student to gain fluency. All words that occur more
than fifty times in the Sahidic New Testament are introduced lesson by lesson in vocabulary lists,
which are arranged by semantic field and accompanied by both Greek equivalents and English glosses.
The book concludes with three chapters of the Gospel of Mark, in which all new vocabulary is glossed
in footnotes. Coptic in 20 Lessons is the ideal resource for use in the classroom or for teaching oneself
Coptic.

Facility in reading an ancient language requires several competencies: control of the morphology, a
working vocabulary of common words and phrases, and a grasp of syntax. This pedagogical aide
addresses the first of these by collecting the basic forms and patterns of Sahidic Coptic and presenting
them in a convenient format. It is not a full grammar, but a supplement to a grammar. The work
provides beginning students with an overview of the morphology of Sahidic Coptic so that they can
see the whole of a part of speech or pattern as they learn discrete parts. It offers those who once
learned Coptic but have not been able to maintain it with a concise review. While the work is not
exhaustive, it is complete enough that it can serve as a useful reference for those who teach Coptic.
The work was developed for a course in Coptic at the University of Notre Dame. It is offered in this
venue with the hope that it will help students elsewhere.

Jean Yoyotte avait choisis.

This volume presents the papers given at an international conference on “Functional Aspects of
Egyptian Ceramics within their Archaeological Context”, which was held from 24th to 25th July,
2009 at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge, UK. The aim
of this conference was to discuss Egyptian pottery in different archaeological contexts and the employment of ceramics for understanding these deposits. At the same time some archaeological contexts
were utilised to gain insights into the function of pottery, in order to integrate both approaches. The
papers cover domestic, funerary, festival, and ritual contexts and the ceramic finds within them.
Additional topics are the widely neglected reuse of pottery and how ceramic material can be interpreted in its wider socio-economic context. The case studies discuss pottery derived from many sites
in Egypt from the Delta in the north to Elephantine in the south, and cover a chronological range
from the Old Kingdom to the Coptic period. This broad approach ensures that the focus was on the
role of Egyptian pottery within past societies as seen through various types of archaeological contexts.
This volume provides archaeological and ceramic insights that are significant beyond Ancient Egypt.

ACTS OF THE TENTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF
DEMOTIC STUDIES
Leuven, 26-30 August 2008
DEPAUW M., BROUX Y. (eds)
The Acts of the Tenth International Congress of Demotic Studies held in Leuven illustrate the disciplinary diversity of the field. Apart from new editions of documents (receipts, contracts, letters, oracle
questions,...) and presentations of new literary texts (including even those referring to raining frogs),
this volume also contains contributions such as a new proposal to standardize transliterations, a discussion of the classification of magical texts, or a survey of the history of Demotic in Leuven. The volume
will be of interest to egyptologists, papyrologists, and ancient historians.

While mankind’s fascination with the scripts of ancient Egypt has been a constant across the centuries,
their study as part of modern Egyptology is only as old as the decipherment of the hieroglyphs by
Champollion, now nearly two centuries ago. Although we feel confident that, at least in theory, we
thoroughly understand these scripts, practical difficulties in reading the cursive variants of hieratic and
demotic remain. These are often such that they constantly bring to mind the sometimes abstruse
associations by which the ancient scribes arrived at the various orthographies they invented for writing
the complex lingual structures. Demotic is a particularly interesting case in point, as it belongs to the
multi-layered textual world of the Graeco-Roman period, where hieroglyphs, hieratic and demotic are
usually found in complementary use, but also occasionally in competition with each other. In their
variety, the studies presented in these Acts bear witness to the rich texture of the script by investigating several parameters by which it may be measured, including the reading of individual signs and
grammatical categories such as verbal morphology. Indices of words and signs discussed, as well as a
full bibliography of studies in monographs and articles relating to the topic, complete the volume.
A BERICHTIGUNGSLISTE OF DEMOTIC DOCUMENTS
C. Indexes of New and Rejected Readings
HARTMANN I., VLEEMING S.P. (eds)
To complement the text-based organization of the emendations and corrections listed in the Demotic
Berichtigungsliste vols. A-B, this volume provides the Indexes of Rejected and Adopted Readings.
These enable the reader to search for individual lexemes, be they words, names of gods or private
persons, toponyms, titles, or numerals. In an additional Index all randomly published texts, i.e. texts
published in periodicals and volumes of miscellaneous studies (Festschriften, Proceedings of Congresses
and Colloquia, etc.), are listed under their inventory numbers in order to enable the reader to ascertain
the heading under which a given text can be found.

DOUBLE NAMES AND ELITE STRATEGY IN ROMAN

In this detailed study of double names in Egypt, Yanne Broux explores how the age-old tradition of
polyonymy flourished under Roman rule. While in the Ptolemaic period double names were mainly
bilingual and were thus connected to the concept of ethnicity, they underwent a significant change
starting around the middle of the first century AD and culminating in the third. Broux argues that
this shift from Ptolemaic Greek-Egyptian to Roman Greek-Greek double names was the outcome of
two structures introduced by the Romans: the strict social hierarchy on the one hand, and the municipalization of the metropoleis, which led to the rise of the local elite, on the other. This resulted in a
strong emphasis on Greek identity and descent, and double names lent themselves exceptionally well
for this purpose. They bring to the fore the importance that the local elite attached to Greek identity
and descent, and, perhaps, as a wink to the (forbidden?) tria nomina, provided a means to distinguish
their prominent bearers from the rest of the Egyptian population.

The natural citadel of Qasr Ibrim in Northern Nubia occupied for thousands of years a strategic position between Egypt and the Middle Nile region, the present-day Sudan. This volume contains thirteen
papers that focus on Qasr Ibrim as a key witness to cultural interaction between Egypt and the world
of the Mediterranean on the one hand, and Africa, the Sudan and beyond on the other. Drawing their
inspiration from the rich material found on site, these papers combine text-based and archaeological
approaches. Particular attention is paid, for instance, to pottery and textile finds, while texts written
in Demotic, Meroitic, Greek, Coptic, Old Nubian and Arabic are presented and discussed. Beyond
the mere presentation of material, the volume addresses more general questions concerning cultural
liminality, the role of indigenous versus foreign models and centre-periphery relations. Above all,
however, it chronicles a fascinating chapter in the history of North-South contacts.

