The WARM Way A Publication for the Families and Friends of The WARM Place I Meet the Martz Family a story of transformation after tragedy By Mary Kathryn Nader At The WARM Place, we have the privilege of helping over 250 families each year on their grief journeys. Often, we are able to witness a complete transformation of the family during this process. One of these families is the Martz family. Jorden (18), Callie (15), and Wesley (12) came to The WARM Place with their father, Walter, in July of 2013 after the unexpected death of their mother, Jennifer Martz. Jennifer died on February 28, 2013 from a pulmonary embolism following back surgery. The family was shaken. Jorden recalls feeling shock and disbelief. Callie said it felt as if her whole life had been turned upside down, while Wesley said he felt incredibly sad. After receiving referrals from their school counselor and church, the Martz family decided to come to The WARM Place. Walter stated “We received so many recommendations and referrals, it was difficult NOT to come here.” During the intake, the family took a tour of The WARM Place and watched a DVD about our group nights. The kids participated in a “practice circle” with one of our counselors. In the practice circle, they introduced themselves, stated who died, and talked about their mother’s death and funeral. Jorden shared her favorite memories with her mom were going on church mission trips and shopping together. Callie remembered going Where Grieving Children and their Families Find Hope I 2015 on “dates” to the theater, while Wesley’s favorite memory was visiting the zoo with his mom. All of them talked about how helpful she was, and how she often volunteered at church and school. When they first started attending The WARM Photos By Brooke Bailey Photography Place, the children were nervous. Wesley said he felt uncomfortable, Callie felt out of place, and Jorden felt awkward. All of them said they were reluctant to share at first in their groups. Walter said he felt intimidated by the other parents in the group. “The other parents seemed like they had already survived it, and I was just starting to figure out life as a single parent. I had to deal with my own grief and my children’s grief while starting a whole new routine.” After their first group meeting, Walter said the children begged to quit. “It was hard on them emotionally to face their loss and to talk about it,” he said. But, they continued coming. Their group meets every other week, and the Martz Family has now been attending The WARM Place for over a year and a half. “I didn’t want this loss to be an event that derailed my kids’ lives, and I knew attending The WARM Place would help us deal with this in a healthy way.” Walter Martz Over their time here, the kids have come to appreciate The WARM Place. Jorden said she now knows that she is not alone; other people her age are grieving a parent’s death as well. She looks forward to the art projects and potluck meals with other families. Jorden also says she has developed good friendships here. She says that life is still hard, but she finds it easier to manage now that she has a place of support where she can share her story. Callie enjoys doing family activities at The WARM Place and having a place to talk about her feelings. She has made good friends in her group and appreciates that she has a place to talk honestly about what she is experiencing. Wesley enjoys having the Comfort Dog visit his group. He looks forward to playing with the other kids and says The WARM Place has helped him express his emotions. Walter said the amount of support he has received from the Parent Group has been helpful in dealing with his own grief and his kids’ grief. He said, “Grieving is hard, and The WARM Place doesn’t magically make that go away, but, it helps the process.” 1 A note from Shirley... Our 25th anniversary celebration year was a busy one- building momentum and culminating with the big event in August, A Cool Night to find the kid in you, at River Crest Country Club. We kicked off the year with The Junior League of Fort Worth presenting us with their signature project grant to completely renovate our kitchen /dining room which is the heart of our home. The renovations are beginning this month, and we are so excited to be able to reveal the new kitchen/dining room to our families in the very near future. The WARM Place Founders Peggy Bohme John M. In January, we hosted our first ever Family Night with over 100 attendees. These families came to enjoy an evening at The WARM Place not focused on their grief, but rather to have fun and make new family memories after the loss of their loved one. We have three additional Family Nights planned in 2015, see page 7 for more information on them! Some of the things they worry about include: Who will die next? Who will take care of me? Who will get hurt next in my family? Older children and teens often worry about their surviving parent. They are often reluctant to share their pain or worries because they do not want to cause any more stress for that parent. Teens are also more likely to worry about their own deaths. With the death of a parent or close relative, their perception of the world as a safe, predictable place is often shattered. Teens also worry about family finances, especially if the parent who died was the primary breadwinner. In addition, they often become anxious about being “different” from their peers at school or labeled as “the kid whose Dad died.” Many grieving teens worry about their future. They may wonder if there will be enough money for them to attend college or pursue their dreams. Adults can help children and teens with their concerns and worries. One way is