Far beyond jewels is her value. Her husband trusts her judgment; he does not lack income. She brings him profit, not loss, all the days of her life. She is clothed with strength and dignity, and laughs at the days to come.* She opens her mouth in wisdom; kindly instruc on is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband, too, praises her: “Many are the women of proven worth, but you have excelled them all.” Charm is decep ve and beauty flee ng; the woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Acclaim her for the work of her hands, and let her deeds praise her at the city gates. (Proverbs 31:10-12, 25-31) W hat does the Bible say about moms? In the Chris an church, a mother holds a special place in the hearts of all, for without her none of us could be here in physical form and as an expression of the will of God to have humans made in his own image. A mother is so important to us, in fact, that God Himself gives respect to her and her place in our world. (…) Mothers should be willing to put God first and seek to dedicate her child to the service of the Lord. The godly mother will not be so much concerned with how much money their children make when they become adults as how faithful they will be to the Lord and what service they will be to Him. Think about the gi of life that a mother gives to us, from God. Without her, we cannot become the expression of His image here on Earth. And she risks all to give us the opportunity, to breathe, and to live, as Eve herself did. As she is the mother of all life on Earth, so too is our own mother the origin of our individual life. In fact, we honor God Himself when we love and honor our own mothers. On this special day, may we thank God for the mothers who have molded our hearts. As we honor them, we fulfill the truth of, Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband, too, praises her (Proverbs 31:28) On this Mother’s Day we pray that the Blessed Virgin Mary will wrap her mantle around all mothers, and through her powerful intercession, strengthen them in their maternal role! HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!! www.lnger.wordpress.com Page Five Sixth Sunday of Easter MASS OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE GIFT OF PRIESTHOOD You are invited to Fr. Page Nine Sixth Sunday of Easter May 10, 2015 May 10, 2015 Sixth Sunday of Easter Page Ten „Jest na świecie piękna istota, u której jesteśmy wiecznymi dłużnikami – matka”. Ta szczególna data to Dzień Matki, w USA przypadający zawsze w drugą niedzielę maja. Tradycyjnie właśnie dzisiaj mamy zostaną obdarowane kwiatami, kartkami z życzeniami, czekoladkami… Polacy mieszkający w USA dwukrotnie obchodzą to święto. W Polsce bowiem Dzień Matki przypada zawsze 26 maja. Noc. Dopala się na a w lampce. Lamentuje nad uchem komar. Może to ty, matko, na niebie jesteś tymi gwiazdami kilkoma? Albo na jeziorze żaglem białym? Albo falą w brzegi pochyłe? Może twoje dłonie posypały Mój manuskrypt gwiaździstym pyłem? “Spotkanie z matką” (fragmenty), K.I. Gałczyński Wszystkim Mamom, tym młodym i tym starszym, życzymy, by miały w sobie dość siły i obfitość serca dla swych dzieci, by siłę tę czerpały z serca Bogurodzicy Maryi i do Niej się uciekały w trudnych chwilach. Z Bogiem, Jolanta Waśko, President of Lednica 2000 Associa on May 10, 2015 Sixth Sunday of Easter Page Thirteen ON THE DEATH OF FRANCIS GEORGE, AND MOTHER’S DAY Copyright 2015 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) We all lost a good man a few weeks ago as Cardinal Francis George accepted God’s invita on to come home. Perhaps some of you made it downtown for the visita on, or to the funeral, or saw the motorcade traveling from Holy Name Cathedral, past George’s own St. Pascal’s on the northwest side, and on to All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines. I did not. But I watched much of the coverage, and I read many of the ar cles wri en about the local boy who made us proud. I know from personal experience that he was a highly intellectual man and a strong leader. What I didn’t know un l the end is that he liked his mom’s pies, strawberry-rhubarb in parcular. Yeah. Per an online Chicago Sun-Times piece, when George had dinner with some local missionary nuns, he favored this dessert (“‘That was the pie his mother made,’ said Sr. Alicia Torres.”) As a guy who grew up on my own mom’s pies, I felt an increased in macy with George. And since Mom thought everything I wrote was Pulitzer-worthy, I relate more to George, too, a er reading on nbcchicago.com that St. Pascal parishioner John Gora, recalling playing cards with the cardinal’s mother, spoke of something Julia George said way back when: “One day my son's going to be Bishop, then Cardinal, then Pope!” Nine mes out of ten, our moms are our biggest fans. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, Cardinal George--in speaking to the congrega on this past November during his last public Mass as Chicago’s Archbishop--observed, “At some point, Christ will ques on me: What have you done with my people? Are they holier because of your ministry? Are they more generous, more loving towards others? In short, you are my legacy.” Poignant, certainly, but even more so when considered in the context of Rose Kennedy’s observa on: “Whenever I held a newborn baby in my arms, I used to think that what I said and did to him could have an influence not only on him but on all whom he met, not only for a day or a month or a year, but for all eternity…” Our mothers bring us into the world. Yes, fathers are cocreators in the grand miracle of life, but mothers do the heavy li ing, and ul mately, we are--each one of us--our individual mother’s legacy. To this end, it’s not lost on me that Cardinal George asked his family and friends to sing Salve Regina on the morning that he died. Nor is it lost on me that this tradi onal hymn to the Blessed Mother was the final song sung at the funeral Mass before Cardinal George’s casket was carried from Holy Name Cathedral for the ride to the cemetery. “Woman, behold your son,” Jesus said to Mary from the cross, then to the disciple he loved (and to all of us), “Behold you mother.” My earthly mother is long gone now, but I think of her o en. Today we celebrate her, and Mary, and all the good women who carried us, birthed us, formed us. Julia George didn’t get it exactly right about her son, but she was pre y close. “Triumph, all ye cherubim; Sing with us, ye seraphim; Heav’n and earth resound the hymn…” Sing it, angels. Sing it, all. Happy Mother’s Day.