In recent years, exciting new discoveries of inscriptions and archaeological remains on the Arabian
Peninsula have led to a re-evaluation of the peoples on the Arabian frontier, which through their
extensive contacts with Rome and Persia are now seen as dynamic participants in the Late Antique
world. The present volume contributes to this recent trend by focusing on the contrast between the
‘outside’ sources on the peoples of the frontier – the Roman view – and the ‘inside’ sources, that is,
the precious material produced by the Arabs themselves, and by approaching these sources within an
anthropological framework of how peripheral peoples face larger powers. For the first time, the
situation on the Arabian frontier is also compared with that on the southern Egyptian frontier, where
similar sources have been found of peoples such as the Blemmyes and Noubades. Thus, the volume
offers a richly-documented examination of the frontier interactions in these two vibrant and criticallyimportant areas of the Late Antique East.
The book is of interest to anthropologists, archaeologists, historians, Egyptologists, Arabists, epigraphists and papyrologists and, in general, to all scholars working in the period of Late Antiquity.

Grundgedanken in besonders charakteristischer Weise hervor.

d’or qui anime dieux et génies. L’espace de quelques heures, il n’est plus l’astre de la vie terrestre;

This volume presents the proceedings of the 10th international meeting of the working group
“Archaeozoology of South-Western Asia and Adjacent Areas” (ASWA X). The meeting took place at
the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Brussels, Belgium) from June 28 to June 30, 2011.
The 20 contributions presented here deal with a wide range of topics related to the human-animal
interactions and gather the results of research that has been conducted in Anatolia and the Levant,
more eastern regions (Armenia and Azerbaijan), northern Africa (Egypt and Sudan) and Oman.
Research questions include issues such as the exploitation of animal resources, changing animal use,
herding practices, social differences and/or identities, trade, animal burials and sacrifices, and cover
periods ranging from the PPNB up to the Early Islamic period.

The arid areas of the Negev and Edom played a prominent role in the socio-economic and cultural
development of the Iron Age civilizations of the southern Levant and northwestern Arabia, being at
the interface of key trade routes, providing essential resources and developing cultic practices that
spread to neighbouring regions. This volume comprises the papers presented at the symposium
“Unearthing the Wilderness: Workshop on the History and Archaeology of the Negev and Edom
in the Iron Age”, held at the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research, Jerusalem, on
12 December 2010, and supplemented with studies from other leading scholars. Research questions
include the socio-economic and political fluctuations in the arid margins of the southern Levant,
southern Judah, and the northern Hejaz in the Iron Age, the exploitation of the copper mines of
Timna under New Kingdom Egyptian and local control, the relationships between the southern
Levant and the Arabian world as seen from the archaeological and epigraphic record, and the question
of the “Edomite” pottery assemblage in late Iron Age Judah.

This volume examines the florescene of urban society during the mid to late Third Millennium BCE
in the northern Levant, focusing on the largely unexplored region of the central Orontes Valley,
specifically the site of Tell Nebi Mend, ancient Qadesh (on the Orontes). This work seeks to explore
the role and significance of ‘small’ regional sites during the Early Bronze Age IV, by presenting
a detailed stratigraphic and ceramic analysis of the Tell Nebi Mend sequence from the mid
Third Millennium (Early Bronze Age III) through the early Second Millennium BCE (Middle Bronze
Age I). One of the principal aims is to construct a detailed ceramic typology for Tell Nebi Mend
and the central Orontes during the late Third Millennium BCE. This stratigraphically anchored
assemblage was designed as a foil for the more intensively investigated ‘mega-site’ sequences of the
region, such as Ebla and Hama. It was also designed to explore and examine the development and
evolution of regional ceramic horizons and the growth of inter-site interaction that occurred during
the later Early Bronze Age. The ceramic and stratigraphic information presented sheds new and
important light on many of the key research issues that surround the Early Bronze Age IV, such as
the nature of the Early Bronze Age III-IV transition and the regional response to the ‘collapse’ of the
Early Bronze Age urban system ca. 2000 BCE.

One of the most intriguing issues facing archaeologists working in the second millennium BC is the
collapse of Late Bronze Age palace economies and the rise of smaller principalities called the Iron Age
kingdoms. Some of these kingdoms retain vestiges of the previous Hittite Empire while others represent an ethnic diversity of newly emerging centers of power. The decentralized kingdoms stretch from
Cilicia to the Tigris River and are situated on both sides of the modern border of Syria and Turkey.
Theories about this political transition have varied from environmental causes, internal dynastic
squabbles in Hattusha, to marauding bands of mythical “Sea Peoples”. Modern political realities
across the border between Turkey and Syria have often minimized the flow of scholarly information
about this important collapse. This book compares archaeological data from new as well as established
excavations dating to the Late Bronze and Iron Ages. Special attention is given to significant new
understandings of chronology that will contextualize the structural collapses at the end of the Late
Bronze Age and will illuminate the rise of new Iron Age kingdoms and their imperial ambitions.

The present work is conceived as a companion volume to the author’s Semitic Languages. Outline of
a Comparative Grammar. Its purpose is to show the birth and development of Semitic linguistics in
broad lines, but also to pay a closer attention to languages which have played a minor role in the
Comparative Grammar, while they are actively studied at present, viz. Middle Aramaic, Mandaic,
Neo-Aramaic. Suggestions are also made for a renewed research on some conjugation forms in
Old Aramaic, Classical Hebrew, Ugaritic, Epigraphic Southern Arabian, also Beja, whose links with
Semitic are stronger than often assumed. Attention is paid to the existence of a “continued” aspect
beside the “performed” one and the “not (yet) performed”, also to the relations between Old Egyptian
and Semitic, especially in the question of the correspondence of the consonants in earlier periods.
Finally, the traces of an ergative grammatical system are underscored, not only in Semitic, but even
more in Libyco-Berber, the Afro-Asiatic phylum which is nearest to Semitic, and closer attention is
paid to research in the field of Proto-Semitic roots, apparently monosyllabic.

Marduk-remanni was a Babylonian man who lived in the provincial town of Sippar during the first
decades of Persian rule in Mesopotamia (second half of the sixth century BC). His archive of c. 187
cuneiform texts was found in 1881 during excavations carried out on behalf of the British Museum,
but since then it has received little attention. On first sight, the historical relevance of Mardukremanni’s records seems minimal. They relate to his private assets, business enterprises, and legal
concerns – matters that barely seem to transcend the personal and local spheres. But upon closer
scrutiny, it becomes clear that Marduk-remanni was at the centre of a far-flung personal network and
that his life, despite his having lived far from the political centre, reflects many of the developments
and changes taking place at the highest imperial level. He was a child when Cyrus the Great of Persia
conquered Babylonia, and although this regime change caused little upheaval outside the political
arena at first, by the time of Marduk-remanni’s death several decades later, the world of his childhood
had changed. His life had taken a completely different course than that of his father and grandfather.
He had traveled near and far, visiting the Persian court at Susa on several occasions. No longer were
the horizons of his world confined to the Babylonian heartland, as they had been for his father and
grandfather. Marduk-remanni was born in provincial Babylonia, but he died as a citizen of a world
empire. This book traces the social, economic and political dynamics that transformed his life.