to simply bring up the topic and ask if the teen has anything on her mind. You can help the teen to see which concerns are unfounded. Adults can also encourage older children and teens to keep a journal of their thoughts and feelings. Of course, they will want to know that their journal is private unless they want to share it with a trusted adult. A simple activity that can be done at home to help encourage children to talk about their worries is making their very own worry box. s e x o B y r r o W Supplies: x or Old shoe bo purchase a at a special box craft store. However, we can assure them that we will take care of ourselves and have a plan in place so that the child knows that he or she will always be taken care of. 3 Volunteer Spotlight We asked a few of our current volunteers that came to The WARM Place as children to share their stories with us...we think it’s pretty amazing that they have come full circle and decided to give back to our families. In 2001 my life changed. In one moment I was living the typical storybook life; a 17 year old girl learning to be a woman and all the fun that comes along with it. The next moment I received a phone call and my world was changed forever. The security that I had taken for granted for years had been stolen as I learned of my father’s suicide. I began to act out and be disruptive to compensate, with my 13 year old brother following my lead. We needed help. When we first visited The WARM Place, I walked in alone. With every story shared it quickly became obvious that none of us were alone. We all had something in common. We all walked through that door and became a member of a family. We were all working together to complete this awful chapter that we were forced to write. My intention in joining The Warm Place later was to try and give back to help others that were in a similar situation. What I found was that even now, 13 years after the unthinkable happened, I’m still being helped. It helps me to know that while nothing in the world can take the pain away, sharing my story might comfort someone that has recently been thrown into the same position I was in. It helps me to have this family, and to be their family. - Lauren Tenery WARM Place Facilitator Volunteer Lauren has been volunteering for The WARM Place since 2013. She works for Hawks Creek Golf Club in Westworth Village as a Sales Associate and is a Junior at University of Texas at Arlington studying Kinesiology. After her bachelors degree she plans on attending Texas Women’s University to pursue a masters degree in Occupational Therapy. She is an avid reader and enjoys walking and hiking! 4 When my little brother Bobby died, I was 9 years old. Bobby was only an infant when he died in his sleep of SIDS. I was definitely sad, but at the age of 9, I was terribly confused. Now that Bobby was gone, was I to call myself an “only child?” When adults asked if I had any brothers or sisters, how was I to answer? The majority of my grief came not for my own sense of loss, but from seeing it in my parents for the first time. We had lost a couple of my great grandparents at this point, but it was clear to me that this sadness was different. Coming to The WARM Place helped me to feel like it was okay to ask questions about Bobby, about what had happened, and about what would come next. My sessions made me feel less alone in my confusion and my struggle to understand what was happening in my family. Years later, I set a goal for myself to give back to my community. I sat down to decide which organizations here in Fort Worth were important to me, ones that I believed were making a real difference in the lives of people. I remembered my experience at The WARM Place as a child and the rest is history. I am so happy to give of my resources to an organization that educates its clients and the general public on the importance of grief support. I love how The WARM Place helps struggling families to have a source of caring and strength in such difficult times. - Natalie Chapa WARM Place Houseparent Volunteer Natalie has been volunteering for The WARM Place since 2014. She is the Company Manager at Amphibian Stage Productions, a local professional non-profit theater company founded in 2000. This annual holiday tradition loved by many was generously hosted by Merrill Lynch on December 16 and 17, 2014. Over 700 children were called by Santa himself! We are proud to announce that we raised over $25,000 with this fundraiser. Many parents and guardians shared special stories, photos, and even videos of their Phone Call From Santa with us, showcasing just how magical this call can be. If you have a story, photo, or video you would like to share, please send it to shelley@thewarmplace.org and go ahead and mark your calendars because Santa will be calling on December 15th and 16th this year! After the wonderful response from the inaugural Walk 2 Remember Them in 2013, we knew we had a new tradition to look forward to, and the W2RT 2014 did not disappoint. Over 350 people attended the one-mile walk and finish line celebration at The WARM Place last October. WARM Place children and families wore special memory holders as they walked in memory of loved ones. Highlights of the day included face painting, picture frame making, and of course the photo booth. Families enjoyed a hot dog lunch and fun games, making many more memories together. We would like to thank Katherine and Pete Giuliani and Parks Blackwell for sponsoring the W2RT in memory of John M. Blackwell. We hope you will join us next year-please visit thewarmplace.org for more information. 6 2015 Family Nights The WARM Place is very excited to announce a new program for our families in 2015 called, Family Night!
