An Authentic Gift Fair In-House!
The Teen Room at the Georgia location was
converted into a real department store on
Saturday, May 3rd for our 1st Annual
Mother’s Day Gift Fair. It was a lovely
event!
There were good options for Mother’s Day:
jewelry, clothing, natural products, food
demonstrations, and handbags, in addition to
a popular ‘make-your-own jewelry’ workshop.
We want to thank our board member Lucero Ortiz (top far left), for her commitment to help us raise
funds. Thank you also to those who attended and supported the event!
As always, our Development team
did a great job with one of the most
‘fun’raisers of the year: Taste of
Adams Morgan on April 29th.
The food of the 15 participating
restaurants was absolutely delicious,
and we sold more than 500 tickets.
These 2 wonderful women have been the heart and
soul supporting our development folks in the
planning of Taste of Adams Morgan for the last 2
years. Thank YOU Sefika Kurt (left), owner of the
Little Shop of Flowers on 18th St., and Kristen
Barden, Executive Director, Adams Morgan
Partnership BID.

Our Health Promotion team has done a
tremendous job in recruiting people every
year to attend the Susan G. Komen Global
Race for the Cure.
This year (our 8th one), they recruited over
80 people (staff and participants), half of
which walked and the other half ran. They
all had a great time!
We’ve received several grants from the Susan G.
Komen Foundation throughout the years. Currently,
we were granted $200,000 for 2 years to continue
our work with breast health education, screenings,
and navigating women to appropriate care and
treatment if diagnosed or suspected with breast
cancer.

Great job Health Promotion and thank you to all who attended and
represented Mary’s Center!
DC has 50 new potential daycare owners thanks to our
wonderful Child Care Licensing Program, which
provides all the training and
technical assistance to achieve this
goal.
The graduation took place on April 25th. We had 20 graduates from
the English course (above), and 30 from the Spanish course (below).
Since 2001 when we started the
project, more than 100 daycare
centers have opened in the
District with our assistance, and
nearly 50 more are currently
waiting for their license to start
operating.
A special recognition to Gracia de
Paula, Program Manager, for her
love and dedication to the program
and the students, and to her team
Violeta Chirino, Cory Mengual, and Wendy Guardado, for
their valuable work!

Eliza Ruggiero, Volunteer Coordinator, also in charge
of all in-kind donations has been extremely busy with
our partnership with
which gives us to $0.10
cts. per donated pound.
Since the partnership started back in December we’ve
collected almost 22,000 pounds.
Thank you to those of you who’ve been cleaning your
closets and asking your friends and relatives to do the
same. Please, keep doing it. Good Job Eliza!!!
If you want to donate, you can either bring your items to the Ontario location where we
have bins, or call for a home pick-up at no cost at 1-855-250-3146.
Thanks to the help of St. Patrick’s School, Mrs. Carolyn Harris and her
daughter Callie, Mary’s Center supporters, and St Patrick’s Brownie Troop
Volunteers, we had a really successful Book Drive during the month of April.
In total, we collected more than 1,500 books, which are now in the waiting
rooms of all of our locations, and some additional areas.
Boxes were set up at St Patrick’s, Mary’s Center locations, and Washington Fin
Properties in Georgetown.
Thank you to those of you who contributed!
Seven fellows from the Rumsfeld Foundation
(former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s
foundation), visited Mary’s Center before they
went back to their countries on May 9th.
They enjoyed touring our Georgia location and
talking to Maria.
The fellows came for a 6-week fellowship program
from Armenia, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Georgia,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and
Uzbekistan. The Foundation’s executive director
and other staff members joined them during the
tour.
DID YOU KNOW that we’ve also received foreign visitors
interested in learning about Mary’s Center from Russia, Japan,
Burma, Korea, China, Belgium, Spain, Africa, Ecuador, El
Salvador, Colombia, Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, and Brazil?