The so-called Phoenician ‘expansion’ in the western Mediterranean is treated here from the point of
view of the social and economic factors that led to the phenomenon and the way it evolved over a
period of approximately 300 years. To this end, the book gathers, collates and analyses the disparate
evidence for networks of interaction in the western Mediterranean and Atlantic regions of Europe and
north Africa in the period from the 9th to the 7th century BC. The focus form the less well-known
areas of the expansion, the Iberian Peninsula and north-west Africa, which are studied within the
broader context of Mediterranean interactions in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age periods from
the Near East to the Atlantic. The discussion is detailed and takes into account some of the latest
archaeological discoveries, along with previously unpublished material. Detailed descriptions of
selected sites are provided in an appendix.

Tas-Silġ, on the south-east coast of the island of Malta, is a major multi-period site, with archaeological remains spanning four thousand years. A megalithic temple complex built in the early third
millennium BC gave way to a Phoenician and Punic sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Astarte. The
sacred place underwent major transformations in Roman times, becoming an international religious
complex dedicated to the goddess Juno. Located on the maritime routes plied by mariners and traders,
its fame did not escape the attention of the first-century BC orator Cicero. Excavated as part of a
major archaeological project in the 1960s, the site of Tas-Silġ lay abandoned for several decades. In
1996, the University of Malta renewed excavations at the site for ten seasons, uncovering Neolithic
and Late Bronze Age occupation levels, and substantial deposits associated with ritual offerings of
Punic date. This volume is the first monograph of the final publication of the excavations. It provides
an account of those excavations and of the studies which accompanied them, including the lithic
assemblages, the figurative representations, scarabs and amulets, the worked stone, the coins, and
environmental analyses. It forms a companion volume to the second monograph, which reports on
the pottery and the inscribed pottery.

In 1963 excavations at Tepe Guran in Luristan revealed a series of occupations, representing a small
Neolithic village with an economy based on dry-farming, herding, and hunting, and strongly dependant on the nearby rivers and hills. A unique sequence of a-ceramic and early ceramic levels covering
a period of more than a thousand years (c. 6700-5500 BC) were uncovered. Peder Mortensen’s book
is the final report on the excavations, supplemented by sections on the prehistoric environment and
on hunting and early animal domestication at Tepe Guran by Kent V. Flannery and Pernille
Bangsgaard. The results are presented within a framework of reflections relating to the author’s and
to other scholars’ recent research on the development of Neolithic settlement and subsistence patterns
in the Central Zagros region.

Excavations at Yanik Tepe were conducted by Charles A. Burney over three seasons from 1960 to
1962. The site is located to the northeast of Lake Urmia, some 20 km from Tabriz. This volume
comprises the final report on the long sequences of stratigraphy and architecture belonging to
the Early Trans-Caucasian (ETC) period which lasted from about 3000 BCE into the early second
millennium. It is argued that the ETC people who founded the village came from a long tradition
of settled farming. While the first phase, ETC I, is characterised by round houses and the second,
ETC II, by agglutinative rectilinear building there is strong continuity in the use of space and,
particularly, of built-in kitchen ranges. The descriptive text is enhanced by numerous photographs
and line drawings. A concluding chapter makes pertinent comment on chronology and the place
of Yanik Tepe within a wider setting. A foreword by Charles Burney provides colourful background
to his pioneering excavations.

CITIES AND CITADELS IN TURKEY
From the Iron Age to the Seljuks
REDFORD S., ERGIN N. (eds)
For millennia, walled citadels have served both as residences for rulers and military forces and as sacred
centers embodying the power of the elite. The outcome of a symposium organized by Koç University’s
Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations, the essays in this volume are by leading scholars on the
area that is now Turkey, from the first millennium BC through the fourteenth century AD. They
examine the phenomenon of citadels in a comparative perspective in Anatolia and neighboring
regions. Archaeology, art history, and history are brought to bear on the phenomenon of the citadel
in its urban context.

This lexicon complements the critical edition (OLA 141) and translation (OLA 166) of Yūsuf
al-Shirbīnī’s celebrated portrait of Egyptian rural society in the seventeenth century, Hazz al-Quḥūf
bi-Sharḥ Qaṣīd Abī Shādūf (Brains Confounded by the Ode of Abu Shādūf Expounded), a work that, with
some six thousand words of contextualized colloquial Egyptian Arabic, also constitutes a unique prenineteenth-century source for the study of that dialect. The almost 400 headwords are absent from
existing dictionaries or broaden our understanding of their meaning and usage. Most occurences are
cited, with reference to OLA 141 and OLA 166, and many are quoted in context. Further examples
from sources within two hundred years of the base text help to establish definitions and illustrate
usage. The work is intended both as an aid to the reading of the text in question and as a contribution
to the development of an historical lexicography of Arabic.

Istanbul stands at a unique conjunction of an inland sea with a long maritime inlet, and a winding,
turbulent maritime strait that links two seas and separates two continents. These topographical features
have greatly facilitated maritime trade, for which the city has had an enormous harbor capacity. Istanbul’s
relationship with fresh water is also idiosyncratic: its dearth meant that fresh water for consumption had
to be channeled, stored, and distributed with the help of long-distance aqueducts, open-air reservoirs and
cisterns. The natural environment combined with the norms of local societies created a culture of water
that has constituted an important part of Istanbul’s identity. Various aspects of it are explored in this
volume, the outcome of a symposium organized by Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian
Civilizations. The eleven essays by leading scholars present research findings from the archaeological
excavations at Yenikapi, examine the distribution and consumption of water in Byzantine times as well
as the social impact of water in the Ottoman era, and offer reflections on the aesthetics of water.

This volume collects papers from the 24th Congress of the Union Européenne des Arabisants et
Islamisants (UEAI) in 2008 at the University of Leipzig. Original research and new approaches illustrate its theme of Sources and Approaches across Disciplines in Near Eastern Studies. The studies span
Muslim culture, civilizations, and intellectual thought in the medieval and modern periods. The
contributions demonstrate the benefits of following methodological and interdisciplinary approaches
that draw upon literary criticism, sociology and anthropology in the field of Qur’anic studies, religion,
philosophy and mysticism; state and society; literature and rhetoric; philology and linguistics; mathematics and astronomy; art and epigraphy; and Islamic sciences and economic history. The volume
also highlights the commonalities and overlaps that exist between these different branches and fosters
cooperative study across a wide cultural, historical, and sociological milieu. Rather than following an
isolated approach to their areas of study, academics in different fields of Islamic and Middle Eastern
Studies benefited from one another’s methodologies, and collectively built a wide body of knowledge.

Prof. em. Emilio Platti o.p. Perspectives on Islamic Culture consists of three parts, reflecting the threefold academic interest of Emilio Platti, expressed both in his numerous lectures and publications. The
volume opens with a number of textcritical studies that offer a detailed analysis of primary Muslim
sources, ranging from the Quran itself to a late nineteenth-century collection of majalis (mourning
gatherings). A second part of this volume discusses, from different perspectives, the historical and
contemporary relations and dialogue between Islam and Christianity. A third and final part is devoted
to a series of studies on the emerging European Islam and the challenges it faces.

varianti linguistiche attestate negli altri testimoni.

The text in this volume (with its translation) is from the writings of Emperor Zär’a Ya‛ǝqob, the
prolific scholar who reformed the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in the fifteenth century. In this homily, which is part of his previously published MäÒÌafä Bǝrhan “Book of Light”, he addresses in detail
the ritual of Christian baptism and the requirement of religious instruction for the baptized faithful
as well as the would-be baptized catechumens. The ritual for adults is discussed and defined with
thoroughness and clarity not found in any other source. Significantly, the text suggests that there was
at that time a large number of non-Christians who converted to Orthodox Christianity, either of their
own free will or due to pressure from Christian rulers, including the Emperor. As always, Zär’a
Ya‛ǝqob uses his authority to enforce religious instruction as he details it. He prescribes harsh corporal punishment, usually flogging, to individuals who do not attend school without acceptable
excuses—which are illness and going on military expeditions—as well as to clergy who neglect their
duty to teach and to district rulers who do not force people to come to school.

This volume contains the papers of the second meeting of the international scholarly network “The

Drawing on Gérard Genette’s theory of the five different types of “transtextuality” (Palimpsestes, Paris

prophetic extracts, hypotheses, homilies, integumenta and involucra, Keys to Dreams, translations, and

strategies of metatextuality in Greek and Jewish culture as well as its various manifestations in the
Septuagint and other Jewish texts, in the literature of the Ancient Near East and Egypt, in the GrecoRoman world, and in the late antique and medieval literature.

St. John Chrysostom was one of the most popular and influential Greek Fathers in Syrian churches.
His works began to be translated into Syriac in the fifth century, after which they significantly
impacted the shape of Syriac exegetical, homiletical, dogmatic, and spiritual writing. These volumes
make available for the first time an edition of the Syriac text and English translation of St. John
Chrysostom’s Exegetical Homilies on the Gospel of John, typically known in Syriac as Chrysostom’s
Commentary on John, Homilies (Mêmrê) 1-43. The text is edited on the basis of the extant main
manuscripts, from the 6th-8th centuries, in addition to excerpts preserved in various collections.
Introductions to the two volumes explore the Syriac manuscript tradition, the origin and technique
of the translation, its value as a witness to the Greek text, the nature of its many biblical citations, and
the impact of the version on the Syriac tradition. The volumes include an orthographical index and
an index of biblical citations.

Deir al-Surian has long been known for its unique collection of Syriac, Coptic, Arabic, and Ethiopian
manuscripts. This catalogue provides detailed descriptions of the 48 Syriac manuscripts (many of them
composite) and the more than 180 fragments that are preserved in the Monastery today. Ranging in
date from the 5th to the 18th century and with a majority of them being earlier than the 10th century,
the manuscripts present us with major authors and works of the Syriac literary tradition. They include
biblical texts (among them the earliest dated Gospel manuscript in any language), original Syriac compositions, and translations from Greek and (occasionally) Coptic. Several works were previously unattested. Connections with manuscripts from Deir al-Surian that are preserved in European collections
(primarily the British Library) are indicated wherever relevant. Colophons and various kinds of notes
by scribes, readers, owners, and occasional visitors also receive attention, thus allowing interesting
glimpses into the history not only of individual manuscripts, but also of the Monastery and its library.
Accompanying the catalogue is an album containing more than 300 pages of images.

The Sixth North American Syriac Symposium brought together scholars from across North America,
Europe, the Middle East, and India. Syriac Encounters offers twenty-five papers that were originally
delivered at the Symposium, and represents a cross-section of both the Symposium and the current
state of Syriac studies more broadly. Although most of the papers in the volume focus on the late
antique heyday of Syriac Christianity, several papers contribute to the study of other, related fields,
including Islamic studies and Middle Eastern anthropology. The blossoming of Syriac studies beyond
church historians and Semitic philologists can be attributed to a wider recognition of Syriac as a
bridge language and culture linking (and fostering encounters between) Rome and Persia, Byzantium
and Baghdad, and Christianity and Islam.

This collection of essays deals with the phenomenon of allography, taken in the sense of the practice
of writing a language in the script of another language. Although by no means all texts highlighted in
the essays are of a religious character, they are written in the scripts that are connected with the three
monotheistic traditions stemming from the Eastern Mediterranean: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The time span covered ranges from Late Antiquity to (early) modern times.
The volume contains studies on such cases as Aljamiado (Romance languages of Spain written in
Arabic or Hebrew script but also Bosnian in Arabic script), Judaeo-Arabic, karshuni (Arabic but occasionally also other languages written in Syriac script), and various combinations of languages written
in the Greek, Syriac, Armenian and Georgian scripts. In each case, the approach is both philological,
concentrating on the various systems of adaptation of the scripts to the phonetics of the languages in
question, and historical, with a focus on aspects of intercultural contact and exchange, as well as on
the emergence and development of the various allographic traditions over time. Particularly important
questions are whether specific communities used scripts of a language other than their own for practical or rather for ideological, identity-related considerations, and how these writing practices relate to
the sociocultural contexts in which they functioned and developed.

This is a catalogue of church, chapel and monastery mosaic pavements discovered within the borders
of Israel and the Palestinian Territories (Roman Palestine). Chronologically, it spans the early 4th to
8th centuries, the latter period seemingly designating the cessation of mosaic manufacture in early
Christian edifices in Palestine based on current archaeological findings. Sites are arranged alphabetically and according to the four Roman provinces that encompassed the region, and to which it is
believed each originally belonged. The primary name chosen for each site (in most cases) correlates
with the site name used in the indispensable gazetteer Tabula Imperii Romani Iudaea Palaestina
(1994), allowing for relatively simple site identification and cross-referencing. In order to simplify the
mosaic design descriptions, the catalogue utilises a system of geometric pattern coding. For each site,
a map reference is given for the Israel Grid, followed by a brief outline of its excavation or survey,
a thorough description of the pavements including the coding system, inscriptions (if present), a commentary including proposed dates (if given) and bibliography. The indexes include a concise list
of occurrences for each pattern code, figural designs and iconoclastic damage; for inscriptions, ecclesiastical titles, named mosaicists and cited provincial dating eras.

This is the second volume on medieval Antioch which is meant to become a series of studies on less
well-known aspects of the city’s eventful history. Its multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-linguistic
character pose more than one problem which needs further investigation. Unknown material, new
interpretations of texts, translations of unknown or less accessible texts accompanied by commentaries,
are the main focus of this series of publications on Antioch. This volume reponds to this initiative.
Various contributions highlight unknown or understudied aspects of this history, and stimulate
further research and discussion on the various aspects of the history of this important and influential
city in the Eastern Mediterranean.

What is the relation between the Greek ecclesiastical chant traditions of today and Byzantine chant?
That question can only be answered through a meticulous study of the transmission and transformation of both the melodies, the genres, and the whole musical culture of Late Byzantium and the
subsequent centuries. This book presents a handful of studies focussing on both the development of
new musical styles, such as the ornamented Kalofonia (‘Beautiful sound’), and on the education of the
cantors, the psaltai. The role of the master cantors, the maïstores, their teachings, treatises, traditions,
innovations, compositions, and the various modes of interpretation (exegesis) are among the topics
covered by this collection of papers, written by specialist scholars of Byantine chant history.

In the Roman period, construction and maintenance of civic monuments and infrastructure were
regarded as the normal duty of well-off citizens. For the subsequent centuries, encompassing the
4th to the 7th century AD, changing social and political conditions within the Roman Empire assumingly resulted in a severe reduction of expenditure and concurrent loss of sentimental and aesthetic
attitudes towards public space. This book challenges this assumption. It reconstructs how cities of the
Eastern Mediterranean in late antique and Early Byzantine times represented themselves towards
outsiders by assessing the care given to urban fortifications, streets and squares, decorative and religious monuments and, finally, statuary. Thereafter, the architectural changes that distinguished these
centuries from previous times are discussed. The book then evaluates the identity and motives of the
diverse initiators of interventions, as well as the skills and work organisation of the actual constructors.
Finally, the priorities of the users of public space, as well as their responses to it, are explored.

Despite the large increase in material evidence datable to the Theodosian period (379-455 C.E.),
textual sources still dominate our view of the period. This has led to a pretty bleak picture made up
of foreign invasions, loss of territory, a weak ruler dynasty, a state-driven distribution system, and
declining cities. And yet, many regions of the Roman Empire seem to have been doing quite well. For
this reason, this volume aims at a re-evaluation of the prosperity of the Roman Empire under the
Theodosii. Archaeological, historical, epigraphic and numismatic research are combined to investigate
the vitality and socio-economic potential of distinct regions of the empire; to explore the relative
importance of cities, villages, fortresses and estates in patterns of purchase and consumption; to gain
insights into the mechanisms and forces underlying production, distribution and consumption of both
staple goods and luxury products; and, eventually, to offer explanations for the general condition and
functioning of the empire.

This volume continues the series of five previous Roman Family publications, and puts special focus
on social history and living conditions in the familial contexts. It concentrates on three interlinked
aspects of family life and interaction: liminal situations regarding demography and ecological factors
that lay down the framework for family life, liminal conditions on the edges of familial life regarding
child labour, child slaves and sexual attitudes towards children, and local traditions which confront us
with people and cultures at the borders of the Roman Empire.
By focusing on three recurring points of departure (Late Antiquity, children and childhood, and the
encounter between various cultures), and by presenting a wide variety of methodological approaches
(from rhetorical analysis of discourses to statistical analysis, and from experiential life stories to iconographic analysis), the present volume offers a view on the status quaestionis of Roman family studies,
and widens the thematic points of departure for the study of the Roman family, thus hopefully pointing to fruitful directions for further studies.

The emperor Julian pointed out that the duties of priesthood were better understood among ‘the
impious Galileans’ (i.e. Christians) than among his pagan contemporaries. Like the emperor, the
essays in this volume look in both directions. Its pages are populated by very diverse figures: Plutach,
Aelius Aristides, Alexander of Abonouteichos, Daniel the Stylite, Gregory of Nazianzus, Shenoute of
Atripe, Mani, Muhammad, and a host of anonymous Greek and Roman priests, prophets, and diviners. The priests of second temple Judaism are considered too. Both in the Greco-Roman and the early
Christian worlds the neat division between priests and prophets proves hard to sustain. But in terms
of fame and influence a strong contrast emerges between Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian prophets; this is why it is only among Jews and Christians that ‘false prophets’ are feared. Two recurrent
preoccupations are the relation of priests and prophets to secular power, and the priest/prophet not
as reality but as idea, an imagined figure. Leading scholars of the religions of antiquity come together
in this wide-ranging and innovative volume.

This collection of essays brings innovative perspectives to the study of ancient mythography, that is,
the writings of the Greeks and Romans about their own mythical traditions. It treats a range of
sources from the beginnings of myth criticism in the 5th century BCE to the end of antiquity in the
5th century CE, highlighting mythography’s centrality to ancient views of myth and moving beyond
seeing mythographic texts as valuable primarily for the preservation of details about traditional stories.
Important individual mythographers are treated (e.g., Ps.-Apollodorus and Hyginus), but throughout
there is an emphasis on the connections of mythography with more literary genres, such as epic, and
more prestigious prose genres, such as historiography and geography. This makes the volume of interest for those who work on myth in Greek and Roman society, but also for anyone working on ancient
intellectual history more broadly, including those who study rhetoric, education, literary composition,
art and ancient scholarly traditions.

their historical and geographical aspects. These problems are discussed here within a broad chronological scope: from the Mycenaean period, through the flourishing of geographical science in
Hellenistic times, to the Roman period, represented by the names of Strabo, Pomponius Mela, Pliny
and Ptolemy. The papers embrace all parts of the ancient oikoumene, from Africa in the south and
Ireland in the west, through northern and eastern Europe to Central Asia in the east. Several authors
have devoted their contributions to ancient mapmaking and how this reflects Greek and Roman
conceptions of the periphery of the ancient world.

conference was discussion of and responses to his paper ‘Rethinking Cultural Contacts’ (Ancient West
& East 8 [2009], 81-132 – reproduced as Appendix 1 in this volume). Ulf’s paper offered a model
outlining the various forms of cultural contact and sought to explain how and why foreign goods and
ideas were taken on and to what extent they were changed in shape and meaning. Just as it was no
longer tenable to think of cultural contacts without taking into account the whole chain of exchange
– producer, transmitter and recipient – then cultural exchange as a meaningful process of the exchange
of goods and ideas between all people involved required an approach, hitherto lacking, by which it
can be comprehensively analysed and explained. The contributors are ancient historians, classical
archaeologists, philologists and Near Eastern specialists, thus providing a variety of perspectives on
cultural exchange in the Mediterranean and the ancient Near East.

How we concieve of the movement of ancient phenomena through time and space has been undergoing reassessment over the last two decades, causing the grip to be loosened on the well-entrenched
interpretative models that had dominated research up to that point. The ‘Regionalism and Globalism
in Antiquity’ conference, aimed to take stock of this situation and in particular to investigate in fresh
ways how regional and global phenomena in the ancient Mediterranean, Near East and Eurasia shaped
local life. Still today two models tend to guide explanations of intercultural and interregional contact
and interaction: diffusionism from cores (or centres) to peripheries, involving ‘superior’ civilisations
influencing other ‘inferior’ ones, and Mediterraneanism, the set of distinctive environmental, cultural
and historical images that create a unified and unchanging view of the Mediterranean. These two
models have come under increasing scrunity since the 1980s, as we have been living in a world of
shifting perceptions of time and space and of greater interconnectedness that affects our everyday lives
in numerous ways. The source of these shifts has been credited to globalisation, and with it has also
come a greater historical appreciation of the phenomenon, including the recognition that the world
has witnessed periods of globalisation since the end of the Ice Age.

Linear B is the earliest form of writing used for Greek; it is a syllabic script which belongs to the
second half of the second millennium BC and precedes the earliest alphabetic texts by at least four
hundred years. The tablets written in this script offer crucial information about the economy, administration, religion, institutions, etc. of the Mycenaean period. But who wrote these texts? What types
of texts were they? How can we read them, understand them and interpret them? What do they teach
us about the history, economy, religion, society, geography, technology, and language of the
Mycenaean period? This Companion aims at answering these and other questions in a series of chapters written by internationally recognised specialists in the subject, who not only summarise the results
of current research but also try to explain the problems which arise from the study of the texts and
the methods which can be used to solve them. No Mycenologist can currently cover with authority
the complete field and the Companion is aimed both at the beginner who needs an introduction to
the whole area and to advanced scholars (archaeologists, historians, classicists) who require an up-todate account which can serve as a standard reference tool.
Reactions to the first volume:
“All Aegenists need to have this book.” (John G. Younger, American Journal of Archaeology)
“Un excellent instrument, à tous les niveaux.” (Francisco Aura Jorro, L’Antiquité Classique)
“We are awash with companions of varying composition and quality. Arguably, many are superfluous;
this one is not... The companion under review seeks to make Linear B more accessible to students and
interested scholars. It is far more complete, authoritative and up-to-date than any.” (Dimitri Nakassis,
The Classical Review)
“The best reference work for the content of the Linear B texts, their language, their value, and the
historical contexts that produced them; very useful for students.” (Angelos Chaniotis, Ancient Crete:
Oxford Bibliographies Online Research Guide)

Inscribed Minoan stone vessels are ritual gifts that index their dedicants’ intention that both their gift
and their name should survive permanently at the place of dedication. These vessels contained offerings, yet the vessels themselves were also offerings, serving as permanent records of a ritual act. These
rituals were most likely communal, incorporating group feasting and drinking. The seasonality of
these rituals suggests that they were focused on the cycle of life: fertility, birth, death and renewal.
Offerings left with the vessels suggest that these rituals also addressed other, more personal concerns.
As for Linear A itself: the language behind the script appears to contain a fairly standard phonemic
inventory, though there are hints of additional, more exotic phonemes. The morphology of the language appears to involve affixation, a typical mode of inflection in human languages. The presence of
significant prefixing tends to rule out PIE as a parent language, while the word-internal vowel alternations typical of Afroasiatic verbal inflection are nowhere to be found in this script. In the end,
Linear A appears most likely to represent a non-IE, non-Afroasiatic language, perhaps with agglutinative tendencies, and perhaps with VSO word order.

The Iconography of Aegean Seals is a detailed analysis of the iconography of the images on the Aegean
seals, signets and sealings, providing for the first time a comprehensive structured overview of these
images and a presentation of the artistic rules governing the composition of their designs. The Icon
Theory of Aegean glyptic art which encompasses all aspects of the complex iconography and the
IconAegean standard vocabulary which reflects the visual language of the seal designs together give the
reader a framework for discussion and study that has long been called for by researchers. In this book
the reader is taken deep into the seal designs and asked to ponder anew the images in these miniature
masterpieces that were of such importance to their Aegean owners. The exposition of the work of the
icon in creating memorable seal designs is cogently argued through seal examples. The presentation of
the terms of the standard vocabulary in an illustrated dictionary format makes the detail of the seal
designs accessible as never before. The copiously illustrated closing discussion on design revises some
of the old nomenclature, identifies new motifs and elucidates relationships between image groupings.
This book takes a fresh view of the glyptic material, one that may surprise, but one that certainly
provides new insights into the subtle, sophisticated and polyvalent iconography of the seal designs.

This volume is designed as a wide-ranging analysis of ceramic standardization and variation, and as a
contribution to pottery studies in the Mediterranean and beyond. It originates in a conference session
at the 16th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists. Some of the most enduring questions archaeologists raise are explicitly or implicitly formulated around the concepts of standardization and variation. Yet, the significance of these concepts has rarely been acknowledged in
archaeological literature and their full potential for the study of ancient culture remains underexplored. To demonstrate the significance of these concepts for the study of material culture, we adopt
here a cross-cultural and diachronic perspective. The range of approaches pursued is broad and
involves traditional stylistic analyses, applications of archaeological science, statistical methodologies,
and post-processual considerations. The result will hopefully stimulate pottery experts and specialists
in other categories of artifacts to revisit their material from different and fresh angles.

This volume is the outcome of the first conference to take place on the topic of Greek baths and
bathing culture, a central but hitherto neglected area in the field of ancient studies. Fifteen papers by
an international group of archaeologists, art historians and ancient historians discuss Greek bathing
culture from a socio-historical and cultural-anthropological perspective, resulting in a comprehensive
reassessment that elucidates the sophistication of both the architecture and the culture of bathing
throughout the Greek world. Individual papers examine bathing in the context of science, medicine
and the cultural discourses coded in images on vases, while the majority focus on the archaeological
evidence itself, as the crucial component in this reassessment that removes Greek baths from the
traditional category of ‘primitive predecessors’ to Roman baths. From Greece and Egypt in the east,
to Sicily, southern Italy and France in the west, new information from recent excavations is brought
to bear on a wide range of related issues, including urban contexts, regional variations in experimental
design and construction, innovations in technology, and the social meaning of the rise of bathing
culture in the Hellenistic period. This book also provides the first comprehensive catalog of all known
Greek public baths (balaneia), including descriptions, plans and bibliographies, as a major reference
tool for future comparative research on ancient bathing culture and beyond.

The last decades have witnessed the adoption and refinement of various scientific techniques that
allow us to reconstruct past diets, but also to understand the role of food in social interaction. These
are exciting developments, but the proliferation of analytical techniques may also lead to over-specialization and fragmentation of the field. The papers in this volume explore the relation between diet,
economy and society in the ancient Greek world by integrating different analytical techniques.
Examples include the analysis of plant and animal remains, the bioarchaeological study of human
remains, stable isotope and dental microwear analysis as well as the examination of organic residues.
However, the aim of this volume is not only to compare different methods of analysis, but also to
integrate method and theory and to reflect more widely on the integration of science and archaeology.
The volume concludes with the report of a Round Table discussion on the institutional framework
and the regulations surrounding the practice of archaeological science in Greece, as well as the ethical
obligations of the practitioners.

This research, a unique compilation of scattered material, focused on a reconstruction of the sources
of the European system of values embedded in the philosophy of Greco-Roman culture. The author
is convinced that the Aegean cultures of the Bronze and Iron Ages are to be seen as the dissociated
links in a long historical chain uniting an infant Europe with the maternal womb of Eurasia. He
carried out on the spiritual world of the Bronze Age man, his relation to nature, his notions of life
and death, space and time, his critical values and aesthetic tastes. A detailed description of Greek
society and its culture during the period of the so-called Dark Ages is given, and finally special attention has been paid to the critical 8th century BC, the century of Homer, which marks the actual
starting point of the history of Ancient Greece. The significance of this manuscript is that all evidence
that excavations have revealed, has been incorporated.

After conquering one of the biggest empires the world has ever seen, Alexander the Great died prematurely in 323 B.C., without leaving a suitable heir to the throne. During the next decades his
generals, thenceforth known as the Diadochoi or Successors, unremittingly fought over the king’s
inheritance. The balance of power which ultimately resulted from their struggle would determine the
course of events in the eastern Mediterranean for centuries to come. Despite its historical importance
many aspects of the age of the Successors remain underexplored. Written by leading international
specialists, the 24 contributions to this book help in remedying that situation by addressing new issues
or shedding fresh light on old questions. They not only explore the written and material evidence for
the epoch, the Successors’ armies and military campaigns, their political ambitions and relationships
with Greek cities, but they also address several social, economic, religious, numismatic, art-historical
and urbanistic issues. They will significantly enhance our knowledge of the creation of the Hellenistic
kingdoms as well as on the then prevailing dynastic ideas and practices. The book is of interest to
students of Hellenistic history and archaeology, and Greek historiography.

This volume investigates the complex and diverse developments in the religious cultures of Greek
cities after the classical age. An international team of scholars considers the continuities of traditional
Greek religious practices, and seeks to understand the impact of new influences on those practices,
notably the deeper engagement with Judaism and how the emergence of Christianity redefined polis
religion. The essays illustrate the inadequacy of ‘decline’ as a model for understanding Greek religion,
exploring how dynamic change in religious life corresponded to the transformations in the Greek city.
The volume explores how the citizens of the Greek city after the classical age used religion to construct
their cultural identities and political experiences and how many of the features of traditional polis
religion survived into and shaped the religious mentalities of the Christian era.

HELLENISTIC POETRY IN CONTEXT
HARDER M.A., REGTUIT R.F., WAKKER G.C. (eds)
This volume is devoted to Hellenistic poetry in the context of the contemporary world of third century Alexandria and beyond. This topic fits in with the increasing interest in the role of literature in
ancient society in recent research, which has already been applied successfully to various aspects of
Hellenistic poetry. The subject also has an added interest because for a long time there has been a
tendency to regard this kind of poetry as art for art’s sake, a kind of autonomous poetry and display
of virtuosity among scholar-poets, who indulged in being as sophisticated as possible without being
in touch with the real world. This view has been rightly challenged in recent years and the articles in
this volume reflect this new approach, as the authors investigate the ways in which Hellenistic poetry
played a part in its social and cultural context.

THE GREEK FIGURE POEMS

The earliest European specimens of visual poetry are found in the literature of the ancient Greeks:
these are six famous technopaegnia, which were composed between the end of the fourth century BC
and the first half of the second century AD by poets such as Simias of Rhodes, a scholar-poet and
precursor of Callimachus, or Iulius Vestinus, an important official at Hadrian’s court. The present
book provides an edition of the six Greek figure poems, which is accompanied by an extensive commentary and the introduction to various aspects of this mini-genre. This is the first such comprehensive treatment of the six technopaegnia in 125 years.

Despite the difficulties of reconstructing the grammar of a dead language, studying Ancient Greek
offers new insights for linguistic theory. The morphological complexity of the Greek verb with its
highly intricate inflectional system provides a valuable basis for an in-depth analysis of the mechanisms which regulate the functioning of a language. Studies on the Ancient Greek verb have also
contributed significantly to the reconstruction of the Indo-European language since the early history
of Linguistics in the nineteenth century. The conservative features preserved in the oldest stages
of Greek allow us to rely on a solid basis to which every linguist must refer in investigating a model
of the Proto-Indo-European verb. The present volume contains the papers presented at the
8th International Meeting on Greek Linguistics. The contributions of this book analyze phonological,
morphological, syntactic and semantic phenomena from various areas of grammar pertaining to the
verb, using a large corpus which ranges mostly from Homeric to Classical Greek. This volume provides a current overview of some work on Ancient Greek Linguistics, setting forth interesting topics
for further research and drawing more attention to the contribution which historical linguistics and
the study of dead languages can give to the improvement and growth of linguistic theories, toward a
deeper comprehension of the language system.

detailed descriptions and illustrations of the coin issues struck by the Greek cities situated on the
western, southern and eastern shores of the Black Sea up to Roman times, thereby completing the
publication of coin material from the circumpontic area stored in the Pushkin Museum. Despite the
relative small number of coins (fewer than 500 pieces) there are quite rare specimens among them
originating from important pre-revolutionary private collections such as those of Rozanov and
Bobrinskii. Most of the coins have never been published before and will be of special interest to
scholars.

Although there are specialist studies on the mobility of the inhabitants of the cities and regions of the
Black Sea, we lack a comprehensive prosopography of those of them active abroad. This work, containing 3358 entries, is a first attempt, casting light on the mobility of different social and professional
groups, not only mercenaries and merchants but also itinerant philosophers and artists. It demonstrates that the Black Sea was well integrated into the main circles of the Greek, Roman and Early
Byzantine world. Chronologically, the work starts with the earliest attestations and finishes with the
end of the 6th century AD. It includes not only people attested by external documents but also persons mentioned by internal inscriptions as having travelled or died outside their country. The area of
investigation covers the entire Black Sea coast. The Prosopographia Ptolemaica is used as a model. Each
entry follows a set form: name; family relationships (father/mother, son/daughter, brother/sister);
type of inscription or category of papyrus; profession or further data on the person’s activity; form of
the ethnic; dating; testimonies and bibliographical references. For each heading the geographical order
of attestations is that of the SEG. There are very detailed indexes (names, cases of double or multiple
citizenship, proxenies or other honours awarded abroad, professional categories, etc.).

This book brings together, for the first time, tombstones of the 6th-1st centuries BC from the necropoleis of the Greek colonies of the whole western Black Sea area (modern-day Bulgaria and Romania).
It studies monuments with relief decoration – 98 pieces (from Apollonia, Bizone, Callatis,
Dionysopolis, Histria, Mesambria, Naulochos, Odessos and Orgame) are examined and illustrated in
a geographically arranged catalogue, which is preceded by a full discussion of typologies, iconography,
chronology, compositional elements, material, workshops and production, etc. The book is not merely
a case study but also an examination of Greek funerary art in general, offering parallels from mainland
Greece, the Greek islands and Asia Minor, and noting general tendencies as well as local peculiarities
specific to the western Black Sea.

This monograph provides a brief introduction to the material history of Ostia, Rome’s harbour town
from ca 300 BC until ca AD 600, before centring on about one hundred Latin as well as some Greek
inscriptions, some of which are previously unpublished. It focuses on inscriptions which are still present in situ, in forty-two places. They range in date from ca 100 BC until ca AD 420. They belong
to and cast light upon buildings, monuments, urban spaces and tombs. Each inscription is presented
in full, supplemented by abbreviated names and words, translated into English, dated, and commented upon from a contextual point of view. Sometimes inscriptions that are not in situ, as well as
relevant ancient texts, are quoted and translated in order to sketch a broader picture. The comments
are based on a critical evaluation of the most recent archaeological, historical and epigraphic publications. Several new interpretations result from own research. The inscriptions cast light upon political,
socio-economic, religious (pagan and Christian), and funerary aspects of the multi-ethnic Ostian
society, its relation with Rome and the Mediterranean world. The publication is intended not only
for scholars, teachers and students, but also for historians, classicists, philologists, linguists, epigraphists, archaeologists and art historians. It may also prove a useful vademecum for those who intend

This book presents an in-depth architecture historical and archaeological analysis of the sanctuary site
at Pessinus. Dr Angelo Verlinde brings together and scrutinizes all the archaeological data that has
been excavated and registered in the period 1967-2008. The discussed topics span a vast period
(c. 400 BC - 1000 AD) ranging from the modest early Phrygian dwellings, over the Hellenistic ‘citadel’ and ‘gymnasium’, to the Augustan theatre-temple and its Byzantine afterlife. The emphasis lays
on Roman imperial architecture in Asia Minor, and especially on the mathematical and stylistic design
principles of temples and their Roman influences. The process of reconstruction is elaborated beyond
the traditional showcase-element towards the tentative elucidation of ancient design principles in light
of ‘Vitruvian normality’ and analogous architectural data. For this reason, the book includes a detailed
catalogue of the architectural elements.

Augustan Regio III alongside the southern slope of the Colle Oppio in the modern Parco delle Terme
di Traiano. This building was a large pavilion within Nero’s properties which extended over the
Oppius and Esquiline hills. It was built after the Great Fire of July AD 64, which devastated a large
part of the centre of Rome and gave the Emperor the occasion to fulfill a long-fostered wish, i.e. that
of connecting his properties (forming more or less a series of horti) with the official palace on the
Palatine. It has a depth of 55 to 60 metres and its actual length is around two hundred metres. Some
hundred and fifty rooms have been preserved. The height of the rooms varies between ten and eleven
metres.

This volume explores the impact of religious traditions on the physical and social organisation of cities
in the ancient world. The contributors draw on diverse theories, methods and evidence to identify the
existence of broad similarities and differences in the urban religious experience. Individual papers
range from the Roman Republican period to Late Antiquity, and encompass the city of Rome, Italy,
and both the eastern and western provinces. Specific themes include the relationship between liturgy
and temple architecture, the influence of religious traditions on civic spaces, and the impact of
Christianity on the pagan city. Together, these papers make the case for the centrality of ritual and
religion in the experience of the ancient city and throw light on current debates by providing historical examples of the varied ways in which communities accommodate changing religious practices
in the urban fabric.

Research into Pre-Roman Burial Grounds in Italy results from a specialist workshop held at the
University of Groningen in 2011 highlighting new results in the field of funerary archaeology.
It contains papers on funerary sites in Italy ranging from Verucchio in Emila Romagna to Francavilla
Marittima in Calabria between the 9th and 4th centuries BC. Four papers deal with the hundreds of
tombs excavated at Crustumerium (Rome). Other papers deal with the necropoleis of Francavilla
Marittima, Satricum, Verucchio, Vetulonia and Veii. The volume concludes with an article on the
excavation of 3700 medieval and later graves around St. Peter’s church in the centre of Berlin offering
an example of recent developments in recording and assessing large funerary datasets. Archaeologists
working on pre-Roman Italy are indeed frequently confronted with large burial grounds holding
hundreds to thousands of graves and having complex excavation and publication histories. These and
other challenges of funerary archaeology are conscientiously and creatively addressed by the authors
in this volume.

éditions imprimées (celle d’A.

The international conference, “Jewish Art in Context: The Role of Meaning of Artifacts and Visual
Images” was held on January 14-16, 2008, organized by the Goldstein-Goren Diaspora Research
Center at Tel Aviv University. This volume is a nutshell representation of some of the papers that
were held at the conference. The contributions offer a survey of the achievements of Jewish art history
as a new academic discipline in the last one hundred years, seek to define the academic goals in the
present and venture to envision the contribution of Jewish art and visual culture to the study of the
history of the Jews, in the future. Furthermore, it offers a historical and a futuristic glimpse into
concepts of Jewish museology, and sheds light on some new discoveries and case-studies of Jewish art
from various parts of the Jewish diaspora.

nouvel An.

Volume III of the Corpus Topographicum Indiae Antiquae deals with Indian toponyms in ancient
Greek and Latin texts. Anyone who is interested in ancient Greeks and Romans and their contacts
with India and Sri Lanka is faced with the inconvenience of the vague location of places as well as the
often arbitrary spelling of the names. The present monograph fills the gap. It consists of an alphabetical index and an atlas. The data of this volume is compiled from Diodorus, Strabo, Pomponius
Mela, Quintus Curtius, Plinius Maior, Periplus, Arrianus, Ptolemaios and Kosmas Indicopleustes.
Each entry is followed by a reference to the ancient work and to modern authors dealing with it. The
index contains the names with their synonyms, variant spelling and essential notes regarding their
identification and location. A system of cross-references interlinks synonymous toponyms. In order to
complete the link between the place-names and their exact location it proved useful to appendix a set
of gridded maps (33). Places are plotted on the maps. The index and atlas form an indispensable
research and work tool for all interested in ancient toponyms and in their identification and location.
